Laid back coastal retreats, we have several at the Delaware Beaches!! If you are visiting Lewes check what’s going on Tuesday, 7/30 and 7/31. Even though Summer of 2013 is flying by….there is still plenty to do at the beaches.
Tuesday, 7/30 – University of Delaware Marine Tours – 10 a.m. through Noon. Intrigued by the ocean? Interested in a marine science career? How about just curious…plenty of research is being conducted at the University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean and Environment. Take a tour to find out. It is for visitors 10 years of age and older. Tours are offered year round and reservations should be made one week in advance. But, on Tuesdays and Fridays during the summer and in the mornings you can tour it. Please call 302-645-4346.
Tuesday, 7/30 – Hayrides at The Beach – Cape Henlopen State Park. 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The hayrides begin at the Campground Parking Lot. But, please get your tickets at the Nature Center starting at 9 a.m. today. Tickets are $5/person and it is for ages 5 years of age and up. First come, first serve!! More info? Tuesday, 7/30 – Evening Kayak Eco-Tour – 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Kayak Shack at the Fishing Pier. This is a 2 hour paddle, all equipment is provided. Just bring drinking water, secured footwear; no flip flops. Ages 8 and up with paying adult. Solo paddlers have to be at least 13 years of age. Tuesday, 7/30 – Summer Concert at Stango Park – 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. Bring your family and friends…and blankets, chairs, and bug spray. Beautiful Stango Park is located next to the Lewes Public Library on Kings Highway. Tonight is Zydeco A Go Go…the sounds of Cajun and Creole music!
Wednesday, 7/31 – Zumba with Kelly at Canalfront Park on Front Street, Lewes from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. This is a free Zumba class that takes place on Wednesdays and is totally free!!
Wednesday, 7/31 – Cinema by the Canal – Summer Series of Outdoor Film Screenings for all ages. “Here Comes The Boom” will be featured on Wednesday at Canalfront Park, located at 211 Front Street. The film will begin at dusk; around 8:15 or 8:30 p.m. Here Comes the Boom is a comedy, featuring Henry Winkler, Bas Rutten, and Salma Hayek. It is rated PG.

We are in the coast and a lot of the events and activities depend upon the weather. That’s why you come to the Delaware Beaches…to experience this casual lifestyle that by no means I take for granted. So, check the weather before you head out.
Tuesday, 6/11 – Summer Concert at Stango Park – Captain Blue’s Grass Band. The genre? Bluegrass. 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Take your blanket, chair, or both, friends and bug spray. Beautiful Stango Park in Lewes is next to the Lewes Public Library along King’s Highway.
Wednesday, 6/12 – Seining the Bay – Search the shallows with a seine net, catching fish, snails, shrimp, crabs, and other critters. Dress appropriately; you will get wet. No flip-flops. Ages 5 and up with a paying adult. No pre-registration is necessary. Tickets are available only on the day of the program. $5/person. Call 302-645-6852. Location? Until Thursday, 6/13 – Chautauqua – America Takes Flight – 15th Annual Chautauqua Tent Show. Step back in time with musical entertainment, first person theatrical performances, and numerous educational opportunities for the whole family. Free!

Thursday, 6/13 – Ghost Crab Walk. Meet at the Seaside Nature Center inside Cape Henlopen State Park, at 15099 Cape Henlopen Drive. The walk starts at 8:30 p.m until 9:30 p.m. Take a flashlight and search the bay for the elusive and fast ghost crab. Ages 7 and up with a paying adult. $5/person. Friday, 6/14 – Family Boat-Building Weekend on the Banks of the Canal – Lewes was a shipbuilding town, where hundreds of vessels were built. Rekindle this art in Lewes as part of their Family Boatbuilding Weekend over Father’s Day weekend. Support their participating groups and families as they build wooden boats called “Bevin Skiffs” June 14-16 in front of the Lewes Lifesaving Station to view more than 16 wooden boats made by wood boat enthusiasts. Launching of the new handmade Bevin Skiffs at Lewes Canalfront Park on Sunday around 1 p.m. will be the place to be. More info? Please call 302-645-7670.

Saturday, 6/15 – The 23rd Annual Lewes Garden Tour 2013 – Rain or Shine!! It is sponsored by The Lewes Chamber of Commerce, http://www.leweschamber.com. This is a self-guuided tour of 7 private gardens and one public garden in the Historic Seaport town of Lewes. Five of this year’s gardens are all located in or near the Historic Distric. Many of them are walking distance from the Zwaanendael Park where the Garden market and the Chamber’s Visitor Center are located. Two of the gardens are located on the Lewes Beach-side of the canal.
Lewes’ newest public garden will be on the tour. The Children’s Learning Garden, designed to teach children about all aspects of gardening, is a new initiative by Lewes in Bloom, the award-winning volunteer organization responsible for the beautification of Lewes.
It will be a fun day with more than 40 vendors specializing in garden related retail items and working artists will be in the tour gardens painting. Tour visitors can enjoy beverages and lunch in the Refreshment Tent provided by Cafe Amici in Zwaanendael Park with coffee service beginning at 8 a.m. During the hours of the tour, free shuttle service is available for ticket holders.

The Garden Tour will begin at 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. $20/person in advance and $25 the day of the Tour. Historic Lewes was founded in 1631. Charming streets, beautiful scenery, quaint, great shopping and diverse restaurants, are some of the attributes of Lewes. But, I have said it many times before; the residents really make the town. They are friendly and go out of their way to make you feel at home. You want to come back again and again. They are proud of their town.
If you are visiting Lewes this coming week, check out what’s going on. There is always something; a concert, a walk, music, a Farmers’ Market.
Sunday, 8/21 – 3rd Annual Greene Turtle Lewes 5K Run/Walk from 7:15 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Run or walk the pretty and flat course nestled in the residential communities at the Villages of Five Points and support the Cancer Support Community of Delaware. Monday, 8/22 – Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse Tour from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Take a short boat ride and walk in the steps of the lighthouse keeper. Included in the tour is a boat ride, a tour of the interior, and a climb to the lantern room. Also included is the sail-by of the Harbor of Refuge Light Station for close views and photography. These tours are open to adults and children from ages 6 and up (accompanied by an adult). Reservations are required.

Tuesday, 8/22 – Burger Special and Music in the Evening at On the Rocks located at the Cape May Lewes DE Ferry Terminal. Website? www.ontherocksde.com. Casual, great views, waterfront…and one very delicious burger.
Tuesday, 8/23 – It’s a Summer Concert with Rockafillys at 7 p.m. at Stango Park, which is located along King’s Highway, next to the Lewes Public Library. This is music under the stars, an outdoor event.
It is said that “They rock, they roll, they chase those blues with swing and soul!!” The Rockafillys are one of the Northeast’s premier dance bands. They play everything from 40s R&B and Boogie Woogie to Jumpin’ Blues and Western Swing.
Thursday, 8/25 – Lewes Steps Out for Fitness – This walking program takes place the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month. Sign up is at 5 p.m. in the parking lot at Beach 1, then, walk to the Canalfront Park for a full filled activity. All are welcomed.
Saturday, 8/27 – Lewes Historic Farmers’ Market – 8 a.m. until Noon. It is held at the Lewes Historical Society Complex at 2nd and Shipcarpenter streets. More info.? Please visit http://www.historiclewesfarmersmarket.org.
