Sunday, 9/14 – SECOND ANNUAL LEWES DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL – 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Location? Canalfront Park in Downtown Lewes. Teams, sponsors, vendors and volunteers are more than ready. This festival was created to benefit the capital campaign for the Sussex Academy, which is a public charter school that serves students, at present, grades 6 to 10 in Sussex County. All proceeds will go directly to help pay for the campus and buildings of the Sussex Academy.

Southern Delaware Therapeutic & Recreational Horseback Riding provides equine-assisted therapy, promoting the physical, emotional and educational growth of children and adults with special needs in our community. Friday, 9/19 – LEWES’ THIRD OKTOBERFEST CELEBRATION FRIDAY NIGHT – 4:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Please note that Market Street between Front St. and Second St. will be closed to traffic from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Lewes will create a “beer garden” atmosphere on Market St…..No Beer, though….City’s ordinances. Dogfishhead commemorative glass beer steins sold, beginning, Monday, 9/15, at the Chamber’s visitor center at the Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park can be taken into participating restaurants and presented to receive a discount on Dogfish beer. German cuisine will be featured in many of the restaurants, as well.
Dancing will take place in front of Mary Vessels Park. Bavarian-style dancers will be performing and encouraging the public to participate too. A 10-piece Oompah band, The Happy Wanderers, will be entertaining those gathered to participate in the festivities.

Meet the ladies behind Chicks for Charity Southern Delaware. On the left is Kari Ainsworth, and on the right is Marcie Urgo. Both of them support the charitable organizations in Southern Delaware and on July of 2010 they decided to start their own. On the first charity dinner, there were only about 20 or 25 people. They knew that was a start; taking those first baby steps. Congratulations!! 4 years making a difference in the community!
Chicks for Charity….thrilled to announced that they have surpassed the goals they set themselves to achieve on that July of 2010. Last night, July 15th, look at the crowds…..and take notice….guys were in attendance!!
Once a month Chicks for Charity holds a charitable dinner at Fish On, located at the Villages of Five Points in Lewes, Delaware. For $25.00 you will get a buffet dinner with appetizer and dessert. There is also a Cash Bar available. And, a 50/50 plus raffle items!!

Tuesday evening brought the children to fundraise for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. This non-profit organization started years ago when a girl with cancer by the name of Alexandra “Alex” Scott decided to start fundraising so that doctors could find a cure for childhood cancer. She passed away in 2004 but her family continues in this effort. At the moment over $80 million have been raised throughout the United States…..as the saying goes “When life throws you lemons….it is time to make Lemonade”. More info? The tables were full of raffle items ranging from restaurant certificates, jewelry, services, and plenty of items for the young ones, as well.
Mingling, chatting, and meeting new friends, while raising funds for those that are underserved, and in need. That’s what these evenings are all about; plain and simple.

Grace is now 10 and is cancer free!! Her sister Abby and her friend, Carly, work Alex’s Lemonade Stand in the area. Please take notice that on Saturday, August 2nd, at the Toy Store in Rehoboth Beach, they will be serving Lemonade to those thirsty visitors and residents. You will also find them on Wednesday, August 10th, at the Grub Grocer on Rehoboth Avenue, and later on Saturday, September 13th, they will be at Giant on Coastal Highway. When you see the following sign, please stop by, have a glass of lemonade, knowing that you are helping to find a cure for childhood cancers.

Lewes, Delaware is the oldest settlement in Delaware. It was founded by the Dutch in 1631. It does have a nickname; “The First Town in the First State”. The town was incorporated in 1883. Plenty to do in this coastal town that provides acess to the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean beaches.

The idea is to introduce the public to marine science and the research activities of the college. They have state-of-the-art ocean laboratories where they and Delaware Sea Grant College Program researchers are tackling aspects of environmental challenges such as climate change, sea level rise, renewable energy, fish ecology and harmful algal blooms. July’s charity dinner will benefit: Alex’s Lemonade Stand. This foundation emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). At the age of 4, while receiving chemo, Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help her doctors find a cure for all children with cancer. Between the time of her first stand and the time of her death, when she was 8 years old, Alex reached her goal…she raised $1,000,000. The foundation is led by her parents and bearing her name has raised more than $80 million, funding more than 450 research projects nationally.

