National Coffee Day, New Moon Bakery, Cafe, Espresso Bar, Gluten Free, Nederland, Colorado, Southwest of Boulder

dscn6773

Happy National Coffee Day!  Get your caffeine and celebrate!!  Our favorite coffee shops are offering deals throughout the day; McDonalds, Dunkin’ Donuts, 7-Eleven, Krispy Kreme among the most popular.

dscn6769

If I had my choice I would go to the New Moon Bakery.  Unfortunately, that is not going to be the case, since it is located in the town of Nederland, Colorado, which dates to the 1800’s.  I am at the Delaware Beaches…too far!!

dscn6788

The town is located southwest of Boulder, near the Continental Divide and the Baker Meadow Reservoir.

It is also the closest town to the ski resort; Eldora.

When visiting Colorado in August with my friend, Cindi, we decided that this was the best coffee we had had in a long time.

We ordered the Breve.  Breve is short for Espresso Breve.  It is espresso with 1/2 & 1/2.  The coffee and boiled milk; poured at the same time into a cup.  A rich and bold cup of coffee is what it is!!

dscn6774

New Moon Bakery has been in Nederland since 2009, at 1 West 1st Street.  Tel. 303-258-3569  Website?  http://www.newmoonbakery.com.

dscn6772

Besides being a coffee and espresso bar, it offers plenty more.  A wide assortment of gluten free baked goods are on the menu.

dscn6771

So…if you are visiting the city of Boulder, it will be worth it to stop in this quaint bakery where everything is homemade every day of the week.

Have a great day!!

Eating in…Milton, Delaware, The Vintage Cafe, Breakfast, Lunch, Open Tuesday through Saturday, Restaurant, Review

dscn3390

This post came about because 2 Facebook friends decided to meet face to face.  The town of Milton, Delaware, was our choice.  Just in case you do not know, the historic town of Milton is about 20 to 25 minutes north of Rehoboth Beach.

Small businesses and historic homes is what you will find in Milton.  It is located at the head of the Broadkill River, which feeds into the Delaware Bay.  Because of its location, it was an ideal place for shipbuilding in the old days.

dscn3394

Historic Milton is, really, set in a rural setting.  The pace?  Well, I think you would find it to be quiet and leisurely; definitely, small town America.

dscn3398

Are you a history buff?  “Milton is the birthplace of 5 governors, a town divided in allegiance during the Civil War, house to many officers who participated in the War of 1812, and rich in agricultural and political facts.”

Button making?  Large mother of pearl shells were once shipped to Milton from the South Pacific.  The button blanks were cut and polished and then shipped to the northeast for more decoration and use on garments of all kinds.

If you like ice cream, Milton is the home of King’s Ice Cream with locations in Milton and Lewes.

You can find these facts and more at www.historicmilton.com.

When Kathy told me that The Vintage Cafe would be a good spot for our meeting, I was excited to check another place.  The Vintage Cafe is located at 113 Union Street, Milton DE 19968.  Tel. 302-684-3480.  Email vintagecafemilton@gmail.com.  The owner is Ami Rae.

dscn3399

The Cafe opens Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m.  If you are coming for breakfast you will find delectable offerings, including muffins, scones, and croissants.  Of course, coffees, teas, espresso, capuccinos and lattes.

The baked goods are fresh and the soups are homemade.  You can eat in, take out, and if you have an event, they can event cater.

The Cafe also carries gluten free baked goods, but it would be best to call them and see what’s available.

A PopStand! CakePop is a cake dipped in candy coating on a stick.  Please call Ami Rae, who is the CakePop Pro at 302-684-3480.  These can make the perfect gift, fun for parties, and a conversation piece for weddings.  Flavors and colors can be customized, as well.

dscn3389

Kathy and I greeted each other and proceeded to sit down and take a look at the menu.  There is a board with the daily specials.

dscn3391

And, this is what we had:

Kathy had Beans in the Garden, which was spinach, tomato, black beans, cheddar and brown rice, with red pepper aioli in a tortilla.  She thought it was delicious.  Kathy stops frequently at the Cafe when coming through Milton.

dscn3386

I decided on The Farmer.  I thought the combination of country ham with cheddar, green apple and sweet hot mustard on a ciabatta roll made an interesting combination.  It did not disappoint; it was perfect.

dscn3385

We decided that our sandwiches were enough.  The portions were a good size so we took half of them home.  By the way, the prices are very reasonable, the service was good and offered with a friendly smile.

Lunch with a new friend, in a historic town, at The Vintage Cafe, made for a great afternoon.

Talk to you later…

Sweet Sin, Gluten Free, Cafe, Meet 27, American Bistro, Restaurant, Baltimore, Maryland, A Gluten Free Restaurant?, You Got it!, Charm City’s Newest

Names like German Chocolate, Chocolate Peppermit, Cookies & Cream, Chocolate Caramel, Vanilla Birthday Cake…and Vegan Chocolate Capuccino, Vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter…These were only in the dreams of some that need to follow a gluten free diet, among other diets.

My first visit to Sweet Sin Cafe was on January 5, 2010.  I wrote a post on that day and you can see it by just clicking on the left hand side of this blog on the month of January, 2010 and scrolling down to the 5th.  I bought all kinds of breads, cookies and cupcakes on that visit.

img_4214

Sweet Sin Cafe is located in the Charles Village/Remington neighborhoods of Baltimore.  The exact address is 123 West 27th St., Baltimore, MD.  The tel. is 410-464-7211.  The website? www.sweetsinbakery.com.  The owners are Richard and Renee D’Souza.  E-mail is richard@glutenfreedesserts.com.

img_4216

It is a very simple cafe in a row house.  A casual place, bring your laptop, have just a coffee and a baked good, a full breakfast or lunch like we did.  There is a board showing the daily temptations.

img_4223

Since my visit they have opened the sister restaurant to Sweet Sin Cafe.  Right next door.  Meet 27, American Bistro.  It is Charm’s City’s newest, full-fledge gluten free restaurant.  That address is 127 West 27th Street, Baltimore, MD 21218.  Tel. 410-585-8121.  It is open Mondays through Thursdays from 5 until 10 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 5 until 11 p.m. and Sundays from 5 until 10 p.m.

