Cake Bar, Bakery, Restaurant, Bar, Review, Historic Lewes, Delaware, Come for Dessert, Stay for Dinner, Delaware Beaches

The Historic town of Lewes is getting ready for a celebration on Friday, 4/29.  It is called Fun Friday.  Lewes is celebrating the Royal Wedding.  I wrote a post on the different events throughout this special day.  You can read it by clicking on the month of March, 2011 on the left hand side of this website and then scrolling down to the 9th.

“Friends are the flowers that never fade.”  With that in mind I went to meet Jody on Tuesday in Lewes, Delaware.  I met Jody not long ago; an instant friendship.  She is funny, likes to talk and likes to try new restaurants, as well.

About 3 weeks ago a new restaurant opened in Lewes.  When I first heard about it I thought it was only a bakery.  This new eatery is the perfect combination; a bakery, a restaurant, and a bar.  Sounds like heaven.  Their motto?  “Come for Dessert, Stay for Dinner”.

Cake Bar is located at 115 Second St., Lewes, Delaware 19958.  Tel. 302-645-CAKE (2253).  Website?  www.sugarbakerscakes.com.

What a difference!! As you come into Cake Bar from the Second St. entrance I was pleasantly surprised.  The bakery is at the front.  Nothing like looking at beautiful baked goods in a warm atmosphere to wet your appetite.

Jody and I met Jamie, the owner.  Friendly; like you know her.  She told us that she and her family had been coming to Lewes for a long time and that they owned a home in town.  They were looking for a place to start a business and when the opportunity came they grabbed it.  Right in the center of town.

I like what they have done with the dinning areas.  It was comfortable and a good choice of colors.

But that is not all, Jamie and her family own a very successful business in Catonsville, Maryland.  It is called Sugar Bakers Cakes at 752 Frederick Rd., Baltimore, MD 21228.  The website is www.sugarbakerscake.com. The tel. is 410788-9478.

In business since 1996, this company has made a name for themselves.  Please check their website to see the most amazing cakes for all occasions.  The reviews?  Awesome!!  Appearing in The Today Show and Whose Wedding is It Anyway?.

Their cakes are delivered to Baltimore, Washington, and to the Maryland and Delaware resorts.

You can contact them either in Baltimore or in Lewes for a complimentary wedding cake consultation.  June is around the corner, so I hope brides to be are reading this post.

One thing that caught my attention was that you can call Cake Bar and order dessert trays; 10 person minimum for all trays.  Just cookies, or a selections of brownies, blondies, and mini desserts.  Served in easy to handle, bite size pieces.

The Fancy Feast includes mini eclairs, tiny mousse cups, fresh fruit tarts and dipped strawberries, among others.

You can also order miniature desserts by the dozen.  Just give them a call if you would like more info. Remember their number is 302-645-CAKE.

Jody and I checked the menu.  Cheeses, Maryland Crab Dip, fries with garlic truffle aioli, wings, mac and cheese, shrimp cocktail, steamed shrimp, steamed mussels are a few of their starters.  Then the soups and salads followed.  Sandwiches like Maryland Crabcake, the Delaware Dip, the BLT and G(uacamole) which had thick smoked bacon, roasted and sandwiched with arugula, juice tomato, and creamy guacamole.  The Hot Dog Muffaletta is their take on New Orleans; a big, grilled all-beef dog in a baguette roll, packed with pepperoncini’s, red onion, roasted red pepper, provolone cheese and tapenade.

Some of their entres were shrimp and grits, day boat scallops, fresh daily fish, flat iron steak, meatloaf and mash.  The Delmarva Chicken is a Delaware chicken brined in traditional local marinade of lemon, buttermilk, garlic, olive oil and seasonal herbs and then roasted.  Choice of garlic mash or fresh veggies.

Jody and I decided on a salad.  You know how it is, summer is around the corner, afterall.

Jody chose the CakeBAR Salad which had lettuce, cucumber, tomato, sweet red pepper, red onion, olives, artichoke hearts, and goat cheese Feta, with red wine vinaigrette.  She topped it with grilled shrimp.  It was light and she very much enjoyed it.

I chose the Wedding Salad which had baby greens topped with seasonal fresh berries, toasted pine nuts, crumbled goat cheese and house-smoked duck confit.  Served with a honey citrus vinaigrette.  I loved it.  I think the combinations of all the fruit, the smoked duck and the dressing were a perfect marriage of flavors.

No dessert for us.  Can you imagine?  All homemade and we had the willpower to say no.  Our waiter, which by the way was very good, named them all.  We still resisted.

I wish Jamie and her family the best.  Stop by and say hello.

Note:  Fun Facts from Sugar Bakers Cakes:  They use 75,000 eggs per year and 1.8 million chocolate chips per year.  Yikes!!

Please remember that Cake Bar has happy hour.

Cake Break, Rehoboth Beach, Bakery, Cake Pops, Cupcakes, Bread, Coffee, Vegan, Gluten Free, Nut Free, Delaware Beaches

What a million dollar day!!  If you are here, at the Delaware Beaches, you know what I mean.  Just like everybody else, I am trying to spruce up my house for that time of the season when we enjoy that laissez fare type of living.  I could not believe that the guy that came here yesterday spent all day cleaning the gutters, power washing everything in sight.  My house could be a commercial for Bleach.

Today, I went to one of the favorite bakeries in Rehoboth Beach.  Cake Break is located at 7 South First Street.  The Tel. is 302-260-9264.  Check the website www.facebook.com/cakebreakrehoboth.   Cake Break is a gourmet cupcake company but that is not the only thing they bake.  They also have special orders, cakes, breads, and buns.  Coffee and light breakfast is available, as well.

