Destination? The Flying Fish, Cafe, Sushi Bar, The Village of Fenwick, Fenwick Island, Delaware, Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches

I have written before about this restaurant that is all the rave in Coastal Delaware.  It is located at The Village of Fenwick at 300 Coastal Highway, Unit #7.  Tel. 302-581-0217.  Website?  http://www.flyingfishfenwick.com.  It is open Wednesday through Sunday, at this time of the year, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. or so.  Reservations are accepted and carryout is available.  Check the website for more info. and details on their menu.

It was the perfect early evening to have something light to eat after the Thanksgiving dining etravaganza.  It really did feel so good.  Light, tasty, great atmosphere, fantastic service, small and intimate.

An order of sashimi black snapper.  The sauce was a ponzu sauce that was awesome and different!!  Craig, our server, suggested it and it really was that good.

An order of Avocado Roll, another order of The Bangkok Dangerous, which was flash fried tuna and salmon roll topped with a unique muddled pepper blend, lump crab, spicy mayo, and their sweet special and spicy Bangkok sauce, and an order of the Bermuda Roll…shrimp, toasted coconut, avocado, and pineapple roll with a miso drizzle.

My order consisted of the following:  The Citrus Salmon Roll had shrimp, avocado, yuzu mayo, and bits rolled and draped with seared salmon toro, shiso, and tobiko. The other roll was The Eel Deal; flash fried avocado and tamago roll topped with spicy mayo, tobiko, and crispy BBBQ eel.  Both delicious rolls and again, thanks to Craig for helping in the suggestions.  Please note that the word shiso, which I did not know what it was, means an herb also known as Japanese basil.  It has a mixture of flavors…hints of basil, mint and cumin.

Saketumi is around the corner from my house, practically so.  I love going there.  It is hassle free, plenty of parking, the food is soooo good.  When I go into the restaurant, Kim, the Manager is usually around.  He is the friendliest person.  I love to talk to him.  He has so much to say and he is so interesting.  The servers?  Just as friendly, and very knowledgeable.

I usually just sit at the bar.  Interacting with the chefs; checking out the dishes going out to the tables.

The other night I started looking at the different Sake that were available.  There are basically 5 types of Sake.  Each one requires different brewing methods.

Jumai-Shu is a pure rice wine; no distilled alcohol added.

Honjozo-Shu, at least 30% of rice is polished away; a small amount of distilled alcohol is added.

Ginjo-Shu, at least 40% of rice is polished away; with or without alcohol added.  If the bottle is labeled Ginjo, it means distilled alcohol was added; if labeled Junmai Ginjo it means no alcohol was added.

Daiginjo-Shu, at least 50% of rice is polished away.  Again, with or without added alcohol.  If the bottle is labeled Daiginjo, it means distilled alcohol was added.  If labeled Junmai Daiginjo, it means no alcohol was added.

Namazake is a special 5 designation for unpasteurized sake; incorporates all of the above mentioned.

Saketumi is located at 18814 Coastal Highway (Rt. 1), Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, 19971.  Tel. 302-645-2818.  You can find Saketumi on Facebook.  They open every day of the week for lunch, dinner and drinks.  If the weather is good, they might even have their rooftop available for drinks.  Bento Box specials on Wednesdays.

I go there so much with my husband that they don’t even ask us what we want to drink.  Gluten Free Soy Sauce?  Of course, I don’t even have to ask.

Tanaka San is the Sous Chef.  This man is an artist, carefully assembling each dish.  I sit near his station so that I can watch him.  He always gives us a complimentary treat to wet our appetites.

On Sunday, we stopped by to get a bite to eat.  Usually, I have sashimi.  Lately, I have been hooked on their lettuce wraps.  But, on this particular night, I decided to try 2 appetizers that I have never even seen there.

Edamame Ravioli – Ravioli stuffed with edamame puree in a shallot broth.  So light and so delicious.  Very well seasoned and I really enjoyed them.

