What I could have given to find a place like Shell We Bounce when my kids were young!! Shell We Bounce is fairly new to the area but parents have found it quickly. It is a family owned business. Located at 20699 Coastal Highway (Rt. 1) between Rehoboth Beach and Dewey in the stretch known to locals as the “forgotten mile”. Plenty of parking available year-round.

I had to meet Stuart and his son, Max….Max was having some playing time today. Damp and cooler temperatures….kids are out of school!! At the counter, everyone that comes in has to sign a waiver…painless to do. Already plenty of parents were on site. Some sitting, and watching and others interacting much more. Shell We Bounce has plenty of staff available to see that everyone is safe.

I remember when I first moved to Bethany Beach so many years ago. At first not knowing anyone. But, it was only when I had my children and went out to take them to enjoy what was then available at the time, that I started to meet those friends in the same position and we have been friends forever. As I looked at these parents today, it brought memories.

TOUR DE SUSSEX – Is Southern Delaware’s premier cycling event. Starts at the Delaware Technical Community College at 7 a.m. on Saturday, September 13th. Registration is accepted the day of with a credit card and/or check. The distances will be 1, 25, 62, and 100 miles. My husband, John Merryman, III’s testimony before passing away last August 31st was that during over the 3 decades in Bethany Beach, Delaware, he had developed more than enough houses to know the business. He referred to Jeff Burton of Lane Builders as a consummate professional, easy to deal with and someone he was happy to be doing business with.
 
John and Jeff designed The Tidewater, a home that was to be built on Parkwood Street in Bethany Beach. The lots in Bethany are usually long and narrow, so a special house with plenty of bedrooms for a family and friends was born.
 
This house was within walking distance to the Town of Bethany; its beaches, boardwalk, shops and restaurants. It was located in a quiet street in Bethany. Instead of coming through the front door all wet, you could come from under the house and leave your beach belongings there.

Upon John’s passing, we called Jeff and we also called the buyer who was from Northern Virginia. I cannot imagine their thoughts in having to then deal with the widow. Having been assured that the building was going to go as planned, they were confident in our ability to carry it through.
I am writing this post, which by the way, is very personal, since the year anniversary of John’s passing is around the corner. I wanted to tell you the kind of builder Jeff was for us. The first thing he said without hesitation was “I will make this process as easy as I can for you.” And, he did.
 Jeff Burton taking care of last minute details. Spiritually, John was guiding me through this process. I believe that.
The house turned out to be so nice. I met the owners on the day of the settlement when we were checking the house.
The floors were hand-scraped wood flooring, the tones of the house were soothing, lots of gray, white and blue on the walls and countertops.
The family is going to love having all those bedrooms and bathrooms. A spacious laundry room…a must!
 
I know that when the owners come up the stairs they will certainly enjoy the smooth flowing of their beach house. They are already enjoying it, along with everything Bethany Beach has to offer.
This family had been coming to Bethany for many years. They told me they were waiting for the right house….The Tidewater is going to be a place for rest and relaxation. Bethany Beach is a family resort. It is also known as The Quiet Resort.
Jeff Burton surprised me on that day. The Tidewater is going to be always The Tidewater; in memory of John. I will probably not have any contact with the new owners. Our business is finished. But, this house will always hold a special place in my heart. John would have been so proud.
 
My testimony? I can’t say enough about Jeff Burton, his building partner, Keith Hastings, and their staff at Lane Builders. If you are planning on building or remodeling at the Delaware Beaches, please give them a call. You will not be disappointed.

