Fire & Ice, Hot Wing Tasting, Ice Cream Tasting, Polar Bear Plunge, Special Olympics Delaware, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, I have Died and Gone to Heaven

An annual event for many years The Polar Bear Plunge Weekend has been raising funds for Special Olympics Delaware. So many people come to Rehoboth Beach because what else are you going to do the first week in February?

I got a call from our local celebrity, The Rehoboth Foodie, wondering if I could take his place judging the wings and ice cream event. Is the Pope Catholic? Of course, I was honored.

I have an idea how my wings should look and taste. I was so excited.

The event was at The Atlantic Sands Hotel on Baltimore Ave. And these were your Judges?

Left to right was Kathy, the Rehoboth Foodie’s sister, yours truly, Pam George, writer, editor and food blogger, and Steve, her husband.

Wing enthusiasts will be celebrating Super Bowl Sunday eating away chicken wings prepared in many different ways. It has been stated that about 1 billion wings will be enjoyed on that day.?

Prior to the public coming in we went through the different tables tasting. We had to judge based on Appearance, Texture/Tenderness, Taste. For the ice, same except no tenderness ?

My first stop was Zogg’s. They are located on 1 Wilmington Ave.

I loved everything about them. They hit all the boxes in such an amazing way.

Next tasting was Tiki Jac’s. They are located at 71 Rehoboth Ave. These wings looked beautiful. Smoked with a rum glaze. I would have preferred them more crispy.

I was told that when you are cooking wings for the amount of guests coming in…….1,500 expected the sauces or glazes poured over tend to soften the skin.

Let’s try an ice cream to clean the palate. Woodside Creamery had a delicious ice cream. They are located in Hockessin and everything is made from scratch. The only place you can get their ice cream in Rehoboth Beach is at The Ice Cream Store. It hit all the boxes.

You start eating and yummy it is and then that green caramel explodes in your mouth.

A stop to Fish On was next.

Their wings looked great.

Usually when you order wings they bring you a blue cheese sauce for dipping. A sprinkle of blue cheese gave them a great kick.

Iron Hill Brewery had another great presentation but I still think they needed to be crispier. Iron Hill is located at 19815 Coastal Highway.

Kara’s Sugar Kitchen. Soft almost like a custard.

Ladies I love your photo?? I apologize because while enjoying my ice cream I forgot to take a photo. The crisp complemented the ice cream so well.

Kara’s Sugar Kitchen is on Social Media.

Kiwi’s Kove had a blend of spices giving them a little heat. They are located at 101 N. Boardwalk

The doors opened and I could see the people were ready. It was so much fun and for a very good cause with funds staying in Delaware.

Our job was complete but not before telling Kathy that it was a pleasure to have met her.

Until then. Please remember that AboutMyBeaches is on Instagram and Facebook.

Ice Cream, Hopkins Farm Creamery, A Basil Surprise, Lewes, Delaware, Delaware Beaches

I Scream for Ice Cream. I love it year round. Hopkins Farm Creamery has so many flavors. It is located at 18186 Dairy Farm Rd. In Lewes, DE. It is right on Rt 9. That’s the road that takes you to Georgetown. You can’t miss it.

A couple of weeks ago the annual event to raise funds for Meals on Wheels took place at Ivy in Dewey. This is a competition where guests go by the tables of local restaurants and taste and vote for favorites. It is a fun night raising money for a good cause.

I shared on my AboutMyBeaches some of my favorites but this particular best on my book was the garnish. Yes, you heard it right. How could a garnish capture someone’s intensity so much?

Hopkins Farm Creamery had its table, sign and all.

And the delicious ice cream to taste.

Here comes the part that captured my attention. Do you see the garnish? You could eat. It was crispy, sweet with that delicious basil leave.

I was not the only one talking about it. This is what they told me. You make an egg wash with egg white and brush it on both sides of the basil leave. Then, sprinkle heavily with granulated sugar and let it dry at room temperature.

I lined a cookie sheet with waxed paper then on a plate put the sugar in order to heavily coat the leave on both sides. I let it sit until I could tell it was dry. It came out perfectly. Check it out.

Perfect as a garnish when you want your guest to say I Want The Recipe.

I then saved them overnight but that’s all they lasted. Better make them the day of.

Check out their website to see what’s going on at the creamery. Remember AboutMyBeaches is on FB and Instagram.

Have a great day?

Kaisy’s Delights, Restaurant, Lewes, Delaware, Breakfast, Lunch, Baked Goods, Ice cream, Delaware Beaches

Love Kaisy’s located at 1548 Savannah Rd. In Lewes, Delaware. I don’t plan my visit. It may be I just go through the drive through for coffee, or like the other day when I stopped for a chicken salad. They open from 6 to 6?

Table cloth, cloth napkins. And, pink all around. It is quiet and the menu is extensive offering breakfast, lunch and ice cream too?

