“Because there’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away.”  sarah kay

Southern Delaware is lined up with beaches.  Up and down the different towns you can pick and choose which beach to park yourselves.  Just simple pleasures to be able to spend a day at the beach.  Each beach has its own personality.

Today was a gorgeous day in Rehoboth Beach.  Once again even though we are in the Second Season, the week-ends bring the visitors and it looks like we are back on the summer schedule.

My choide of beach was Whiskey Beach located at the Cape Henlopen State Park on the north side of Rehoboth Beach….also called North Shores.  The entry fee is $5 for in-state vehicles or $10 for out of state.  If you purchased your parking pass then by all means go right through.

In the 1920s, during Prohibition, this beach was a rendevous for rumrunners.  Also it had been a place for soldiers to party while stationed at Ft. Miles up the road with no one to bother them.

I love being near the WWII Towers.  They stand guard, as they have always done.  These two are on Whiskey Beach but there are six others around the area.  These towers were used as artillery spotting locations.

As you can see, you may bring vehicles (with permit) and park right on the beach.  Perfect if you want to go surf-fishing.

Today they dolphins were playing in the ocean.

People watching….that’s always fun….a book, and just enjoying this beautiful spot we live in and not taking it for granted.

Awesome weather this summer, for sure!!

Shopping, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Favorite Picks on Memorial Week-End, Nation’s Summer Capital, Tax Free Shopping, Southern Delaware, Accessories! They should enhance; Not overshadow!

100_2321

It goes without saying that shopping at the Delaware Beaches is part of the ritual if you are visiting Southern Delaware.  Tax free shopping!!  Our casual lifestyle at the beaches is fun and carefree .  As I was walking in Rehoboboth Beach this week-end I had my picks.

I was thinking that adding spunk and pizzaz with accessories for ourselves or homes can either make or break the look.  The rule of thumb is not to overpower.  This rule is timeless.  Use accessories that will work with your wardrobe or your home decor.

dscn3030

Remember that it is called an accessory because you want it to enhance and not overshadow.

No outfit is complete without the proper accessory.

In Downtown Rehoboth Beach on the ocean block I found Tiger Lili.  This shop has clothing, jewelry, handbags, shoes, and accessories….Sorry guys, not for you.

These bags were calling Summer!!

dscn3748

And these were the cutest sandals.  And, since it is going to be in the 80s this week, they are the perfect sandal to wear out and about in town or wear them to dinner.

dscn3749dscn3751

dscn3750

Nothing better than a good conversation piece or pieces when having guests for drinks or dinner.  There is a new store in town called The Spice & Tea Exchange, also located on the ocean block in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  These items will get your guests talking.

The Himalayan Grater Stone is beautiful pink salt that is harvested by hand from ancient sea-beds located in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains.  All you have to do is put them on the table and grate the salt with a micro-planer.  It comes out very fine and you don’t need that much to get great taste.

dscn3737

The salt blocks and platters are also going to create great conversation.  These blocks and platters can be heated or cooled; put them in the oven or freezer.  They can be used for food preparation and table presentation.

dscn3741

dscn3738

Mod Cottage is located at 247 A Rehoboth Avenue.  This shop has great accessories for the home and plenty for gift giving, as well.

dscn3035dscn3036

dscn3081

Jane & Georgie just inaugurated their new building…same spot on 419 Rehoboth Avenue.  This shop has plenty of indulgences, we, women love.  Tops, dresses, and the beach indispensables.

dscn2999

dscn2998

dscn2997

At 29819 Coastal Highway you will find Tulip.  It has everything you can imagine…furniture, lamps, art…but since I am concentrating on accessories, these finds were perfect.  The stone on this bracelet is Labradorite.  Other stones are available.

Plenty of more shops to visit in the Nation’s Summer Capital!!  Let the Summer of 2013 begin!

“Beach Eats”, Exhibit, Rehoboth Museum, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Iconic Eateries, Delaware Beaches

img_5666

Do you remember the milk man?  I do.  The milk delivered in glass containers, the cream the top.

A trip through memory lane.  This is what the Rehoboth Museum and Rehoboth Historical Society will be showcasing in their upcoming exhibit to open on Memorial Day, called “Beach Eats”.

dscn4104

Rehoboth Beach is famous for its fine dining establishments.  However, many who visit are drawn by perennial favorites such as French fries, pizza, cotton candy and caramel corn.

