Did you know that the Horseshoe Crab is Delaware’s official State Marine Animal?  Delaware, (the first State), is the first state to have an official marine animal.

It’s a beautiful week-end…if you are visiting the First Town in the First State this is what’s going on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Saturday, 9/15 – The Lewes Historic Farmers’ Market will take place, as it usually does, on Saturdays at the Lewes Historical Society Campus.  The last Saturday for this market will be Saturday, 9/29.  8 a.m. until Noon.  Please visit http://www.historiclewesfarmersmarket.org.  In their website, you can find directions, market recipes, market events, and the market news.

Saturday, 9/15 – It is the 14th Annual Artists’ Studio Tour – 20 regionally and nationally acclaimed local artists will be opening their studios.  Meet them and view their work.  Ask them questions…they’ll be happy to meet you.  You may even be able to win a work of art at each location.   You can find the maps at retails stores, hotels and motels around Lewes.  Also, you can pick the maps at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce located at 120 Kings Highway.  Visit the Chamber’s website at http://www.leweschamber.com.

Saturday, 9/15 – Wings of Hope – A Butterfly Release to benefit the Cancer Support Community Delaware (formerly known as The Wellness Community Delaware).  The event will be held at the Medical Arts Building, 18947 John J. Williams Highway, (Rt. 24).  Admission is free and all ages are welcome.  The event includes activities, entertainment, vendors and refreshments.  Seeded butterfly cutouts ($10) will be available for purchase as well as the opportunity to release your own live butterfly.  The event culminates in a butterfly garden created by Sposato Landscape with the release of 250 Monarch butterflies.  More info?  Please visit http://www.cancersupportdelaware.org/wingsofhope.  Cancer Support Community Delaware is the only organization in Delaware dedicated exclusively to helping people cope with and manage the emotional aspect of cancer.  All programs are free of charge.

Sunday, 9/16 – 9th Annual Cannonball 5K Run/Walk 2012 – 7:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  You are invited to a 5K Race to Support The Lewes Historical Society.  Rain or Shine.  A 5K Run & 5K Walk begins and ends at the Lewes Historical Society’s Historic Complex.  Enjoy the scenic race course…many call it “The Most Beautiful Race Course in Delaware”.  Post Race Party at Striper Bites following the race.  Wooden Cannonballs are fashioned for the 1st,  2nd and 3rd place winners in eight age groups from 9 to 70+, as well as special awards for Overall and Masters Champion.  To register, please visit http://www.historiclewes.org.  Or, please call 302-645-7670.

Monday, 9/17 – Harry Derrickson Memorial Golf Tournament.  A benefit for Meals on Wheels Lewes/Rehoboth.  Rehoboth Beach Golf & Country Club in Rehoboth Beach.  11 a.m. until 6 p.m.  Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the tournament starts at Noon.  Meals on Wheels Lewes/Rehoboth helps seniors maintain healthy, independent lives by providing hot meals and warm smiles each weekday to over 200 agency clients.  More information?  Please visit http://www.beachmeals.com.

A quaint historic town, Lewes, is an attraction for many visiting the Delaware Beaches.  Lots of restaurants, shops and plenty to do.  It is a great week-end get-away; only a couple hours from Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

If you are visiting Lewes, this is what’s going on this week-end.

Until Sunday, 9/9 – The Kalmar Nyckel is docked at the Cape-May Lewes Ferry Terminal.  Tours, Day Sail, and Even a Pirate Sail are available.  All you have to do is check their schedule by visiting http://www.kalmarnyckel.org/bookasail.asp.  The original Kalmar Nyckel was one of America’s pioneering colonial ships.  The present one serves as Delaware’s seagoing Goodwill Ambassador.

If you happen to see this little, very innocent, seagull…and you are having something to eat at the On The Rocks Bar & Grill right there at the Cape May Lewes Ferry….he will steal your food. Does not matter if you are a child or a more matured individual.  I saw him.  If he could have lifted a hamburger, he would have done so.  So, you have been warned.

Friday, 9/7 – Lewes “History Happy Hour” – Jim Bertholet presents ” The Life and Work of a Surfmen in the US Life-Saving Service 1870’s-1915″, at the Lewes Life-Saving Station at the Canal and Front Street next to the Lightship Overfalls.  Mr. Bertholet is a life-long history buff who grew up on the Jersey shore and always had a particular interest in maritime history, especially the US Life-Saving Service and US Lighthouses.

Saturday, 9/8 – Historic Lewes Farmers’ Market, at the Lewes Historical Society Complex, located at 110 Shipcarpenter Street.  8 a.m. until Noon.  More info?  Please visit http://www.historiclewesfarmersmarket.org.  The website has very good information, including recipes.

Saturday, 9/8 – The Seventh Annual Chocolate Tasting in The Park, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Biden Center in Cape Henlopen State Park.  $5.00 admission gives you 6 tastings.  Please note that admission to the State Park is still in effect.

Sunday, 9/9 – 3rd Annual Treat the Beat sponsored by the Beebe Medical Foundation.  5K Walk.  Location? At the George H.P. Smith Park at Blockhouse Pond behind Beebe Medical Center.  The 5K Walk travels through Lewes and raises funds for Cardiac and Vascular Services at Beebe Medical Center.  In 2011, $17,000 were raise from this event, and a portion of the funds were used by Beebe’s Cardiac Rehab Dept. to purchase a recumbent cross training machine.  Participation is free but all walkers must register.  All participants are encouraged to donate or raise donations.

