Movies offer us a ticket into another world.  You can cry, scream, cheer, or maybe all of it at once.  It is cheap therapy for a couple of hours.  Better than sitting home watching the political circus 24/7.

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is located in beautiful Rehoboth Beach, Delaware at 107 Truitt Avenue.  Tel. 302-645-9095.  Its mission is to promote cinematic arts and provide education and cultural enrichment.  It is very active and throughout the year it offers residents that ticket to another world mentioned above.  For more information, trailers, etc. etc. please visit http://www.rehobothfilm.com.

So, What’s Going On?

The Winding Stream features original Carter Family recordings but also showcases interpretrations of their songs as performed by such legends as John Prine, George Jones, Kris Kristofferson, and Sheryl Crow.  It is told through interviews with family and friends who knew them best.   This film has won numerous awards.  It will run 90 minutes.  A post film discussion will be led by George Spicer, who currently serves as secretary of the Eastern Shore Bluegrass Association.  The Eastern Shore Bluegrass Association hosts concerts the second Sunday of each month in Marydel, Delaware.   This film will take place at Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive, #2, Dartmouth Plaza, Lewes.  This location is behind Wawa in Lewes.  Admission is $8 for members and $10 for non-members.  You can visit the above mentioned website and purchase tickets online, or by calling 302-645-9095 ext. 1.  Online reservations will close on Thursday, the 7th at Noon.  Please note that reservations made are non-refundable.

ORANGES AND SUNSHINE – Friday, 4/8 at 7 p.m. – This is a British film and it is a heart-wrenching fact-base drama, when social worker Margaret Humphreys (Emily Watson) uncovers the horrific scandal of forced child migration from the UK.  Between the 1940’s and ’50s, and as recently as 1967, nearly 130,000 British children, some orphaned and some forcibly removed from their homes, were packed into ships and sent to Australia.  They were told their parents were dead and instead of oranges and sunshine, a paradise offered to them, they were forced into hard labor and sometimes abuse….It runs 105 minutes and it is Rated R.  A post film discussion will be led by Perrin Smith.  He is a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in working with children and their families.

DEAR FRANKIE –  Saturday, 4/9 at 3 p.m. – This is a Scottish drama, with many awards won including a 15 minute standing ovation when it was screened at the Cannes Film Festival.  Dear Frankie is a working class fairy tale and it is the story of 9 year old Frankie and his mother Lizzie.  He remembers nothing of the abuse he suffered as a child and his mother is determined to keep it that way.    Through a Glasgow post office box he maintains a regular correspondence with someone he believes is his father.  The letters, secretely authored by Lizzie, detail seafaring adventures from around the globe.  But she cannot maintain this charade forever and torn between telling the truth and protecting her son, Lizzie gets more than she bargained for when she hires a handsome stranger to play the role of a lifetime.  This simple story is rich with precise observation and it tugs at the heartstrings withouth being maudlin or manipulative….It runs for 105 minutes and is Rated PG 13.  The post film discussion will be led by Suzanne Murphy, Suzanne Thurman, and Joe-Anne Corwin.  Suzanne Murphy is a licensed clinical social worker who has a PHD in social welfare.  Suzanne Thurman is the director of the MERR Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to the rescue efforts of stranded marine life.  Joe-Anne Corwin was a professor of psychology at the Marine Maritime Acade in Castine, Main.

STORIES WE TELL – Sunday, 4/10 at 1:30 p.m.  This is a Canadian documentary.  Oscar nominated writer/director Sarah Polley is both filmmaker and detective as she investigates the secrets kept by a family of storytellers.  This documentary explores the elusive nature of truth and memory, and how our narratives shape and define us.   This documentary is Rated PG 13. A post film discussion will be led by Carolyn Walter and Suzanne Thurman.  Carolyn Walter is a PHD, LCSW, Professor Emerita, Center for Social Work Education, Widener University and an Adjunct Professor at Univ. of PA, School of Social Work.  Her area of specialty is grief, loss and transformation.  Suzanne Thurman is the director of the MERR Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to the rescue efforts of stranded marine life.

