Destination? Delaware Beaches, What’s Going On?, Events, Activities, Southern Delaware, Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island…Waiting for Summer!!

dscn4206

On March 19, 1891 it was first called Cape Henlopen City.  In 1893, the name was formally changed to Rehoboth.  Since then, Rehoboth Beach has been welcoming thousands of visitors not just in the summer, but year round.  It is a destination for many, and for a lot of us, it is also home.  Living at the beach is great, and, believe me, I do not take it for granted.

The Quiet Resorts, Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island, Delaware Beaches, What’s Going On? Activities, Events and Even a Jazz Funeral to Attend, Bethany Beach Buries the Summer of 2012 in a Most Unique Way, It will be Gone, but, Not Forgotten

dscn5571

Many years ago, I lived in Bethany Beach.  At the end of the Labor Day Week-End, we would watch, literally, how everyone would pack up and leave.  The Delaware Beaches would close down for the season.  During those times, Bethany did not have a pharmacy.  It only had one grocery store.  That was hard since I like to go to the grocery store every day.  I never know what I want to eat.  Bethany was also a “dry town”.  Imagine that.  When my parents would come to visit, they could not believe it.

img_3339

It does not look that quiet now, and as the Delaware Beaches roll into their Second Season…check What’s Going On.

img_3330

Until 9/16 – Bethany Beach Yoga at Sunrise from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m.  Every day, except Thursday.  There is a drop in fee of $10.  Check Bethany Beach Yoga at http://www.bethanybeachyoga.org.  Tel. 302-448-0563.  Just bring a towel or mat.

As I look back, I also remember one event that we would enjoy so much.  I would run to downtown Bethany, with my friend, Sharon.  Sometimes, my parents would be here visiting and they would tag along.

Monday, 9/3 – Get Ready For a Funeral!!  Bethany’s way, anyway.  Criers, Mourners; all dressed in black.  You can join in.  You are expected to.  Started by Moss Wagner all those years ago, it was a way to “bury” the summer in a unique way.  It used to be a handful of residents and their families.  Now, it is an Event!!

The Summer of 2012 will be gone but not forgotten.  The Jazz Funeral will begin at 5:30 p.m., at the north end of the Bethany Beach Boardwalk.  There will be 3 Jazz Bands; the Dixie Cats, the Downtown Band, and the Jazz Funeral Irregulars.  The mourners will transport the casket with the Summer of 2012 inside. In a Louisiana type jazz celebration, it will be taken to its final resting place; The Bandstand.

After the Funeral, probably after 6:00 p.m. there will be a Celebratory Swim by the Bethany Beach Lifeguards.  This event was much different in many years past; disrobing and swimming in the buff!!  That’s how it was!!

Saturday, 9/8 – The 5th Annual Joshua M. Freeman Foundation Golf Tournament, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Fundraising Event.  Bayside Resort Golf Club.  A fun filled day of celebrating the art of golf and the legacy of Josh Freeman.  $3,000 per foursome.  Fee includes admittance to the Arts by the Sea party, held after the tournament at The Cove at Bayside Resort Golf Club.  For more info., please contact Lucinda Williams, Development Director at lucinda@freemanfoundation.org. or call 302-436-6241.  Please visit http://www.freemanfoundation.org.

Justin’s Beach House, The Justin W. Jennings Foundation, Bethany Beach, Contractors for a Cause, Delaware Beaches, A Time and Place of Joy and Peace for Families with Cancer

I have to start by saying that I don’t know the Jennings family.  But, I had seen this house going up on Rt. 26 in Bethany Beach.  For many years I used to live, practically, across the street from where Justin’s Beach House is located.

 img_3941

The blue Adirondack chair?  I thought somebody liked these laid back chairs as much as I did.  Justin’s Beach House is about 1/2 mile from the center of town and the beach.

I was told that I should stop and see this house.  Its story is very well expressed in their website; http://www.justinjennings.org   It is Justin’s story; the developing of the brain cancer that ultimately would claim his young life.  And, the parents who sprung into action, by starting The Justin W. Jennings Foundation.

img_3940

Bethany Beach is known as a quiet resort.  Also known to be a family oriented coastal town.  I cannot imagine a better place to have a home for families with cancer where they can spend time together in peace.  Getting away from it all.

img_3946

This house could not have taken place without the tremendous help of Contractors for a Cause.  This organization is made up of local contractors who want to give back to the community that support them.  They are based in the Bethany Beach and Ocean View area.

img_3939

If you would like to learn more about what they do, please visit http://www.contractorsforacause.org.

There are some events already in the calendar for 2011.  Check http://www.justinjennings.org.

Saturday, May 28th is the Justin’s Beach House Memorial 5k Run – Walk in Bethany Beach.  You can get all the information for this event on the above mentioned website.

Wednesday, June 8th – Ravens Roost Annual Golf Tournament at Ocean City Golf & Country Club.  $100 will get you the cart and dinner. Cash bar will be available, as well.  Shotgun is at 1:00 p.m.  If you do not play golf but would like to attend, then, the cost would be $30.  Again, please visit the website for all pertinent information.

The website is very informative.  You will find the application process and the calendar of available dates for Justin’s Beach House.  You can meet the Board, read the history and also check the donation information.

Thank you to Justin’s family who in their grief started this foundation so that in his name they could help others.

Please note that the first guests at Justin’s Beach House welcomed 2011 in this beautiful home.

Talk to you later….

Good Earth Market, Organic Farm, Clarksville, Delaware, Authentic, Sustainable, Events, Farm to Table Dinners…Delaware Beaches

Months ago I was going to attend a gluten free cooking class at Good Earth Market.  I believe that one of those “nor’ easters” hit the beaches and that particular class was canceled.  Needless to say, I had never been there but I knew where it was located.

img_3490

Let me just give the info. of where you can find them and then we will get to the best part of the post.  It is located at 31806 Good Earth Lane, Rt., 26 on Atlantic Ave., which is 4 1/2 miles west of Bethany Beach.  The town is Clarksville, Delaware 19970.  The tel. 302-537-7100.  The website?  www.goodearthmarket.com.   On Facebook, of course.  Befriend them on FB because they have more to offer besides what you will find on the website.

img_3489

The owners are Susan and David Ryan.  This is their store.  The farm?  Well, it is also their home.  They open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.  On Sundays they are open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

img_3496

When I arrived on Monday, Susan was there.  She was very gracious and looked very rested even though she had just come from France.  I introduced myself and she told me to feel free to take pictures and then she would take me out to the farm which was in back of the store.

The store is very well stocked and looks like a grocery store with shelves and freezers.  There is a fresh dairy case and a non-dairy case.

img_3492

img_3505

Good Earth has organic products from teas, coffees to all natural beauty products; hand creams and body oils. Vitamins and healthy essentials, as well.

img_3484

img_3482

There is a huge selection of gluten free grocery and frozen foods.  I was particularly interested on the gluten free products since we eat gluten free in my home.

img_3501

img_3503

Every Friday and Saturday there is a delivery of Kogler’s Old World Artisan Breads.

img_3498

You will find cut flowers in season and herbs are cut to order.

The farm is 100% organic and to be so it was certified by the USDA.  Many of the items are grown right on the farm.

img_3497

img_3487img_3507

Susan took me to the back of the farm.  There we found Ingrid, the Master Gardener busy at work.  In the greenhouse, there were 7,000 heirloom tomatoes to be planted.  Good Earth Market is known for their heirloom tomatoes.  They are sold at the Farmers Markets in Lewes, Georgetown, Bethany and Fenwick Island.  Besides the tomato plants there were also all kinds of fragrant herbs getting ready, as well.

img_3495