I have been buying my coffee beans there. I do have a grinder. I don’t consider myself a coffee snub. But their coffee is from La Colombe, headquartered in Philly. It is the best.

It is a beautiful Friday in Southern Delaware. I am having my coffee but Sadie my rescue is barking her head off because they are cutting the grass.

Oh well, have a great day. AboutMyBeaches has a FB page and it is also on Instagram.

Ice Cream Tasting, Cups & Cones, Milkshakes & Sundaes, Pumpkin Pie, Cappucino Delight, Chocolate Banana Walnut, Hopkins Farm Creamery, Gluten Free Flavors, Lewes, Delaware

dscn8698

Ice cream aficionados will all agree; it is never too chilly for ice cream.  It is my downfall.  I love it any time of the year.  I also do not discriminate. From a Frosty to homemade ice cream….an addiction, I would say.

dscn8701

Remember how gorgeous it was on Sunday at the Delaware Beaches?  Well, I took off with Michael to Hopkins Farm Creamery which is located at Green Acres Dairy Farm at 18186 Dairy Farm Rd.  You cannot miss it because it is at the intersection of Rt. 9 and Dairy Farm Rd.  Tel. 302-645-7163.  Website? http://www.hopkinsfarmcreamery.com.  Green Acres Dairy Farm has been owned and operated by the same family for 4 generations.

dscn8697

Michael and I were looking for seasonal flavors.  The first thing I saw was a lady carrying the biggest ice cream cone.  Two flavors; Cappuccino Delight and Butter Pecan.

dscn8693

You will find so many flavors.  Plenty of Gluten Free Flavors, as well.  They are well marked.

dscn8694

A triple scoop of Pumpkin Pie.

dscn8699

A double scoop of Cappuccino Delight.

dscn8700

Michael and I agreed; the flavors were defined.  The Pumpkin Pie tasted just like that.  The same with the Cappuccino Delight.  Both were very smooth and not overly sweet, either.

We also took a take out of Chocolate, Banana, Walnut and more of the Pumpkin Pie.

Our private tasting still showed that the Pumpkin Pie was so delicious.  Gluten Free too!!

dscn8704

And, the Chocolate, Banana, Walnut was also very well received.  The ice cream had the predominant flavor of chocolate with a hint of banana.

dscn8706

Hopkins Farm Creamery is open Sunday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.  Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m.

dscn8695

Check the website because there are coupons available, plus plenty of information on this most unique farm.  You can also find them on Facebook and Twitter.

dscn8696

Have a good one!!

Annie’s Banannies, Rehoboth Beach, Bananas, Dessert, Fresh Fruit Toppings, Review, Delaware Beaches

 100_3272

Okay Renee, I got it.  Totally a fan now.  I can see why you go there every day and have one of Annie’s Banannies.

And, Mac, you are also a regular and you were not kidding when you told me it is the best dessert in town.

100_3418

The friends who mentioned that Annie’s Banannies is their favorite place.  I did not know they also knew Mac.

100_3424

The word is spreading; how good this dessert is.  Word of mouth again is a powerful tool.

100_3420

Annie’s Banannies is my post tonight.  I went twice to their location on 9 1st Street South in downtown Rehoboth Beach.  If you are a local or a resident and know the town well, Annie’s Banannies is one door down from the Frogg Pond.  The telephone is 302-260-9875.  The website is www.anniesbanannies.net. The e-mail address is anniesbanannies@comcast.net.

Please check the website because the menu is posted, as well as Annie’s story; on how finally her store was realized; a tender and uplifting summary of what Annie is all about.  It is her own creation!!

100_3405

100_3406

Her motto?  You’ll never dream….it’s not ice cream.

All natural ingredients that are good for you.  The main ingredient?  A frozen banana that will be put through a “juicer” and the outcome is like the most delicious ice cream.  Soft, not overly sweet.  There are no refined sugars used; fruit purees are sweetened with agave nectar.  The toppings range from fruits to nuts.

100_3411

Annie’s Bananies is also an eco-friendly company.  The cups and straws are made from corn; the spoons from potatoes.  All cups, desserts spoons, straws, and napkins are biodegradable and organic products are chosen when available.

100_3412

Annie’s Banannies is sensitive to those customers with nut allergies.  Plenty of Banannies that are vegetarian, vegan and gluten free, are available.

I decided to go with the Bunchberries.  This one is made with fresh strawberries, blueberries, and raspberry puree.  It was gluten free and vegetarian/vegan friendly.

I kept watching how they just put a couple of frozen bananas in the juicer and the transformation was underway. Could not get over it.  It was so good and refreshing.  On a hot day like today it was the best prescription.

100_3413

On my second trip, the Tropical Banannie was ordered.  It had fresh mango, pineapple and coconut flakes.  Again, it was gluten free and vegetarian/vegan friendly. Loved it just as much.

100_3423

So, yes, I am hooked……Hours of operation are:  Mondays – Wednesdays from 3 – 11 p.m. and Thursdays – Sundays 11 – 11 p.m.

