Delaware Seashore State Park, Indian River Marina, The Cottages, Hammerheads Dockside, Hook’em & Cook’em, Delaware Center for the Inland Bays, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

DSCN5191

Another gorgeous day at the Delaware Beaches.  I know it is August but it feels like September.  The next time you are driving north or south on Coastal Highway by the new Indian River Bridge, make a point to stop by and check it out.  You might end up staying, playing and dining.  On a beautiful day, the Delaware Seashore State Park shows it all off!!

DSCN5192

The Indian River Marina is on the north side of the Indian River Inlet, on 3945 Inlet Rd.  With all the construction that has been going on, it can get a little confusing, but it is worth stopping by.

DSCN5215

As you drive on Inlet Rd. you will see on the left the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays.  There are 3 shallow bays:  Rehoboth Bay, Indian River Bay, and Little Assawoman Bay.  The Delaware Center for the Inland Bays is responsible for habitat restoration, science and research and also community outreach.  For more information and to check the schedule of events, please visit http://www.inlandbays.org.

Plenty of parking at the Indian River Marina.  Charters and fishing trips are arranged here, as well.

A great service is the cleaning of your catch!!

They also sell fresh seafood…the catch of the day; sandwiches and soups.  They have a freezer with frozen seafood, as well.

The newest member is Hammerheads Dockside.  They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You might want to stop by for a drink and watch the sunset.

DSCN5194

I have not had the opportunity to try them but just driving by a couple of times tells me that it has been very well received.

On week-ends you may want to catch a ride on the Jolly Trolley from Hammerheads in Dewey Beach to Hammerheads Dockside and back.  More info?  Call 302-227-7325.

The outdoors is the playground at the Delaware Beaches and it is great to see people fishing, relaxing and enjoying the beautiful scenery at the waters edge.

The Cottages are adjacent to the Indian River Marina. They are so cute and have fantastic views of the Indian River Bay.  Each cottage sleeps 6.  All you have to do is bring the linens, towels, and your telephones.

The porches offer a view to the Indian River and your own path to the water. If you love to cook outdoors, there is an area for barbecuing, with a picnic table.

Delaware Seashore State Park, Seafood & Arts Festival, Saturday, Maritime Heritage Festival, Sunday, Delaware Beaches

100_1021

6 miles of ocean and bay shoreline, swimming and sunbathing, surfing and sailboarding, and so much more.  Sounds good, doesn’t it?  If you are visiting the Delaware Beaches this week-end, well, it is going to be hot and muggy.  But, the following two events might be something you might want to check out.  Both are on the water so it will definitely be cooler.  If you have your friends and family visiting then I would drag them to it.  Something different.

 100_4777

Saturday, July 30th, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. is the Seafood & Arts Festival.  It is free!!  It will be at the Indian River Marina.  There will be live music, fresh seafood and platters, family fun and Lollipop the Clown will be there, as well.

img_5748

You can call 302-227-3071 if you need more info. or visit www.destateparks.com.

The marina looks beautiful.  I had the opportunity to visit a few weeks ago, and was completely impressed by it.  My husband stops for breakfast once in a while.  You cannot beat the scenery!!

There is a lot of construction right by the Inlet, but the marina will be just north of the bridge.  There will be plenty of signs for the festival.

On Sunday, July 31st, is the Maritime Heritage Festival at the Indian River Life Saving Museum from Noon until 5 p.m.  Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for ages 4 to 12, 3 years and under are free.

This museum is gorgeous and definitely worth seeing.  In one of my posts, I remember writing that for so many years I used to drive by it; would glance and never gave it another thought.  Well, that completely has changed.  It’s worth visiting; learnig about the life of the people that looked after our coast.

100_4252

Therefore, on Sunday it will be a day of entertainment, crafts, games and food for the whole family.

The Delaware Seashore State Park is celebrating Delaware’s Maritime Heritage.  For more info., please call 302-227-6991.  You can also visit www.destateparks.com.

You wil not be able to miss the museum, it is just north of the inlet.

Talk to you later…

“The Beach is a Narrow World between the waves and the land.”

100_5299

The kind of day we had today in the Delmarva Peninsula was one in a million.  Bright sunshine, no humidity, 70 degrees and all you wanted to do was to be outside.  And, so I was.  Dishes not in the dishwasher, beds not made; I really did not care.  Soon enough fall will turn into winter and we will be more indoors.

100_5305

100_5320

I had not been in some time to the Nature Center located at 15099 Cape Henlopen Drive in Lewes, Delaware.  Right inside the Cape Henlopen State Park.

It has a shop as well as a museum/aquarium.  You can read about the tides and watch the different types of fish that live in our area.

100_5297

100_5259

There is also a “petting” tank.  The horseshoe crab came right up to me the moment I approached the tank.

Just North of the Indian River Inlet Bridge is the restored U.S. Life-Saving Station

100_1683I have been living in the area of Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach for many years and it is amazing to me, now, to realize how many areas of my beaches I have taken for granted.

Take the Indian River Life-Saving Station.  It has been there since 1876 and through the years I passed by it all the time.  Looked at it and kept on going.  Never had the curiosity to stop and see what it was all about until now.  It is the only station in Delaware that is still standing in its original location.

The United States Life-Saving Service placed stations throughout the coastline to help rescue sailors and cargo from shipwrecks.  The government appointed a keeper, who lived with a crew of men in the stations and these “surfmen” were familiar with the local waters.  They worked during the stormy season of September through April.

The service operated until 1915, when the U.S. Life-Saving Service and the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service merged to form the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Indian River Life-Saving Station was restored to its 1905 appereance.  It opened its doors to the public in 1998.

There are many different tours throughout the year besides the tours of the station. They offer lantern tours along the water’s edge, historical demonstrations, and nature programs.  The Station has a gift shop and is also able to handle weddings and special events.

They have State Park guided kayak trips, as well as different classes. For example, learn to make your own rope bracelet known as “sailor bracelets” or “surfers bracelets”.  Please call and find out what programs they still have available now that the summer is coming to an end.

I spoke to Jim Hall who is the Nature Center Manager and he is in charge of all the programs.  If you need more information call telephone 302-227-6991 or go to the website www.destateparks.com

If you vacation in all of my beaches, please go visit this museum, who also serves as the Park Office for the Delaware Seashore State Park.  Don’t wait as long as I have.  I cannot wait to go back and try one of the kayak trips.

It is very easy to get to the Station since it is located on Rt. 1, 3 miles south of Dewey Beach or one mile north of the Indian River Inlet Bridge.

Note:  Information on the Station for my post was taken from the Journey Along the Sands by Robert Trapani, Jr. and from the Delaware Seashore State Park.