Monday, 9/10 – At the Zwaanendael Museum, located at 102 Kings Highway, in Lewes.  His Majesty’s Sloop DeBraak, from 10 a.m.  until 2 p.m.  Learn its history.  The DeBraak capsized on May 25, 1798.  The program includes a trip to the hull facility near Cape Henlopen State Park.  It will be an interpreter-led tour of the ship’s remains.  $10 in advance by making a reservation on the website http://www.history.delaware.gov.

Tuesday, 9/18 – Chicks for Charity of Southern Delaware Dinner at Fish On Restaurant located at The Villages of Five Points in Lewes, Delaware.  This group is led by Kari and Marci and is dedicated to making life a little easier for those in need.  Their first dinner was in 2010; one charity picked per month.  If you want to know more about this non-profit, please visit http://www.chicksforcharity.us.  It starts at 6:30 p.m.  $25 per person, guys are also welcomed.  It includes gratuity.  Cash or check only payable to Fish On.  This month’s dinner will benefit La Red Health Center.  This Center provides affordable, quality healthcare to the residents of Sussex County.  http://laredhealthcenter.org There will be raffle items and a 50/50 too!!  RSVP to gals4thegood@aol.com.  No calls to the restaurant, please.

A Tip:  If you are visiting Lewes or if you are a resident of our Delaware Beaches….Want to go for a bike ride?  Park at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal and you will find a hut from Lewes Cycle Sports.  It is self serve.  Plenty of bikes for rent. Lewes was named after the town of Lewes in England, which is also located in a county named Sussex, from which Sussex County takes its name.  They also have the same seal.

Historic Lewes is a gem and visitors can’t wait to come back and visit this town whose residents are friendly and have made sure Lewes keeps it charm and small town atmosphere.

Saturday, 8/4 – Lewes Historical Society’s Antique Show from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.  The Lewes Historical Society celebrates its 49th Annual Antique Show.  Admission will be $5 per person, children under 12 are free.  If you wish to enter the show earlier than 9 a.m. for a sneak preview, then, the admission will be $15/person.  This event benefits educational preservation programs at The Lewes Historical Society.  For more info, please visit http://www.historiclewes.org.

Saturday, 8/4 – Lewes Night Out from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.  This event will be held at Blockhouse Pond/Smith Park, located at the corner of Park Ave. and Johnson Street in Lewes.  It is sponsored by the Lewes Police Dept., and it is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support and participation in local crime efforts.  Residents in neighborhoods throughout Lewes and across the nation for National Night Out are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police.

Saturday, 8/11 – It is the 6th Annual Tomato Festival from 8 a.m. until Noon, at the Lewes Historical Society Complex located at 110 Shipcarpenter St.  Bring everyone to celebrate National Farmers Market Week.  Visit the tasting tent.  Learn the history and lore.  In May of 1883, the Supreme Court ruled that the tomato was not a fruit but a vegetable.  Visit http://www.historiclewesfarmersmarket.org.

Saturday, 8/11 – Delaware Lighthouse Festival from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.  Location?  On the Green at the Lewes Terminal of the Cape May Lewes Ferry, 43 Cape Henlopen Drive. Tuesday, 8/14 – Lewes Terminal Hosts “Phantoms of the Ferry”.  7:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m., spend a night with the “Phantoms of the Ferry”.  The Cape May-Lewes Ferry has teamed up with Delmarva Historic Haunts, the lab group of Gettysburg Paranormal, to bring you a night of haunted history uncovering the mysterious past of long ago sailors.  Hundreds of unidentified sailors’ bodies washed ashore on the beaches of Lewes.  The land beneath the Lewes Ferry Terminal served as burial grounds for these lost seafarers, and some say they are still with us today.  Buffet dinner followed by a Paranormal 101 class.  Students will learn the skills it takes to be an investigator from a real, on the road crew.  $35 per person.  Not recommended for children under 12 years of age.  Reservations are recommended.  To reserve your tickets, please call our Customer Contact Center at 1-800-643-3779.

Always good to hear exciting news coming from The Villages of Five Point in Lewes, Delaware.  This is a community, where everything is accessible to you; shopping, dining, and living. 

The Villages of Five Points is located on Savannah Rd. in Lewes, Delaware.  They call it Summer on the Green and the events are kicking off tonight.  If you are at the Delaware Beaches and have finally relaxed after a great 4th of July celebration….this might interest you.

At their Community Center Lawn is Thursday night at the Movies!!  7:30 p.m.  Dolphin Tale will be the feature this evening.  It is an amazing true story of a brave dolphin and the compassionate strangers who banded together to save her life.

On July 12th, Hugo will be the next showing.  Both movies are PG.   There are more movies scheduled for the summer season, so make sure you check the website.

Friday, July 6th – Love Seed Mama Jump will be rocking the Villages of Five Points.  At the Community Center Lawn.  Bring your whole family and friends…It is FREE.  A local band that can get the party going and your feet stomping.