I had ordered yesterday a special order bread for my husband who has to eat gluten free.  It is a vegan gluten free bread and it is sitting on my counter waiting for him.

I noticed that Cake Break had a few new beer cupcakes.  I took a few pictures of them so you could see them.

The Black-N-Tan Guinness Beer Cake with Baileys Irish Cream Icing and a Chocolate Rock on Top.

Then, there was the Car Bomb which was a Guinness Cake with Baileys Irish Cream Icing and Jameson Chocolate Ganache filling.  They also have a Dogfish cupcake.

They always have the cinnamon buns.

One of the newest additions that attracted my attention were the Cake Pops.  They are made out of vanilla, chocolate or red velvet.  Diane made me eat one; the vanilla.  It was delicious.  These Cape Pops were taken to the Rehoboth Beach Chocolate Festival and they sold hundreds of them.  They are easy to eat because one will satisfy that sweet craving without feeling like you ate the whole cake; perfect for a party or hostess gift.

Open every day, Cake Break is a must stop bake shop in Rehoboth Beach.  Please remember that this bake shop is a nut free facility, as well.

Sweet Sin…Gourmet Desserts & Bakery…All Natural…Gluten Free…Baltimore, Maryland…Review…Delaware Beaches…Ocean City, Maryland

100_0114

Well, I guess one of my New Year’s Resolutions is down the drain.  And, it happened in Baltimore, Maryland.  Boy, it did not take long.

I was supposed to have had a bit of more self control, but how could I?  When you read this post you will see why.

At the beginning of December there was an article in the Baltimore Sun about a gluten free bakery in Charm City.  It gave an interesting story on how it started and how this bakery was now making gluten free cupcakes, as well.  Cupcakes, the “new” rage.100_0108

Monday was my opportunity to visit them and check it out.

Sweet Sin Bakery is located on 123 West 27th St., Baltimore, MD 21218.  The tel. number is 410-464-7211.  You may place orders by calling 410-366-5777.  Fax number is 410-366-5788.  Website is www.glutenfreedesserts.com and the e-mail address is Richard@glutenfreedesserts.com.  They are open Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Richard and Renee D’Souza are the owners, bakers and cooks.  Renee is the person that has a gluten allergy and that is how this whole thing started.  They have been in business for 5 years and even though I had not heard about them until now, they are becoming very popular because of the amazing products they are bringing to people with celiac disease.  You see, when you have this allergy, is not that you can just pop a pill.  The only thing for it is a strict diet.100_0111

So, needless to say, I am very happy to have found them since I have mentioned in the past about my husband’s gluten allergy.100_0110

Besides being a gluten free bakery, they also prepare soups.  In the next few weeks they will also have a full gluten free menu with about 5 or 6 dishes.

The soups they had today were so delicious that I took a quart of each one home.  Have in mind that these soups are made with natural ingredients and no added preservatives.

The first one was a Crab and Clam Chowder and it had crabs, clams, shrimp, tomato, garlic, coconut, green peppers, carrots, green peas, okra, jalapenos, potatoes and onions.  The seafood was so tasty and the broth was rich.  Richard told me that the soup was so natural that not even oil was present.  The broth is all homemade, as well.

The other soup was a vegan soup.  It was a Sweet Potato, Pumpkin Soup and it had sweet potatoes, pumpkin, onions, garlic, rosemary, coconut, basil, tomato, olive oil and cinnamon.  It was fantastic with the perfect seasoning and sweetness.

Veganism, Dairy Free and Casein.  What are these terms?

Veganism is a lifestyle that seeks to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.  They do not consume animal products of any kind.

Dairy Free contains no milk, cheese, butter, cream cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, ice cream, whey, casein or foods that contain those ingredients.

Casein is a protein found in all mammals’ milk.  The most common foods that contain it are milks, ice cream, sour cream, yogurt, butter, lunch meats and cheese.

The cakes looked very appetizing as well as the tarts and pies. I tried the pecan pie and it really was good.100_0113

My sister in law and I sat in the living area of this row house and had our soup and 3 cupcakes.  I have to confess that I had 2 and she had 1/2 of the other and took the rest home.  I really don’t feel guilty, though.

As we sat there chatting people kept coming in.  Some were buying soups/muffins, bake goods and others were talking about gluten free foods.  Nobody rushed us; you can read or have a cup of Zeke’s coffee.100_0112

I really would love this bakery to make products for our beaches.  I think we need it and we have plenty of stores that could carry their goods.

Sweet Sin also bakes sandwich bread.  I had it toasted, with a little bit of butter and it had good taste, was dense and it held well.

I left this great bakery with a bunch of goodies like, pecan tart, which is casein, dairy and soy free, double chocolate mousse cake, with no added preservatives, a key lime tart, also casein, dairy and soy free, lemon meringue, chocolate-raspberry truffle, chocolate dipped cheese cake and chocolate caramel tart.

Then, I bought an assortment of cupcakes and cookies, as well.

If you get the opportunity to visit Sweet Sin in Baltimore, you will find out that they have something unique, besides their winning disposition.  Nobody knows better what people with food allergies go through than the owners of this bakery.  They have not compromised flavor as they developed the recipes that will make you want to come back for more.

Now you know why my New Year’s Resolution was on hold for the day.  And, even though this post was not from any of my beach towns, it was definitely worth writing about.

Note:  The cupcakes have eggs.  Most of their products are made with only non-hydrogenated fats, including olive oil and organic palm oil shortening.
