Rehoboth Beach Eats! Casapulla’s Subs, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Steaks, Deli, Catering, NEW!! Online Ordering, Website, Facebook, App, Delaware Beaches, Eat In, Take Out, Southern Delaware

dscn0456

As I looked through the photos of a family busines, I cannot help to think what Luigi Casapullas, who opened Casapulla’s back in 1956, would be asking himself…..What’s Going On?  At the Beach?, Online Ordering?, Website?, Facebook?, An App?  What has this world come to?

dscn0455

After years of being in Rehoboth Beach, ordering from Casapulla’s Subs just got even easier.  You might be at the beach, shopping, strolling…order online and pick it up.  Three easy ways, besides just driving up to Casapulla’s at 19331 Lighthouse Plaza Blvd., Rehoboth Beach, and relax in their dining area.  Tel. 302-227-7827.

From their website, please visit http://www.casapullassubs.com.

From Facebook, please visit Casapulla’s Subs – www.facebook.com/casapullassubs.

Or, order through the APP Casapulla’s Subs.

Besides the ever popular subs, Casapulla’s also caters any events you might be thinking having this summer.  They also have homemade heat and serve trays for easy entertaining.  When you live at the beach…..summer guests are at times unexpected.  Add their deli salads and you can then relax and enjoy your guests.

Guess What?  They also deliver lunch to your office from Monday through Friday to Georgetown, Millsboro, Lewes, and Rehoboth.  If you are in Georgetown or Millsboro, please call them between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.  And, if you are in Lewes and Rehoboth, please call between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.  There is an applicable delivery charge.

My order…2 subs.  Depending how hungry you are, there are 3 sizes…by the size of mine, you guessed right…I was hungry!

I have had the Turkey Stuffer before and I still like it a lot.  It’s the combination of turkey, whole cranberry sauce and stuffing.  It is really good!!  Thanksgiving all year-long!!   Love the bread. Look how nice it looked.

My order of a Boar’s Head Chicken Breast Sub hit the spot, with everything on it.  Boar’s Head does not add additional salt to their lunchmeats.

Writing a blog is writing about your experiences.  Believe me, not all the time I write posts about what I am doing, or eating for that matter.  But, these subs were good…..I had to pass the word along.

TGIF….have a great week-end!!  It is Summer 2014!  Let someone else do the cooking.

Casapulla’s South, Subs, Steaks, Deli, Take Out, Restaurant, Review, A Family Business since 1956, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches

I thought it would be hard to go and review an eatery that is owned by friends.  You know how it is, you are a little apprehensive.  You never know how service/food are going to be on a specific day.  Except at Casapulla’s the service and the food have been consistent through the years.  They have plenty of experience.  In business since 1956.

Luigi Cassapulla was the Italian immigrant and patriarch of this family.  His story so interesting; vision, hard work, supportive wife and plenty of kids.

Luigi was Paula’s grandfather.  Paula and her husband, Mike, opened in Sussex County in 1984.  But, they have been at Lighthouse Plaza on Rt. 1 in Rehoboth Beach since 1997.  The tel. is 302-227-7827, or, if it is easier for you to remember then, 227-subs.  Website? www.casapullassouth.com.

img_7724

I was thinking that subs are so versatile.  They travel well; perfect for gatherings and at this time of the year; Monday Night Football.

So, I found out that subs originated in Italian American communities in the northeast; around the late 19th to mid 20th century.  In the U.S. the common denominator is the bread.  In all types, it is an oblong bread roll as opposed to sliced bread.

In Europe this type of sandwich is served on a baguette or a ciabatta.

Some say that the sub or submarine originated in Groton, Connecticut, where there is the largest United States Submarine factory.  The sandwich was commonly eaten by workers in the naval yard.

So many terms for this sandwich, depending where you are from.  For example, the term hoagie came from Philadelphia.  Hog Island was a shipyard where emergency shipping was produced for the war effort.  It has been said that the Italians working there during WWI introduced the sandwich.  At the time it was made out of a variety of meats, cheeses and lettuce between the bread.  It became known as the “Hog Island”, the “Hoagie”.

All in all, subs, submarines, hoagies and other similar ones can now be found worldwide.

I came into Casapulla’s and I found a well lit place, super clean.  Ordering is done on one side of the counter with plenty of boards showing what they have to offer.

img_7717

I met Tiffany.  I don’t know why but I always ask…if you are here eating for the first time what would you order?  She knew her menu well.  She mentioned the Italian, and one of her favorites, the Chicken Cheesesteak (with fried onions), and I wanted to also try the Turkey Stuffer.

img_7710

So, I had all 3.  The Italian with everything on it; the works.  The chicken cheesesteak was a 6 inch but the other 2 were 10 inches each.

