Shops, restaurants, hotels, B & B’s, theatre, entertainment, galleries….The Boardwalk…the beach.  Just a stroll away; shop local, stay awhile.  Rehoboth Beach has outdone itself bringing something every week to the town.  Something worth driving to.  From the tri-state area it is so easy to get to Rehoboth Beach.  It was not so many years ago.  In 1878 the railroad was extended to this coastal town bringing more visitors and businesses.  The population in Rehoboth has grown so much. And, the Second Season is gorgeous at the beach.

dscn0089

There is something magical about Sundays….The beaches get quiet at the end of the day.  Just a few playing here or there.

All movies have a hero; the main character, and, an enemy….You can assist the Rehoboth Film Society with the film selection process for the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival, which will be taking place on November 5th through November 9th.  You can become a film critic, by attending the Festival Film Review sessions which are open to the public.

rating_a_film

Each session will include the screening of a documentary or a feature and a short, time permitting.  Reviewers are asked to complete a rating form and may also join the post film discussion.

Festival Program Director, Joe Bilancio, will facilitate the reviews so you will be sure to enjoy stimulating discussions about what factors determine a film’s suitability for a Festival.

Please remember that screener copies of films are provided as courtesy to the Film Society for the specific purpose of reviewing for consideration as a festival entry.  These copies may be of lesser technical quality and are not designed to be projected on the big screen.  Despite these circumstances, review sessions provide a unique opportunity for film enthusiasts to see a broad scope of films from emerging directors.

Festival Film Reviews will take place June 23, and 30, July 7, 28 and August 4 at the South Coastal Library located at 43 Kent Avenue in Bethany Beach.

Festival Film Reviews will take place June 24, July 1, 8, 29, and August 5 in the upstairs screening room at the Movies at Midway in Rehoboth Beach.

Film screenings will begin at 7:00 p.m.  Admission is $2 for Rehoboth Beach Film Society members and $4 for future members at Rehoboth.  The screenings in the Bethany location will be free.

The mission of the RBFS is promoting cinematic arts and providing education and cultural enrichment for our community.  The Film Society sponsors monthly screenings, special events, and the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival.

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is funded, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

Touch of The Light, Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, Saturday, 11/9, 10 a.m. until Noon

dscn6351

Thanks to my friend Debbie who got us tickets to see an uplifting story of dreams, determination, love and believing in yourself.  Over the years I have seen plenty of movies at the film festival.  I must admit that some have been better than others.  Touch of The Light was excellent.

The Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival is going strong….no parking at the theaters.  Get there early.

dscn6368

Touch of The Light is based on the true story of Huang Yu-Siang who was a Taiwanese piano prodigy.  His gift was discovered when he was only 2 years old.  He could play songs on the piano that he had only heard once.  He became the first blind person in Taiwan to obtain a bachelor’s degree in music, majoring in piano.

The story relates to anyone has had to overcome obstacles in life in order to keep going forward to his or her dreams. It was Taiwan’s Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film.

Siang family was supportive.  At times his mother felt cold but she truly loved him and was so proud.

He leaves his family to attend the university….more obstacles because of his blindness.  His roommate was a riot.  Meeting Jie, a pretty but frustrated cold drinks vendor who dreams of being a dancer…she witnesses his fearless determination and understands his optimism and inner peace.  She is inspired by him to hold on to her dream.

Touch of The Light will be showing again on Saturday, 11/9 at 10 a.m. until Noon.  It is in Mandarin with English subtitles.  Worth seeing.

Then stop by the tent where people are chatting, eating, reviewing what they have just seen….

Have fun!!

Destination? Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival, Delaware, Mid-Atlantic Cultural Event, Films, Features, Documentaries, Shorts, Wednesday, 10/6 – Sunday, 10/10, Southern Delaware, Sussex County

dscn6351

The first film festival was held in Venice in 1932, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was the first film to be screened at the festival.  How about that little trivia?  Since then, film festivals have been established throughout the world.  Some of them better than others.

When the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film launched in 1998 it was done after a year of discussing the possibility of showing independent films in local restaurants.  Since then it has become a respected Mid-Atlantic event.  It is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization, as well.  Film buffs come from the Mid-Atlantic area to enjoy features, documentaries, and shorts.

For complete info., please visit http://www.rehobothfilm.com.

There is a process regarding buying tickets.  To avoid standing in long lines, numbers will be distributed starting at noon outside the Big Tent.  Check http://www.rehobothfilm.com/festival_ticket_sales_policy.html

dscn6359

The Film Festival Box Office in the Big Tent will open for Associate Producer ticket sales at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, 11/6.  This tent serves many purposes.  Besides buying tickets and film souvenirs, it is also a gathering place.  Food and entertainment happens under the tent.

At 3 p.m. on Wednesday, 11/6, Student and Film Buff members may buy tickets for Wednesday films.  Numbers will be distributed starting at 2:30 p.m. inside the Big Tent.  Look for the “Get a Number” sign near the Box Office.

The Box Office opens to the public on Wednesday, 11/6 at 4 p.m.  The line length will let them know if they need to issue numbers.

Have a great time!!

NOTE:  Saturday, 11/9 at 12:55 p.m., The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation are proud to present the Metropolitan Opera’s live broadcast of Puccini’s tragic tale “Tosca” at the Cape Henlopen High School’s theater.  This new and exciting production is the third opera in The Metropolitan Opera: Live HD series of live simulcast transmissions for the 2013-14 season.

Puccini’s sweeping, dramatic tale of murder, lust, and political intrigue is beautifully displayed by an exceptional cast.  Soprano, Patricia Racette who performed a solo concert in Rehoboth Beach last year will play the title role of the jealous diva, Floria Tosca.  It runs 3 hours, 35 minutes, sung in Italian with subtitles in English.