Tuesday, 7/15 – STANGO PARK – SUMMER CONCERT SERIES – Free concerts at Stango Park at campus of the Lewes Public Library. Take your chairs, friends and bug spray. Entertainers will be the Milford Community Band. In case of rain, the concert will be held at the Cape Henlopen High School.
What’s Happening at Canalfront Park? The site of the Canalfront Park was a center of activity from the time the earliest Dutch settlers built their homes and launched their ships there in 1631. For hundreds of years the local fishermen kept their boats there. Nowadays, it is also a center for the residents and visitors to enjoy a most scenic part of Historic Lewes.

We are Walking for MS and our team is Beach Babes….yes, that’s the name my friend, Jody, gave our team. To tell you the truth I think it is pretty good. We live at the beach and we are walking and coming together with others who are trying to make a statement about their commitment to creating a world free of MS.
It all started a few months ago, when we attended a Chicks for Charity dinner at Fish On in Lewes, Delaware. This non-profit organization meets once a month and visitors and residents attending have the opportunity to meet one another, have a great dinner, silent auction and raise funds for a local organization. It was on the March dinner that we met Taylor DeMario, Miss Milford. Taylor has a member of ther family who was diagnosed with MS at the age of 20. Needless to say her platform is raising awareness for individuals and families afflicted with MS.
Having seen MS first hand, has made her commitment even stronger. Finding a cure and helping other families deal with this condition is her driving force.
Taylor DeMario will be competing for the title of Miss Delaware to be held on Sunday, June 15th at Dover Downs & Casino in Dover, Delaware. We wish her good luck!!
Taylor was so well spoken and as I listened to her talk I thought of 2 friends that have MS. For them I am walking.
Beach Babes is a small team, but we had to start somewhere. Maybe next year some of the local readers can join us. We got those hats made, we got colorful t-shirts and I think the weather is going to be perfect.
The Delaware Beaches is an excellent area for fundraising….Delaware is a small state but it has a heart of gold.
As we Walk MS 2014 we hope to come together with others, to celebrate and to show the “power of our connections”.

Lewes was settled by the Dutch in 1631. It is located where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is great for beach goers; the bay and the ocean beaches to choose to sit back and relax or play.
Lewes is also a very comfortable walking town. Within approximately half square mile you can stroll, shop, dine, and visit museums or juts enjoy how quaint this coastal and historic town is.

