Meeting the appetite of all things local.  That’s what you will find up and down the Delmarva Peninsula as Farmers’ Markets gain popularity.  I decided to visit late in the afternoon the Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market.  It opens at Noon until 4 p.m. every Tuesday; rain or shine.  This was the second Tuesday and it was sunny!!

dscn3206

The Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market is located at Grove Park, behind the Visitor’s Center and the Rehoboth Beach Chamber of Commerce, by the round-about.  Website?  http://www.rbfarmersmarket.com.

A little music and very interesting vendors.  These are some of the ones that caught my attention!!

ROOT GOURMET – Only about a year old and located at 19724 Coastal Highway.  Gourmet on the Go.  A sister establishment of Nage.  Don’t want to cook or have unexpected guests?  Give them a call or go on their website at http://www.rootgourmet.com.  You can either order for take out or just sit down and enjoy it in-house.  At the market, they offer a special menu…plenty of tastings, as well.

HABANERA FARM –  They are a guest of the Rehoboth Farmers’ Market, which means that they are not there every single Tuesday. This is Maryland’s first herbal tea grower and certified processor.  It is a medicinal herb and plant farm and retreat center on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, just outside Whitehaven near the Wicomico River.  More than 30 medicinal herbs offer a possibility for a relaxed stroll.  It sits on 21 acres. It also has a 7 Path Labyrinth!

dscn3222

Habanera Farm is open for groups and will work with your group or organization to create that special program.  They are also experienced, entertaining speakers, available to visit your location.  On June 1st from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Habanera Farm will be hosting their 3rd Annual Open House and Herb Day Celebration.  They are inviting the public to go out and wander through their herb gardens, see their working medicinal plant farm and antioxidant orchard, enjoy a sampling of delicious, locally blended herbal teas, and have a great day.  Please check out their website http://www.habanerafarm.com.  Like them on Facebook.

Cold Soup, A “Liquid Salad”, Too Hot to Cook, Gazpacho is the best Summer Soup, Recipe, Easy, Gluten Free

A scorcher, that’s for sure!!  101 degrees at the Delaware Beaches.  I am not kidding when I tell you that a Gazpacho would be the perfect hot summer meal.

 dscn5768

I was looking for some local vine ripe tomatoes; they burst with flavor.  Our local tomatoes, at the Delaware Beaches, are coming in and one of the first to have them is Fifer Orchards.  Even though their farm is in Camden-Wyoming, they do have a Fresh Market located on Rt. 1 North at the corner of Cullen Street, in Dewey Beach.   They looked gorgeous!!

dscn5767

I feel that a Gazpacho is a liquid salad.  It is so refreshing and it takes very little time to make.  The ingredients are found most everywhere.

The Gazpacho is typically Spanish but it certainly has traveled the globe. Its origin is the South of Spain.  From Andalusia, which is in the southernmost province of Spain.

We all have a variation of this delicious soup; mine is no different.  I sort of borrowed the recipe from a friend, Sherrie.  Then, I made it my own.

The garnish of jumbo Maryland lump crabmeat rolled on Old Bay seasoning, definitely says Southern Delaware!!  Hope you like it.

dscn5777

Summer Gazpacho

3 ripe tomatoes (depending on the size you might need 4)

1 cucumber, peeled and diced

1/2 green pepper, diced

1/2 sweet onion, diced

1 cup Low Sodium V-8 Juice

2 tablespoons Olive Oil

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar (I used Pompeian red wine vinegar.)

A couple dashes of Tabasco (or maybe more)

2 teaspoons of Worcestershire Sauce

Salt (optional)

Pepper to taste

Jumbo lump crabmeat rolled on Old Bay Seasoning (My crabmeat was from Jimmy Lynn’s Seafood on 18226 Coastal Highway, Lewes, DE)

Garnish:  Diced vegetables; peppers, all colors, tomatoes, avocado, green onions, cilantro

dscn5771

Place all ingredients in the blender, except the crabmeat.

Cover and blend until smooth.

Adjust seasonings.

Chill

Garnish, serve and enjoy!!

dscn5772

This recipe serves 4.  It can easily be doubled; just do it in batches.

Note:  In many recipes, a slice of day old bread is also added.  I have done it in the past but not this time.  Please use a gluten free bread if you decide to do so, and have to follow a gluten free diet.

This gazpacho can be just your meal but it can also be the start of a great summer dinner, as well.  Just use small bowls; it will serve about 6 people then.

Stay cool!!

Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market, Rehoboth Beach, Vendors, Delaware Beaches, 5th Season, Tuesdays, Noon – 4:00 p.m., Rain or Shine, Delaware Beaches

I strolled yesterday, just like everyone else through the tent lined street in Grove Park.  This is the home for the Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market who is celebrating its 5th season.  And, every Tuesday, rain or shine, from Noon until 4:00 p.m. you will find the locals, residents and visitors purchasing, organic produce, food, flowers, baked goods and at times live entertainment, as well.  On a beautiful day like yesterday, it was priceless.

img_3657

Grove Park is a wooded corner in Rehoboth that is located adjacent to the Lighthouse Circle, right by the roundabout.  It has a Tot Lot and benches to sit and rest or get a little shade when the summer weather heats up.

The Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market has a website; http://www.rbfarmersmarket.com.

There is free parking available on Henlopen Avenue, Columbia Avenue and Sussex St. and Felton Street.  Otherwise, you will have to feed the meter in a few weeks.

This is the second week for the Farmers’ Market.  Other farmers’ markets at the beaches are starting pretty soon.

Just like the traditional “mercados” found in cities throughout the world, growers sell their produce directly to the public.  You can even have lunch at the Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market.  Some vendors have pick up delicacies.  For example, Yolanda from Mariachi which is located at Wilmington Ave. had Arroz con Pollo, Papusas, Tamales among other things.  Mariachi’s website is www.mariachirehobothde.com.

img_3692

Shopping at farmers’ markets has become a weekly ritual for a lot of us that want to have fresh and local produce.  It is great to engage in conversation with some of the farmers.

The Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market has about 25 vendors.  To see the complete list, please visit www.rbfarmersmarket.com/vendors.html.   There are a few new ones but all the old standbys are there, as well.
