There is nothing better than a picnic. Today was a favorite day at Canalfront Park located at 211 Front St. in Historic Lewes, Delaware. It is an annual event. There were over 800 people in attendance. What a fabulous day it was. No humidity, blue skies…just perfect for an outdoor picnic. A time to relax with the community, to forget the news of the day. Picture perfect….not many words are necessary.
When visiting Lewes, please do check the website, http://www.lewescanalfrontpark.org. They are offering so many events and activities; Yoga in the Park, Zumba in the Park, Yoga Summer Solstice on Sunday, 6/21, Cinema by the Canal is starting in July, and Concerts by the Canal are also starting in July. Lewes is such a picturesque town. The site of the Canalfront Park has been in existence since 1631. It is where long ago the earliest Dutch settlers created their homes and built and launched their ships.
My friend, Cindi, and I were looking forward to this picnic. Last year was the first time we attended and it was just amazing. Lewes’ restaurants were serving their specialties. We were ready.
First things first….stopping at Dogfish Head. They were serving 2 types of beers; one heavier than the other, but both delicious. That’s Cindi!!
A second stop at Agave.
They were serving their Fresh Ceviche which I had and loved…
They also had their Beef Tenderloin Chili….by far this is the best Chili made with beef tenderloin. It was a bit cool today; perfect.
Nectar’s offerings were outstanding. Quinoa Cups, which I had. The super grain was excellent.
 
Chicken Salad Sliders! I think chicken salad is so good for summer, don’t you?
Nectar’s PB & J Meatballs are locals’ favorites.
Nectar is also a Juice Bar….offering, here, at the picnic, Carrot-Apple-Ginger Juice.
From Jerry’s we tried their Shrimp and Crab Deviled Eggs….I liked the shrimp deviled eggs the best.
Visitors coming to the Delaware Beaches love crabcakes….Jerry’s are very popular. For the Picnic in the Park they offered Crabcake Sliders.

And they were also serving Lobster Salad Sandwiches.
Plenty of fun for the Kids…games, balloons, cotton candy.

Cotton Candy…..when I was a young child I had a small cotton candy machine. It worked!! So seeing this one at the picnic for the second year in a row…. childhood memories.
 
The Lightship Overvalls always a fixture at Canalfront Park. Lightship Overfalls is one of only 17 remaining Lightships out of 179 built from 1820 – 1952.
In 2011 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. Its birthday is Wednesday, 6/17, and a free event will be taking place. The public is invited from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the ship. Please check http://www.overfalls.org for tours, events and historic fact about this Lightship.
Cindi and I decided to take a spot under one of the tents to enjoy some tastings. I was just telling Cindi that I have been in the area for so many years and for some reason I did not know a single person there…..Oh no…I did, Richard!! He proceeded to take a seat and we continued the conversation.
I almost forgot to mention the DJ. He was so good. He moved around, kept the music and the tempo just right…even announced the raffle winners!!
And something you usually do not see in Lewes…a Blimp!
Not every day is a picnic, but today, celebrating my friend’s birthday…priceless!!

Lewes, Delaware is the oldest settlement in Delaware. It was founded by the Dutch in 1631. It does have a nickname; “The First Town in the First State”. The town was incorporated in 1883. Plenty to do in this coastal town that provides acess to the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean beaches.

The idea is to introduce the public to marine science and the research activities of the college. They have state-of-the-art ocean laboratories where they and Delaware Sea Grant College Program researchers are tackling aspects of environmental challenges such as climate change, sea level rise, renewable energy, fish ecology and harmful algal blooms. Tuesday, 7/15 – CHICKS FOR CHARITY – Gentlemen: You are invited too!! Don’t be shy. Once a month Chicks for Charity takes place at Fish On, located at the Villages of Five Points in Lewes. It opens at 6:30 p.m. $25/person includes gratuity…cash bar available. You get 2 delicious entrees to choose from along with appetizer and dessert. July’s charity dinner will benefit: Alex’s Lemonade Stand. This foundation emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). At the age of 4, while receiving chemo, Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help her doctors find a cure for all children with cancer. Between the time of her first stand and the time of her death, when she was 8 years old, Alex reached her goal…she raised $1,000,000. The foundation is led by her parents and bearing her name has raised more than $80 million, funding more than 450 research projects nationally.

Tuesday, 7/15 – STANGO PARK – SUMMER CONCERT SERIES – Free concerts at Stango Park at campus of the Lewes Public Library. Take your chairs, friends and bug spray. Entertainers will be the Milford Community Band. In case of rain, the concert will be held at the Cape Henlopen High School.
What’s Happening at Canalfront Park? The site of the Canalfront Park was a center of activity from the time the earliest Dutch settlers built their homes and launched their ships there in 1631. For hundreds of years the local fishermen kept their boats there. Nowadays, it is also a center for the residents and visitors to enjoy a most scenic part of Historic Lewes.

