Destination? The Flying Fish, Cafe, Sushi Bar, The Village of Fenwick, Fenwick Island, Delaware, Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches

I have written before about this restaurant that is all the rave in Coastal Delaware.  It is located at The Village of Fenwick at 300 Coastal Highway, Unit #7.  Tel. 302-581-0217.  Website?  http://www.flyingfishfenwick.com.  It is open Wednesday through Sunday, at this time of the year, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. or so.  Reservations are accepted and carryout is available.  Check the website for more info. and details on their menu.

It was the perfect early evening to have something light to eat after the Thanksgiving dining etravaganza.  It really did feel so good.  Light, tasty, great atmosphere, fantastic service, small and intimate.

An order of sashimi black snapper.  The sauce was a ponzu sauce that was awesome and different!!  Craig, our server, suggested it and it really was that good.

An order of Avocado Roll, another order of The Bangkok Dangerous, which was flash fried tuna and salmon roll topped with a unique muddled pepper blend, lump crab, spicy mayo, and their sweet special and spicy Bangkok sauce, and an order of the Bermuda Roll…shrimp, toasted coconut, avocado, and pineapple roll with a miso drizzle.

My order consisted of the following:  The Citrus Salmon Roll had shrimp, avocado, yuzu mayo, and bits rolled and draped with seared salmon toro, shiso, and tobiko. The other roll was The Eel Deal; flash fried avocado and tamago roll topped with spicy mayo, tobiko, and crispy BBBQ eel.  Both delicious rolls and again, thanks to Craig for helping in the suggestions.  Please note that the word shiso, which I did not know what it was, means an herb also known as Japanese basil.  It has a mixture of flavors…hints of basil, mint and cumin.

Saketumi, Modern Asian Cuisine, Sake, Restaurant, Lounge, Review, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, Plenty of Parking!!

Saketumi is around the corner from my house, practically so.  I love going there.  It is hassle free, plenty of parking, the food is soooo good.  When I go into the restaurant, Kim, the Manager is usually around.  He is the friendliest person.  I love to talk to him.  He has so much to say and he is so interesting.  The servers?  Just as friendly, and very knowledgeable.

I usually just sit at the bar.  Interacting with the chefs; checking out the dishes going out to the tables.

The other night I started looking at the different Sake that were available.  There are basically 5 types of Sake.  Each one requires different brewing methods.

Jumai-Shu is a pure rice wine; no distilled alcohol added.

Honjozo-Shu, at least 30% of rice is polished away; a small amount of distilled alcohol is added.

Ginjo-Shu, at least 40% of rice is polished away; with or without alcohol added.  If the bottle is labeled Ginjo, it means distilled alcohol was added; if labeled Junmai Ginjo it means no alcohol was added.

Daiginjo-Shu, at least 50% of rice is polished away.  Again, with or without added alcohol.  If the bottle is labeled Daiginjo, it means distilled alcohol was added.  If labeled Junmai Daiginjo, it means no alcohol was added.

Namazake is a special 5 designation for unpasteurized sake; incorporates all of the above mentioned.

Saketumi is located at 18814 Coastal Highway (Rt. 1), Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, 19971.  Tel. 302-645-2818.  You can find Saketumi on Facebook.  They open every day of the week for lunch, dinner and drinks.  If the weather is good, they might even have their rooftop available for drinks.  Bento Box specials on Wednesdays.

I go there so much with my husband that they don’t even ask us what we want to drink.  Gluten Free Soy Sauce?  Of course, I don’t even have to ask.

Tanaka San is the Sous Chef.  This man is an artist, carefully assembling each dish.  I sit near his station so that I can watch him.  He always gives us a complimentary treat to wet our appetites.

On Sunday, we stopped by to get a bite to eat.  Usually, I have sashimi.  Lately, I have been hooked on their lettuce wraps.  But, on this particular night, I decided to try 2 appetizers that I have never even seen there.

Edamame Ravioli – Ravioli stuffed with edamame puree in a shallot broth.  So light and so delicious.  Very well seasoned and I really enjoyed them.

Roti is an unleavened bread.  It is served in some of the Caribbean islands and in Indian cuisine.  The next dish was Scallion Roti which were crispy pancakes filled with scallions with a spicy peanut/curry dip on the side, with a slight kick, just enough to get those taste buds dancing.  Loved them, as well.

I had a garden salad…I don’t think you  need an explanation….ginger dressing, the best!!

