It was going to be my first time visiting Catch 54 after last year’s fire, when they had to completely rebuild the restaurant. Since their opening, at the beginning of the summer, people kept telling me how cool it had turned out. Well, it has taken me until last week to stop by with friends and enjoy a night of laughter, good food, awesome views and great service.
Catch 54 is part of the family of restaurants under SoDel Concepts, http://www.sodelconcepts.com. It is, also, one of Matt Haley’s restaurants.
Catch 54 is located at 38931 Madison Ave., Fenwick Island, DE 19944. Tel. 302-436-8600. Website? http://www.catch54.com. If you are traveling on Coastal Highway, please turn west at the intersection of Rt. 54 and Coastal Highway (Rt. 1), cross over the bridge. You’ll see the restaurant on your right. Turn right, you will find plenty of parking available. Catch 54 is also located on the same spot as Shark’s Cove Marina. The restaurant opens 7 days a week at 11:30 a.m. Happy hour, from 12 until 6 p.m. They do not accept reservations. You can find Catch 54 on Facebook and Twitter.
From Rehoboth Beach, it takes about half an hour, give or take, with the summer traffic. I was rushing to get there before sunset. Catch 54 has one of the most gorgeous views at our Delaware Beaches. It sits right at Little Assawoman Bay; the salt marshes that line the bay are home of many species of waterfowl. At that time of the evening is breathtaking, serene, and peaceful.
Since I don’t like to wait at restaurants, I have started eating late during the height of the season at the Delaware Beaches. So, we decided to meet at around 7:45 p.m., thinking that people would be almost on their way out. Surprised surprise, there were people waiting. No problem, I just went around to take pictures, some sat at the bar, waiting to be called. No rush. Catch 54 has 2 floors with a bar on each one.
At the upstairs bar, there are also booths available for dining, as well.
It was a beautiful evening so the restaurant was showing off how pretty it looked at night.
Indoors is light, and modern, exhibiting the casual atmosphere of our beaches.
There are 2 decks with tables for dining al fresco.
The outdoor dining tables were going to take some time, so we decided to eat indoors. The restaurant has glass windows throughout so you have an excellent view if you are indoors.
Our server came to get us. His name was Michael. As we are walking to our table, I proceeded to tell him that one person in our party had to eat gluten free. His answer? No problem, I have had Celiac disease since I was young. I know exactly what your dietary requirements are. Worry free eating!! No questions!! I bet Catch 54 does not know what an asset he, actually is. It turned out that Michael was also a fantastic server. Very attentive and his suggestions were perfect.
It goes without saying that when I have lunch or dinner with friends….they cannot touch their food until I take pictures. A few try to dive into their entrees, but are usually stopped on their tracks. I also want them to, honestly, tell me how their dinner was.
So, here is what we ordered.
Oysters on the half shell were ordered; the saltier, the better. Chincoteague Salts came on ice and were delicious.
A friend ordered the Heirloom Tomato Salad, on toast, with herbs, grilled red onion, blue cheese, and a Dijon garlic vinaigrette. The tomatoes are still so tasty; green, red, and yellow.
I went with the Crab & Clam Cakes. I thought they sounded different. They had bacon, Parmesan, spicy mayo, micro beets and lemon. They were soooo good. It really was a good combination. Definitely, would order them again in a heart beat.
For our entrees:
A couple decided to order the Fish Camp Stew. It had fresh fin fish, shellfish, white wine, tomato butter broth, and toast. One came without the toast because of the gluten allergy. It had a well seasoned broth, very light and plenty of seafood.
Another person decided to order the Day Boat Scallops on cheese grits, sweet corn, zucchini and PBR tomato jus. She really enjoyed them, and thought they were very good; cooked to perfection.
I loved my fish. I really did. I had the Pan Roasted Whole Trout, on roasted farm beans, Crimini mushrooms, almonds, and lemon butter. The whole fish was so flavorful. I would, definitely, order it again.
Dessert:
We decided to order two desserts.
The Roasted Summer Peach Bread Pudding was served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and caramel. Comfort dessert! Not overly sweet, either.
A Lemon Icebox Pie with Blueberries was the second dessert. Sort of like a key lime pie, except lemons were used.