Visiting the Cafe with Susie and now with John, the one with celiac, I can tell you that it was music to my ears to hear them say “Our menu can accommodate gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, and soy-free diets”.

All natural ingredients; some dairy free, soy free, casein free.  Soups like Cream of Mushroom, Spinach Mulligatuny, Chicken and Rice, Vegetarian Chili, Shrimp Chowder, Clam Chowder, Thai Chicken and Vegetable Soup are dairy free.

The day I visited was for lunch, therefore, I have not tried Meet 27 yet.  I believe that Meet 27’s liquour license is in the works.  Meet 27 has appetizers, salads, entrees like Chili Paneer, Catch of the Day, New York Strip Steak, Peppercorn Beef, Vindaloo Pork, Lamb Chops, Veggie Platter and different burger options all made with local and organic dry-aged beef. Their desserts are all house made and some of those options were: Chocolate Mousse with orange sauce and fresh berries (vegan and gluten free), Coconut Lime Parfait on a meringue cookie with coconut creme anglaise (dairy and gluten free) and Black Forest Cake with cherry sauce (gluten free).

We were starving and this is what we had:

The Chicken Tacos – a generous portion and Susie said they were delicious.

img_4229

Goat Curry – John loves goat.  Hey, he likes it.  Actually, I do too.  Maybe my PR roots of “cabrito”.  He accompanied the goat curry with cabbage with peas and carrots and basmati rice with vegetables.  Enjoyed it!!

img_4230

Penang Chicken with Chana Masala, which were chickpeas in Masala sauce.  Added plantains and black beans with salsa and yogurt and what a lunch I had!!  The portion was huge for lunch, but it was so good; the right amount of spice.  The color and aroma were to die for.

img_4232

I like to try different things and I had an Organic Raw Kombucha as my drink.  It was good but I had to take a few sips before I acquired the taste for it.  You would have to decide.  You are either going to like it or hate it.

img_4233

Even with all that food we ordered cupcakes.  Sweet Sin is also a complete bakery.  You can find their offerings at stores like Wegman’s, Whole Foods and Roots Market.  Have a Special Occasion?  Visit the above mentioned website for more info.

We ordered a Key Lime Cupcake, and a Carrot Cake Cupcake.  Both were good but we all decided we liked the carrot cake better.

img_4234

img_4235

I love that the flavors are not compromised.  Whether you have an allergy or not the food is delicious.  I think Richard and his wife Renee, who has to eat gluten free, are doing a great job.  I hope they keep it that way.

Sweet Sin Cafe has ready to go baked goods and foods.  All you have to do is stop by.

Sweet Christine’s, Gluten Free Confections, Bakery, All Natural, On-Line, Kennett Square, PA

158

I came across this company at the Dover Downs Casino and Hotel in Dover, DE.  I will tell you about that later.  I had not heard about this company.  First I asked if it was someone in the hotel making these gluten free brownies.  That’s all they had; the chocolate brownies.  They thought that it was the wife of an employee that had this business.  I still don’t know if that was true or not.

I bought one of the brownies and took some pictures.  Always thinking of a possible post for my website.

 162

I have mentioned before that for the past couple of years, everything cooked in my house is glute- free.  I guess I could say my husband was lucky to be diagnosed at this point in his life when so many people are being diagnosed and the food industry is exploding with gluten-free products; some better than others.

Sweet Christine’s is located at 132 West St., Kennett Square, PA, 19348.  Website is www.sweetchristinesglutenfree.com.   Hours of operation are Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The thing is that once I got on Sweet Christine’s website I came to realize that this is not a small operation.  After being diagnosed years ago, and eating tasteless confections, she decided to make her own.  Word spread and the rest is history.  Sweet Christine’s sells to retailers, and wholesalers.  You can find her confections, in small shops, and in big time grocery stores.

All baked goods are 100% homemade.  They are natural, gluten-free, wheat-free and nothing in them is artificial.  Sweet Christine’s makes cookies, muffins, breads, cakes, and the company ships all over the United States.  They can take orders for any of your celebrations; birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc.  For these special orders, please give them a call.

At the Delaware Beaches you can find these baked goods at Nourish, 373 Henlopen Junction, Rehoboth Beach, 302-227-6282 and at Good Earth Market, Rt. 26, a few miles west of Bethany Beach, 302-537-7100.

I would suggest you visit www.sweetchristinesglutenfree.com because besides seeing all the products this company has to offer, there is also so much information for people that have been diagnosed with a gluten allergy.  Very informative and worth checking.

I have not visited Sweet Christine’s.  This post came about because of the brownie I bought.  After sampling the brownie, I wrote Sweet Christine’s an e-mail.  I thought the brownie was so good; dense and sweet.  I warmed it up before eating it. I mentioned that it would be so nice to have baked goods gluten free and sugar free.  20% of diabetics will be diagnosed with celiac disease.

P.S.  I will visit Sweet Christine’s and you will be the first to know.  It is a bit of a drive from the Delaware Beaches, but I think it would be worth it.

Have a great day!!