A dish of sashimi was ordered.  Tanaka’s presentation was so elegant in its simplicity.  So beautiful!!  It tasted as good as it looked.

Sushi Simon, Boyton Beach, Florida, Restaurant, Review, Palm Beach County

I don’t remember how many times I have visited this small and intimate Asian restaurant located in Boyton Beach, Florida.  Sushi Simon was recommended to us by someone that was at another dining table and heard us talking about sushi, a couple of years ago.

The address is 1614 South Federal Highway, Boyton Beach, FL 33435.  Tel. 561-731-1819.  It is in a shopping center on the corner of Woolbright and South Federal Highway.

Sushi Simon definitely has a following.  The restaurant can get crowded.  Back in December I went with my son and sat at the bar.  We had a great dinner.  We talked to Simon and he told us he had worked at Sushi Jo, also in Palm Beach County.  On Monday, Simon was at his usual spot, behind the bar fixing sushi and other delicacies.  His rolls contain plantains, strawberries, macademia nuts.  His Crazy Lucy soup is not just a Miso soup but the inclusion of different types of fish; another twist from the usual.

Just a few diners at that time of the evening.  I must admit that since my husband has to eat gluten free, at times is a little hard to find a gluten free interesting roll.  That was the case on Monday.  The rolls he wanted, he could not eat.  He finally settled on one and to tell you the truth I don’t even remember what it was.  He said it was good, but with not enough enthusiasm.

He also had 2 orders of Escolar, sashimi style.  Escolar is a snake mackerel and is found in deep tropical and temperate waters around the world. Some restaurants call it white tuna.

I, on the other hand, started with Conch, sashimi style.  We also ordered fresh wasabi.  It is so good and a big difference from the wasabi they usually serve you.  Conch is usually a little tough but I did not mind it.  I, actually, expected it.  It was a little boring so I probably would not order it again.

I wish I could remember the rolls I had.  They were so good.  Part of the evening’s special.  Usually I can write the description from the menu but only the names were written and I can’t even remember those.  They were funny names.

If you do not like sushi or sashimi and think you can get something else at Sushi Simon, then, think again because this restaurant does cater to sushi and sashimi aficionados.

If you have to eat gluten free then be flexible and bring your own gluten free soy sauce.

I almost forgot to tell you that the service has been constant; friendly and willing to help with the menu.

Sushi Simon has reviews that go from excellent, to terrible, rolls are too small, or best ever, and the usual too pricey.  It’s personal thing, so check it out and decide for yourselves.

Short and to the point.  Next time I will make sure I get those descriptions before I get too comfortable.

It was another night at the Delaware Beaches, when the inevitable was avoiding the nightly ritual of cooking….

Did you know….that bowing represents humility?  You elevate, honor and respect the other person by lowering yourself.  A bow should always be returned.

And, did you know that the shredded raddish or daikon is there for a reason?  To nibble on between sushi orders.  Use chopsticks to eat it.  Daikon is also served under sashimi or as an edible side dish.

So here was another night hitting Saketumi instead of cooking.  Saketumi is located at 18814 Highway One, Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-645-2818.  Website?  www.saketumirestaurant.com.

As I came in, Kim, who is the Manager, greeted us.  We had not seen each other since before Thanksgiving.  At that time I told him about the Turduckens from Louisina.  Guess what?  Not only did Kim ordered one, but he also deep fried it!!  He said it was awesome.  Another convert ordering from Cajun Grocer.

But, tonight it was all about trying new things.  At times I get into a rut; ordering the same old thing.

Tanaka was behind the bar.  He is the Main Event.  He is such an artist.  His preparations do not leave his side until they are just perfectly arranged.

Then, James was there too.  He was our server.  His suggestions were right on target. 

We decided to start with some Sashimi Tapas:

Kampachi – Amber Jack Fish (yellow tail amberjack).  A carpaccio with yuzu lime dressing.  Yuzu is a citrus fruit from East Asia.  Looks like a very small grapefruit.  It also has a tart flavor.

This was so delicious. Delicately sliced; almost transparent.  The lime dressing adding that citrus taste.

The next one was the Torched Tuna.  Also in a carpaccio style with jalapeno, red tobiko, chive, masago cracker, and spicy ponzu sauce.   My husband was salivating at the looks of this dish, until Kim said that it had gluten.  A sudden long face appeared.  Kim immediately said “it’s not very good”.  We all laughed.  Guess who had the pleasure of eating it?  Moi…and I savoured every single sliced.