While I was waiting for my subs to be ready I checked the store even more.  You can buy deli meats (Boar’s Head) by the pound.  Available are a wide assortment of chips.  And, they also had pastas, sauces, and pizzelles, as well.

img_7722

There is a freezer in case you just don’ t feel like cooking.  It has sausage and peppers and other goodies all homemade.  Some of those pastas and sauces could certainly be a great addition to the prepared food.  Easy or lazy cooking, whatever you want to call it.

img_7716

There was a new item on the menu this summer.  It is an Italian salad which has all the ingredients of the Italian sub, except the bread.

img_7713

Their menu is extensive.  You can check it out on the above mentioned website.  They have party platters.  They also deliver lunch to your office from Monday through Saturday.   For the Georgetown and Millsboro area, please call them between 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.  For Lewes and Rehoboth call between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.  Please remember that delivery charges are applicable.  Again, their number is 302-227-subs.

Now to my tasting in the privacy of my own home.  I would not have dared to sit at Casapulla’s with 3 subs.  I could have encountered a friend or someone else that might have thought I was going nuts.

Sub #1 – The Turkey Stuffer – Juicy store-cooked turkey breast with creamy mayo, savory stuffing and whole berry cranberry sauce.  Thanksgiving year-round.

img_7725

I thought it was delicious.  Who would not like this one?  The combination of the cranberry, the turkey and the stuffing was perfect. I must tell you that I loved the size of their sub roll.  It was not overpowering at all.  You were able to take a full bite of the sub and experience everything there without spilling all over the place.

I had to open it so that you could see it better inside.

img_7726

Sub #2 – The Italian – I like an Italian sub all the time.  It is one of my favorites.  Again, it was a good true Italian sub with all the trimmings. Genoa salami, capicola, pepered ham and provolone.

img_7727

Sub #3 – Chicken Cheesesteak – Warm, cheese melting, fried onions.  What can I say?  Thanks Tiffany.  It was definitely good.

img_7729

Paula, Mike, their kids, and their entire staff are friendly….the staff saw me taking pictures and graciously smiled…probably wondering what the heck is she doing.

img_7712

I almost forgot to tell you.  You do believe me that I did not eat all that food.  I was frantically calling my neighbors to pass on to them the other halves. Nobody was home until later.  I did find takers; Bill and Sharon.

Talk to you later….if you are driving out of town….have them prepare some subs to go…easy.

P.S.  Some of the information for this post was taken from Wikipedia.

Rehoboth Beach, ATouch of Italy, Hungry on a Cold Day, Delaware Beaches

This is a salumeria, a pasticeria and the Lewes location will soon be a trattoria, as well.

When A Touch of Italy opened in Rehoboth Beach back in October of 2009 I knew exactly what kind of product they were going to be delivering.  Lou’s mother was well known in the Bethany Beach area with an amazing bakery.

I wrote about A Touch of Italy in Rehoboth on 10/16/09 and you can see that by clicking on that month and scrolling down to the date.

So, Michael was hungry today on a cold winter’s day.  As we were doing errands in Rehoboth he remembered A Touch of Italy from when, in December, I took him after they had just opened in Lewes.  A Touch of Italy in Rehoboth; you could have found us there at around 3:00 p.m.  We were lucky because I thought maybe because of the weather, well, it could have been closed.

The Rehoboth location of A Touch of Italy is 33A Baltimore Ave., the tel. is 302-227-1500 and the website for both locations is www.touchofitalyde.com.

000_0003

Lou was there.  Once again, Michael decided to have the same hero as the one he had in Lewes.  That’s the only one he has tried.  Lou fixed him a beautiful Rocky Marciano with hot sopresata, sharp provolone cheese imported from Italy, roasted peppers and Extra Virgin Olive Oil, in a semolina bread with sesame seeds.

IMG_1357

Then I wanted some Spanish Manchego cheese.  It is one of my favorites.  Lou took a piece and then sliced a fig; what a treat that was!!

IMG_1360

We also left with some cookies, which I am sure his mother made.

Michael could not wait to get home.  Of course, he had to wait until I took a picture.  Took several, actually.  Here is another one.

IMG_1359

Again, no talking; just thumbs up enjoying what he said was the most delicious hero.  I took a bite and I kid you not when I say that I could have eaten the whole thing.  The meats, the combinations of roasted peppers and cheese, could not have been better.  Another time he will have to try something else.

