“Never worry about the size of your Christmas tree.  In the eyes of children, they are all 30 feet tall.”  larry wilde, the merry book of christmas

dscn0018

The huge tree caught my eye as I was driving on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach.  That’s when I asked myself; where is a semi when I need one?  I knew I needed to stop by and take a look.

Farmer Girl Exotic Gardens is located at 18940 Coastal Highway (Rt. 1) in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  Tel. 302-645-8398  Website?  http://www.farmergirlexoticgardens.net.  This garden center is own by Mary Rash.  It is much more than a garden center, it is also the home of exotic birds, which are for sale.  Mary specializes in domestic bred, hand raised, hand fed babies; “tame ‘n’ talking”.

During the summer the look of this garden center is completely different.  At this time of the year, it turns into a holiday garden center.  If you are in the mood for some holiday cheering, stop by. You will, definitely, feel it.

All the fresh cut trees are North Carolina Fraser Fir trees.  They represent over 90% of all species grown in North Carolina.  The North Carolina Christmas tree industry is ranked second in the nation in the number of trees harvested.  North Carolina Fraser Fir trees are used in the White House.

This year Farmer Girl’s trees look amazing.  Green, healthy, full, and they smell wonderful.  There are all sizes; from little ones to about 14 feet tall.

dscn0052

Some of the fresh cut trees are in front of the store, so you might be able to see them as you drive by.  But their inventory covers the side and back of the store.

dscn0066

Farmer Girl also has two beautiful koi ponds in the back.  They are also decorated for the Holiday Season!!

dscn0068

For the customers that want “forever” trees, wreaths, and garlands, Farmer Girl has plenty to choose from.

dscn0036

dscn0037

The pre-lit “forever” trees come in so many colors and sizes.

dscn0032

Some have “snow”.

dscn0035

A black one?  Tropical, perhaps?

You can find table top decorations, as well as lighted lawn ornaments.

Last December I wrote about this shop, Christmas Spirit, which is an institution here in Rehoboth Beach and in Ocean City, Maryland.  It has been here for 32 years.    The Rehoboth store is located at 161 Rehoboth Ave., Tel. 302-227-6872.  The Manager of the store is Jill Hudson.

The store in Ocean City is located at 3400 Coastal Highway; that store has been there for 21 years.

Today is the 23rd of December.  I cannot believe that I have waited this long.  The tree is not up yet but will be in the morning.

There were a couple of reasons why I went to the Christmas Spirit.  One was to find garlard because I am trying to get away with just lights and garland this year.  Something simple but elegant.

IMG_1020

The other reason is to get into the Christmas spirit.  If this store cannot get you into it, then you might as well hang it up.

IMG_1013

The ladies that work the Christmas Spirit were there, as usual.  It was quiet and they told me I was really last minute this year.  These ladies told me that they are the busiest in July and August, which is the height of the season.

IMG_1017

So many ornaments and decorations and so many themes, as well.  I slowly walked through the store and I took pictures of the different decorated corners.  I gravitated to the trees and decorations that had to do with the ocean.

IMG_1029

I was not there long, since other shopping needed to be accomplished.  But the store did put me on that magical mood of the holidays.

They are there tomorrow in case you need that last minute ornament or gift.  Otherwise, they do open year-round.

It has been so cold at the beaches.  As I typed this post I could hear the wind outdoors but all I want to wish all of you, that have been reading my blog, is a beautiful Christmas, thanks a million, and a Feliz Navidad.

Talk to you later….like tomorrow….

“Autumn is a second Spring when every leaf is a flower.”   albert camus

 100_4804

With that in mind I guess I would have to say that Autumn is my favorite time of the year.  The air is so crisp; but nature’s glow is just amazing.  That’s when I decided that a stop to Tomato Sunshine was the thing to do on such a beautiful day.

 100_4795

Tomato Sunshine is located at 4312 Highway One (Rt. 1 or Ocean Highway) in Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. is 302-226-9533.  The website is www.tomatosunshine.com.  I write about it all the time because visiting this garden center and local produce market puts a smile on my face.

100_4836

The weather has been beautiful in the Delmarva Peninsula for the past 15 days and as I was driving past Tomato Sunshine the colors were incredible.  So, a bee line towards the parking lot is what I took.

100_4832

You will find all kinds of produce at this time of the year, as well; apples, plums and vegetables, among others.

Tomato Sunshine has an excellent website full of information, tips, calendar, etc., so make sure to check it out.  You can contact them through e-mail, as well.  ernie@tomatosunshine.com, donna@tomatosunshine.com, info@tomatosunshine.com, and garland@tomatosunshine.com.

If you have a garden, yard, or containers you know that this is the busiest time of the year.  Looking at my own there is seeding, pruning, soon rakings of leaves and the planting of maybe winter pansies.  It is a little overwhelming, actually.  I guess, I will get it done but at the moment I am still enjoying a lot of my summer flowers.  They have gotten brighter these days.

Every year I find it so interesting to see the variety of pumkins.  Check the ones I found out this year.

Cinderella Pumpkins – Ornamental pumpkin, which is deeply ridged.

 100_4805

White Pumpkin – Becoming increasingly common and are all the rage when it comes to chic autumn decorating.

100_4799

Hubbard Squash – One of the best keeping squashes because of the extra hard skin.

100_4798

Fairytale Pumpkin – The French name is “Musquee de Provence”.  It is a very unique eating and ornamental pumpkin.  The deep orange flesh is very flavored, sweet, thick and firm.

100_4840

Carnival Squash – Cream colored with orange spots or pale green with dark green spots in vertical stripes.

100_4797

The goose gourds are beautiful too and they look just like a goose.  Used in a lot of the fall decorating.

100_4809

Yes, it was nice checking all that Tomato Sunshine has to offer; pretty isn’t it and so lucky to be just around the corner.

Talk to you later and have a really beautiful day….
