Destination? Zumbathon!, Delaware SPCA, Georgetown Shelter, YMCA, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Fundraising Event, A 2-Hour Fitness Party!!, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn9397

At the end of April was the 5th anniversary of Addy, my Diva pooch, coming into our home.  She quickly became part of our home and she really does think she owns the neighborhood.  Here, you see her on the sofa…watching for golfers and grounds keepers.  She is not to fond of them, but they keep the community in top shape.

I had never adopted a pet and cannot recommend it enough.  They really give back to you so much.

dscn9518

The Delaware SPCA is a private non-profit organization that is 140 years old.  It is the oldest animal welfare organization in the state of Delaware.

The local Georgetown Shelter is a very active shelter.  They promote their dogs and take them to many events throughout the Delaware Beaches.  It is located at 22918 Dupont Blvd. in Georgetown, Delaware, 19947.  Tel. 302-856-6361.  You may also visit http://www.delspca.org.  You can even call them and tell them what you are looking for.

Besides adoptions, they offer Spay/Neuter clinics, vaccination clinics and hope that you will also call them if you suspect any cruelty to an animal….they have an investigation’s department.

The Delaware SPCA does not receive state or county funding, and there is no national SPCA.  They count on just local donations to carry on their work for the animals.

So, Alice and I decided that for the animals we were going to join in the First Annual Zumbathon at the Rehoboth Beach YMCA, on Sunday, 5/4.  We joined about another 50 particpants and took over their gym for a 2-hour fitness party.

dscn9516

They had a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, and door prizes.  Everyone started the Zumbathon with great energy.  Plenty of instructors took over the lead during the 2 hour fitness party.  Some of us took breaks but then got back into it.

It was well attended and I imagine that they will continue to have it, after so many came in even on a sunny day in Rehoboth Beach.

Have a good one!!

An afternoon of “dog-gone” good fun for individuals, families and canines at the 3rd Annual “Bark on the Boards”….Destination? Lake Gerar in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  Date?  Saturday, October 5th.

Even though Rehoboth Beach is known as a summer destination, the Second Season is one of the best.  Restaurants are open, shops are full of merchandise, the beach is a place for relaxation….and for fundraising!!

If you are traveling with your pooch to Rehoboth Beach, check this fundraising event hosted by the Delaware Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.  It is the oldest and most experienced animal welfare organization in the state.

Last year, the event attracted more than 250 walkers with their pets.  It is sponsored by Browseabout Books.  The afternoon includes dog contests, including a bikini contest, a disc dog demonstration, refreshments, kids’ activities, and much more.

Location?  Lake Gerar Park in Rehoboth Beach.  Lake Gerar is one of the 3 fresh water lakes closest to the ocean anywhere in the country.  Along with Silver Lake, and Lake Comegys…these are the jewels of Rehoboth Beach!!

dscn9147

All the money raised is used to fund the work of the Delaware SPCA and for the care of abused, neglected and homeless animals, and their efforts to reduce pet overpopulation through spay/neuter programs.  Delaware SPCA is the oldest animal welfare organization in thestate.  It was established in 1873.  Today it operates shelters in Stanton, New Castle County, and Georgetown, Sussex County.

This walk also coincides with the first day of the “off season”, when leashed pets can be walked on the Boardwalk and beach without restrictions.

Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. in Lake Gerar Park.  The walk will start at Noon at the north end of the Boardwalk.

Advanced registration is $20 for adults, before October 3rd, and $25 the day of the event.

1st Annual Rehoboth Beach VegFest, Outdoor Festival, A Success in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Exhibitors, Speakers, Tastings, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn3929

Animal friendly cuisine, the benefits of choosing plant based foods.  I wanted to learn more.  Then, I came upon the card that announced an upcoming new festival in Rehoboth Beach….VegFest!  It would be a vegetarian celebration at the Beach.  It would feature speakers, cooking demonstrations, samples, exhibitors, food vendors and a little something for everyone…loved the vegetable garden, including the sensory garden where kids could touch and feel what was growing.

dscn3952

dscn3954

The festival was sponsored by Compassion Over Killing (COK), a national non-profit animal protection organization based in Washington,DC.  COK has another office in Los Angeles.  Since 1995, they have been working to end animal abuse.  If you are in Washington  on Saturday, September 28th, COK will be presenting DC VegFest.  More info?  Please visit http://www.cok.net.

Visiting Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland?  Both cities have online vegetarian resourses…where to eat in town.  Please check http://www.vegdc.com, and http://www.vegbaltimore.com.

In Rehoboth Beach you will find a social and outreach organization called VegRehoboth, a sister sponsor to this outdoor festival.  It is open to all residents and visitors to our beaches.  Even if you have that curiosity.  Some people want to cut back, some are vegetarians, vegans, and some called themselves part-time vegetarians.  VegRehoboth hosts social gatherings; make new friends, information and great food.  For more information, please visit http://www.vegrehoboth.com.

VegFest was held on a hot day but with a nice breeze.  Tents were set up to accommodate the speakers and cooking demonstrations.

dscn3922

One of the speakers, Dr. Ruby Lathon who is a holistic health and wellness expert is an advocate for plant based nutrition.  She made a couple of dishes, one in particular, caught my attention.  Made with kale and mango.  As soon as I get the recipe, I will put it on the post.  It looked so easy and it was delicious.  To learn more about Dr. Lathon’s story, please visit http://www.rubylathon.com.