Wednesday, April 13th at 4 p.m. – THE SELFISH GIANT, was an official selection of the Cannes Film Festival in 2013.  It is a gripping story about 13 year old best friends, Arbor and Swifty.  During a forced absence from school, the boys begin working for a dubious scrap dealer selling discarded wire to scrap yards.  Their hard works pays off in the beginning but as Arbor becomes increasingly greedy, tensions build leading to a tragic event that transforms them all.  This is a British drama set against the backdrop of post industrial northern England.

This screening is part of the monthly “Read a Movie” series in which members read a little-known short story in advance of the screening, then gather to share their thoughts about how well, or not so well the story expanded to the big screen.  On the evening of the screening attendees can receive 15% off Dos Locos’ regular priced dinner entrees.

Admission is $3 for members, (current members need to present their membership card).  $5 for future members.  Location? Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza, behind the Lewes’ Wawa.

So where were you on such a beautiful day in Rehoboth Beach?  I decided to take a look at this award-winning coastal town late in the day….the lighting is so much nicer.

The mysterious WWII Towers were not as clear today.  It was a bit foggy towards the northern part of the beach by Whiskey Beach.

The ocean looked beautiful and this fisherman, was having a ball!!

On the south side of the Boardwalk, it was quiet…..I like it that way.

Perfect night for Stonegrilling at Dos Locos, Restaurant, Rehoboth Beach, Gluten Free Menu, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

Once again the Delaware Beaches get a break from all the crazy weather going around us.  Just rain and wind here…a classic n’or easter!!

Love going to Dos Locos, located at 208 Rehoboth Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227-3353.  Website?  http://www.doslocos.com. Lots of times we happen to go on a Thursday.  They have their stonegrilling specials on that night.  It is a full serving.  Dos Locos also has a full bar.  It is comfortable, casual, and very reasonable.  And, they open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

They do have an extensive menu.  Besides the stonegrills, they also have fajitas, tacos, enchiladas, burritos, etc. etc.  Great desserts, as well.

We went with friends and nothing is better than sharing a meal with those who make you laugh.  These 2 are those types of friends.  Our meals are always a happy time.

One of them started with a frozen Margarita.  I think she always requests it.  Not from a mix; the real deal.

dscn1170

Alex, our server, he knows us well.  And, he takes good care of us.  Always offering suggestions that are on target.

Grilling on a hot stone, is dry cooking.  It sears and locks the flavors and juices of whatever you are cooking.  When the stone arrives at your table, it is over 700 degrees.  So, watch out if you have children around you.  It will stay hot for the longest time.  The food is never burned and only rubs and condiments are used; served on the side.

On this particular night one of our friends decided to try the lobster.  It was a very good size and it did look beautiful.  Besides the rubs, she ordered melted butter.  Of course!!

dscn1174

Another friend decided on lobster and filet…he loved it!

dscn1173

My husband decided on the scallops.  Cooking them on the stone is great.

dscn1172

I only wanted their hot, shredded duck tacos; hard shell.  I do love those!!

dscn1176

And, I have to thank Alex for bringing that decadent dessert to our table.  It was a molten chocolate cake; dense, warm, and full of flavor….ice cream and whipped cream!! Nice.

dscn1178

Please note that Dos Locos offers Gluten Free Menus!  Also, please check their website, above mentioned….they are ready for Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday.  They also have a Friday Lenten Menu.

Have a good week-end!!  Talk to you later.

Stonegrilling, Dos Locos, Rehoboth Beach, Restaurant, Mexican Cuisine, Review, Delaware Beaches…A Gluten Free Menu? You bet!

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware is a strong little coastal town.  To take a storm they way it did, took guts.  With the help of the town and the community, it almost looks like it just went through a bad rainy day, for the most part.