The Seared White Tuna Tataki with yuzu citrus vinaigrette, with fried shallot, mango salsa and cilantro was another successful tapa.  This one, my husband could eat and thought it was very good, as well.

These 3 tapas were light and the perfect appetizer.  My favorite was the Kampachi, then the Torched Tuna and then the Seared White Tuna Tataki.

People were coming in and I was getting cold so I ordered a Miso Soup.  James asked me if I wanted the clams, as well.  I had never had it with the clams and I found that including the clams gave it a different dimension to the soup.  I liked it!!

We did not stop there.  An order of their Tropical Thunder had a beautiful presentation and had a fantastic taste.  Mango, salmon, topped with lobster salad and tobiko (fish eggs).

My husband likes to order a crispy eel sushi; the crispier the better….loved it as well.

I can recommend Saketumi with confidence.  I have never been disappointed.  They are friendly, the food is fresh with beautiful colors, appealing to all your senses.  The service, prompt….and I love the sushi bar.  Sitting there lets me converse with the chefs, see the fish and watch their talent.

There was no way I was having any more of my leftovers last night.  I don’t know what I was thinking when I decided to cook everything in the refrigerator in the event the electricity went out.  I guess I thought it would be out for weeks.  My husband said he would not have any more ground beef.  That was it.

So, my mood changed to something lighter; ate way too much during Irene.  I thought Saketumi would be the perfect place for a Monday night.  Due to Irene not a lot of people were at the beach, but that will change soon this week-end.  Saketumi is located at 18814 Highway One, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971 and it has plenty of parking available.  Tel. 302-645-2818.  Website?  www.saketumirestaurant.com.

I have written about this restaurant before.  It is a modern building with plenty of seating choices; even a terrace on top of the building, as well.

My choice?  The sushi bar.  That is where I usually find Tanaka Sam, who is the Sous Chef.  I love seating at the sushi bar because I can interact with all of them.  Tanaka always gives the sushi bar patrons a little taste of what is soon to be a very pleasant dining experience.

If you decided you are not a sushi aficionado and not really into it, then, don’t worry because this very modern Asian restaurant offers a variety of foods; Japanese, Thai and Chinese among others.  They have tempuras, curries, noodles, rice and woks.

One of the dishes I have had in the past is a whole fish with that chili sweet sauce and very crispy.  It’s a good one!!  Don’t let it intimidate you.

Our waiter was Dimitar.  He has served us before and is always attentive, prompt and knows his menu well.

Tanaka and I got the conversation going.  We talked about the weather; his family lives in N.Y.  At times I had to ask him again to repeat what he had just said; then, I laughed because he probably could not understand my accent either. 

His sushi and sashimi presentations are outstanding.  Totally gorgeous and a work of art.

Last night I had their Firecracker Roll.  A little spicy with a nice kick to it.  I also had the scallops, sashimi style and the Unagi, which is eel.

And, let’s not forget real wasabi.  There is a big difference to the wasabi you get at different sushi restaurants.  Unless you ask for real wasabi, if they have it, all you are getting is horseradish, mustard and food coloring.  Very little or no wasabi is found in that paste.  Wasabi is a root which must be finely grated before serving.  It is perishable and it does cost a bit more.

My husband had different choices of sashimi and sushi on his plate.  Guess what?  They do have gluten free/wheat free soy sauce.

Saketumi is available for events, on Sundays they do have a brunch and most every day of the week they have specials and happy hour.

Even though I have written about Saketumi before, I decided to do it again.  They have been consistent from day one.  The staff is friendly, the restaurant is nice and the food is really good!!  My family does visit Saketumi often.  I guess we are regulars, right?

I don’t know what comes to my mind first, the craving for a particular food that takes me to that restaurant to review it, or that I pick a restaurant because it is time to review a restaurant.

I think it is the former.  I don’t give it too much thought.  It is like wanting pizza, or a good juicy hamburger, Indian food, Thai, or, Oh, I feel like having a crepe.  For example, yesterday I was driving and stopped at Eming’s Chicken, which is closer to Bethany Beach, Delaware, but away from the beaches.  Well, I will probably be there Friday because they are having a pig roast starting at 11:00 a.m.  I got that craving.  If I do go, believe me, that will be a post in the making.

I thought about this particular post a few times.  Already you know that I like sushi, and sashimi.  I feel good after I eat it; satisfied but not overly full.

