Lewes, Delaware is Sussex County’s northernmost coastal town.  It was founded in 1631 and it is the oldest settlement in Delaware.  That’s why the nickname of “The First Town in The First State” is so well known.

Lewes is in the perfect location in Southern Delaware.  It provides access to the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean.  I don’t know if you know that in 2006 Lewes was selected by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of America’s “Dozen Distinctive Destinations”.

It is a year round community and the town does look good all the time.  Plenty of shops, restaurants, activities and entertainment for the residents and visitors alike.

So, What’s Going On Lewes?

FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY, 10/3, 10/4, 10/5 – LEWES MERCHANTS’ FALL SIDEWALK SALE – Sales galore, plenty of bargains, not only in Lewes, but in Rehoboth Beach, and Dewey Beach, as well.  You would not believe, people do plan for these sales at the beach.  Great time to enjoy a fall week-end and grab those essentials.  Stores surrounding the Lewes Commercial Historic District will be ready!!  I hope you are too and the stores do open at 10 a.m.

SATURDAY, 10/4 – LEWES IN BLOOM’S FALL PLANT SALE – 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at 2nd & Banks Streets in front of the Citizens Bank. Lewes looks so nice with the help of this organization.  The sales of tulips and other flowering plants at this time of the year, and member-grown plants, as well help fund their horticultural efforst in the City of Lewes.  http://www.lewesinbloom.org.

SATURDAY, 10/4 – VOLUNTEER TRAIL DAY – CAPE HENLOPEN STATE PARK – 9:00 a.m. until Noon.  Join Friends of Cape Henlopen as they clean up and work to maintain the park’s trails used by so many year round.  More info?  Please call 302-644-5005.

SATURDAY, 10/4 – LEWES FALL CRAFT FAIR – 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Historical Complex at Second & Shipcarpenter Streets in Downtown Lewes.  Admission is $5.00 per person and children under 12 are Free.  Proceeds from this event will benefit the educational and preservation programs at the Society.  Buildings in the Historical Complex will be open to the public.  Live music from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. by New & Used Bluegrass Band.  Delicious food by Casa Amici…cold treats by Vitale’s Italian Ice.  This is a well attended Craft Fair with usually around 3,000 visitors coming to the town.  For more information, please visit http://www.historiclewes.org.

SATURDAY, 10/4 – DELAWARE BREAKWATER KAYAK ECO-TOURS – 10 a.m. until Noon – 2-hour tours for beginner paddlers, but can be strenous.  Equipment will be provided.  Bring drinking water and sunscreen.  No flip-flops.  Single and tandem kayaks available.  Solo paddlers must be at least 13.  Under 18 must be accompanied by a paying adult.  Limit 10.  Pre-registration is required by calling 302-645-6852.  $25 for solo and $35 for tandem.  Location?  Cape Henlopen State Park, 15099 Cape Henlopen Dr. in Lewes.

SATURDAY, 10/4 – HIKE THE POINT –  11 a.m. until 1 p.m. 2 Miles!!  Explore the natural and cultural history of this ever-changing spit of land.  Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.  Ages 7 and up with an adult.  Pre-registration is necessary, so please call 302-645-6852.  It is FREE!!  Location?  Cape Henlopen State Park, 15099 Cape Henlopen Drive.

SATURDAY, 10/4 – 19th ANNUAL BOAST THE COAST MARITIME FESTIVAL – Maritime-themed activities throughout the day.  This event is presented by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, http://www.leweschamber.com.  Activities at the 1812 Park and the City Dock will begin at 11 a.m.  Boat Tours at the City Dock will begin at 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.  New Jersey’s Tall Ship, the A.J. Meerwald returns for this event, offering free tours, along with Wilmington’s newest Fire Boat.  The Boat Parade will be held at 4 p.m.  Seafood Tasting at 1812 Park, will begin at lunch time.  Entertainment at the 1812 Park at the Family Fun Tent with Flumpa, the Tree Frog musical show, and Chuckles the Clown’s pirate-themed magic show.  The Lewes Historical Society’s Maritime History Museum, located at the Cannonball House on Front Street will be open for tours, and The Lightship Overfalls at Canalfront Park on Front will be open for free tours, as well.

SATURDAY, 10/4 – ZWAANENDAEL MUSEUM MARITIME PROGRAM – 2 p.m.  Location?  At the museum on the corner of King’s Highway and Savannah Rd. in Lewes.