Addy, my dog, kept looking out.  Not sure if for squirrels; she hates them.  Or, she was wondering if the nightmare of an evening was over yet.

dscn9367

Walking through my neighborhood with Addy, I found plenty of leaves; the ground was soaked.  There are neighborhoods in Rehoboth Beach where only residents can go in.  Clean up is going fast.

dscn9364

Last Friday I bought some pumpkins for the front of the house.  I stacked a smaller pumpkin on top of a larger one.  Then arranged the others the best way I could.  Once the storm hit I thought they would be taking off like projectiles.  Guess what?  All that wind and rain, and they did not move.  Here is the picture.  They are exactly the way I had arranged them.

dscn9361

I have a guest staying overnight.  He is my cousin.  He is on his way to Southern New Jersey to work for FEMA.  Months of cases to be processed.  So, not having had the pleasure of stonegrilling, Dos Locos was our choice for the evening.

dscn8881

Dos Locos is a very casual and fun restaurant located at 208 Rehoboth Avenue.  Tel. 302-227-3353.  Website?  http://www.doslocos.com.  It is also a locals favorite in downtown Rehoboth Beach.  A festive atmosphere, for sure.  The restaurant has a gluten free menu, as well.

But, tonight, Rehoboth Beach, was quiet.  You could not tell that a hurricane had just passed us by.  Last Sunday, Dos Locos made the news when it caught the attention of a few, with its “No Candy 4 Sandy”.

dscn9325

A few drinks were ordered.

dscn9369

The warm chips and salsa arrived at our table.

dscn8877

And then, the stonegrilling began.  The stone are heated to over 750 degrees. They are, definitely, hot and will stay hot.

Scallops

dscn8879

Blanco & Negro Sesame Encrusted Ahi Tuna

dscn8878

My choice was the Sauteed Pulled Duck Fajitas….I really do like them.  Full of flavor.  Actually, a pretty large portion.

dscn9370

And, I forgot to take a picture of the pumpkin flan….it was gone in not time.

Note:  Dos Locos offers daily features, like a $5 weekday Mexican lunch.  Every day there is a special going on.  Tomorrow, Wednesday, is $5 off any Fajita and $5 House Lime Margaritas.  Thursday, which is a favorite in my household, is the $10 Stonegrill Seafood plus side, half-priced bottles of White Wine, and $2 off any glass of White Wine….check the website to find what else is going on.

And to you, Dos Locos….thanks so much for such an attentive service.  Great talking to you.

Dos Locos, Rehoboth Beach, Stonegrilling, Restaurant, Review, Thursdays $10 Stonegrill Seafood Night, Delaware Beaches

img_2666

This was not my first time at Dos Locos and it won’t be by last.  The evening started by taking 2 friends to enjoy a dinner out in downtown Rehoboth Beach.

I chose Dos Locos because it is a casual restaurant and my husband was dying for stonegrilled scallops.

As we arrived my friend said to her husband “let me sit across from Gloria…we are going to talk about fashion and jewelry….haha.  That set the tone for laughter and a really fun meal to be enjoyed with close friends.

Dos Locos is located at 208 Rehoboth Avenue.  Tel. 302-227-3353.  Website? www.doslocos.com.  The restaurant has a full size bar on one side and booths and tables on another.  Even a private room is available for parties.

Alex was our server and he was really so attentive, as usual.  Gosh we talked and talked….chips and salsa always at the table.

img_2669

A few shots of tequila, a martini, and a margarita came to the table.  The Margarita was freshly made; no mix there.  It went so smoothly that another had to be ordered.

dscn1673

Some ordered from the stonegrill menu.  Stonegrilling is very social.  A stone is brought to your table and it is heated at about 700 degrees.  You will be doing the cooking.  All meat or seafood arrives raw. You can personalize it by cooking it rare, medium or well.  When you cook on these stones the food is seared with all the natural juices inside.  Very healthy; no oils and fats are included; just rubs and dipping sauces.  All dishes came with a salad or chef’s side.