Nothing better than Thrasher’s with plenty of apple cider vinegar…and salt.

dscn2286

This new exhibit also needs the public’s help.  The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society is asking you to search around the house or the attic for keepsakes of your favorite eateries from childhood to adulthood.

Robin Hood Restaurant

The exhibit will share the tradition and history of the splendid yet long gone wooden hotels of the 1900s and bring to light the evolution of restaurants serving residents and visitors alike.

img_5675

If you have an old sign, napkin, menu or a matchbook to share please contact the museum.  The Museum would like establishments old and new, as well as individuals to search around and see if they can find memorabilia that will enhance, the Exhibit, “Beach Eats”.  The objects can be designated as a donation or on loan for the duration of the Exhibit.

Gus & Gus, located on Wilmington Avenue and the Boardwalk is one of those “iconic” establishments.

Gus Svolis on the left, Bill Svolis on the right.  They are holding the sign from their restaurant donated to the Rehoboth Museum for the upcoming exhibit.

If visiting Rehoboth Beach for the first time the Rehoboth Beach Museum is a must stop.  It is also the home of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society.  The Society’s mission is to preserve and showcase artifacts that illustrate the development of Rehoboth Beach.

The Museum is in the former icehouse where ice was cut from local lakes and stored in a wooden structure insulated with sawdust during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The Museum is located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue, right by the roundabout.  For more information, please call 302-227-7310, or visit their website at http://www.rehobothmuseum.org.  Follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

Have a great day!!

Morgan & Gower, Cheesemongers, Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Purveyors: Handcrafted Cheeses, Charcuterie, Fine Foods…An Indulgence I could get used to, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

I am now armed with my new booklet called “33 Pieces of Cheese”.  Yes, I am now ready for some slices, wedges and crumbles too!!  If I am going to go cheese hounding in Rehoboth Beach with Jody, I will need this useful information.

dscn2072dscn2073

You know how it is; you taste some cheese….you remember how good it was, etc. etc….then, that’s as far as it goes.  Now, I have my tool which will remind me, provided I write it down, which cheeses I like the best.

dscn2044

Downtown Rehoboth Beach is the perfect town to go out and about.  At this time of the year, when all the shops and restaurants are gearing up for a new season, it is the most fun.  Perfect for checking out what this Nation’s Summer Capital is all about…..the beach, the town, shops, restaurants, music venues, and its history.

dscn2034

I used to visit this building for several years, every day….It was the Epworth Church.  That’s where my youngest son went to pre-school.  Eventually, this building became the home of several artists, Clear Space Theatre, and just recently, last fall, the home of a gourmet cheese shop called Morgan & Gower…cheesemongers.  It is located at 20 Baltimore Avenue.  Tel. 302-727-5566.  Like them on Facebook!

dscn2035

It is a small shop; great for easy conversation and information from our cheesemongers.  You want your cheesemonger to be approachable.  On that day Zack and Ken were there.  These two embodied what cheesemongers should be; passionate about their cheeses, making tastings available, explaining the origins and body of the cheese, and even suggesting parings with other foods and wines.

dscn2042

We were not the only customers at the shop, but they took their time to make sure we made the right selections based on what we liked.  Buying good cheese is an experience and an indulgence.  Cheeses can be expensive.  Think of it, 1 lb. of cheese takes about 10 lbs. of milk.

I fell in love with the following 2 cheeses:  The paper used to wrap the cheeses had a wax lining, which protects the cheese.

Midnight Moon from California.  It is rare, and a popular goat’s milk gouda.  Firm, dense and smooth.  Caramel notes accompanied by nutty, and brown butter flavors.

dscn2059

The other one was called Brewster, a Gouda from Holland.  These two cheeses were completely different and totally amazing.  The Midnight Moon was softer and the Brewster was a much harder cheese.

dscn2055

I spotted a French mustard that I used to buy years ago; Moutard de Meaux.  Morgan & Gower are the only ones carrying it in Rehoboth Beach.  I had forgotten how good it was.  I also had forgotten how hard it was to open.  Zack reminded me, before I bought it.  You just have to get the hang of it.

dscn2125

The shop has other fine foods that can only be found in shops like this one.  The olives looked amazing.

dscn2039

Since we live at the beach, guests seem to materialized out of nowhere….Morgan & Gower could be lifesaving!

dscn2040dscn2036

Looking forward to my next cheese indulgence:

Pepato from New Jersey is a pecorino style cheese with added whole black peppercorns!!

