What’s Going On? Rehoboth Beach, Activities, Events, Entertainment, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware…Visit & Stay Awhile!!

dscn7273

I could tell that it was August because Staples was packed…this is their Christmas when everyone is ready to go back to school.  Rehoboth Beach is open year-round and even though the summer of 2013 might be coming to an end, this town is just getting started.  There is still time to think about all the festivals and the comings and goings of this coastal town….stay tuned for that.

In the meantime…..What’s Going On?

Friday, 8/9 – Clear Space Theatre Company is inviting you to join them on Friday, 8/9, for 2 FREE matinee performances at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.  WICKED will be presented by the talented students in their Musical Theatre Summer Intensive Program.  Location? 20 Baltimore Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227-2270.  Website?  http://www.clearspacetheatre.org.

Until 2014 – If you love Rehoboth Beach, you should stop by and visit the Rehoboth Beach Museum.  It is an easy museum to navigate and you will still have plenty of time to hit the beach, shops, and restaurants.  You can learn how Rehoboth Beach was then and how it has developed during these years.  The present exhibit is “Beach Eats”.  Rehoboth Beach is a dining destination, as well, and the exhibit celebrates over 100 years of eating in Rehoboth Beach, from the grub to the fine dining.  For more information please visit http://www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.

dscn4552

Saturday, 8/10, Sunday, 8/11, and Saturday, 8/17, and Sunday, 8/18 – The 40th Annual Outdoor Fine Art & Fine Crafts Show…Two week-ends!!  Location?  Rehoboth Art League, 12 Doods Lane in Henlopen Acres.  Saturday, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.   Admission ? $5.00 Tel. 302-227-8404.  This show is a much awaited event every year in Rehoboth Beach.  And, this is a very special year as the Rehoboth Art League celebrates its 75th anniversary.  There will be plenty of activities, entertainment and food.  For more info., please visit http://www.rehobothartleague.org/events/40th-annual-members-outdoor-art-show.html.

dscn7280

If you have been coming to the beach, you know that August is so busy….and parking can be a hair raising experience.  So, for the 40th Annual Outdoor Fine Art & Fine Crafts Show this is what you should do:

dscn7246

Since the parking in Henlopen Acres is very limited, the Art League is suggesting you use the Jolly Trolley.  Two convenient locations:  Park your car at either the Kmart on Rt. 1 or at the Rehoboth Beach ElementarySchool at 500 Stockley Avenue.  The shuttle will begin running at 9:45 a.m. and will be making continuous loops to the Outdoor Show.  I have used it and recommend it.

dscn7235

If you decide to venture and park in Henlopen Acres, please be considerate of the residents.  Adhere to parking restrictions, including no parking on the street. Unless there is a “No Parking” sign, all vehicles must park on the grass with tires off the pavement.  Yes, you heard me right and I write this too from experience.

dscn7279

For the 2 week-ends of the show, Henlopen Acres’ Dodd’s Lane, beginning at the instersection of Rolling Rd. and Tidewaters, from Dodd’s Lane to Zwaanendael, will be  temporarily one way street.  Visitors will be entering Henlopen Acres by making a left off of Columbia Avenue and exiting Henlopen Acres across from Rehoboth Beach’s Surf Avenue.

dscn7251

Saturday, 8/10 –  Opening Reception for artist Michael Krausz from 6 – 9 p.m.  A benefit for AIDS DE, 6 p.m. until 8:45 p.m.  It is the 5th Annual Silent Art Auction at Gallery 50, located at 50B Wilmington Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227-2050.  Website?  http://www.50contemporaryart.com.

Have a great week-end!!