The person that had to eat gluten free is hoping that Catch 54 brings back a dessert called Flourless Chocolate Torte. This dessert was so good whether you had to eat gluten free or not.
Our Delaware Beaches are full of wonderful restaurants. It really is a dining destination for many. We are so lucky!!
Note: Catch 54 also has a kid’s menu!!
Have a great week! Talk to you later….you know I will.

Eating is not merely a material pleasure. Eating well gives a spectacular joy to life and contributes immensely to goodwill and happy companionship. It is of great importance to the morale. e. schiaparelli
This post is reviewing Fish On! twice in one week!!
It was Sunday night when a friend came over to visit. I was probably on a lazy kind of mood. A crowded and hot week-end at the Delaware Beaches. Plain and simple; I did not feel like cooking. So, I chose Fish On! We are so lucky to have all these wonderful restaurants in our beaches. I have to hand it to you, Chefs, because you are doing a great job in keeping all of us interested in your culinary surprises.
Fish On is part of the SoDel Concepts group of restaurants that extend up and down our coastal beaches. Owner and Executive Chef is Matt Haley. It is located at 17300 North Village Main Blvd., Villages of Five Points, Lewes, Delaware 19958. Tel. 302-645-9790. Website? http://www.fishon.bz
Fish On! does not take reservations. That is not bothering me anymore. I am eating late this summer. Love having the restaurants almost all to myself at that time. Fish On! has plenty of parking. The restaurant offers outdoor dining. So, on a beautiful Delmarva night, please take advantage of a pretty nice setting. Eating outdoors is the best.
On Sunday evening the restaurant was comfortably crowded when we arrived. Not soon afterwards, just a few having a leisure coffee and desert.
Our server was Stefana. I have to tell you that she was so pleasant; knew the menu well. Gluten free awareness? Oh yes, she was very well aware of the allergy.
Bread was brought to the table. Even though the bread looked simple, it was a little bit sweet; not overly so. It is baked daily in-house.
I decided to have their Charred Asparagus Soup. It was creamy, full of flavor, with a creme fraiche and basil oil.
Two orders of Pan Seared Halibut, with grilled peach, black bean and corn salsa, cumin and paprika roasted potatoes. Gluten Free!! Got great reviews from my fellow diners.
I decided to go with the Seared Seabass, with summer squash and sweet potato ribbons, and a lemon herb gremolata. It melted in your mouth, the vegetables were perfectly cooked. The picture does not lie. It looked and tasted that good.
Perfectly satisfied, we just had some coffee.
Tuesday evening. Quiet after the hectic week-end. You could see that the traffic was taking it easy. Once again, we decided to go to Fish On! The scallops were calling my husband.
Fish On! was a little more subdued; we also went pretty late.
My choice was the Bean, Corn, and Chicken Soup. It was “brothy”, light and it had been cooked with jalapenos, so there was a nice kick to it. Loved it.
Fish Tacos for my next entree. Shaved brussels sprouts, pickled onions, corn tortillas. Guess what? I learned something new. The fish was called swai. I had never heard of it. It is pronounced sweye. Similar to catfish but with a milder flavor and more delicate texture. It is from Vietnam. Even people that do not like fish, tend to really enjoy this very much versatile fish that can be broiled, baked, sauteed, and fried. My Fish Tacos were delicious and a very healthy portion indeed.
When restaurants are not crowded it is the perfect opportunity to maybe be able to change something on the menu. Fish On! was more than happy to oblige.
The Scallops were ordered. They would have arrived accompanied by summer vegetables and a chorizo succotash. Not sure if the chorizo was gluten free, we decided to replace those with the Roasted Red & Gold Beets; no blue cheese, mustard vinaigrette on the side. Both were outstanding!!
Please note that restaurants get so busy that many times they can not be substituting one thing for another. So…ask but be understanding of their situation.
Again, a little chat here or there with Stefana….and until next time.
Fish On! opens 7 days a week at 5:00 p.m.
A Children’s Menu is also available. Other offerings, besides seafood, are on the menu, as well.
Have a good one!! ttyl g

“We’re preserving the past and promoting the future…one brick at a time.” lynn lester
I ended my last post by saying that, afterall, one had to eat. I went to The Brick Hotel as a guest of Jamie and Leslie. Remember? They were the two friends that gave me that amazing tour of the Easter Seals in Georgetown.