And, Idiazabal from the Basque/Navarra region.  This is a Hawthorne smoked cheese made from the raw milk of Laxta and carranza sheep.  It is also called “queso de tapeo”.  You will find this cheese served at Spain’s famous tapas bars.

dscn2049

So, what do you think?  These cheeses go a long way.  A little bite here or there with a glass of wine…and good company, of course!

Have a good one!!  Talk to you later.

Even though I started this post saying that it is usually more subdued in Rehoboth Beach after a holiday week-end, well, I just came from having dinner in Rehoboth and almost could not get a parking space….popular place.

I went to Confucius, which is located at 57 Wilmington Ave., in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Danielle and Shawn, the owners, were there, as usual.  Great couple; they make you feel very comfortable.  This is one of those restaurants that is very aware of customers with food allergies.  Will go out of their way, and will substitute or make you something special.  They are open year-round and it is a favorite with Rehoboth Beach residents.  Website?  http://www.confuciusrehobothbeach.com.

I had tonight a dish that I have had several times.  Always delicious…The whole black seabass, fried till crispy, topped with honey vinegar sauce…a bit spicy too.

dscn7658

Have a great week-end…relax, you are at the Beach!!

Vacationing in..Rehoboth Beach, Rehoboth Beach Museum, Activities, Events, You Experience Rehoboth Beach Now, but, How Was it Then?, Delaware Beaches

dscn3552

For the ones that love, promote and are still discovering Rehoboth Beach, like me, the Rehoboth Beach Museum give us a starting point to show our guests, families and friends that are visiting Rehoboth Beach, how far this town has come.

The Museum was opened to the public in 2007 with a lot of help from the local community.  You are experiencing the Rehoboth of now, but how was the Rehoboth of yesterday?  Dive into the local history of the town.  For example, both the Rehoboth Museum and the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society call the Old Ice House, home.  Old Ice House?  Yes, the history is all there.  Then, you will realize why Rehoboth Beach, even though it is a year-round resort, it is also called the Nation’s Summer Capital.

dscn3551

The Rehoboth Museum is a small museum, but don’t let that fool you.  It is packed with activities, exhibits, celebrations, and programs for all ages.  Nancy Alexander is the Director.  The Rehoboth Museum is located at 511 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. 302-227-7310.  Website?  www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.  There is plenty of parking available; handicap access, as well.  It is in the same complex where the Visitors’ Center and the Rehoboth Beach Chamber of Commerce are located.  Can’t miss it; right by the roundabout.

Nancy Alexander, Director and one of the girls.

Nancy Alexander, Director and one of the girls.

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to help out in an event the Museum had for girls.  It was an afternoon of tea, with their dolls.  Also, it was a time for old fashioned games.  The girls that visited talked about their dolls, wrote about them, new friends were met and ate delicious finger sandwiches, pastries and enjoy a delicious and refreshing punch.

dscn3502dscn3550dscn3526

So, what’s happening at the Museum?  So much, that I decided to give them their own post.  Let’s get started.

Friday, 6/22 – Fundraising Dinner at Fish On! at the Villages of Five Points in Lewes, at 6:30 p.m.  The menu for the evening is inspired by the recipes of the 1940’s.  The recipes were created during wartime and were the necessity of those on the home front to give up some basic food options.  Don’t worry, though in the 1940s there was rationing, no Spam will be served.  The menu, prepared by Chef Jen Blakemen and her team will consist of Hearty White Bread and Butter, Meatloaf, hearty, of course, Savory Herb Bread Pudding.  Victory garden fresh veggies, and Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats.  Note:  Please call the Museum asap, since I am putting this post a little late.  Tel. 302-227-7310. Tickets are $40 for members and $45 for future members.

Thursday, 6/28 – “WWII German Submarines in the Mid-Atlantic” – The presentation on Thursday will start at 7 p.m. at the Museum.  Capt. William Manthorpe will discuss “Operation Drumroll” and the role of local residents thwarting German sub attacks.  Free for members, $5 for future members , $3 for senior citizens, military personnel and students.  Please call 302-227-7310 to reserve a seat.

WWII_rack_card_image

This lecture will examine the real risk to the Atlantic coast by German coastal submarine attacks.  Rehoboth Beach was often included in the concern of such threats.  The naval defense heritage of Delaware in connection with Rehoboth Beach, and some physical effects of the war such as tar balls found on the shores.  Also, the possibility of spies in the immediate are will be discussed.