From the Rehoboth Beach Film Society:

The moment the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival ends…the works starts all over again. The 2013 Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival will take place November 6th through the 13th.  I was so happy to see that Damon Pla has been chosen once again as the winning artist to portrait the theme of this year’s festival.  His acyrlic on canvas titled “Old Man and The Must See” is the selection for the 16th anniversary of the Rehoboth Beach Film Festival.  Posters, programs, ads, t-shirts, and other materials will be released in July.  In 2011 Damon Pla’s work was also selected.  When asked what his inspiration was for this year’s piece, he replied “Old Man and The Must See” is based around the fascination of a combination of machines working together to serve one purpose, accentuating a journey, not a destination.  In this case, emphasizing the work of the camera, not the subject being filmed.

dscn0805

Damon Pla is from South Florida….He is a self made painter.  He offers original paintings, limited editions, commissions and trompe l’oeil/murals.  Happy he has made his home, here, in Southern Delaware.  Want to learn more?  Please visit http://www.damonpla.com.  Tel. 302-541-6057.  Find him on Facebook, and Twitter.

FILM ENTHUSIASTS:  Enjoy a unique opportunity to screen film submissions for this year’s Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival.  The screenings will be taking place at the Movies at Midway on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach and at the South Coastal Public Library in Bethany Beach.  The film screenings will begin at 7 p.m.  Admission? $2 at Movies at Midway, but free at the library in Bethany.  Tel. 302-645-9095.  Please visit http://www.rehobothfilm.com.

The Beach Eats – Exhibit at the Rehoboth Beach Museum – A celebration of eating in Rehoboth Beach.  The museum is located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue by the roundabout and Rehoboth Beach Chamber of Commerce.  It is a fun exhibit.  I wrote a post on May 23, 2013 so if you want to take a peek just click on the month of May, 2013 and scroll down to the date.  The iconic restaurants in Rehoboth Beach paved the way for the present restaurants.  Remember Sydney’s?  Sydney mentioned to me that having the restaurant at that time was “A Moment in Time”.  It certainly was.  So much fun and great food accompanied by amazing music.  Check it out…it is worth it.  More info?  Please visit http://www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.

dscn0949

Doggies at The Beach is a 3,500 square foot indoor-cage free facility…my dog’s, Addy’s, favorite.  She feels like she is at home.  Can’t say enough about them.  Jim and his staff are true dog lovers.  Web cams, grooming, 24 hour supervision, training.

The Beach Eats! Exhibit, Rehoboth Beach Museum, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, The Nation’s Summer Capital, Grand Opening, Saturday, May 25th, Celebrating eating in Rehoboth Beach, Fun to Fine Dining!, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware, Enjoy Yourselves!!

dscn3642

Hey, Keith (The Back Porch) what happened with your 50 cent coffee?  OMG look at the Camel’s Hump…do you remember when it was just a hole in the wall on Rehoboth Avenue and Marcia was all over the place? Not too quiet either….That’s what you want from an exhibit that evokes fun memories.  That’s the whole purpose; to engage the public in conversation and friendly chit chat.

dscn3554

The Beach Eats! The exhibit celebrates eating in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, for over 100 years.  Fun to fine dining!  The opening day will be Saturday, May 25th.  It will share the tradition and history of the splendid yet long gone wooden hotels of the 1900s and bring to light the evolution of restaurants serving residents and visitors alike.

Dr. John's on 52 Baltimore Avenue

Dr. John's on 52 Baltimore Avenue

The museum is located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue, by the Rehoboth Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Visitor’s Center.  This Museum is in the former icehouse, where ice was cut from local lakes and stored in a wooden structure insulated with sawdust during the late 1800s, and early 1900s.

dscn3650

A few of us had the opportunity to preview the exhibit as Nancy and Barbara were working non stop for Saturday’s opening.

This iconic group of restauranteurs paved the path for what Rehoboth has become…a dining destination.  Most are past owners and one is still, presently, at it.

If you have visited Rehoboth Beach for years you know that it is known for its fine dining establishments.  And, some of us are always drawn by the perennial favorites such as French fries, pizza, cotton candy and caramel popcorn.  The Beach Eats will evoke those memories and it will be a must to visit this summer season in Rehoboth Beach.

dscn3648

Many of the residents and restaurant owners have been rummaging through their memory trunks, bringing out some really neat things.  Gus & Gus has loaned their famous sign to the Exhibit.