I was having dinner in Delray Beach back in December with Anita and my husband.  We were at Lemongrass, which I have written about a few times, and one of my favorite restaurants in Delray.  Talking and chatting away, interjecting in Spanish with Anita; back to English.  The tables were close to each other so you could really see what other patrons were eating and some times even hear what they were talking about.

Our entrees arrived and out came my camera.  A couple next to us, started a friendly chat.  Of course, I told them what I was doing.  They, actually, ordered my fish, since they saw how gorgeous it looked.  Then, the gentleman proceeded to tell me that I needed to try a sushi restaurant in Boyton Beach called Sushi Simon.  That it had very innovative combinations in their sushi.  That’s all I needed to hear so, yes, we went there the next day and one other time after that.  Here is my personal opinion and review.

Sushi Simon is located at 1614 S. Federal Highway, Boyton Beach, Florida 33435.  The actual location is at the SE corner of Woolbright Rd. and Federal Hwy., right on that shopping center.  Tel. 561-731-1819.  No website but you can find them on Facebook.  Their business hours are Mondays – Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00 – 10:00 p.m.  They also have lunch specials Mondays through Fridays.  Carry out is available, as well.

Boyton Beach is located just north of Delray Beach and South of Palm Beach.  Not far; easy to get to.

When I first entered the restaurant I thought I smelled fish, which usually turns me off, but that dissipated and did not happen again.  The restaurant was small, and not very wide; plenty of tables and a sushi bar, though.  A couple of tables outdoors too.  It was cozy and people were friendly.

Looking through the menu I thought it looked good, even though I do not like imitation crab.  It seemed that it was used a lot in their rolls.  Also, cream cheese was used a lot. 

The rolls I decided to try were:

Little Havana which had eel, avocado, cream cheese, plantains, and mango.  I will tell you that it was delicious and perfect for a South Florida roll.   The plantain and mango combination was great.  Loved it.  That was what the gentleman told me at Lemongrass.  Innovative combinations.

Ichigo Roll was delicious, as well.  It had also eel, masago, avocado, cream cheese, strawberries, and macadamia nuts on top.  I had not had a roll with macadamia nuts.  It was a first and really liked that crunchiness and fruit together with the eel. 

My husband had the Kawaii Maui Roll with coconut shrimp, avocado, cream cheese, pineapple, papaya, with mixed macadamia nuts on top.  He thought it was the best roll he had had in a very long time.  Could not stop talking about it.  We had taken our own gluten free soy sauce.  The restaurant had not had anyone ask for something like that in the past.

Next visit came about because my husband could not stop talking about the Kawaii Maui Roll.  Tommy and Michael came with us and it got a little tricky because Sushi Simon, practically, does not have too much for the person that does not like sushi, or seafood, for that matter.  The only thing he could have was Gyoza which were steamed or deep fried pork and vegetable dumplings.

But, wait, he decided to try the roll my husband was raving about.  I could see it in his face, it was a no go, as he was trying to eat it.  The other ones finished that roll for him.  Happy, yes, they were.

We ordered pretty much the same thing.  I added the Crazy Lucy soup, which was a special soup of the day.  I really liked it.  It was a Miso soup but with different fish added to it.  Tasty.

I again, ordered that Little Havana roll and then tried another roll that was on their special that evening.  I cannot remember its name but it did have the avocado on top.  It was good, but not memorable like Little Havana and Ichigo Roll.

The concensus was that it was good, but for the size of the rolls, it was expensive.  I would go again for that Little Havana Roll and the Ichigo Roll.  My husband will go again for the Kawaii Maui Roll.  I thought his roll was small; a few more pieces were needed.

Having lived at the Delaware Beaches for almost 30 years I have seen a lot of changes but the most have happened in the town of Bethany Beach.  It was definitely a seasonal town with summer starting on Memorial week-end and ending on Labor Day. 

I remember also when once my parents visited from Puerto Rico and we went to get something to eat at a small place and they wanted a beer and they were told that it was a “dry” town.  What?  My mother could not believe it.  Where have you moved to, she asked? 

But as they visited more often and as the town progressed, with more buildings and restaurants and amenities they could see that it was the perfect place to raise a family.  They, actually, loved coming to Bethany.

Bethany still surprises me every time that I visit.  During the summer it is packed.  Twice I could not find parking this past summer.  The beautification of the town is fantastic.  The additions of new restaurants offering fare for everyone’s taste let visitors and residents stay in town instead of driving up and down Ocean Highway (Rt. 1).