The Brick Hotel is not far. I was excited because I have been meaning to visit the restaurant. I had heard great things. And you know what? They did not disappoint.
Georgetown, Delaware, is the County Seat of Sussex County. The center of the town is built around The Circle. The Circle is surrounded by the Town Hall, State and County buildings, including the Sussex County Courthouse.
The Brick Hotel is also located on The Circle. The location is 18 The Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947. Tel. 302-855-5800. Toll free 877-88-BRICK. Website? www.thebrickhotel.com.
Lynn Lester is the Owner and Innkeeper. E-mail address relax@thebrickhotel.com.
The pineapple is a symbol of hospitality and The Brick Hotel’s symbol as well.
We arrived at the Brick Hotel just as they were opening for lunch. We were the first ones. The perfect opportunity for those Kodak moments.
This hotel was built in 1836. The building is one of the few early commercial buildings remaining in Southern Delaware. The brick used was made from a kiln near Georgetown. Through its life it has operated as a hotel for 100 years. But, also over the years the building has been used for other purposes, as well.
For many years it was the Wilmington Trust Bank. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was renovated in 2008, preserving the historical elements of the building. It is a piece of Georgetown’s history. If you want to read more about its history and about the building itself, please visit http://www.thebrickhotel.com/history.php.
Lynn was introduced and she graciously took us on a tour of The Brick Hotel. The Hotel has 14 rooms. Each room has a history and you can read about them on the website, www.thebrickhotel.com.
The rooms have all been renovated.
The bathrooms looked great.
The fireplaces are all originals, but gas inserts have been introduced.
Some rooms have access to the veranda; a wonderful place to sit and relax and look out to The Circle. Come to think of it, it would be the perfect place to watch Return Day. Delaware celebrates Return Day with plenty of festivities. It takes place 2 days after the national election with the losers and winners congregating on The Circle to “bury the hatchet” so to speak. The end of an election year and, really, the beginning of another. If you want to find out more about Return Day, please visit www.returnday.org.
Through the Hotel there are parlors to sit and relax; read or watch t.v. or get acquainted with other guests.
The Brick Hotel is available for corporate events, weddings, visiting groups, and special events. It has the restaurant, a tavern and a rooftop garden.
The Rooftop Garden was pretty large. Probably a great place to have an event.
The tavern was cozy and comfortable.
There are a couple of dining rooms. One larger than the other and a bit more formal.
There is also a private dining room.
We stopped to look at a masive door. What a conversation piece!! Remember when I mentioned that this building was also the Wilmington Trust Bank? Well, the vault is now the wine cellar.
We chose to eat in the more casual room.
The wood floors were original and beautifully preserved.
A few antique artifacts caught our attention.
We chose our table and proceeded to order.
Jamie always orders at The Brick Hotel their Classic Burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and a special sauce.
Leslie ordered the Grilled Portobello on a brioche with roasted vegetables and greens.
Our waitress told me that they had just finished making the pulled pork. That was a no brainer. I had the Pulled Pork Slammers in beer-braised BBQ sauce with coleslaw. All of our fries were delicious.
We had a wonderful lunch. Very satisfied; no need for dessert. The service was attentive and the prices were reasonable.
And, guess who came to have lunch, as well? Our governor, Jack Markell. You can tell you are in a small state when the governor arrives for lunch with hardly an entourage and stops to say hello to fellow diners.
I truly enjoyed it. I think it is the perfect place to have a quiet dinner. There is parking available and it is only about 20 minutes from the Delaware Beaches.
Note: On June 16th, Karen Murdock, a vocalist, who has been entertaining for the past year at The Brick Hotel will be performing nothing but Broadway tunes on the Rooftop Garden Terrace. It is called Broadway Under the Stars. 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Dinner will be served on the Rooftop with their featured dish being a Lobster Dinner for $19.99.
Please also note that some information for this post was taken from The Brick Hotel’s website.
The Brick Hotel is able to accommodate customers with food related allergies.
Talk to you later. Have a great one!!