Roti is an unleavened bread.  It is served in some of the Caribbean islands and in Indian cuisine.  The next dish was Scallion Roti which were crispy pancakes filled with scallions with a spicy peanut/curry dip on the side, with a slight kick, just enough to get those taste buds dancing.  Loved them, as well.

I had a garden salad…I don’t think you  need an explanation….ginger dressing, the best!!

A dish of sashimi was ordered.  Tanaka’s presentation was so elegant in its simplicity.  So beautiful!!  It tasted as good as it looked.

Eating…in Rehoboth Beach, Stingray, Sushi Bar & Asian Latino Grill, Delaware Beaches, Restaurant, Review

I thought nobody would be eating out the day after Valentine’s Day.  How mistaken I was, when my husband and I decided to go to Stingray, located at 59 Lake Ave.  Tel. 302-227-6476.  Website?  www.stingrayrestaurant.com.

It was crowded, lively and with plenty of young people.  This restaurant is a favorite of many.  It is trendy, hip and cool.

A full bar with plenty of seating; a lounge on one side of it offers comfortable sofas and lower tables for casual conversation and mingling.  Pictures?  Sorry, it was crowded and you have to give people their privacy.

Stingray does not close during the week.  It is open every single day.  Mondays through Fridays it opens from 4 p.m. until 1 a.m.  On Saturdays and Sundays it opens at Noon until 1 a.m. 

Check the website above mentioned.  You will be able to go through the menus.  Stingray offers catering and check for upcoming sushi cooking classes that are held at the restaurant.

Ever since I started my blog I have repeated many times that all my reviews and pictures of restaurants are my personal opinion.  I enjoy going out to dinner; could be a hot dog stand, a food truck, casual or fine dining.  At times, I like a a restaurant on a specific night; other times the same restaurant might leave me lukewarm.  With all that said, then, this is my review of my visit to Stingray on 2/15/12.

I liked the atmosphere and the music.  I felt I was eating at a lounge; lights dimmed just enough; fun and relaxing at the same time.

We ordered some edamame with a soy ginger dipping sauce, fresh lime and sea salt.  I love plain edamame; the dipping  sauce was excellent.

Towels to clean our hands had been brought to the table already.

My husband ordered sushi rolls. Unakyu which was a grilled fresh water eel and cucumbers, outside sesame seeds.

And, the Man Eater which was fried fresh salmon with jalapeno and spicy mayo; sprinkled with chopped fresh cilantro.

I noticed he was just looking at them and eating them really slow.  Not thrilled.  You know, you can tell when the person is hesitant.  I decided to try one of them.  The best way to describe it? Boring.  There were no games playing with your tastebuds.  He managed to eat most but left a few on his plate.

On the other hand, my Chilean Sea Bass, sambal chili glazed with a crunchy sticky rice cake and bamboo shoot salad was excellent.  The fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned.  A bite of the sea bass with the crunchy sticky rice was the best.  Talking about having a party with my tastebuds.

No dessert for us on that evening….will be back to study the sushi menu once again.

Note:  I asked for fresh wasabi; our server said they did not have any.  Hopefully, they will add it to their menu.  It does make such a difference.

Sushi Simon, Boyton Beach, Florida, Restaurant, Review, Palm Beach County

I don’t remember how many times I have visited this small and intimate Asian restaurant located in Boyton Beach, Florida.  Sushi Simon was recommended to us by someone that was at another dining table and heard us talking about sushi, a couple of years ago.

The address is 1614 South Federal Highway, Boyton Beach, FL 33435.  Tel. 561-731-1819.  It is in a shopping center on the corner of Woolbright and South Federal Highway.

Sushi Simon definitely has a following.  The restaurant can get crowded.  Back in December I went with my son and sat at the bar.  We had a great dinner.  We talked to Simon and he told us he had worked at Sushi Jo, also in Palm Beach County.  On Monday, Simon was at his usual spot, behind the bar fixing sushi and other delicacies.  His rolls contain plantains, strawberries, macademia nuts.  His Crazy Lucy soup is not just a Miso soup but the inclusion of different types of fish; another twist from the usual.

