“Through participation led support groups, educational workshops and mind/body classes, people affected by cancer learn vital skills that enable them to regain control, reduce isolation and restore hope regardless of the stage of the disease.” The Cancer Support Community is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides suport, education and hope to people with all kinds of cancer and to their loved ones, as well. ALL programs are offered at no cost to cancer patients, survivors, and their family members.
I have plenty of friends with different kinds of cancer. Come to think of it, I don’t think there is anyone that has not been touched by this physically and emotionally devastating disease. Unpredictable to say the least. My friends that have gone through the initial diagnosis, surgeries, treatments and finally remission say that it does change you. After going through something like that you don’t sweat the little trivial things of every day life.
 
The Cancer Support Community offers so many programs and the participants form friendships and connect with one another. The Cancer Support Community is busy fundraising this year. The following events are coming up and I think it would a great opportunity to participate in some of them. You are new in Southern Delaware? SATURDAY, MAY 14th – Sussex Survive & Thrive Walk 2016. Last year my team participated in this walk. We had a blast. Our team was called 16 Miles or Bust! Yes, the walk was 16 miles. This is a big fundraising event for Cancer Support Community Delaware. There are opportunities for sponsorships..from $300 to $7,500 for this particular walk!! More info? And, Yes that was the team!! It was for such a great cause and some of our team walkers were cancer survivors and others were walking for a loved one that had passed away. We started early in the a.m. and finished at the 16 Mile Brewery in Georgetown.
Now is 2016 and a new walk is almost around the corner. This year the walk is called Sussex Survive & Thrive Walk 2016 and it has been tweaked. Instead of the 16 miles there will be 10 miles. You may also do a 3 1/2 walk and a 1 Mile Survivors Walk. For all information regarding the walk, start a team, etc. etc. please visit http://www.cancersupportdelaware.org.
The walk will begin at Gordon’s Pond in Cape Henlopen State Park in Rehoboth. Check in will be at 7:00 a.m. and the walk will begin at 7:15 a.m. The 3 1/2 Mile Walk will check in at 8:45 a.m. and the walk will start at 9:15 a.m. The 1 Mile Survivors Walk will begin at Norfolk Street & the Rehoboth Boardwalk, with a check-in at 9:45 and the walk will begin at 10:15 a.m.
The Covertte Club will also be available to give rides to walkers that might want to take a break!!
The FINISH LINE will be at the Forgotten Mile Ale House, who is sponsoring the Walk, for an After-Walk Celebration from 10:30 until Noon with food, and drinks and….AWARDS!!
Free Shuttle Transportation will be available back to the Gordon’s Pond Parking Lot beginning at 11 a.m. on a first come, first served basis. Parking Passes for the Walk will be included in your Walk Packet, but please try to car pool if at all possible.
You may pick up Walk Packets at the Cancer Support Community at 18947 John J. Williams Hwy, Suite 312 in Rehoboth Beach. Wednesday and Thursday May 11th and May 12th from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. or on Friday, May 13th from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Packets will also be available on Saturday, May 14th at walk check-in.

Meet the ladies behind Chicks for Charity Southern Delaware. On the left is Kari Ainsworth, and on the right is Marcie Urgo. Both of them support the charitable organizations in Southern Delaware and on July of 2010 they decided to start their own. On the first charity dinner, there were only about 20 or 25 people. They knew that was a start; taking those first baby steps. Congratulations!! 4 years making a difference in the community!
Chicks for Charity….thrilled to announced that they have surpassed the goals they set themselves to achieve on that July of 2010. Last night, July 15th, look at the crowds…..and take notice….guys were in attendance!!
Once a month Chicks for Charity holds a charitable dinner at Fish On, located at the Villages of Five Points in Lewes, Delaware. For $25.00 you will get a buffet dinner with appetizer and dessert. There is also a Cash Bar available. And, a 50/50 plus raffle items!!

Tuesday evening brought the children to fundraise for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. This non-profit organization started years ago when a girl with cancer by the name of Alexandra “Alex” Scott decided to start fundraising so that doctors could find a cure for childhood cancer. She passed away in 2004 but her family continues in this effort. At the moment over $80 million have been raised throughout the United States…..as the saying goes “When life throws you lemons….it is time to make Lemonade”. More info? The tables were full of raffle items ranging from restaurant certificates, jewelry, services, and plenty of items for the young ones, as well.
Mingling, chatting, and meeting new friends, while raising funds for those that are underserved, and in need. That’s what these evenings are all about; plain and simple.

Grace is now 10 and is cancer free!! Her sister Abby and her friend, Carly, work Alex’s Lemonade Stand in the area. Please take notice that on Saturday, August 2nd, at the Toy Store in Rehoboth Beach, they will be serving Lemonade to those thirsty visitors and residents. You will also find them on Wednesday, August 10th, at the Grub Grocer on Rehoboth Avenue, and later on Saturday, September 13th, they will be at Giant on Coastal Highway. When you see the following sign, please stop by, have a glass of lemonade, knowing that you are helping to find a cure for childhood cancers.

Please attend and learn about the Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps program and the wonderful men and women who have committed a year to service. January’s Chicks for Charity is raising funds on that evening for Delaware’s Habitat for Humanity, which program includes members from right here in Sussex County, from Delaware at large, and from states across the nation. Members are united behind the goals to make our people safer, smarter and healthier.
BIRDING FIELD TRIP AT PRIME HOOK – January 23rd from 8:30 a.m. until Noon. This is the first birding field trip of the 2014 season at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge. The trips will originate from the Refuge Headquarters office and will run for about 3 hours. Since 85% of the bird species found on the Refuge are migrants, every month of the year brings the opportunity for different species of birds to be observed. You should take your binoculars. The Refuge has a few pairs of loaner binoculars if needed. Be prepared to walk up to a mile and please dress appropriately. In the event of light rain, the trip will still go. The Refuge is a 10,144 acre tract of land officially established in 1963 under the authority of the Migratory Bird Conservation Act. It is located on the west shore of the Delaware Bay, approx. 22 miles southeast of Dover. It is an important stopover site for migratory birds as they travel up and down the Atlantic Flyway.