With such a gorgeous South Florida day, who wants to be indoors, or eat indoors, when you have so many restaurants in Delray, that offer al fresco dining?
We picked City Oyster because of its consistency; a dependable restaurant, offering a relaxed dining atmosphere. It was one of the restaurants that we first visited when we arrived in Delray years ago. Lunch, dinner or a drink at the bar, your pick. For us, it was lunch.
City Oyster is part of the group of restaurants owned by the Big Time Restaurant Group. It is located at 213 E. Atlantic Ave. Tel. 561-272-0220. Website? www.bigtimerestaurants.com.
It is open for lunch Monday through Saturday from 11:30 to 2:30 p.m.
For Dinner the schedule is as follows:
Sunday, 5 until 10 p.m.
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, they start serving dinner at 5 until 10 p.m.
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, dinner will start at 5 until 11 p.m.
On Saturday and Sunday City Oyster offers a brunch from 11:30 until 2:30 p.m.
I was delighted to see today on their chalk board, Dogfish 60 Minute IPA, our own Delaware beer. The board will show the Daily Beers on Tap, as well as a list of the oysters available for the day; other daily seafood too.
The bar runs the length of the restaurant.
Today everyone was sitting outside. The tables were closely assembled. As we waited for wine, which by the way it took a little longer than it should have, the gentleman on one side was choking (he got the help needed), on another side the guy sent his food back but then it looked like the same food came back. Go figure. And, the young woman that was savoring her fish tacos started to quietly cry. It was not the food, I know that. I think she got sentimental. The guy with her seemed very nice. Didn’t I tell you the tables were closely assembled?
Thank God our food came out and my attention was directed to my Grilled Mahi Mahi, which was the fish of the day, on a French garden salad. Tomatoes, broccoli, shallots, Mesclum with homemade aioli and a mustard vinaigrette. It was delicious and I really loved the fish.
My husband decided on Blue Point oysters and a side order of Red Bliss Potato Salad.
That was it!! No other excitement or drama….
Talk to you later…have a good one!!

New York City was a little cold and windy when I visited at the end of March. That did not stop us from walking and enjoying some of the many attractions that this international city has to offer.
Eating in New York is an experience and everyone has an opinion to which restaurant to try.
I was visiting New York to catch up with my cousins who were traveling back to Puerto Rico from Spain. The three of us were going to also get together with a childhood friend. I cannot believe we had not seen him in probably 38 to 40 years.
When I was talking to him on the phone and were trying to figure out where to go, I told him I wanted an intimate restaurant, where we could catch up after so many years.
Luigi delivered a neat restaurant called Aroma Kitchen & Wine Bar. It is in the Historic District of NoHo, at 36 East 4th St., between Lafayette & Bowery. Tel. 212-375-0100. Website? http://www.aromanyc.com. Aroma opens 7 days a week.
In the 1970s and 80s artists started to occupy the area’s loft buildings, calling it NoHo to distinguish it from SoHo. NoHo was previously known as “warehouse district”. The Historic District of NoHo extends from north of Houston St. to East 9th St., and east from Broadway and Mercer to Lafayette St., and west of Cooper Square. This district remains intact. If you want to know more, please visit http://www.nohony.org.
Aroma opened in 2005 and already is the recipient of several accolades: Michelin 2012 Bib Gourmand Pick, 2012 Top 10 Wine Bars in NYC, and 2012 Top Value Restaurant in NYC, and New York Sexiest Wine Lists, among others.
The bar was at the front of the restaurant, right as you stepped in. There were different dining areas at Aroma; Main Dining Room, Farmhouse Room and La Tavernetta Room. We were escorted down through very narrow stairs to the Farmhouse Room, which gave me the feel of a wine cellar in a country side home. It was so cozy with a communal table, lit with candles and chandeliers. Very intimate, indeed.
Luigi came in looking “igualito”; just as we remembered him. Same smile. Quickly put us up to date on his life, as we waited for Aroma’s sommelier to come to our table to help us with the wine selections. They do have an extensive wine list.
Bread, olives and olive oil were immediately brought to the table. It is worth mentioning most everything is made in-house.
So, we wanted to start with a few appetizers.