Just a few diners at that time of the evening.  I must admit that since my husband has to eat gluten free, at times is a little hard to find a gluten free interesting roll.  That was the case on Monday.  The rolls he wanted, he could not eat.  He finally settled on one and to tell you the truth I don’t even remember what it was.  He said it was good, but with not enough enthusiasm.

He also had 2 orders of Escolar, sashimi style.  Escolar is a snake mackerel and is found in deep tropical and temperate waters around the world. Some restaurants call it white tuna.

I, on the other hand, started with Conch, sashimi style.  We also ordered fresh wasabi.  It is so good and a big difference from the wasabi they usually serve you.  Conch is usually a little tough but I did not mind it.  I, actually, expected it.  It was a little boring so I probably would not order it again.

I wish I could remember the rolls I had.  They were so good.  Part of the evening’s special.  Usually I can write the description from the menu but only the names were written and I can’t even remember those.  They were funny names.

If you do not like sushi or sashimi and think you can get something else at Sushi Simon, then, think again because this restaurant does cater to sushi and sashimi aficionados.

If you have to eat gluten free then be flexible and bring your own gluten free soy sauce.

I almost forgot to tell you that the service has been constant; friendly and willing to help with the menu.

Sushi Simon has reviews that go from excellent, to terrible, rolls are too small, or best ever, and the usual too pricey.  It’s personal thing, so check it out and decide for yourselves.

Short and to the point.  Next time I will make sure I get those descriptions before I get too comfortable.

City Oyster & Sushi Bar, Delray Beach, Florida, Restaurant, Review, Oysters, South Florida, Palm Beach County

I came to Delray Beach about 7 years ago.  If I remember correctly the first restaurant I went to was City Oyster.  Sitting outside is one thing the restaurants in Delray offer, when possible.  Yes, dining al fresco, people watching, palm trees swaying and the train just passing by just make me enjoy my dinners even more.

I have not had dinner at City Oyster in some time; I did not have it the other day either.  I came for oysters very early in the evening; a few people at the bar nobody yet sitting outside.  Come to think of it, South Florida has been a bit chilly.  Also, it was because the oysters and drinks were on special if you sat at the bar.  Not for me, I will even pay more and sit outside.  Remember that I will be going back to Delaware and sitting outdoors is a treat, at the moment.

The service was great.  More so, because they let us sit down at a prime outdoor table and we were just going to have a couple of drinks and some oysters. 

City Oyster is located at 213 East Atlantic Avenue, right in the middle of this trendy Village by the Sea.  The tel. is 561-272-0220.  Website is www.cityoysterdelray.com.  City Oyster is not the only restaurant for the Big Time Restaurant Group.  They also have restaurants in West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and New York.

We ordered 2 kinds of oysters; they had a variety.  Ours were nice, cold and salty.

City Oyster is mainly a seafood restaurant but they also have salads, burgers, chicken, pork chops and steaks.  And, for the sushi aficionado they have a complete sushi menu; appetizers and rolls.

That was not our problem tonight.  Actually, that does not happen too often.  But, the subject of eating is always there.  I have mentioned before that I do like interesting food; not afraid to try many types of cuisines.

It has been pretty cold in South Florida.  Mentally, you are prepared for the sun, the swaying palm trees, the beach.  But sweaters?  I don’t think so.  Too early.

Atlantic Avenue, on this Village by the Sea was quiet tonight; the perfect night to visit Lemongrass.  This Asian Bistro is right in the heart of Delray Beach.  Only one couple was brave enough to dine “al fresco” tonight.  The rest of us, inside was our preference.  Before I forget Lemongrass is located at 420 E. Atlantic Ave.  Tel. 561-278-5050.  Website is www.lemongrassasianbistro.com.  Besides the location in Delray Beach, Lemongrass is also in Boca, Boyton Beach and Ft. Lauderdale. 

I have only been to the one here in Delray and I was so pleasantly surprised as I came in and saw the new dining section.  All remodeled, clean lines and a very comfortable bar for either eating or drinking.  It was definitely needed.