Wednesday, 6/19 through Sunday, 6/23 – DELAWARE BREAKWATER KAYAK ECO-TOURS – These tours are sponsored by the Cape Henlopen State Park. Take a tour of Delaware Bay and the Breakwater in a sit-on-top kayak! The tour is for beginning paddlers, but can be strenuous. 10 a.m. until Noon. All equipment is provided. Just bring water and sunscreen. Secure footwear only; no flip-flops. Ages 8 and up, but solo paddlers must be at least 13 years of age and all participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. “Cirque du Soleil” Worlds Away” – In this fantasy feature, a young woman in a small Mid-Western town goes to a traveling carnival one evening, where she is urged by a silent clown to visit the carnival’s circus and see The Aerialist, the show’s star attraction. She is entranced by The Aerialist, but during his act he misses a catch and falls to the ground. She rushes to help him, but then the ground beneath them gives away and they fall through into the dreamlike world of Cirque du Soleil…..PG rated. Runtime: 91 minutes.
Thursday, 6/20 – SUMMER SOLSTICE – 108 Sun Salutations from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Canalfront Park on 211 Front Street. This event is presented by Soul Yoga. Kick-off the summer out in the sun with a whole lotta sweat!! A celebration of the Summer Solstice. The teachers will guide you through 108 Sun Salutations. Get a team together and tag in and out like a relay…the more the merrier. Everyone is welcomed. $20 suggested donation, which will be collected at the park. All proceeds benefit Friends of the Canalfront Park. Rain or shine, but in the case of thunderstorms, the rain date will be Friday, 6/21.
Friday, 6/21 – HISTORY HAPPY HOURS – Every Friday from June 14th through September 27th, featured presentations will be offered free of charge at 4 p.m. for 20-30 minutes, followed by a question-answer period. At the conclusion of the presentations, a glass of wine will be offered. Indulge in interesting dialog lead by local history buffs, ranging in topic from early explorers of the Delaware Bay to Lewes during the Revolutionary War. Saturday, 6/22 and Sunday, 6/23 – MID-ATLANTIC SEA GLASS & COASTAL ARTS FESTIVAL – It will take place at the Historic Complex of the Lewes Historical Society at Second and Shipcarpenter Streets in Lewes. 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5 per person. Children under 12, free. A wrist band will be issued allowing entrance on both days. Wrist bands can be purchased in advance in Historic Lewes at Sand ‘n’ Stones on Front Street or the Society’s Museum Gif shop at the Ryves Holt House at Second and Mulberry Streets. Last year, about 3,000 visitors attended this event. Sea glass can be found all over the world, but the beaches of the northeast United States, California, northwest England, Mexico, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Nova Scotia Italy and southern Spain are famous for their bounty of sea glass, bottles, bottle lips and stoppers, art glass, marbles, and pottery shards. The best time to look are during spring tides and during the first low tide after a storm.
Saturday, 6/22 – TOUR THE LIGHTHOUSE! – Climb to the top of the Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse and take a trip to the Harbor of Regufe Lighthouse for photos. 10:00 a.m. Reservations are required. Please call 302-644-7046. Tours are subject to change and depend on the weather conditions. I have taken this tour and it was truly amazing. Tours depart from the pier located behind the Cape-May Lewes Ferry Terminal in Lewes. Arrive at leat 15 minutes in advance. No sandals or open toe shoes are allowed.  Kari Ainsworth and Marcie Urgo The first Chicks for Charity Dinner was celebrated in July of 2010. Since that time, a monthly charity dinner has been taking place at Fish On! located at The Villages of Five Points in Lewes, Delaware. Started by two friends, Marcie Urgo and Kari Ainsworth, the group is dedicated to assisting those less fortunate. The majority of the organizations they have helped are essential community resource agencies that aid kids, families, the elderly, abandoned animals and those that are underserved and in need. The donations are changing people’s lives….and the funds raised stay in Sussex County!! Website? http://www.chicksforcharity.us.
For those of us that live in Sussex County (Southern Delaware) is a chance to get together. And, for the new residents in the area, it is a great opportunity to meet new people, and at the same time help raise funds for those are are deeply in need in our area.

Guiding Eyes for the Blind-Delmarva Region of Puppy Raisers…Guiding Eyes for the Blind is an internationally accredited, nonprofit, guide dog school with a 50 plus year legacy, providing the blind and visually impaired with superior Guiding Eyes dogs, training, and lifetime support services. Raising a puppy for Guiding Eyes for the Blind is a real gift of love. A puppy is not born a guide dog, but created through the dedication and commitment of an entire team of individuals. Puppy raisers are the heart and soul of Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Without their hard work, Guiding Eyes would not be able to fulfill their mission to better the lives of blind and visually impaired people.
Their network of individuals are couples, families with children, young adults and senior citizens. The relationship and bond between the raiser and pup will become the foundation for all the life lessons a guide dog needs to master. Raisers provide hours of patient teaching and numerous socialization journeys over a 12 to 16 month period, before they return a well-socialized young adult dog to Guiding Eyes training staff. All of the raiser’s hard work culminates when a blind person receives their priceless gift – a guide dog providing independence, companionship, and mobility.

Meet Kari and Marci. These are the two ladies who are at the helm of Chicks for Charity. On its second year, Chicks for Charity is dedicated to assisting those less fortunate.
It was started by Kari and Marci on July of 2010. Many of the charitable organizations that Chicks for Charity have helped, are essential community resource agencies that aid kids, families, the elderly, abandoned animals, and those that are undeserved and in need.