An order of Arancini. Arancinis are fried; sometimes baked rice balls coated with breadcrums. Different fillings could be used. To tell you the truth, I had never had them and immediately knew I would like to try making them. It is a very old recipe and the word comes from Arancia which means orange in Italian. It is just the look; nothing to do with oranges.
We also ordered the meatballs. Neapolitan ragu, and smoked mozzarella. They were very good. One order for dinner, as well.
An order of grilled baby octopus with corona beans, potatoes, paprika and mint oil.
For dinner, an order of potato gnocchi gratin, porcini, truffle bechamel and fontina. My cousin commented that they were very good and perfect portion, as well.
I decided to have the strascinati pasta dish. Wild mushroom sofrito, spicy lamb sausage, roasted peppers, moliterno. The strascinati pasta is a simple pasta; only flour, semolina and water. It looks like an orecchiette pasta. It had a nice kick to it and loved it.
Luigi, who comes to Aroma often, ordered Leidy’s pork short ribs with smoked paprika, shiitake, and Anson Mills polenta. They looked beautiful and he said they were delicious, as well.
Even with everything we had eaten so far, we still had room for dessert. Too good to pass.
For me the chamomile panna cotta, moscato, poached figs and mascarpone what the dessert to get. I love figs; I do have my own tree in Rehoboth Beach. The panna cotta is the simmering together of cream, milk and sugar. Then, mixing all of this with gelating and letting it cool.
Some other ones preferred the molten chocolate cake, vanilla gelato and nutella cream.
And, Luigi decided on Di Palo ricotta cheese cake, berries, orange curd and grapefruit.
Coffee and more laughter ended one very nice evening…
Margie & Sonia (cousins) and the stairs.
Note: Aroma has space to hold special events for large parties and private events. Check the website and give them a call.
By the way, how could I forget? Our service was excellent!!
March 18th, 2012
I had to get out of town, pronto. Streets blocked in Delray and the traffic was at a standstill. There was a St. Patrick’s Parade to attend to. North on A1A is where we went. Palm Beach, our destination. On a gorgeous day like Saturday, the scenery was very much appreciated.
No parking on Worth Ave.; we kept on going past the Breakers and took a left right on Royal Poinciana Way. We stopped at Nick & Johnnie’s. You cannot miss it; right on the corner. The actual address is 207 Royal Poinciana Way, Palm Beach, FL 33480. Tel. 561-655-3319. Website? www.nickandjohnniespb.com.
Nick & Johnnie’s was not particularly crowded. It was also going to be a late lunch. We chose a table on their street side open air balcony. A few drinks were ordered and I was checking the restaurant out as we waited. Large bar and open air rooms. I liked it. I had been there before, but this was the first post to be written. I had forgotten if I had liked it before or not. Hmmm….I guess I would find soon enough.
My drink arrived. It was a “Green” Drink; not just for St. Patrick’s. It was made out of spinach, Kiwi, lime, parsley, kale, pineapple and apple. I took a sip and liked it. Offered to my friend; his answer? That’s different. When someone says that, I figure they did not like it. My husband thought it was good too. It was earthy and refreshing, if there is such a thing.
We were hungry and ordered immediately, by-passing any appetizers.
Our friend ordered the Fish & Chips – Local fish. The catch was pompano. It was beer battered, fries, and a Key Lime tarter. It looked beautiful. I hoped it tasted as good as it looked. He said it was moist and with just the right about of batter. The fries were nice and crispy.
My husband had the grilled salmon, with grilled asparagus, lemon and a bearnaise sauce. I am usually the one ordering salmon in every restaurant. The thing was that those fish tacos were calling my name. He said the salmon was perfectly cooked and seasoned.
Years ago I had for the first time fish tacos in San Diego, California. All those years ago and I never have even gotten close to getting others as good as those in San Diego. Guess what? On Saturday, at Nick & Johnnie’s I did. Again, they used the local catch, pompano. It was called San Felipe Fish Tacos. Everything was outstanding, starting with the fish, perfectly grilled, the cabbage, the pico and the white sauce. A side order of arugula salad with a lime dressing was the perfect addition to my dish. The tortillas were also homemade. If they are consistent with this one; they will have a winner.
No dessert, we were comfortably full. It is worth mentioning that all portions were very generous.
