Flag Day, June 14, Indian River Life Saving Station, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware, Sussex County

100_4281

Miles of beach, up and down the Delaware Coast, the surfmen were the keepers of our shores.  They patrolled the desolate and dangerous beaches, looking for shipwrecks and warning vessels of the imminent dangers along the coastline.

100_4269

The years were 1876 – 1915.

100_4273

The Indian River Life Saving Station is located south of Dewey Beach, Delaware, and a mile north of the Indian River Inlet.

100_4245

Built in 1876, it is the only station in Delaware still standing in its original location.

100_4252

The U.S. Flag flew over the station and this particular flag has 38 stars and was the official Flag of the U.S. from 1877 – 1890.

100_4265

Today is Flag Day, dedicated to celebrating the adoption of the American Flag by the Second Continental Congress in 1777.

It is believed Flag Day originated in 1885.  More info.?  Please visit http://www.usflag.org/flag.day.html.

Sea glass can be found all over the world.  Combing the shoreline for sea glass is a hobby for many.  The beaches of the northeast United States, California, northwest England, Mexico, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Nova Scotia, Italy and southern Spain are famous for it.

The photo shows sea glass from the island of Culebra in Puerto Rico.

The Snowy Owl, Rare Raptor, From The Artic, To The Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware, Sussex County

dscn7098

A gorgeous day in the Delmarva Peninsula.  And a surprise for me when I stopped to get some info. at the Indian River Life Saving Station, which is located south of Rehoboth and Dewey Beach and just north of the Indian River Inlet.

They told me that the snowy owl was over by the dunes.  I did not have to look far….professional photographers were already there.

dscn7089

Me?  I just took my camera out of my pocket.

From the Artic tundra the Snowy Owl has had a long journey.  It is the official bird of Quebec.

dscn7100

They are attracted to large open spaces.  They love coastal dunes.

dscn7099

This particular one looks like it is a female.  Just sitting on the dune looking probably for food to refuel.  If you spot a Snowy Owl, please be respectful and keep your distance…this is a rare raptor.

dscn7101

Have a good one!!

Historic Shipwreck Rescue Reenactment, Indian River Life Saving Station, Saturday, August, 17th, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m., Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn4961

At the Delaware Beaches?  What are your plans?  Check What’s Happening at the Indian River Life Saving Station, on Saturday, August 17th, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

There are many beautiful places to visit in Southern Delaware and this one is one of my favorites.  A historic life saving station.

Back on August 29, 2010 I wrote a post with pictures on the station.  In it I mentioned that I used to drive by it all the time and never stopped.  Since that time I have stopped plenty of times and every time I like it even more.  To see my post, please click on the month of August of 2010 and scroll down to the 29th, right here on AboutMyBeaches.

The Indian River Life Saving Station at the Delaware State Park is one of only 3 sites in the country which re-creates this famous rescue demonstration to the public.

The station is located on Rt 1 (Coastal Highway), 3.5 miles south of Dewey Beach, and 1.5 miles north of the Indian River Inlet.

The ship rescue will be coming to life with interpreters dressed in period uniform.  They will reenact one of the most exciting and significant practices used to save the lives of the shipwrecked marines of our beach community’s past.

The United States Life Saving Service was a forerunner of the U.A. Coast Guard.  It was established in 1870.  It was used to launch rescue missions and assist victims of shipwrecks along America’s coastlines.

Admission for this event will be $6.50 for adults including museum tour, $4 for ages 6 to 12, $5 for seniors, 62 and older, and free for 5 years of age and under.  More info?  Please call 302-227-6991.

Have a good one!!

Delaware Seashore State Park, Beach, Tower Road, Concession, Parking, Delaware Beaches are Sizzling!!! Hot Day at the Beach! Sunday, July 21st, 3rd Annual Maritime Heritage Festival, Indian River Life-Saving Station, Southern Delaware

100_1039

The beach was the place to be on this scorching day at the Delaware Beaches.  So, my choice of beach today was Tower Road located south of Dewey Beach, Delaware….it is a Delaware Seashore State Park beach.

dscn4959

Out of state cars are $8, and cars with Delaware tags are $4.  This is a particular nice beach, with plenty of parking.  The concession offers French Fries, Hot Dogs, and plenty of the grub we all love at the beach.  Two of the WWII Towers stand as usual….these historic sentinels are always watching.

dscn4989

dscn4986

At the end of the ramp I noticed the beach wheelchair.  It is free for anyone who needs help on the beach.

dscn4964

The Delaware State Parks offer many events and fun activities for the whole family.  On Wednesdays, through August 15th, is Kayaking Station Cove at 9:30 a.m.  On Thursdays, you can catch a boat tour, at 10 a.m. until Noon, where you can explore the Inland Bays.  The cost is $20.  If you don’t want to wake up that early, then, they have a Rehoboth Bay Sightseeing Tour from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.  This tour is $19.  More info?  Please call 302-227-6991, or, visit http://www.destateparks.com.

dscn4958

dscn4994

The beach at Tower Road is very wide.  I used to always park on the north side, but, today, Susie and I decided to just sit in the thick of things.  Please remember to take your sandals on very hot days because the sand gets very hot.  And, if you do not have an umbrella, they also have them for rent at $12 per day.

dscn4965

dscn4970

Sitting next to the lifeguards we could see that today was a very uneventful day.  So, a little weight lifting when the temperature soars to 97 degrees was just the thing to do.

dscn4969

It was such a typical day at the beach….nothing different.  The sand bucket looked the same, the kids were digging, some were fishing, and this seagull was the perfect scavenger.