The Rehoboth location will have new winter hours as of next week.  They will be closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The Lewes location opens every day and the address is 101 Second St.  Tel. 302-827-2730.

IMG_0503_1

I wrote about the Lewes location on 12/3/10.  If you would like to see that post, just click on that month and scroll down to the date.

Have a great one…talk to you later….

A Touch of Italy, Lewes, Delaware, Review, Salumeria, Pasticceria, Trattoria, Delaware Beaches

IMG_0493

Yesterday, I said to Michael that I wanted to invite him to the new Touch of Italy in Lewes.  It just opened up on the 26th.  How could he not agree to this invitation?  Irresistible, I know.  He was going to be my guinea pig.  I did not want to eat anything.  I have been eating too much and with the Holidays upon us, I needed to restrain myself a bit.

The new Touch of Italy is located at 101 Second Street, Lewes, Delaware.  Tel. 302-827-2730.  The website for Touch of Italy is www.touchofitalyde.com.

IMG_0503

The residents in Lewes must be thrilled.  Second Street has so many varied restaurants; for all tastes.  We have been watching that corner of Second St. and Savannah Rd. for months.  Now I was about to enter this Salumeria, Pasticceria and Trattoria.

Salumi is Italian for meats that are cured.  So, it is a “cured meat shop” carrying classic cured meats and sausages.

A Pasticceria is a pastry shop.  And, a Trattoria is an eatery; less formal than a restaurant; no printed menus, therefore, casual.

Touch of Italy was busy.  They are still moving things here or there but you can feel that it is going to be great.  The first thing that happened was that we were welcomed with an almond macaroon, half covered in chocolate.  I really did not want to eat it; then I did and I wanted more.  Don’t worry I did not.

Then I started to look around and take in the atmosphere of the place.  The hanging hams, cheeses and sausages reminded me when I was in Spain years ago and saw all the Serranos hams hanging from the ceilings.

IMG_0484

IMG_0485

Olives, white anchovies, roasted peppers, squid, and so much more on one section.

IMG_0490

IMG_0489

IMG_0498

Sausages, cheeses, among other delicacies in the following section.

IMG_0487

IMG_0486

The cookies and pastries, some packaged and ready to go and others waiting for us, the customers.

IMG_0483

IMG_0482

Pastas, sauces and other Italian staples were ready for purchase, as well.  These are perfect for unexpected guests.

IMG_0495

IMG_0497

I talked to Lou who is one of the owners and since they had just moved in they did not have a take-out menu yet. On the corner of the shop, in glass, for everyone to see, Michael will be making fresh mozzarella, practically every day.  That room will hold instruction but that will be announced later, after they get more settled.

IMG_0502

Tables will also be available soon so that you can eat comfortably.

Then Michael finally decided on what hero to order.  A hero sandwich is called  a Po’Boy in New Orleans, a sub in many other areas or a hoagie.  The hero sandwiches are large sandwiches on baguettes that have a distinct Italian flavor.

The basic ingredients?  2 Italian meats, and provolone cheese; condiments are varied but only oil and vinegar will coat both sides of the bread.

There is a menu board at Touch of Italy and Michael chose the Rocky Marciano.   This hero had hot sopressata, sharp provolone cheese imported from Italy, roasted peppers and extra virgin olive oil, in a homemade semolina Italian bread with sesame seeds.

IMG_0492

The sopressata is an Italian cured dry salami.  It is traditionally made out of pork; fresh hams or beef are also used and often include hot peppers.  It also has a rustic look when sliced.  It is a specialty of southern Italy.

After thanking them and offering our best wishes we ran to the car.  When Michael first opened the hero sandwich he said that it just looked like a sub, which it was, basically.  But, it was only when he bit into it that the words were; “Oh, this is so good, the best I have ever had.  No, wait, maybe second best after the one I had in New York”.  He kept on going on about the combination of the meat, the cheese and the roasted peppers all complementing each other.  The bread was outstanding.  I knew he was going to be my perfect guinea pig; he has had his share of heros/subs.  Finally, he gave me a bite; ditto.

IMG_0525

Please note that Touch of Italy has another location on 33A Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-226-1500.  I wrote a post when they first opened.  If you would like to see it, just go on the left hand side of this blog and click on October, 2009, under Archives and scroll down to the 16th.

Best wishes to Touch of Italy…..and talk to you later….

Louie’s Pizza, “Home of the Grinder”, Restaurant, Review, Pizza, Cheese Steaks, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches

IMG_0172

I don’t know why I woke up with a craving for pizza.  You see, I have not had a real pizza in over a year.  With the gluten free type of eating we do in our home, well, what can I say, I just have not had one.