The sets of tables are arranged at closed proximity.  It does not bother me.  People usually check what is arriving at the table.  I do the same thing.

An appetizer of sashimi was ordered; but it came with a hot stone.  You were to sear the fish.  A hit with everyone passing by.  I don’t think people realize that this dish gets the table going and sets the mood for the evening.

We laughed and we joke in Spanish and English.  It was time to get down to the serious business of ordering entrees and the 3 of them were different, interesting and delicious.

I ordered the Holly Snapper.  I have ordered this dish more than a few times.  It is one of my favorites and tonight it was just as good.  This fish is whole, boneless and fried; topped with a garlic sweet chili sauce.

Another dish ordered, a most popular one, was the Lobster Monster Roll.  It had crispy lobster, cucumbers, scallions, asparagus, masago, spicy mayo and sesame seeds.  Amazing looking and tasting.

A new addition to the Lemongrass menu was Grilled Shrimp with a Red Curry served in a young coconut.  Great presentation because the coconut was filled with the red curry and the grilled shimp surrounded the coconut. It was served with a spoon, as well.  As you ate the broth and put the shrimp in it you could also scrape the side of the coconut and get the pulp, which, if you really like coconuts, I don’t have to tell you that the pulp of a young coconut or “tela” is the best part.

Of course, we wanted to find out how the coconut was prepared.  It looked perfectly peeled and smooth.  Well, they are bought that way and all that needs to be done is to cut the top and fill it with the food, in this case the Red Curry.

Even though we did not exchange names our neighbors on one side of the table were so friendly and gave us tips about the area.  They are locals.  The other young couple on the other side was so nice, as well.

I have mentioned before that part of what makes this Village by the Sea so unique and special is the people; and in this case a smiling face is half the meal.  

 

Note:  Lemongrass was very gracious to make us a special sauce since my husband has to eat gluten free, and the sauce that accompanied the appetizer had soy sauce, which has wheat.  Organic Tamari, gluten free soy sauce is readily available in many supermarkets and specialty foods shops.  It would be a great to have it available to their customers with gluten allergies.

Having lived at the Delaware Beaches for almost 30 years I have seen a lot of changes but the most have happened in the town of Bethany Beach.  It was definitely a seasonal town with summer starting on Memorial week-end and ending on Labor Day. 

I remember also when once my parents visited from Puerto Rico and we went to get something to eat at a small place and they wanted a beer and they were told that it was a “dry” town.  What?  My mother could not believe it.  Where have you moved to, she asked? 

But as they visited more often and as the town progressed, with more buildings and restaurants and amenities they could see that it was the perfect place to raise a family.  They, actually, loved coming to Bethany.

Bethany still surprises me every time that I visit.  During the summer it is packed.  Twice I could not find parking this past summer.  The beautification of the town is fantastic.  The additions of new restaurants offering fare for everyone’s taste let visitors and residents stay in town instead of driving up and down Ocean Highway (Rt. 1).

One of the newer additions to the town is Misaki, located at the York Beach Mall in South Bethany Beach.  Tel. 302-539-0500.  It offers Asian Cuisine, including sushi and sashimi.

The trend in sushi restaurants, some with very innovative cuisines, has sprung from coast to coast.

During past visits to California the sushi and sashimi have been presented in such a way that you cannot help but fall in love with it.

I love the traditional rolls even though I usually order sashimi.  I get excited when splashes of color are added to new dishes; mango and figs being examples of those.

I also remember the little sushi restaurant that started many years ago in Fenwick Island, Delaware, just south of Bethany Beach.  All of us, residents and locals fell in love with it.  From then on sushi restaurants in the Maryland and Delaware beaches have not looked back.

Last night is was raining and I decided that a trip to Misaki would be the thing to do, besides the fact that they had good specials.  I had not visited this restaurant because, here in Rehoboth Beach, we have 2 great restaurants offering Asian Cuisine; The Cultured Pearl and Saketumi.  I am partial to them; both different in a lot of ways and excellent.  I wanted to see how Misaki would measure to the restaurants in Rehoboth.