Spring Fling, Doggies at The Beach, The Pottery Place, BIN 66, Georgetown Shelter, Delaware SPCA, Raising funds, Awareness, Having Fun, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches

 dscn3994

It is now evening and as I sat down to write this post, I was thinking that it was really a nice Sunday.  It started with an early breakfast in downtown Rehoboth Beach with a friend.  Then, I went to see what was going on at The Pottery Place where Doggies at The Beach had organized a fun event to raise money for the Georgetown Shelter, Delaware SPCA.

I have mentioned Doggies at The Beach often.  It is where I leave my, rescued dog, Addy, when I go away.  I do so with total confidence that she will get the best care.  This is a cage free facility with 24 hour human supervision.  They are located at 18806 John J. Williams Highway (Rt. 24) in Rehoboth.  Tel. 302-644-8200.  Website? http://www.doggiesatthebeach.com.

dscn3979

Jim, who is the top dog at this facility had organized this event.  It took place at The Pottery Place, located at 20717 Coastal Highway (Rt. 1).  Tel. 302-227-1660.  Their other location is in Fenwick Island at Fenwick Sunshine Plaza, 1500 Coastal Highway (Rt. 1).  Tel. 302-539-3603.  Website http://www.potteryplaceperks.com.

Another sponsor was BIN 66 Fine Wine & Spirits with 2 locations.  One, next to The Pottery Place at 20729 Coastal Highway (Rt. 1).  This is their Highway One Flagship Store.  Tel. 302-227-6161.  Their other location is in Downtown Rehoboth Beach at 301 Rehoboth Ave. at The Shops at The Pearl.  Tel. 302-227-6966.  Website? http://www.bin66.com.

dscn3978

And, free hotdogs, cooked on site were offered by Bethany Blues Lewes.  Bethany Blues Lewes is located at 618285 Coastal Highway (between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach).  Tel. 302-644-2500.  Website?  http://www.bethanyblues.com.  Eric was cooking and the grilled hotdogs were perfect!!

dscn3992

dscn3993

The proceeds from this fun event were for the Georgetown Shelter, Delaware SPCA.  It is located at 22918 Dupont Blvd., Georgetown, DE.  Tel. 302-856-6361.  Website?  www.delspca.org.  When you open the website it will show two locations in Delaware.  Click on the Sussex County Shelter.  You can see what dogs are available and their story online.

dscn3976

This shelter has been so great in promoting their dogs.  You can also find them on Facebook at Georgetown Shelter, Delaware SPCA.  They have tons of events to raise awareness and funds and to find their adoptable dogs their forever homes.  The facebook page will give you updates and keep you informed as the dogs get adopted.  They are doing an amazing job.  The volunteers are caring and, definitely, animal lovers.

Today they had one cat at the event, but they have plenty at the shelter.

dscn3977

Their dogs were:

Fozzy, aka Fozzy Bear –  I fell in love with him.  He was so gentle and so funny.  Very well behaved.  If you want to check him out, and read his story, go on the website above mentioned and he is there as Fozz-35.

dscn3972

Valentino was so cute and full of energy.  You will find him on the website as Valentino-102.

dscn3973

Beetle was very interested in my hotdog.  He can be found at the website under Beetle-213.

That's Valentino with the Volunteer

That's Valentino with the Volunteer

Phineas & Ferb were found together and what a pair they were!!  Obedient and amazingly calm.  They will need to be adopted together.  You can read more about them on the website as Phineas & Ferb.

dscn3975

People were mingling and having fun.  Some brought their dogs and were having their pictures taken at the Party Booth.

This little dog was sitting in the lifeguarding chair posing like she did that every day.

dscn4002

Definitely, a diva…check her nails!!  The perfect pedicure.

dscn4003

What surprised us the most was the arrival of Reggie, the potbelly pig.  He came with its owner who had adopted Reggie from the Georgetown Shelter, Delaware SPCA.  He was so sweet and so friendly!!  He also is used to dogs since there are a few in his household.

dscn3988

dscn3990

What is left to say?  Well, animals bring joy, peace, and serenity to its owners.  It is proven that therapy dogs improve the lifes of the ones they touch.  I look at Addy and she looks back with those eyes that say “thank you for giving me a chance”.  If only she realized that she has given so much more in return.

dscn0953

Talk to you later…

This is a house like no other in our coastal area.  I should say home because it is so warm and it welcomes, regardless of age, people afflicted with cancer.  It is a time for them, free of charge, to come and experience the intoxicating time at the beach with family and friends.  Out of sadness, a foundation began some years ago; The Justin Jennings Foundation.  Do you want to know more about it?  www.justinjennings.org. Tel. 302-261-2510.

In order to keep up with the every day running of Justin’s Beach House, events for fundraising take place throughout the year.  So, on Saturday, May 26th they day will start at 8 a.m., rain or shine.  Day of Registration opens at 7 a.m.

Free Kids Dash for 8 and U will begin at 7:50 a.m. at start/finish area.

Great post race party at Mango’s Restaurant by the Bethany Beach Boardwalk.  Overall male and female champions and masters, plus top 3 in 5 year age groups (14): 9 and U to 70+.  Finisher awards to all walkers.  (No runners under the age of 5 years. without an adult running partner.)