Remember The Canyon?  It is now Lily Thai.

dscn3609

A favorite of many was Chez La Mer.

I loved the Garden Gourmet….I had my youngest son’s Christening there.

Pizza….Nicola!!

Irish Eyes….a favorite for so many years in Rehoboth Beach.

dscn3600

The Summer House.  Always crowded and plenty of partying and dining.

dscn3559

The Blue Moon, another favorite restaurant in Rehoboth Beach, then and now.

dscn3584

Sydney’s was one of the first restaurants to bring some food with real taste and spice….Louisiana cooking was always on the menu….and Blues as in “you never leave Sydney’s without singing the Blues”.  So much fun.  Sydney was and still is a food and music icon in Rehoboth Beach.

dscn3636

The Camel’s Hump…was last located at 21 Baltimore Avenue, but just like I mentioned above, it was a hole in the wall on Rehoboth Avenue…and so much fun too.  It had the “hottest” hot sauce.  People used to have “dare if you eat a spoonful” contests….no way.

dscn3643

The Back Porch is one of the most visited restaurants in Rehoboth Beach….still at it and still just as popular!

dscn3563

dscn3575dscn3596

It will be a fun exhibit to visit.  Programs related to the exhibit are planned, including a forum of restaurant owners talking about their restaurants on September 26th at the Rehoboth Beach Public Library, and a presentation on favorite Delaware eats.

Please stay in touch with the Museum by visiting http://www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.  You may also call 302-227-7310.  The Museum will be open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.  It is located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware!!

Someone told me that in Lewes, Delaware, they say that Lewes has history…but Rehoboth Beach, just has a past!!

If you love coming to Rehoboth Beach….then, learn a little bit about it in a very fun and casual way.  This popular coastal town has come so far.  At times you have to visit the past to see how the future has developed.  I always say that a visit to the Rehoboth Beach Museum is a must.  It is such a doable museum.  It is also the home of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society.  The museum is in the old “ice house”.  Location?  511 Rehoboth Avenue.  The hours are Monday, Thursday, Friday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.  Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.  Until Memorial Week-End the museum is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesday.  Website?  http://www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.  Tel. 302-227-7310.  Regular admission is $5 for adults; $3 for seniors, college students and military; $2 for children ages 13-17.  Members and children 12 and under are free.

The following are the events that will be held this week:

REHOBOTH BEACH MUSEUM AND JOLLY TROLLEY LOCAL HISTORY TOURS BEGIN – Last Fall I had the opportunity to go along on the history tour.  It was so much fun.  The Jolly Trolley is an institution in Rehoboth Beach/Dewey Beach.  It originated in 1970 and it celebrates the sights, smells, colors and characteristics of the resort area.  You might have seen the Jolly Trolley carrying passengers to and from Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach.  It is the best way to get around during the summer season.

Sea_Witch_Magical_History_Tour

The Jolly Trolley began when a group of locals wanted to have a means of transportation that would let visitors get a feel for the area.  The rest is history!

The Jolly Trolley is also a year-round charter service.  Just in case you need them, the website is http://www.jollytrolley.com.  Tel. 302-227-1197, 302-249-1605.  The tour bus is probably going to be the enclosed one.  Better for everyone to hear the driver and the tour guide.

The first tour of the season will be starting on Thursday, May 16th, at 9 a.m.  It will last about 40 minutes.  Other tour dates are June 13th, August 15th, September 19th, and October 25th.  The Trolley tour will start and end at the Anna Hazzard Museum at 17 Christian Street in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  The cost of the tour is $10, which includes entrance fee for the Anna Hazzard House and the Rehoboth Beach Museum.  Reservations are required.  You may call the museum at 302-227-7310.

The Anna Hazzard House was one of the original “tent” buildings, dating to the 1870’s.  It reflects the early history of Rehoboth Beach.