One of the newer additions to the town is Misaki, located at the York Beach Mall in South Bethany Beach.  Tel. 302-539-0500.  It offers Asian Cuisine, including sushi and sashimi.

The trend in sushi restaurants, some with very innovative cuisines, has sprung from coast to coast.

During past visits to California the sushi and sashimi have been presented in such a way that you cannot help but fall in love with it.

I love the traditional rolls even though I usually order sashimi.  I get excited when splashes of color are added to new dishes; mango and figs being examples of those.

I also remember the little sushi restaurant that started many years ago in Fenwick Island, Delaware, just south of Bethany Beach.  All of us, residents and locals fell in love with it.  From then on sushi restaurants in the Maryland and Delaware beaches have not looked back.

Last night is was raining and I decided that a trip to Misaki would be the thing to do, besides the fact that they had good specials.  I had not visited this restaurant because, here in Rehoboth Beach, we have 2 great restaurants offering Asian Cuisine; The Cultured Pearl and Saketumi.  I am partial to them; both different in a lot of ways and excellent.  I wanted to see how Misaki would measure to the restaurants in Rehoboth.

Passing through Bethany Beach and entering South Bethany, right at the last light, on the right hand side, is the York Beach Mall and Misaki is located on that strip mall.

It is a small restaurant but can accommodate enough people comfortably.  It had a good sushi bar, and usually that is where I would sit but since there were 3 of us, a booth was most appropriate for casual conversation.

The service was excellent, attentive and not intrusive.  He presented the specials and let us catch up and relax.

Shelley does not eat sushi so she decided on the chicken teriyaki, which she had tried before and really liked it.  She was not disappointed this time either.

I had the chef sashimi.  I also ordered, the aji mackerel which was suggested.  It is also called horse mackerel and the fish had both delicate and robust flavors.

I had the Miso soup which they make every day.  My favorite is the one at The Cultured Pearl.  I have tried it every where I go and that one is still the one.

I think Misaki can hold its own to the Rehoboth Beach restaurants.  It is great to be able to have so many choices.  People have received this restaurant with opened arms; it was packed last night.

I have mentioned before that I practically go to the grocery store every day.  Regarding dinner, I never know what will strike my mood as that favorite time of the day approaches.

Some times I like to cook but in order to write a post to the blog I need to go out and have someone else cook for me.

Such was the case last night.  My mood?  Sashimi.  That’s what I eat when I go to a Sushi restaurant.  You know, sashimi is usually the first course in a formal Japanese meal.  The reason is that it is considered the finest dish; it should be eaten before other strong flavors affect the palate.

I went last night to Saketumi.  It is my favorite at the beach for sushi or sashimi.  It is located at 18814 Highway One, (Rt1 or Ocean Highway), Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. 302-645-2818.  Website www.saketumirestaurant.com.

Saketumi is a modern restaurant specializing in Asian cuisine.  They have take out, catering, Japanese, Thai, and Chinese.  They serve lunch, dinner and brunch on Sundays.

Saketumi has plenty of parking available.  And, if you are visiting or are a resident you know how important that is at this time of the year.

I like to sit at the Sushi Bar.  I get to see what is going on and interact with the Sous Chef.  At Saketumi, this would be Tanaka San.  He is an artist when it comes to presenting the food.  Just gorgeous.  You hate to disturb the plate.

Tanaka  has always presented me with an appetizer.  I have asked him so many times what it is that I am eating,  but to tell you the truth I cannot understand what he says to me, so, I just eat and enjoy it.  The fish is in a vinegar sauce with a little bit of onion and I love it; I really do not know what it is, though.

The Tuna Tuna Surprise or TTS was so colorful.  It had inside-blackened tuna, asparagus, sweet goma sauce and wasabi aioli.  Outside-akami tuna, tobiko, chive.

The Dynamite was also beautiful.  It was a baked California roll, with spicy mayo, scallop, fresh crabmeat and masago on top.

A version of the Dynamite was ordered.  To make it gluten free no masago was put on top.  Extra tobiko on top.  Tobiko is flying fish roe.  Very good.

My dish was called Pine Sashimi.  Strictly Sashimi for me.  It had tuna, yellowtail, salmon, sawara, albacore, kampachi, madai, izumidai, hirame and botan ebi.  Got it?  It was to die for.  The presentation?  A work of art.

The albacore (tuna) was white.  I had never had it.  It was meatier, soft and buttery; melting in your mouth.

What else can I say?  I have gone so many times to Saketumi and I can honestly tell you that my service at the sushi bar and the food have been excellent.
