Destination?  Lewes, Delaware!!  This seaside, quaint and historic town was the first first settled by the Dutch in 1631.  Named Swanendael which also means Valley of the Swans.  It is located right at Cape Henlopen, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Delaware Bay.

Lewes is a year round resort with many events, activities, and entertainment being offered practically every week-end.  The town is very walkable with plenty of restaurants and shops, art galleries and museums.

The Visitor Center and Lewes Chamber of Commerce  are located at 120 Kings Highway, in the historic Fisher-Martin House next to the Zwaanendael Museum.

So….What’s Going On?

Saturday, 10/5, Sunday, 10/6 – “TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME” – Mid-Atlantic VBBL Championship Tournament.  The Lewes Historical Society is the home of the Lewes Vintage Base Ball Club.  This is a vintage ball club that participates in the Mid Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League and a member of the Vintage Base Ball Association.  They play the games at the University of Delaware Lewes Campus near the Virden Conference Center at 700 Pilottown Rd.  The earlies known reference as of today, of baseball in Lewes, is from February 1874 when a match between Lewes and Milton was advertised for March 1, 1874.

Rules are a bit different:  The ability to catch the ball on one bounce for an out and no gloves are permitted for fielders.  Pitchers throw underhand; batters are called strikers; foul balls can be caught on the bounce for an out.

The tournament on Saturday and Sunday starts at Noon.  It looks like the weather will be perfect for a day at the park!!

Saturday, 10/5 – LEWES HISTORICAL SOCIETY OCTOBER CRAFT FAIR – 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Historical Complex located at Second & Shipcarpenter Streets, one block from downtown Historic Lewes.  This is a very popular fair, bringing many visitors to Lewes.  There will be many fine crafstmen from Delaware and the Eastern Shore, exhibiting crafts in the media ranging from pottery to woodworking.  Listen to live music, walk through the historical sites and enjoy a beautiful Second Season in Lewes.

Saturday, 10/5 – LEWES IN BLOOM PLANT SALE – As you walk through Historic Lewes, please stop by 2nd & Bank Street for the Lewes in Bloom Plant Sale, which will start at 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.  More info?  Please visit http://www.lewesinbloom.org.

Saturday, 10/5 – FALL HISTORIC LEWES FARMERS’ MARKET – The Historic Lewes Farmers Market has added a Fall Market which begins today, Saturday, 10/5 until Saturday, November  23rd, which is the last Saturday before Thanksgiving.  It will be located at Shields Elementary School Public Parking Lot on Savannah Rd. & Sussex Drive.  Your favorite vendors will be there…fall veggies, fruits, flowers…More info?  Please visit http://www.historiclewesfarmersmarket.org.

Saturday, 10/5, Sunday, 10/6 – FALL SALE IN HISTORIC LEWES – Merchants are offering plenty of sales on Saturday and Sunday throughout the Historic Lewes Commercial District….great merchandise at amazing prices.  10 a.m. through 5 p.m.

Saturday, 10/5 – SHIPWRECKS, STORMS & SCIENCE – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Zwaanendael Museum.  Today, Saturday, will be a long slate of historical games and maritime history, and archaeology activities.  At 2 p .m. there will be a presentation on the Roosevelt Inlet and DeBraak shipwrecks.  Please call 302-645-1148 for more info.

Saturday, 10/5 – LEWES’ 18TH ANNUAL BOAST THE COAST MARITIME FESTIVAL – 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.  Maritime-themed activities throughout the day and into the evening.  The Boast the Coast activities in 1812 Park and at the City Duck will begin at 11 a.m. The Lighted Boat Parade culminates the day’s activities at dusk on the canal.  To check the schedule of activities, please visit http://www.leweschamber.com/event/chamber-events/lewes-18th-annual-boast-coast.maritime-festival.

Sunday, 10/6 – RUN 4 THE HOUSE 5K – 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. – Join Irish Eyes and help support families with seriously ill or injured children staying at the Ronal McDonal House of Delaware.  This is the 2nd annual 5K Run/Walk on Sundahy.  Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the race starting at 9 a.m.  Irish Eyes will be hosting a post party with free drinks and food.

Registration on the day of the race is $25.  Student entry is $20.  Ronald McDonald will be on hand for free 1k Children’s Run for children 10 and under.  Ribbons will be awarded to all children who finish.  Free t-shirts for all registered runners and walkers.  For more information on the race and the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, please visit http://www.running4thehouse.com.

Festivities in Historic Lewes this week-end are not to be missed!  So, What’s Going On?

Friday, 5/3 – Sunday, 5/5 – Merchants’ Spring Sidewalk Sale will be taking place in the Historic Lewes Commercial District around Second Street.  Their 3-day sale begins Friday and ends on Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Friday, 5/3 – A Todo El Mundo Le Gusta La Fiesta (Everyone Loves a Party) – Lewes’ First Fiesta on Friday night is sponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Historic Lewes Business Committee.  Please note that Market Street, between Front Street and Second Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and the event will take place from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

The “Fun Friday” events began two years ago to encourage people to come to Lewes on Friday and extend their week-end in the fall and spring.  Previous events include the “Lewes Celebrates the Royal Wedding”, an Italian Festival and an Oktoberfest.