Addmission is $22 for a Met member, $25 for adult, $22 for Senior (65+), $15 for Student with ID, $15 for child (12 and under).  Seating is on a first come, first serve basis.  The doors will open at 12:30 p.m.  There will be 2 intermission breaks during the live broadcast.

From the Rehoboth Beach Film Society:

The moment the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival ends…the works starts all over again. The 2013 Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival will take place November 6th through the 13th.  I was so happy to see that Damon Pla has been chosen once again as the winning artist to portrait the theme of this year’s festival.  His acyrlic on canvas titled “Old Man and The Must See” is the selection for the 16th anniversary of the Rehoboth Beach Film Festival.  Posters, programs, ads, t-shirts, and other materials will be released in July.  In 2011 Damon Pla’s work was also selected.  When asked what his inspiration was for this year’s piece, he replied “Old Man and The Must See” is based around the fascination of a combination of machines working together to serve one purpose, accentuating a journey, not a destination.  In this case, emphasizing the work of the camera, not the subject being filmed.

dscn0805

Damon Pla is from South Florida….He is a self made painter.  He offers original paintings, limited editions, commissions and trompe l’oeil/murals.  Happy he has made his home, here, in Southern Delaware.  Want to learn more?  Please visit http://www.damonpla.com.  Tel. 302-541-6057.  Find him on Facebook, and Twitter.

The Beach Eats – Exhibit at the Rehoboth Beach Museum – A celebration of eating in Rehoboth Beach.  The museum is located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue by the roundabout and Rehoboth Beach Chamber of Commerce.  It is a fun exhibit.  I wrote a post on May 23, 2013 so if you want to take a peek just click on the month of May, 2013 and scroll down to the date.  The iconic restaurants in Rehoboth Beach paved the way for the present restaurants.  Remember Sydney’s?  Sydney mentioned to me that having the restaurant at that time was “A Moment in Time”.  It certainly was.  So much fun and great food accompanied by amazing music.  Check it out…it is worth it.  More info?  Please visit http://www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.

dscn0949

Doggies at The Beach is a 3,500 square foot indoor-cage free facility…my dog’s, Addy’s, favorite.  She feels like she is at home.  Can’t say enough about them.  Jim and his staff are true dog lovers.  Web cams, grooming, 24 hour supervision, training.

SoDel Film Co. Wraps Short Movie, Executive Producer, Matt Haley, Script and Lead Actor, Paul Webster, Shot totally on location, Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Ocean City, Maryland

Not only are the Delaware Beaches vacation, shopping, and dining destinations; they are also coming into their own as major contributors to the arts and entertainment.  Southern Delaware is the perfect spot for photographers and for filmmaking.

The other day I was at a stop light and I pulled out my cell phone to text.  My husband said “You know, Matt is producing a film about accidents and texting”.  Put it away immediately.

Did not have to wait to long to find out that Matt Haley’s SoDel Film Co., just finished wrapping up a short movie, tentatively, at the moment, called “Skittles”.

SoDel Film Co. is a production company launched by restaurant owner, Matt Haley.  This latest short film is due to be released this fall.

“Skittles” was shot entirely at Southern Delaware’s locations and landmarks in 6 days:  The Lewes Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Rehoboth Toy & Kite Company, The Sea Air Village Mobile Home Park, The Rehoboth Beach Bandstand, and the Jail at the Ocean City Police Dept. in Ocean City, Maryland.

DSC03006

The film tells the fictional story of a man who has been jailed for killing a child while texting and driving.  “The theme is something that’s hitting home every day, everywhere”, states Executive Producer, Matt Haley.  “It is a community minded issue that we hope will raise awareness…”We want to make films that are based in reality and bring about bigger issues-locally and globally.”

DSC03000 (1)DSC03172

With small acting roles on hit shows like “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, “Scrubs”, “NCIS”, and “24”, Lead Actor, Paul Webster, a 3-year resident of Rehoboth Beach, wrote the script of the short film.  He describes the choice of location as “a beautiful area”.  “There’s such a mix of farmland and a full spectrum of income and houses”, he explains.  “I just couldn’t believe more things weren’t shot here.  It’s a beautiful place to shoot, and you have the seasons, as well.”

Other films produced by Matt Haley and SoDel Film Co. include:

dscn1042dscn1044

“Hands of Harvest”, a chronicle of the struggles and fortitude of the migrant Mexican women who fuel the crabbing industry on the Eastern Shore.  This documentary was picked up by the PBS network.

And, the soon to be released “Motorcycle Chang pa”, which explores the travels and survival of the nomadic Chang pa tribe through the high altitude deserts of the Himalayas.

Haley says he feels “happy and privileged” to make a film in Delaware.  “We are proud to be part of the Southern Delaware community and the State of Delaware”, he explains.  “We’d like to bring about more of an interest in film-there are other filmmakers that we look up to in the state that are doing great work.  We hope to expand the creative scene or platform of expression throughout the state.”

Matt Haley, Executive Producer, Restauranteur, Philanthropist

Matt Haley, Executive Producer, Restauranteur, Philanthropist

According to Matt Haley, the film will be completed over the summer, with plans for a fall premier and a submittal to the Rehoboth Independent Film Festival, among others.

SoDel Film Co. aims to produce one to 2 films a year, Matt says, with plans to establish a film festival of their own that would include a scholarship program for local aspiring filmmakers 18 years of age and under.

If you would like to know more…..please visit http://www.matthaleycompanies.com.

Talk to you later.