Once a month an invite arrives to my email. This month’s Chicks for Charity Dinner will be held, as usual, at Fish On!, located at the Villages of Five Points in Lewes, Delaware. Time? 6:30 p.m. Date? Wednesday, 11/28.
This dinner will benefit “Help-Portrait”. This is a global movement of photographers using their time, gear and expertise to give back to those in need. The idea behind Help-Portrait is simple: First, find someone in need. Secondly, take their portrait. Third, print their portrait. Fourth, deliver their portrait. Help Portrait 2012 will take place worldwide on Saturday, December 8th, and locally in Georgetown, Delaware. It is being organized by professional photographer, Keith Mosher and a group of more than 50 volunteers. Website? http://www.help-portrait.com.

Just a few days ahead is the “official” opening of the Delaware Beaches. With that comes the enjoyment of our parks and recreations. Cape Henlopen State Park has wonderful activities for the whole family. In order to enter the Park you need to pay an entry fee or you can buy a pass and use it all year.

New for 2012: The Southern Delaware Botanic Gardens is an all volunteer, grass-roots organization dedicated to creating world-class botanical gardens that inspire and educate. Wednesday, 5/23 – Chicks for Charity Dinner at Fish-On Restaurant located at the Village of Five Points in Lewes. It will benefit Friends Afterschool at Milton Elementary School “FAME”.
Milton Elementary School in the Cape Henlopen School District is partnered with Children & Families First and the University of Delaware Office of Service Learning to create FAME, a non-profit, innovative unique and holistic approach to addressing the needs of all school children. FAME provides activities to maximize their self-esteem and help them achieve their potential. They also offer summer camps, after school clubs, tutoring homework help, and the Strengthening Families Program.
Chicks for Charity was founded by Kari Ainsworth and Marci Urgo. It is a group dedicated to assisting those less fortunate. It was established in Lewes, Delaware. They have aided the residents of Sussex County since its inception. Many of the charitable organizations they have helped are essential community resource agencies.

Thursday, 5/24 – Children’s Beach House Golf Classic – One Day, One Course, One Cause. Kick off the Summer Season while participating in this event that will take place in the beautiful Peninsula on Indian River Bay Golf Course. Friday, 5/25 – Lightship Overfalls Opening Party & Auction – 6:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. This is the official gala kickoff of the Lightship Overfalls’ season. Fun, food and prizes for all!!
Location: Virden Retreat & Conference Center, University of Delaware Lewes Campus on Pilottown Rd.
This event is a major fundraiser in order to help support the Lightship Overfalls and its programs. Tickes are available in advance, online, at http://www.overfalls.org/events/2012_5_25_opening_party.html. They can also be purchased at Lewes Gourmet Puzzles, Kids Ketch, Lewes Chamber or by contacting Evelyn Kyritsis at 302-645-7168.
Lightship Overfalls is one of only 17 remaining lightships out of a total of 179 built from 1820 – 1952. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2011. It is also one of 7 lightships still open to the public in the U.S. Visit www.overfalls.org for more information.
Saturday, 5/26 – 9/22 – It is the Historic Lewes Farmers’ Market 2012 Opening Season. 8 a.m. until Noon. Every Saturday. Location? Lewes Historical Society Complex at 110 Chipcarpenter Street in downtown Lewes.
Note: There are 3 dates when the market will be held at Shields Elementary in Lewes: June 23rs, July 14th and August 4th.

Sunday, 5/27 – If you are a history buff, a veteran, or interested in learning about the Delaware Shore and WWII, then this might be just up your alley. Lantern Tour of Fort Miles will be on this coming Sunday from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Tour the gun battery by lantern light and learn how soldiers defended our coast. It is for ages 10 and up with an adult. It is also limited to 30 people. Pre-registration is a must and it is required. $5 per person. Call 302-645-6852 to register and for more info.
Fort Miles is inside Cape Henlopen State Park. Fort Miles was a key piece in the nation’s coastal defense during WWII. In April of 2005 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