The Fun Friday Fiesta will incorporate aspects of May Day and Cinco de Mayo celebrations during the hours of the event.  Mariachi music will set the stage for a fun-filled 2 hours that the whole family will enjoy.  Kids Cottage will be hosting a craft project where children will be able to make their own miniature May Poles.  Fiesta-themed children’s games, including pinatas, a cactus rig toss and a bean bag toss will be set up in Mary Vessels Park, located on Market Street.  Commemorative glasses, sponsored by United Distributors, a distributor of El Jimador Blanco tequila, will be on sale for $5 at the Chamber’s visitor center in the Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park, next to the museum and at the festival site beginning at 4 p.m. on May 3rd.  On that day, the glasses can be taken into participating restaurants and presented to receive a discount on margarita drinks that day.

Fiesta themed cuisine will be featured in many of the restaurants located in the historic business district.  The Buttery Restaurant, Jerry’s Seafood Restaurant, and a Touch of Italy will be selling fiesta cuisine on Market Street from 5 p.m. –  7 p.m. on May 3rd.

A complete list of Fun Friday Fiesta activities hosted by the participating businesses in the historic business district surrounding Second Street will be available the day of the event.

Saturday, 5/4 – The 18th Annual Lewes British Motorcar Show, “The British are coming…Again”, will welcome a wide array of classic British vehicles to Lewes on Saturday.  (No rain date.)  The Lewes Chamber of Commerce sponsors the show with asssitance from the British Car Club of Delaware.  It will be held from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Lewes Historical Society Complex, at Third and Shipcarpenter Streets in Lewes.

Eighteen years ago, Car Show Chairman, Mike Tyler, and the British Car Club of Delaware originated the concept of staging a British Motorcar Show in the spring to attract visitors to Lewes before the summer season got into full swing.  Each year the show features a different marque.  The 2013 Featured Marque is the Lotus Seven.  The Lotus Group of Companies was formed in 1959 and focuses on road cars and customer competition car production.

Accoarding to Betsy Reamer, Executive Director of the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, “The popularity of this show has continued to grow over the years and the change of venue to the Lewes Historical Society several years ago significantly increased attendance to the show.  Car Show attendees not only are able to view the cars but their entrance fee allow them to tour the Society’s historic buildings, one of Lewes’ premier attractions.”

Mike DiPaolo, Executive Director of the Lewes Historical Society, has been working with the other members of the Car show committee for the past 10 years.  “Our historic buildings will be open free of charge as part of the show because folks coming to the show as well as car collectors have interest in things historic.” he said.

One of the most popular features of the show is the Society’s concession stand, “Hiram’s Pub”, serving traditional British pub entrees, English soft drinks, British tea and British ales.  This year, The Rose & Crown Restaurant will be operating Hiram’s Pub during the hours of the show.

The Car Show will conclude at 3 p.m. with the Winner’s Circle Parade down Second Street.  Admission is $3 for adults and children under 12 are free.  For more info. and to register a car in advance, call the Lewes Chamber of Commerce at 302-645-8073.  The fee to register the car in advance is $15 and $25 on May 4th.  Car entrants can download the entry form by visiting the Chamber’s website at http://www.leweschamber.com, click on Calendar of Events and scroll down to British Motorcar Show entry form.

Looks like Lewes is the place to be this week-end at the Delaware Beaches.

Hope you are coming to visit the Delaware Beaches….because, the Second Season is in full swing!!  Historic Lewes, Delaware a packed Saturday, 10/6!!

The Lewes Chamber of Commerce presents the 17th Annual Boast the Coast event that will be taking place in Lewes on Saturday, October 6th.  There will be maritime-themed activities throughout the day and into the evening.

The Boast the Coast activities in 1812 Park and the City Dock, located along Front St. near Canalfront Park Marina, begin at 11:00 a.m.  Other events taking place that day include the Lewes Historical Society Craft Show, the Lewes in Bloom Fall Plant Sale beginning at 9 a.m. and the Historic District Merchants’ Fall Sidewalk Sale from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

The Lighted Boat Parade culminates the day’s activities at dusk on the canal.  Lewes Mayor Jim Ford will announce the parade from the judge’s reviewing stand at Fisherman’s Wharf.

The free boat tours at the City Dock, located on Front Street, begin at 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.  For the first time, the boat tours will be offered on the newest addition to the Lewes Canal – The Cape Water Taxi.  The taxi will take passengers for a short ride on the canal.  The Lewes Fire Department’s Fire Boat also will be at the City Dock, offering the opportunity to tour their vessel.

A Seafood Tasting  at 1812 Park will part of the festivities of the day.  It will feature specialties priced individually, prepared by numerous chamber-member restaurants.

The much loved, Family Fun Tent, will also be at 1812 Park, featuring entertainment by Flumpa the Tree Frog’s musical show, and Chuckles the Clown’s pirate-themed magic show.

The Lewes Historical Society’s Maritime History museum located in the Cannonball House, located on Front Street, will open from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. for free tours featuring their extensive collection reflecting Lewes’ maritime history.

The Lightship Overfalls, berthed in the Canalfront Park on Front Street and designated a National Historic Landmark, will be open for free tours from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Boats participating in the Lighted Boat Parade will leave Roosevelt Inlet around 6:30 p.m. and arrive at the City Dock/Fisherman’s Wharf area around 7 p.m.

The event chairman, Lewes Chamber of Commerce board member, Orville Mills, of George Sherman Corp. will serve as Head Judge and with the other judges will view the Lighted Boat Parade from the deck of one of the boats at Fisherman’s Wharf.

Note:  It does not cost anything for boat owners to enter the parade and all registered boat entries will be eligible for 3 cash prizes.  To register, boat owners can pick up entries at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce visitor center in the Fisher-Martin House next to the Zwaanendale Museum or call 302-645–8073 to have one mailed.  All registrations must be received by Noon, Saturday, October 6th!!