SATURDAY, 10/4 – CAMPFIRE CIRCLE:  NIGHT SOUNDS AT CAPE HENLOPEN STATE PARK – 6 P.M. UNTIL 7 P.M. – Enjoy the stories and the activities out about nocturnal animals.  Bring marshmallows and sticks for roasting after the program.  Ages 5 and up with an adult.  Meet at the campground amphitheater. SUNDAY, 10/5 – CLASSIC CAR SHOW AT THE CAPE MAY-LEWES FERRY TERMINAL – Staging will begin at 7:30 a.m. but the show will start at 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.  Proceeds will benefit breast cancer awareness and will be donated to Cape Regional Breast Cancer Services and Beebe’s Tunnell Cancer Care.  More info?  Please visit http://www.cmlf.com

SUNDAY, 10/5 – COAST DAY – 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Each year Coast Day is presented by The University of Delaware, and sponsored by UD’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment and the Delaware Sea Grant College Program.  Admission and parking are free.  Location?  UD’s Hugh R. Sharp Campus, 700 Pilottown Rd., in Lewes.  Those in attendance will be able to interact with researchers, tour ships, try hands-on activities, and attend presentations on a wide range of topics.  Family friendly activities will be:  an event-wide treasure hunt for answers to questions about the environment and Coast Day exhibits.  Children can meet sea-dwelling animals such as horseshoe crabs and dogfish sharks at the critter touch tanks.  Live music, vendor displays, and seafood favorites…..food, including the Crab Cake Cook-Off and the Seafood Chowder Challenge!!

Lewes was settled by the Dutch in 1631.  It is located where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean.  It is great for beach goers; the bay and the ocean beaches to choose to sit back and relax or play.

Lewes is also a very comfortable walking town.  Within approximately half square mile you can stroll, shop, dine, and visit museums or juts enjoy how quaint this coastal and historic town is.

Tuesday, 6/18 – CHICKS FOR CHARITY – June Dinner at Fish On! Restaurant, located at The Village of Five Points in Lewes.  It is a great opportunity to meet new people in the community, have a nice dinner, maybe even win something and support a great cause.  Once a month a local community is chosen and on Tuesday night the proceeds will benefit La Esperanza.  The word esperanza means hope.  Faith, Hope & Charity are 3 theological virtues.  La Esperanza was founded in 1996 to primarily provide support to the increasing number of migrant workers arring in Sussex County.  It is the only bi-cultural and bilingual (501(c)(3) multi-service agency in Sussex County, Delaware that provides free culturally and linguistically appropriate programs and services in the areas of family developmet, immigration, victim services, and education for Hispanic adults, children and families.  More info? Tuesday, 6/18 – SUMMER CONCERT AT STANGO PARK – The evening’s entertainment will be Dr. Harmonica & Rockett 88.  Their genre?  Blues!  7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.  Grab your friends and family, bug spray, blanket or chair and enjoy an outdoor concert in Historic Lewes.  Location?  Stango Park, next to the Lewes Public Library along Kings Highway.

Wednesday, 6/19 through Sunday, 6/23 – DELAWARE BREAKWATER KAYAK ECO-TOURS – These tours are sponsored by the Cape Henlopen State Park.  Take a tour of Delaware Bay and the Breakwater in a sit-on-top kayak!  The tour is for beginning paddlers, but can be strenuous.  10 a.m. until Noon.  All equipment is provided.  Just bring water and sunscreen.  Secure footwear only; no flip-flops.  Ages 8 and up, but solo paddlers must be at least 13 years of age and all participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.  Limit to 10 people.  $25 for a solo kayak, $35 for a tandem kayak.  Please call 302-645-6852 for more info. or to pre-register.  Meet at Kayak Shack at the Fishing Pier located at 42 Cape Henlopen Dr., Lewes,  19958.  Please remember that this event is dependent on the weather, so call to confirm if you have weather related questions on the day of the tour.

Wednesday, 6/19 – ZUMBA WITH KELLY – From 6 p.m. until 7 p.m.  A good way to end your day or start your evening.  Every Wednesday through August 28th.  Location?  Lewes Canalfront Park, located on 211 Front Street in Lewes.  It is Free!

Wednesday, 6/19 – CINEMA BY THE CANAL BEGINS – The summer series of outdoor film screenings “Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away” at the Lewes Canalfront Park, on 211 Front Street in Lewes. The film will begin at dusk; 8:15 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.  Admission is free!  Please take a blanket, bug spray, and friends, if you want to.

“Cirque du Soleil” Worlds Away” – In this fantasy feature, a young woman in a small Mid-Western town goes to a traveling carnival one evening, where she is urged by a silent clown to visit the carnival’s circus and see The Aerialist, the show’s star attraction.  She is entranced by The Aerialist, but during his act he misses a catch and falls to the ground.  She rushes to help him, but then the ground beneath them gives away and they fall through into the dreamlike world of Cirque du Soleil…..PG rated.  Runtime: 91 minutes.

Thursday,  6/20 – SUMMER SOLSTICE – 108 Sun Salutations from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Canalfront Park on 211 Front Street. This event is presented by Soul Yoga.  Kick-off the summer out in the sun with a whole lotta sweat!! A celebration of the Summer Solstice.  The teachers will guide you through 108 Sun Salutations.  Get a team together and tag in and out like a relay…the more the merrier.  Everyone is welcomed.  $20 suggested donation, which will be collected at the park.  All proceeds benefit Friends of the Canalfront Park.  Rain or shine, but in the case of thunderstorms, the rain date will be Friday, 6/21.