Thursday, 7/5 – 7:00 p.m. –  World War II: Rehoboth Beach.  This exhibit was planned and created as a collaborative partnership between the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society, the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs and the Delaware Humanities Forum.

A WWII German Prisoner of War jacket from the Purnell Collection of the State of Delaware Office of Historical and Cultural Affairs

A WWII German Prisoner of War jacket from the Purnell Collection of the State of Delaware Office of Historical and Cultural Affairs

In a continuation of programs relating to the exhibit, Michael Morgan, a retired teacher, has been writing freelance newspaper and magazine articles for over 3 decades.  He is currenly working on a book exploring Delaware’s role in the Civil War.

On Thursday, July 5th, the presentation by Mr. Morgan will encourage audience participation.  He will reveal what is was like in the day-to-day life of those who lived in the town by the sea.  “Rehoboth was literally on the frontlines with ships being sunk within sight of the coast throughout the war.  Residents kept a careful eye on the ocean where enemy submarines were on the prowl.”

It will be an interesting evening at the Museum; German subs, blackouts, and Coast Guardsmen on horseback.  Call 302-227-7310 to reserve a space.

Sunday, 7/8 – A new program for young writers will be offered at the Rehoboth Beach Museum starting on July 8th.  The workshop is limited to 5 children, ages 10-12.  The purpose of the small group is to offer a one on one experience and encourage the exploration of the wold of their own words.  The group will be led by Barbara Smith, former writer and photographer for the Baltimore Sun.  It will meet for 5 consecutive Sundays from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.

During the sessions the children will read and discuss The Coastwatcher by Elise Weston, a story about a child living at the coast during World War II.  The workshop is geared to the enjoyment of writing.  The cost is $35.  The Coastwatcher should be purchased or can be found at the library in advance of the session.  Please call for more info. and to reserve a space 302-227-7310.

Have a great day!!  Talk to you later…..

Vacationing in Rehoboth Beach, The Nation’s Summer Capital, Delaware, The Rehoboth Beach Visitors’ Center, The Rehoboth Railroad Station, Gateway to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches

dscn4567

“The Nation’s Summer Capital” – In 1925 a paved highway was finished between Georgetown and Rehoboth Beach.  This helped link Rehoboth to the paved roads towards Washington, D.C.  Soon, after that, it was so much easier to get to and from the resort.  Diplomats, legislators and government employees made Rehoboth Beach their summer destination.  At present, Rehoboth Beach and the surrounding Delaware Beaches are a year-round destination.  A way to get out of town, so to speak.

Front

Front

This Visitors’ Center in Rehoboth Beach is the easiest to spot.  I decided to visit on Thursday because this is no ordinary Visitors’ Center.  This charming building was a full fledge train station.  It was built in 1879 just after train service was extended to Rehoboth Beach.  Travel to the beach was found to be easier, faster, and more comfortable.

dscn4557

This is not its original location.  It was closer to the ocean on Rehoboth Avenue.

In the 1920s, train travel to and from Rehoboth Beach came to a stop. It had always been seasonal, suspended during the winter.

In 1927 Rehoboth Avenue was being paved.  The Station was stripped of its shed roofs and was moved to a side of Rehoboth Ave. adjoining other buildings. On that spot it continued to function as an express freight and a Western Union Office.  Sold in 1950 after all service was ended.

Back with plenty of parking

Back with plenty of parking

The Station was always remembered as The Railroad Station regardless of which businesses occupied it.  In 1987 the Station was moved to this present site at 501 Rehoboth Ave., at Lighthouse Island Park.

In 1985 the Rehoboth Railroad Station Preservation Society was formed.  Members of the Rehoboth Beach Homeowners Association and the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerced got to work promptly to restore an important piece of this community’s past.

Inside the Visitors’ Center you will find plenty of information to keep you busy during your stay in our coastal village. Discounts; remember your Sand Dollar Savings card is available, free of charge.

It looks like the inside of a train station; which is really what it was.  Old photos of what Rehoboth Beach used to look like will amaze you at how far this town has come; still keeping its integrity.

So, make this your first stop as you embark on the enjoyment of everything Rehoboth Beach!!

Have a great Day!!  Talk to you later.

Note:  Information for this post was taken from information provided on the brochure of Rails along The Chesapeake, A History of Railroading on the Delmarva Peninsula 1827-1978, John C. Hayman; Marvadel Publishers.  The History of the Rehoboth Railroad Station.
