Scent aficionados? I think I am one of them. I have to thank my sister in law, Susie, because for Christmas she gave me a gift certificate to Penny Lane Perfumes. I wear a fragrance every single day. I love it. I also like clean scents.
Niche perfumes are those that are not mass produced. You will not find them in large department stores. And, you will also not smell like everyone else. The fragrances are unique; they will last a long time.
Penny Lane Perfumes will be at the Penny Lane location, 42 Rehoboth Avenue, until Thursday, the 28th. Fragrances are a luxury and an indulgence. They are also expensive. So, when I heard Penny Lane was awarding savings until they close the location, I went to cash in my gift certificate.
Both, John and Cassandra were there. There was no rush. I proceeded to try and ask questions. This is what I chose.
From Serge Lutens…Nuuit de Cellophane. Osmanthus? The flower is white or tinged with orange. The scent of jasmine laced with mandarin orange. It was clean and fresh. Love it!!
From James Heeley…Ophelia. It is described as too pretty for words. It exudes sensual femeninity and an eternal youth. Jasmine, ylang ylang, and tuberose. Fresh green, aquatic notes combined with orange flowers. Very fresh!!
At times I like to layer the fragrances, but most of the time I just use a particular one each day, depending on my mood.
John fixed me that beautiful bag…inside? Surprise…samples to try!!
One thing I learned the other day, while talking to John and Cassandra, was that we have that understanding that we should wear “heavier” perfumes during the winter, when in reality they should be worn in the summer, when heat makes the scents evaporate quickly.

This indulgence is, definitely, worth it. Scents, at times they define who you are. Some just like soap and water. They say they don’t need anything else. Others, like me, love the idea of light and green scents. I wear perfume every single day.
I really don’t want the same scent as everyone else. This is where this perfume store comes in. Niche perfumes are not mass produced. You will not find them in department stores. That should get your interest. These designers have control.

A visit to Penny Lane was on Thanksgiving week-end. It was the perfect time. Right before Black Friday on a beautiful day in Rehoboth Beach. When my sister in law and I arrived at the store, Cassandra was minding the shop. She is great. Cassandra will take care of you like you are the only person there. Trying perfumes, suggesting scents. She is very knowledgeable.
New to Penny Lane Perfumes is online shopping. Just go on the above mentioned website and experience how easy it is to shop. Need more information, please call them up. The experience of testing the perfumes is to me a relaxing one. On this visit I bought 2 perfumes. Let me tell you about them.
The first one I chose was Entre Naranjos by Spanish perfume designer, Ramon Monegal. Entre Naranjos means “Between Oranges”. I love the freshness of this perfume. It is made in Barcelona, Spain. I am wearing it as I type this post. All you need is just a bit. The scents stay all day. The next perfume I chose was St. Clement’s “Oranges & Lemons Say The Bells of St. Clement’s”. The perfume designer? James Heeley. He is an Englishman, but works and lives in France. It is another of those citrus scents that are so light and refreshing. His perfumes are to be worn by men and women. Fragrances, colognes, perfumes…they are an “essential element to any wardrobe”. But, as I write this post I know that some women and men don’t wear colognes, at all, for a variety of reasons, including job related reasons. I have a friend that doesn’t wear perfume because “I am allergic to bees”. Okay… Next, another friend just only wears perfume once in a blue moon. Then, I have the ones that stick just to one cologne and that’s it; a signature.
This past Monday, remember, when it was pouring and lightning and water spouts going through Dewey?…..well, Susan and I were inside a perfume shop that I had heard about the year before. We did not have a care in the world and proceeded to make ourselves at home.

The owner is Cindy Carey. She was not there on Monday, but Cassandra Parker was. My friend, Susan, actually, knows both of them. Introductions were made. Cassandra proceeded to tell us more about their products.
Originally, I thought they customize fragrances to suit your style. But, no, that’s not it. Niche Perfumery is an alternative to mass perfume production. Niche houses are showing up everywhere. I think it is because we are all so tired of being, as Susan said, geared to brand names. Niche houses tend to have their own perfumer in charge of the fragrances of the house, just like it was was in years past.
I wear perfume every single day. No kidding. I love it. I usually tend to buy frangrances that are green, sporty, and light.
This post is written with gentlemen in mind, as well. Penny Lane Perfumes has beautiful perfumes for men, also. Men can go through the same process as women. Just like Susan and I did. Test, test, and more testing. Don’t be shy, Cassandra is an expert.
Casandra helped us discover a “world of liquid emotion”. While I would say no to one fragrance, Susan would love it.
There are over 200 fragrances in the store; exotic flowers, spices and rare woods. You can wear them by themselves or combine them with other fragrances for a real customized scent. That was the best part, just trying to achieve that scent.
We tried so many of them. We also had the coffee beans on hand to neutralized odors, as well.
Niche Perfumery is sold only by distributors and approved retailers.
I fell in love with one called Premier Figuier Extreme from L’Artisan Parfumeur from Paris. It was light and delicious. That’s how I would describe it.
Then, went a little outside the box with one from Paris, as well, called Montale; Roses Musk. Also light.
Susan, on the other hand picked Opus with a very earthy scent.
These perfumes are meant to last a long time. Just spray in the morning and you are good to go for the whole day. Trying them on is a must, because they really adjust to your own body.
When trying fragrances, spray, but do not rub.

Leaving, knowing that we would, definitely, come back…Susan and I wanted the same thing, an uncommon, personal fragrance. I think we got it!!