Saving Mr. Banks is an untold true story of how Walt Disney spent 20 years trying to obtain the rights to author P.L. Travers’ treasured story so that Mary Poppins could be brought to the big screen. They have great recipes, plus you can see ahead of time what will be happening on that particular Saturday.

It was my first time at the 3rd Annual Picnic in The Park at Canalfront Park, in Lewes, Delaware. One of my usual suspects, Cindi, came with me. My first thought was Small Town U.S.A. To see everyone sitting around, chatting, smiling and enjoying one beautiful day by the water in the First Town of the First State. This photo says it all.
Picnic in The Park was held on Sunday, June 1st, from Noon until 3 p.m. at Canalfront Park on Front Street in Lewes. The admission, if purchased online, was $10, otherwise, $15 at the door. Kids 12 and under were $5. Food and beverage tickets were $2 each at the event. I bought $20 for Cindi and I.
Lewes restaurants were under their tents offering visitors their best and most well known delicacies: Agave, Buttery, Gilligan’s, Half Full, Irish Eyes, Jerry’s, Kindle, Nectar, Rose and Crown, Savannah Deli and Grille, Striper Bites, Touch of Italy, and 2 Dips. These restaurants gathered around the park and from beef tenderloin chili and fresh cornbread to lobster salad sandwiches….all you had to do is give them 1 or 2 tickets, depending on the food and let the tastings begin.
Plenty of tables to sit, eat, and listen to the music.
 Agave  Nectar  Dogfish Head The kids were having a blast with games you never see anymore.
The Cow Milking Contest….that, I had not seen before, but was so funny. It had a lot of interest.
Cindi and I loved the Cotton Candy. It was just made…so light and airy and complimentary. As a young child I had a cotton candy machine; a small version of the one at the park. Colorful sugar made beautiful cotton candy.
I love the photo of the 2 Cotton Candy Girls….right by Lightship Overfalls, they were experts at the Cotton Candy machine….and so typical.

Lightship Overfalls is one of only 17 remaining lightships out of 179 built from 1820 to 1952. A National Historic Landmark designation was given to “Big Red” in 2011. It is one of 7 lightships in this country still open to the public. It is also a perfectly restored example of a now extinct fleet of floating lighthouses.
A lightship is a floating lighthouse; aiding navigation at night…it has a horn to warn mariners in fog, and a radio beacon for longer range identification.
The mission of the Overfalls Foundation is to “collect, preserve, honor and teach the maritime history of Lewes, the Delaware Bay, and the coastal region, using the Lightship Overfalls, the American Lightship Museum, as well as Delaware Maritime Hall of Fame”.
Lightship Overfalls is located at Canalfront Park, 219 Pilottown Rd., in Historic Lewes, Delaware. Tel. 302-644-8050. This is a must stop visit while in Lewes. Saturday, 5/18 – Lewes Celebrates Maritime Day 2013!! 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. May 22nd is National Maritime Day. It was first declared by Congress in 1933. It honors the contributions of the American merchant marine, civilians who have defended the freedom of the United States since 1775. During WWII they executed the largest sealift the world has ever seen. Its observance also honors the maritime industry. The Cape May – Lewes Ferry will host a local version of the celebration. Location? The Lewes Ferry Terminal. There will be a Remembrance Ceremony at 1:00 p.m. Engine Room and Bridge Tours, Maritime Displays…and food and drinks available. Rain or shine!
 Canalfront Park Saturday, 5/18 – First tour of Tour the Lighthouse!! Walk in The Steps of The Keeper…Reservations are required. Climb to the top of the Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse and take a trip to the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse for photos. Tours are subject to change. Check the weather. Please call 302-644-7046 for reservations. You may visit the website to make a reservation and check their summer tour schedule…http://www.delawarebaylights.org/tours.html. Tours depart from the pier located behind the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal in Lewes. Free parking is available in the Foot Passenger Lot. Only 24 tickets will be sold per tour. Please arrive 15 minutes early. Life jackets are provided and must be worn. No sandals or open toe shoes allowed. and children must be at least 13 years old, except on the dates noted. One child per adult. The Harbor of Refuge Light Station is presently closed for repairs. However, tours will sail by for a close view and photos.
Saturday, 5/18 – Pooches in the Park – 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. This is a festive and new event which caters for both, the 2-legged and 4-legged family members. It will be held at Canalfront Park. This sounds like so much fun!! The day will feature a doggie spa for massages and acupuncture to drool over, pet portraits, specialized vendors, games and prizes. Obedience, agility and dock diving skills will be showcased. This event is sponsored by the Friends of Canalfront Park, Savannah Animal Hospital and P.U.P.S. (Pawsitively Unique Pet Shop in Lewes). Entry fee is $5 per dog, payable on-site or on-line http://www.lewescanalfrontpark.org. One dog per handler is requested. Bring your entire family; no charge for the human element.
I stopped the other day at Lewes Canalfront Park, which is about 3 acres located on Front Street on the banks of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. Popular events are held here year-round. There is parking, benches, and walking paths, perfect to enjoy the beauty of Lewes. “When the old boatyard site was being considered for retail and residential development, local residents and the Greater Lewes Foundation raised funds to develop the land as a park. The Firends of the Lewes Canalfront Park supports the programs of the Park while the City of Lewes provides the maintenance. New members and volunteers are always needed.