There are gluten free pizzas but they really need to be improved.  Nowhere near the real thing.

Rehoboth Beach has great pizza joints.  They are institutions in our beaches.  At first I thought I would get a small pizza from each and do my own tasting.  Then I thought better; just get one each day and enjoy it slowly.

I decided to go to Louie’s Pizza located at 11 Rehoboth Ave., right by the Boardwalk.  Tel. 302-227-6002.  Website www.homeofthegrinder.com.

IMG_0183

Louie’s has been in Rehoboth since 1974.  They will close for the months of December, January and February.

They proudly say that they are “Home of the Grinder”.  A Grinder is a sub which is oven baked for 3 minutes.

You can dine in or call for take-out orders.  Two separate entrances.  Not too many smiles on their faces; they seemed to be all business.

IMG_0175

Louie’s is all about grinders, subs and pizzas.  They also serve salads, which are made to order.  No alcohol.  Their gyros are supposed to be very good, as well.

The pizza dough and sauce are made fresh daily.

I had called my pizza in.  I was going to take it home and eat only one slice.

Ha!  Easier said than done.  The moment I picked it up I proceeded to walk to the Boardwalk and sat in one of those comfortable benches overlooking the ocean and thought I had died and gone to haven the moment I bit into the pizza.

IMG_0179

It was so delicious.  Thin, well done, light, crispy and each bite was full of flavor.  The back of the pizza was baked to perfection.

IMG_0184

I had 3 slices; I am not ashame.  The pizza was not that big.  The small one was $5.95.

Enjoy the pictures because I certainly did enjoy the pizza.

Talk to you later….I have to go and walk it off….

Did I tell you that it was a gorgeous day on the beach?  Of course not, I was too busy, you know, eating.

October 25th, 2009

In Fenwick Island….at the Delaware Beaches…there is a Beach Eatery…you probably know it…it’s Ocean Side Subs & Pizza…

000_0004

Beach eateries; don’t you love them?  A come as you are type of place; from the beach, the tennis court, golf course, the gym.  It really does not matter.

If you are living on the coast you know that these beach eateries are dependable institutions.  They have been in business for many years and people keep coming to them all the time looking for the foods they are known for.

Whether you are at Hodad’s, known for burgers and shakes, on Newport Ave. in Ocean Beach, CA, or at Tommy’s Sub Shop on 28th St. and Coastal Highway in Ocean City, Maryland or Anthony’s, known for over stuffed roast beef and ham sandwiches also in Ocean City, MD, or El Gaucho Burger, whose specialties include media noches and cubanos, besides the burgers, on Ashford Ave., in Puerto Rico, or Ed’s Chicken in Dewey Beach, DE or Loui’s (great pizza and fries) on Rehoboth Ave., you know that you can count on them for the same quality of food that keeps you coming back.

One of those eateries is Ocean Side.  It is located on Coastal Highway and Virginia Ave. in Fenwick Island, Delaware.  They have been in business since 1981 and the tel. in Delaware is 302-539-5388 and from Maryland the tel. is 410-250-2695.  They accept credit cards and are open from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.  11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

The owners, who happen to be there all the time, are Bob and Sue and they have been welcoming patrons for 29 seasons.

Originally it was much smaller and some years ago they expanded and a large bar was added, as well as more dining space.  They serve beer and wine and televisions are always on so you won’t miss a thing.

The smell of pizza, fries, etc. is the first thing that hit you as you come in.  It can get quite busy in the height of the summer season.  Plenty of people come year-round.

Ocean Side is known for a variety of foods.  You will have available hot sandwiches and a favorite of a good friend, Ross, is the Chicken Fingers Parmesan.  He tells everyone to try it and it has become a local favorite.

They also offer cold sandwiches, hot and cold subs and wraps.  Cheese Steak is another local favorite. Plenty of side orders and munchies, as well.

Ocean Side is also very well known for their pizza and strombobbi.  Pizza specials are on the menu every day. And, after 5 p.m. the homemade spaghetti and meatballs will be ready.

The other day I ordered a Chef’s Salad for carry out and it was very good; they have about 7 other salads besides the one I chose.

All in all it is a very popular place.  You probably have been there already and know what I am talking about.  The parking is easier in the second season vs. the summer.  It is located on a strip mall, so it can get crowded, but you will get there.

Let me know how you like it because my choices are usually pizza or salad and have not tried a lot of their other offerings.

I hope you had a good week-end.  I certainly did.  Getting together with friends; sharing lots of laughs; perfect!

Talk to you later….