During the tour, visitors will experience first hand pieces of the history of Rehoboth Beach, such as the birth of the town as a Methodist Camp Meeting site and its growth as a resort town.  Learn about shipwrecks, submarines, storms and sand dunes.  Totally recommend it.

REHOBOTH BEACH MUSEUM ASKS “WHAT’S IN YOUR ATTIC?” – The Museum offers the chance to search those boxes in your attic for Rehoboth Beach memorabilia.  On Thursday, May 16th, at 7:00 p.m. bring your something special to the Museum to share with others.  Keepsakes from the Rehoboth Beach area only are welcome.

Dolle's Candy Box from the 1930's.

Dolle's Candy Box from the 1930's.

Reservations are required for this event.  This program is free for members and included in the cost of admission for the general public.  Please call the museum for reservations and information at 302-227-7310.

Tables will be available to display the treasures.  This event will be a great opportunity to explore others’ little pieces of history and to share stories.

MUSEUM KICKS OFF SUMMER SEASON – Area residents are invited to join members of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society as the Society kicks off the summer season with a canal-side party at the Rehoboth Beach Museum.  It will be held on Saturday, May 18th at the museum from 4 until 6 p.m.  Guests will enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres, take a chance on winning raffle prizes, purchase plants for sale to fill in that last empty spot in a garden and enjoy the quiet before the start of another busy season.  The Society will also present the Hall of Fame award to Paul Preston Davis.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, The Nation’s Summer Capital, Warm Weather, Blue Skies, A Taste of Summer!

A Taste of Summer!!  You can just tell Rehoboth Beach is ready; excitement is in the air.  My parking Angel came on handy as I found parking just by the Bandstand on Rehoboth Avenue, overlooking Thrasher’s, Kohr Bros, and Dolle’s!!

dscn3130

Then, another telltale that summer is upon us is The Jolly Trolley….a great way to get around.  It was parked right by the Bandstand, waiting for customers.  The Jolly Trolley celebrates and shares the sights, smells, colors and characteristics of the Rehoboth Beach/Dewey Beach Resort areas.  Friday, 5/10, until 2 a.m.  Saturday, 5/11,  10 a.m. until 2 a.m.  Memorial Day, The Jolly Trolley will be servicing the area every day from 8 a.m. until 2 a.m. $2.50 one way.  Children under 5 years of age pay $1.  For more info., please visit http://www.jolllytrolley.com.

I spotted a kid coming out with a freshly made funnel cake!!  He showed it to me and this really screamed summer!

dscn3131

Then I asked the friends from Smyrna, Delaware if I could take their picture with their summer favorite.  From Kohr Bros!!  One just showed me the cone; the other one was not shy.

Then, I turned around because it smelled so good…Thrasher’s French Fries!!  Perfectly cooked, crispy….hopefully, she showered them with vinegar.

dscn3142

The Boardwalk Grub…it’s what you will remember.  Rehoboth Beach has wonderful restaurants.  They are really good!  But, there is something about hitting those summer favorites, right by the water!!  Priceless!

Which reminds me that the Rehoboth Museum, located on Rehoboth Avenue by the Visitor’s Center, is opening an exhibit called “Beach Eats” on Memorial Day.  It will feature memorabilia from establishments both old and new that have served generations of locals and beach-goers for years.  According to the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and Museum Director, Nancy Alexander, the eateries in the resort city bring back many happy times and stories that go along with them.

dscn3134

If you happen to have memorabilia from local restaurants that you’d like to share for the exhibit, please call her at 302-227-7310.  Visit http://www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.

It was great to see the Boardwalk crowded.  And, the ones sitting by the beach were enjoying one awesome day!

dscn3133

Playland is already opend on the south side of the Boardwalk.

dscn3135

The Beach Arcade on the north side of the Boardwalk has also opened.

dscn3138

Summer tends to have an effect on people.  It is that laissez faire attitude, when we let things take their own course….so when you leave it all behind this summer to come to Southern Delaware, remember….