Friday, 6/15 – Sunday, 6/17 – Lewes Boat Builder Program – An all day event. From the 1600s until the mid 1800s hundreds of vessels of all sizes were built on Lewes Creek. The Lewes Historical Society invites you to be part of their Family Boatbuilding Week-end over Father’s Week-end.
Wooden boats called “Bevin Skiffs” will be built by the participating groups and families. On Saturday, from 10 until 4 p.m. come to the Lewes Lifesaving Station to view more than 16 wooden boats made by wood boat hobbyists. After construction, the groups will launch their new handmade Bevin Skiffs at the Lewes Canalfront Park, located at 211 Front St., on Sunday at around 1 p.m.

It is a self-guided tour of 9 private gardens and one public garden in the historic seaport town of Lewes. You will also find a garden market with vendors specializing in garden related retail items, a free lecture on a gardening related topic and working artists in the gardens. Food Tent in the Park.

Those who sign up will be getting a free pedometer from Beebe Medical Center to record your steps. Lewes Steps Out for Fitness attemps to record millions of steps by its participants during the course of the summer. The program is free and everyone is invited to participate. If you cannot register on Sunday, 6/17, stop by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce beginning on June 18th to sign up. The programs will be held at Zwaanendael Park, located at 102 Kings Highway, Stango Park located at 111 Adams Ave. at Kings Highway, behind the Lewes Library, and at the Lewes Historical Society located at 110 Shipcarpenter Street.
Chautauqua takes its name from a series of adult education programs first held at Lake Chautauqua, NY, during the late 19th century. It was reborn in the 1970s. Re-enactors take on the persona of celebrated historical figures, speaking and interacting with audiences.

Just a few days ahead is the “official” opening of the Delaware Beaches. With that comes the enjoyment of our parks and recreations. Cape Henlopen State Park has wonderful activities for the whole family. In order to enter the Park you need to pay an entry fee or you can buy a pass and use it all year.

Wednesday, 5/23 – Chicks for Charity Dinner at Fish-On Restaurant located at the Village of Five Points in Lewes. It will benefit Friends Afterschool at Milton Elementary School “FAME”.
Milton Elementary School in the Cape Henlopen School District is partnered with Children & Families First and the University of Delaware Office of Service Learning to create FAME, a non-profit, innovative unique and holistic approach to addressing the needs of all school children. FAME provides activities to maximize their self-esteem and help them achieve their potential. They also offer summer camps, after school clubs, tutoring homework help, and the Strengthening Families Program.
Chicks for Charity was founded by Kari Ainsworth and Marci Urgo. It is a group dedicated to assisting those less fortunate. It was established in Lewes, Delaware. They have aided the residents of Sussex County since its inception. Many of the charitable organizations they have helped are essential community resource agencies.
Dinner on Wednesday at Fish On will start at 6:30 p.m. Two delicious entrees to choose from along with appetizer and dessert. $25 per person includes gratuity. Cash or checks only payable to Fish-On. Cash Bar available.

Friday, 5/25 – Lightship Overfalls Opening Party & Auction – 6:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. This is the official gala kickoff of the Lightship Overfalls’ season. Fun, food and prizes for all!!
Location: Virden Retreat & Conference Center, University of Delaware Lewes Campus on Pilottown Rd.
This event is a major fundraiser in order to help support the Lightship Overfalls and its programs. Tickes are available in advance, online, at http://www.overfalls.org/events/2012_5_25_opening_party.html. They can also be purchased at Lewes Gourmet Puzzles, Kids Ketch, Lewes Chamber or by contacting Evelyn Kyritsis at 302-645-7168.
Lightship Overfalls is one of only 17 remaining lightships out of a total of 179 built from 1820 – 1952. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2011. It is also one of 7 lightships still open to the public in the U.S. Visit www.overfalls.org for more information.
Saturday, 5/26 – 9/22 – It is the Historic Lewes Farmers’ Market 2012 Opening Season. 8 a.m. until Noon. Every Saturday. Location? Lewes Historical Society Complex at 110 Chipcarpenter Street in downtown Lewes.
Note: There are 3 dates when the market will be held at Shields Elementary in Lewes: June 23rs, July 14th and August 4th.

Sunday, 5/27 – If you are a history buff, a veteran, or interested in learning about the Delaware Shore and WWII, then this might be just up your alley. Lantern Tour of Fort Miles will be on this coming Sunday from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Tour the gun battery by lantern light and learn how soldiers defended our coast. It is for ages 10 and up with an adult. It is also limited to 30 people. Pre-registration is a must and it is required. $5 per person. Call 302-645-6852 to register and for more info.
Fort Miles is inside Cape Henlopen State Park. Fort Miles was a key piece in the nation’s coastal defense during WWII. In April of 2005 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