This group will meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month and participants will discuss a selected mystery book. Open to all.
COOKING CLASSES IN FEBRUARY WITH CHEF ANGELA MERSHON – Enjoy learning some quick and simple solutions to cooking meals you thought were only available in a arestaurant . In the comfort of the Blue Water House kitchen, you can relax and socialize with new friends while learning and dining on delicious food that you will know how to easily make in your own kitchen. Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. at Blue Water House on 407 East Market St. Participants will receive the meal, recipes, and printed info. to take home.

Abracadinner Cooking Classes with Chef Kris. Chef Kris has plenty of classes. The cost per class is $55. The classes are held in Kris’ kitchen. Each hands-on class will last 90 minutes to 2 hours. Join us to change your focus and make your health and energy levels a priority. Part Two will include follow up of your changes and cooking some wonderful recipes, to boot! Tuesday, 1/29 – 5-Course Beer Dinner at Matt’s Fish Camp, located at 28635 Coastal Highway, North Bethany Beach, featuring Evolution Brewery, which is located in Salisbury, Maryland. A representative from Evolution will be on-site for this event to provide insight into the complexities of the beers and to discuss the creation of the product.
The dinner will feature a five-course, small plate menu by Chef Casey Cunningham: Spicy Shrimp Slider, toasted brioche bun and olive skewer, Fish Camp Oyster Fritters, brown butter bacon aioli and baby pickles, Organic Greens Salad, bleu cheese sweet onion crisps and cracked pepper vinaigrette, Crisp Pork Belly, fried quail egg, Fish Camp hash brown and stout ranchero sauce, and Black Bottom Cheese Cake, melted espresso chocolate. Meet Kari and Marci. These are the two ladies who are at the helm of Chicks for Charity. On its second year, Chicks for Charity is dedicated to assisting those less fortunate.
It was started by Kari and Marci on July of 2010. Many of the charitable organizations that Chicks for Charity have helped, are essential community resource agencies that aid kids, families, the elderly, abandoned animals, and those that are undeserved and in need.

Once a month an invite arrives to my email. This month’s Chicks for Charity Dinner will be held, as usual, at Fish On!, located at the Villages of Five Points in Lewes, Delaware. Time? 6:30 p.m. Date? Wednesday, 11/28.
This dinner will benefit “Help-Portrait”. This is a global movement of photographers using their time, gear and expertise to give back to those in need. The idea behind Help-Portrait is simple: First, find someone in need. Secondly, take their portrait. Third, print their portrait. Fourth, deliver their portrait. Help Portrait 2012 will take place worldwide on Saturday, December 8th, and locally in Georgetown, Delaware.  Never get tired of taking its picture. A quaint historic town, Lewes, is an attraction for many visiting the Delaware Beaches. Lots of restaurants, shops and plenty to do. It is a great week-end get-away; only a couple hours from Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
If you are visiting Lewes, this is what’s going on this week-end.
Until Sunday, 9/9 – The Kalmar Nyckel is docked at the Cape-May Lewes Ferry Terminal. Tours, Day Sail, and Even a Pirate Sail are available. All you have to do is check their schedule by visiting http://www.kalmarnyckel.org/bookasail.asp. The original Kalmar Nyckel was one of America’s pioneering colonial ships. The present one serves as Delaware’s seagoing Goodwill Ambassador.
 This Memorial is at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal in Lewes. If you happen to see this little, very innocent, seagull…and you are having something to eat at the On The Rocks Bar & Grill right there at the Cape May Lewes Ferry….he will steal your food. Does not matter if you are a child or a more matured individual. I saw him. If he could have lifted a hamburger, he would have done so. So, you have been warned.
Friday, 9/7 – Lewes “History Happy Hour” – Jim Bertholet presents ” The Life and Work of a Surfmen in the US Life-Saving Service 1870’s-1915″, at the Lewes Life-Saving Station at the Canal and Front Street next to the Lightship Overfalls. Mr. Bertholet is a life-long history buff who grew up on the Jersey shore and always had a particular interest in maritime history, especially the US Life-Saving Service and US Lighthouses.

Saturday, 9/8 – The Seventh Annual Chocolate Tasting in The Park, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Biden Center in Cape Henlopen State Park. $5.00 admission gives you 6 tastings. Please note that admission to the State Park is still in effect.
Sunday, 9/9 – 3rd Annual Treat the Beat sponsored by the Beebe Medical Foundation. 5K Walk. Location? At the George H.P. Smith Park at Blockhouse Pond behind Beebe Medical Center. The 5K Walk travels through Lewes and raises funds for Cardiac and Vascular Services at Beebe Medical Center. In 2011, $17,000 were raise from this event, and a portion of the funds were used by Beebe’s Cardiac Rehab Dept. to purchase a recumbent cross training machine. Participation is free but all walkers must register. All participants are encouraged to donate or raise donations.

Monday, 9/10 – At the Zwaanendael Museum, located at 102 Kings Highway, in Lewes. His Majesty’s Sloop DeBraak, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Learn its history. The DeBraak capsized on May 25, 1798. The program includes a trip to the hull facility near Cape Henlopen State Park. It will be an interpreter-led tour of the ship’s remains. $10 in advance by making a reservation on the website http://www.history.delaware.gov.

The Town of Lewes, Delaware is located on the lower reach of the Delaware Bay. It is considered an ocean resort; the ocean is nearby at Cape Henlopen.