Friday, 6/21 – HISTORY HAPPY HOURS – Every Friday from June 14th through September 27th, featured presentations will be offered free of charge at 4 p.m. for 20-30 minutes, followed by a question-answer period.  At the conclusion of the presentations, a glass of wine will be offered.   Indulge in interesting dialog lead by local history buffs, ranging in topic from early explorers of the Delaware Bay to Lewes during the Revolutionary War.  On Friday Paul Collins presents “Early Explorers of the Delaware Bay” at the Cannonball House at 4 p.m.  The Cannon Ball House is on Front Street in Historic Lewes.  More info?  Please visit http://www.historiclewes.org/events/history-happy-hour-4pm-O

Saturday, 6/22 and Sunday, 6/23 – MID-ATLANTIC SEA GLASS & COASTAL ARTS FESTIVAL – It will take place at the Historic Complex of the Lewes Historical Society at Second and Shipcarpenter Streets in Lewes.  9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday.  Admission is $5 per person.  Children under 12, free.  A wrist band will be issued allowing entrance on both days.  Wrist bands can be purchased in advance in Historic Lewes at Sand ‘n’ Stones on Front Street or the Society’s Museum Gif shop at the Ryves Holt House at Second and Mulberry Streets.  Last year, about 3,000 visitors attended this event.  Sea glass can be found all over the world, but the beaches of the northeast United States, California, northwest England, Mexico, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Nova Scotia Italy and southern Spain are famous for their bounty of sea glass, bottles, bottle lips and stoppers, art glass, marbles, and pottery shards.  The best time to look are during spring tides and during the first low tide after a storm.

Saturday, 6/22 – TOUR THE LIGHTHOUSE! – Climb to the top of the Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse and take a trip to the Harbor of Regufe Lighthouse for photos.  10:00 a.m.  Reservations are required.  Please call 302-644-7046.  Tours are subject to change and depend on the weather conditions.  I have taken this tour and it was truly amazing.  Tours depart from the pier located behind the Cape-May Lewes Ferry Terminal in Lewes.  Arrive at leat 15 minutes in advance.  No sandals or open toe shoes are allowed.  Children must be 13 years of age except on dates noted when children as young as 6 are allowed.  Please check http://www.delawarelights.org/tours.html.

What’s Going On? Lewes, Delaware, Activities, Events, Hello Summer of 2013!! Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware, Happy Memorial Week-End!

Coastal Highway or Rt. 1 is our major “highway” traveling through the Delaware Beaches into Ocean City, Maryland.  You could tell the “gates” were opening already.  Plenty of cars dragging summer gear.  It is, afterall, the official opening of Summer!!  Even though all the towns located at the Delaware Beaches enjoy visitors year-round, it is at this time of the year when we look forward to doing everything our coastal towns have to offer.

So, if you are visiting the First Town in the First State…..this historic town has plenty to offer this holiday week-end.

Friday, 5/24 and Saturday, 5/25 – Kalmar Nyckel Day Sail from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.  The Kalmar Nyckel is Delaware’s Tall Ship.  If you want to know more, please visit http://www.kalmarnyckel.org.  The tall ship will be at the Lewes Ferry Terminal.  It costs $60 for adults and $40 for children 17 and younger.  For reservations, please call 302-429-7447.

Friday, 5/24 – Lightship Overfalls Opening Party and Auction from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.  This is a 75th Birthday Party for Big Red – Annual Party and Auctions.  This historic lightship is celebrating, so dress up, don your party hat, get a birthday card and join the fun.  Location?  The Virden Center on the University of Delaware Marine Campus.  Tickets are $40 per person in advance and $45 at the door, if available.  The evening will include party games, raffles, silent and live auctions and great food and drinks.

Saturday, 5/25 through Monday, 5/27 –  Maritime Weekend at Zwaanendael Museum, located at 102 Kings Highway.  All Day!  This museum was modeled after the town hall in Hoorn, The Netherlands.  It commemorates Delaware’s first European colony established by the Dutch in 1631.

Saturday, 5/25 – Pirate Sail on the Kalmar Nyckel, Delaware’s Tall Ship from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.  Walk the plank of this authentic seagoing re-creation of a 17th Century Dutch pinnace.  Join their captain and crew of salty pirates for a festive experience on the high seas!  $60 adults, $40 for ages 17 and under.  For reservations and further info., please call 302-429-7447.

Saturday, 5/25 – Seining the Bay from 11 a.m. until Noon.  Meet at the Seaside Nature Center, inside the Cape Henlopen State Park.  Search the shallows of Delaware Bay with a seine net looking crabs, fish and other bay creatures.  Dress appropriately, meaning dress to get wet.  It is for ages 5 years of age and older.  No reservations.  Tickets will be available on Saturday with a maximum of 6 per person, limit 30.  $5/person.  For more info., please call 302-645-6852.