The Scallops.

dscn1677

The Scallops and Steak.

dscn1678

Another entree was the Steak Quesadilla which was grilled steak with melted cheese and a choice of Vallarta sauce which is a tomato sauce or the Santa Fe with jalapenos.  She ordered the Santa Fe….Que bueno!!

dscn1676

I decided on Steak Fajitas.  I love making my own.  Temperature?  Medium rare.  It was a good size entre and it really hit the spot.  Delicioso!!

dscn1675

As I looked at the table I thought it looked fun.  Rice, beans, salsa, and dips!!  Nothing else was needed.

dscn1679

It was such a nice evening…..Dos Locos has Happy Hour, specials pretty much every night of the week….they are also on Facebook.

Note:  Dos Locos also offers a Gluten Free Menu

Gracias Amigos…Hasta Luego…

Dos Locos, Restaurante Mejicano, Fajita & Stonegrill, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, Review, Ay Caramba Que Bueno!!

IMG_2730

Tantos anos este restaurante ha estado en nuestra playa y que extrano que nunca lo habia visitado anteriormente.  En una semana he ido 3 veces.

Oh, excuse me.  I got caught into my Spanish.  I was just thinking that this restaurant has been in our beach for so long and I had never paid them a visit.  I don’t even know why.  This past week I have gone 3 times.  I actually found a waiter that I knew, Alex, who is working at Dos Locos and he took care of my family with his usual friendly disposition.

Dos Locos is located at 208 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. is 302-227-3353.  Websited?  www.doslocos.com.

IMG_2727

First of all, I have to congratulate them for having a Gluten Free Menu.  So exciting it is to find so many restaurants in our coastal area having this menu for the customers that have a gluten allergy.

The first night I went I only got a couple of pictures because I forgot to charge the battery.  In the back of my mind I knew that I would be coming back to try one of the stonegrill meals.

Remember my old partner in crime, Debbie?  Well, she was there with me again.  Catching up after not seeing each other for quite some time.  And, she asked me; what do you want me to order?  It really did not matter as long as one of us had the stonegrill meal.

We took our time in ordering because we were bla, bla, bla, and more bla.  Taking a look at the restaurant I want to let you know that it was very comfortable, casual and relaxing.  A nice side bar area on one side; on the other, side booths and single tables were available.  The restaurant also had another room in the back.  It was crowded.  It is a restaurant that welcomes everyone.

IMG_2668

Our waiter brought us some tortilla chips and salsa.  The chips were warm and a little salty; perfect.  The sauce?  I would have put more cilantro and a bit of lime juice.

IMG_2669

Debbie decided to have the beef fajitas; hold the beans, please.  Guacamole?  Of course.  I had that dish the other night and mine was good. Debbie really enjoyed hers today, as well.

IMG_2715

Stonegrilling is done on individual stones that are over 700 degrees.  What’s good about it?  It sears the food at high temperatures, therefore, all natural juices are contained.  It is healthy because there are no oils; the meats; so tender.

I chose a combination of Angus beef filet and shrimp.  You can choose rub and sauces, but to tell you the truth I forgot about it and was not sure how it was going to taste.

When the stone was brought in, it was so hot; no wonder they say the stonegrilling is not for children.  It looked beautiful.

IMG_2713

Then, I followed the directions and turned over the food so it would cook on the other side.  I cut and enjoyed a great lunch.  I asked for a side salad.  You had the choice of salad or rice.  The taste of the beef was juicy and I must admit that I did not miss any rub or other seasoning.  The shrimp were large and cooking them over the stone was perfect.

IMG_2718

Dos Locos has a retail shop right next door.  It is a Gallery.  In it they have t-shirts, pick up souvenirs, plaques, hot sauces, and salsas.

IMG_2729

IMG_2719

IMG_2721

IMG_2728

They also carry the line of candy wrapper handbags.  Popular and very interesting.  Check that website www.nahuiollin.com.

IMG_2725

IMG_2726

It was already about 4:30 p.m.  Long lunch even though it did not seem so.  In the past I have said that sharing a meal with a friend is always….priceless.

Note:  Dos Locos opens daily at 11:30 a.m.  Check the website www.doslocos.com because they have so many specials and even Karaoke at 9:00 p.m. on Monday and Saturday evenings.