We all agreed that it was one of the few times, out to eat that we all liked everything we had. It was a nice afternoon…
Note: Nick & Johnnie’s offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Sunday Brunch, as well. Check the website since they also have entertainment. You can find them on Facebook, Linkedin, and Twitter.
Note: When the drinks first were ordered, the rum requested was Myers. Myers and Tonic. The drinks did not taste right. To the bar my husband went. Talking to the bartender; just give me Myers and Coke. We don’t have Myers. Then, why didn’t you have the server say you did not have any, instead of passing a lower grade of rum instead. She sounded offended that the drinks wanted to be changed. Should not have happened. Customers know what they like.
Talk to you later…have a good one!!
March 4th, 2012
Not having gone out of the house all day, on Saturday, we decided to take a drive through Rehoboth Ave. I could not believe how crowded it was. It had been a rainy day, but at this time of the evening, the weather had cleared, and visitors were ready to start their evening.
Downtown Rehoboth Beach is a very walkable town; restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues are at close proximity.
We decided to stop at Fins located at 243 Rehoboth Avenue. Tel. 302-226-FIN. Website? www.finsrawbar.com.
We just wanted a few drinks and some of their delicious oysters and clams. It is a full fledge restaurant, but we chose their Bar. It had a cozy atmosphere; crowded. The saying “where everyone is your friend”, fits them perfectly.
Fins has two floors for dining, but, you can also eat at the bar.
It is well known for the seafood, but the restaurant offers beef and chicken dishes from local purveyors, as well. Sandwiches like lobster rolls, po’ boys, crabcakes; and hamburgers, soups you name it. A description of their dishes are found on the website. But, better yet, pay them a visit. They are open 7 days a week for dinner starting at 4:00 p.m. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, Fins opens for lunch, as well, from 11:30 until 4:00 p.m.
We came in and immediately decided to check their oyster menu. It changes all the time, with Fins, offering the freshest oysters available. Oysters are inspected right after they have been shucked. No way are you going to get a bad oyster here.
The beer board was up offering also custom crafted beers. To the right you can see percentages of the alcohol level found in each.
A little conversation here or there with some of the patrons…it was time to order some oysters. The first oysters ordered were Blue Points; plump, meaty and sweet.
The next oysters ordered were the White Caps. These oysters were smaller but so delicious. Salty, which is the way we like them.
I decided to go with steamed clams. I love raw oysters but really do enjoy the clams, as well. These clams were so good; small and tasty. More than a dozen were ordered.
Having satisfied our cravings, we decided to go home. It was getting to the point when plenty of diners were arriving. This restaurant is one of those neighborhood restaurants that can mingle their more matured customers with the younger crowd. It really was fun to watch.
Have a great day!!
February 15th, 2012
Islamorada Fish Company was one of the restaurants a friend told us to stop by on the way to the Keys. It could be visited either when driving south or north, depending on the time of the day. This restaurant is located at 81532 Overseas Hwy., Isla Morada, FL 33036. Tel. 305-664-9271.
Islamorada Fish Co. opens for lunch and dinner 7 days a week; 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. It is 1 1/2 hours south of Miami or 2 hours north of Key West. This restaurant is part of the Bass Pro Shops that are found around the country. They say that Isla Morada is known as the “sportfishing capital of the world”.
We were getting hungry so the moment we saw it, we stopped. The first thing we saw was the seafood market. We continued to the back of the market and found a beautiful setting for this waterside restaurant. I could not believe how cool it was; 68 degrees!!
Islamorada Fish Co. is a venue for special occasions; weddings, rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, etc. etc. It is also kid friendly.
All of a sudden the water was splashing; tarpons, nurse sharks and pelicans were all eating some of the fish thrown at them.
The restaurant was casual and comfortably crowded. We decided on an appetizer of flash fried alligator. It had been a long time since I had alligator. This one was tender; the taste was more like veal.
2 Greek Salads were ordered with grilled lobster on top. We were not sure if the lobster was going to be too dry; it was perfectly cooked and it was delicious.
My husband ordered the dinner entree of grilled lobster and he thought the same thing. The lobsters were juice and certainly very good.
All we needed was a little bit of sun….we would have to wait until the next day for sunshine.
Talk to you later…