4th ANNUAL WINGS OF HOPE KICK-OFF
Today, Wednesday, the 13th of August is the official kick off date for the 4th Annual Wings of Hope…the Campaing of Hope. This prelude to the much anticipated Butterfly Release that will be taking place on Saturday, September 13th.
Businesses and organizations throughout Sussex County will be selling seeded paper buterflies to honor friends and loved ones impacted by cancer.
Epworth United Methodist Church, Grace United Methodist Church, All Saints’ Church, Dimitra Yoga, Rehoboth Beach Public Library, Tomato Sunshine and Surf Bagel are just a few of the locations selling butterflies.
Beauties and Butterflies — Salons Suporting Cancer Support Community Delaware chaired by Drexel Davison of Bad Hair Day? includes over a dozen beauty salons participating in the Wings of Hope by selling butterflies. Thousands of paper butterflies will be displayed at the Wings of Hope – A Butterfly Release on 9/13 on the grounds of the Medical Arts Building at the Beebe Health Campus on Rt. 24 in Rehoboth Beach.
This very special celebration of life is highlighted with the release of 250 live Monarch butterflies in recognition of Sussex County friends and neighbors impacted by cancer. With that in mind and Southern Delaware as a journey my post begins….
In 2013 the MidAtlantic Wine + Food Festival began as an independent festival. It featured international vintners and chefs in collaboration with Delaware’s local talent. The festival would bring tourism to Delaware and also would increase awareness of this small state’s cultural assets.
The MidAtlantic Wine + Food Festival is a Delaware nonprofit. A designted portion of this year’s festival proceeds will benefit 5 arts related beneficiaries throughout Delaware. These are: CAMP Rehoboth, Christina Cultural Arts Center, Joshua M. Freeman Foundation, which operates the Freeman Stage in Fenwick Island, OperaDelaware, and the Smyrna-Clayton Heritage Association, which operates the historic Smyrna Opera House.

This is a statewide event…..Southern Delaware is a culinary destination and the events coming to the Delaware Beaches are not to be missed. So, what’s going on?
“Meet the Winemakers” – Saturday, May 17th – Eden located at 23 Baltimore Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach – 3 award-winning winemakers will have an informal “up close and personal” type of meeting. Very informal. Tastings of each winemaker’s varietals will be accompanied by finger foods provided by Eden’s acclaimed chefs, Andy Feeley and Danielle Pamarello. Stop by between 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Regina Martinelli, Martinelli Vineyards, California – She comes from a lineage of farmers, starting with her Great Grandfather, Giuseppe Martinelli, who planted the family’s flagship vineyards in 1885. The primary goal of Martinelli Winery is to hand-craft excellent wines born in their vineyards.
Tom Mortimer, La Cadeau, Oregon – Tom Mortimer and his wife, Deb, are the proprietors of Le Cadeau Vineyard. They manage the farming and development of the vineyard, the winemaking team, and the marketing of Le Cadeau to top restaurants and retailers in the U.S., Canada, Germany, and Sweden. Le Cadeau Vineyard specializes in estate-grown Pinot Noir from the Chehalem Mountains AVA of Oregon’s Willamette Valley.
Jon Staenberg, Hand of God Wines, Argentina – Jon Staenberg and Santiago Achaval, one-time classmates at Stanford Business School, now partner in Hand of God wines in Mendoza, Argentina. Jon will pour from the inaugural vintages of this new winery, as well as wines from Achaval Ferrer. Wine Advocate awarded 92 points to one of the wines from Hand of God. Achaval Ferrer boasts four of the five highest-rated wines from Argentina, (receiving 99s and 98s) from Wine Spectator, and Achaval Ferrer is ranked the highest-rated Argentine wine to date by The Wine Advocate.

Plenty of activities and events going on this gorgeous week-end at the Delaware Beaches. Whether you attend any of them or decide that a week-end of dining, shopping and strolling is more your cup of tea….then go for it because when you are at the beach you need to relax and slow down.
MILFORD – A picturesque and historic town. Downtown Milford is hosting the Bug & Bud Festival from 9 a.m. until 4 p.nm. Join in the fun; this is the 11th year this event has been taking place along the Mispillion Riverwalk. This is a celebration of Arbor Day. The City of Miford’s designation as a Tree City, and Milford’s role in the ladybug’s designation as the State Bug of Delaware. There will be live entertainment, kids games, free giveaways, a ladybug costume parade, art shows and over 150 food and craft and community vendors., paddle boat rides, and plenty of more fun.
Take time to stop and visit the Milford Museum.

What’s Going On?
Friday, 4/18 – LEWES – THE 46th ANNUAL GREAT DELAWARE KITE FESTIVAL – Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes – Registration will be at 9:30 a.m. and the competitions will begin at 10:30 a.m. I should be warmer by then. No entry fee for competitors. Three age categories. No charge to watch, but enrance fees willl apply when entering the Park which will be collected at the entrance. $4/car for Delaware license cars and $8/car for out of state tags. The Jolly Trolley will transport spectators at not cost to the competition field from the state park’s beach parking lot. Handicap parking is available at the Seaside Nature Center parking lot. Don’t have a kite but want to participate? Kids’ Ketch and Rehoboth Toy & Kite Company will be on site selling a wide variety of kites.
