Rehoboth Beach Eats, Cafe Papillon, Creperie, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, French Bakery, Cafe, A Slice of France In Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches, Bon Appetit!!
Bonjour! I have a friend that says that I have quite an imagination, calling it “A Slice of France In Southern Delaware”. Well, crepes are the street foods of France. These thin pancakes come from the Latin word “crispa”, which means curled. They are quite diverse; eat them at street stalls or in fine dining; enjoy as an entree or as a dessert. In Rehoboth Beach, you can sit outside and enjoy this authentic French Cafe.
Here, in Rehoboth Beach you will find Cafe Papillon, located on the ocean block, in the Penny Lane Mall, which can be accessed by parking either on Rehoboth Avenue or Wilmington Avenue. The address is: Penny Lane Mall, 42 Rehoboth Avenue. Tel. 302-227-7568. Website? http://www.cafepapillon.com. It is open from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. Cash only, please.
Cafe Papillon is owned by a mother and daughter team, Penny and Maya, since 1994, but Cafe Papillon has been in Rehoboth Beach for 30 years. You can also practice your French since they all speak it. French students come every year for the summer season and help them run it.
You can buy French baked goods, sandwiches made with your choice of croissant or French baguette, and very good coffee, as well.
Jerome was cooking the crepes…he is always there. They are made from scratch. Jody and I showed up and there was a line already. Jerome is your typical French, but Jody engaged him in some conversation and little smile here or there, while I was taking pictures.
We both ordered our crepes. I believe Jody’s had ham and cheese. Mine had egg, smoked salmon, cheese, tomato and chives. The common ingredients found in crepes are flour, eggs, milk, butter and a pinch of salt.
So, first the batter is spread on the hot plate.
Then, the egg came along.
Followed by cheese.
Smoked salmon was next.
Tomato was the last addition.
Jerome gently fold it…a garnish of lemon.
And to my outdoor table to enjoy it with a really good cup of cafe mocha. Voila!
Having breakfast with a friend at the start of Memorial Week-End and Summer of 2013!! Priceless!
Au revoir! Talk to you later.!