Passing through Bethany Beach and entering South Bethany, right at the last light, on the right hand side, is the York Beach Mall and Misaki is located on that strip mall.

It is a small restaurant but can accommodate enough people comfortably.  It had a good sushi bar, and usually that is where I would sit but since there were 3 of us, a booth was most appropriate for casual conversation.

The service was excellent, attentive and not intrusive.  He presented the specials and let us catch up and relax.

Shelley does not eat sushi so she decided on the chicken teriyaki, which she had tried before and really liked it.  She was not disappointed this time either.

I had the chef sashimi.  I also ordered, the aji mackerel which was suggested.  It is also called horse mackerel and the fish had both delicate and robust flavors.

I had the Miso soup which they make every day.  My favorite is the one at The Cultured Pearl.  I have tried it every where I go and that one is still the one.

I think Misaki can hold its own to the Rehoboth Beach restaurants.  It is great to be able to have so many choices.  People have received this restaurant with opened arms; it was packed last night.

Every week I say that I should not be eating this much raw fish; once again I had that craving for sashimi.

If you are a frequent visitor to the Delaware Beaches you know that we do have excellent restaurants in all the beaches.  So many choices and so lucky to be able to experience the best.

On Monday night my craving took me to the Cultured Pearl located at 301 Rehoboth Avenue right on downtown Rehoboth Beach.  The telephone is 302-227-8493.  Website www.culturedpearl.us.  Telephone for carry out is 302-227-4217.

I have been a customer of the Cultured Pearl for many years, going back to their old location on Wilmington Ave.  Rob and Susan are the owners of this very popular Asian restaurant.

It is decorated with an inspiration in traditional Japanese architecture; bamboo, flowing water, koi, and live birds.

During the summer months I usually try the downtown restaurants during the week because it is hard to find parking.  Actually, I have to be honest with you, it is a pain.  But, last night I figured that being that it was a Monday night, and the weather was not the greatest, well, it would be better.  And it was.

At first the restaurant did not seem that crowded, that changed later on.  On good weather, it is great to sit outdoors.  The roof top area has a lake effect; koi below and gazebos on top.

I usually sit at the sushi bar.  I go to this restaurant to strictly eat sushi and sashimi, but if you have not acquired a taste for it, don’t worry because the Cultured Pearl is restaurant that also offers American Cuisine.

Those 2 first seats at the sushi bar are the ones I go for.  Right in front of Master Sushi Chef, Yasuhiro Sano.  Last night he fixed us a little something to wet our appetite.  The Firecracker is a roll that is so delicious.  It has a kick to it because of the fresh jalapeno.  It has tuna, salmon, wrapped in Nori Hasomaki style, tempura battered, topped with spicy mayo, fresh jalapeno, crab meat, sriracha.  It is slightly warm and we always order it.

I have ordered Miso soup in every Japanese restaurant, but I must admit that the one at the Cultured Pearl is one of the best if not the best, in my opinion.

Last night I was looking at it wondering how this soup was made.  Miso soup consists of a stock called “dashi”, which is a simple broth made by boiling edible kelp and preserved, fermented tuna; then straining the liquid.  Hmmm…  Then softened miso paste is mixed into it.  Miso paste is a seasoning and it is produced by fermenting rice, barley and or soybeans, with salt and the fungus kojikin.  Hmmm…again.  Miso is high in protein and rich in vitamins and minerals.

I am not thinking again how this soup is made.  I love it, anyway.

Two entrees were ordered.  Well, look at my sashimi.  The live scallops are one of my favorites; eaten with the thinly sliced lime.  On the picture, they are on the right hand side.  Red snapper in the middle, salmon, tuna, eel, etc. etc.  A feast, no less.

By the time we were finished the restaurant was crowded; it was a rainy night in Rehoboth Beach, the people eating outdoors had to come in and I took off to meet Paula so that she could show me what else the beaches had to offer on a Monday night.