Talk to you later….you know I will.

Summer, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, Life Along the Coast

100_2312

“You can comb the sands or lie in the sun.  The choice is yours, as long as it is fun.”

100_2321

Just about 24 hours ago I had gone to check how Rehoboth Beach was doing.  Afterall, Rehoboth Beach is opening, this Memorial Week-End, its doors to all the summer visitors as that season we love gets under way.

100_2319

It is that time of the year when we all get that casual attitude; shorts, t-shirts, and best of all, no schedule.  We cook outdoors, eat outdoors and after the type of winter we have had it is such a pleasure to have great weather this week-end.  Oh, yes, 79 degrees.  Once again, living on the coast is such a treat.

Just as Rehoboth has opened its doors, so have all the beaches in Delaware and Ocean City, Maryland.  What make these towns tick are the residents, the merchants and the food.  Yes, food; pizza, popcorn, ice cream, and french fries.  In Rehoboth Beach you do not have to walk far from the beach to find all these summer “delicacies”, all within a block of each other.

Let me show you a bit of what I am talking about.

Then I decided to take a look at the beach and it was so crowded.  It was a very warm day but the water is still cold so everyone was just under the umbrellas.  It was a sea of umbrellas.

100_2306

I love it!!! It is so good to see everyone down here.  I have not read any statistics as of yet, but it is one of the most crowded Memorials everyone has seen.  Last night, I had to go through Dewey Beach and this is the beach town where the word “party” is taken to the next level.  Non stop beach activities, food and music.  And, at around 11:00 p.m. it was unreal.

Yes, I am, definitely, looking forward to summer.

I will be talking to you later….but please have in mind that Monday is Memorial Day…Remember all of those who have died for our country in order for us to enjoy our freedom….

Hopkins Creamery, Ice Cream, Lewes, Delaware, On-Farm Creamery, Review, Peanut Butter Ripple, Chocolate Banana Walnut, Coconut, Apple Pie, Have I died and Gone to Heaven?

100_1725

“My advice to you is not inquire why or whither, but just enjoy the ice cream while it’s on your plate.”  by Thorton Wilder

Tyler has been telling me to visit Hopkins Creamery; I should have gone sooner.  What a treat!!

100_1711

Many years ago I visited this farm, way before they probably even thought of having an on-farm creamery.  I visited with my youngest son’s class for a field trip.  I have driven on this road many times and always thought of that day so long ago.  Now there is another reason to visit.  You will become a fan, as well.

Hopkins Creamery is in the Green Acres Farm, located at 16186 Dairy Farm Rd., Lewes, Delaware, 19958.  From Lewes, DE 5-Point Intersection on Rt. 1 drive 3 miles straight West on Lewes Georgetown Highway, to traffic light intersection at Dairy Farm Rd….far left corner at cow crossing.

100_1712

Today was not a day that ice cream would come to your mind.  Cold and rainy; but for the ice cream lover that I am there is always a yearning for ice cream.

100_1713

So there I was, talking to the 2 lovely ladies that were selling ice cream at Hopkins Creamery.  I had to ask them if their ice cream was gluten free; but sadly, it is not.  They were not sure if their Italian ice was.

This farm has been owned and operated by the same family for four generations.  Hopkins Farm Creamery opened in 2007.

100_1716

All the ice creams are made less that 48 hours before you actually purchase them.   They have 20 unique flavors.  Need a special order?  Just give them a couple of days notice and your custom-order batches will be ready for pick-up.

100_1717

How about those Classics that you remember as a child?  Yes, they have them; milkshakes, banana splits, sundaes and root beer floats.

Hopkins Creamery also has seasonal flavors available like Pumpkin Pie, Delaware Fruit or Christmas Cake.

100_1715

I decided to get about 4 of their ice creams and asked the ladies to choose them, having in mind that I had never been there.  I wanted an ice-cream tasting in the privacy of my own home.

I was like a kid.  I could not wait to finish my dinner so that I could taste them.

The Ice Cream Tasting:

100_1727

Peanut Butter Ripple – Creamy, just enough chunks of peanut butter and not overly sweet.

Chocolate Banana Walnut – I like bananas just as a fruit only so I was a little hesitant about trying this one.  The banana is incorporated into the chocolate ice cream and the hints of walnuts give it just a slight crunch.  Very good.

Coconut – I had heard about this one.  Definitely coconut.  Delicious, creamy and again just the right sweetness.

Apple Pie – It tasted just like one with tiny pieces of crust incorporated into the creamy ice cream.  I loved that it was not overly sweet also.

Hopkins Farm is open every day from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m.  Telephone is 302-645-7163.  Their website is great; check it out http://www.hopkinsfarmcreamery.com.

I got some of the info. for this post from their website.  On the website, it said:   Recommend Us!!  That won’t be a problem, I just did!!!

Talk to you later….
