Crystal Restaurant, Locals’ Hangout, Breakfast & Lunch, Full Bar, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches….Open on New Year’s Day!!

dscn0833

This post is for my friends that “hangout” at Crystal every time we get the chance.  A little displaced, we are, at this time of the year.  But, every time they are in my thoughts when I eat at Crystal.  They know who they are.

Crystal is located at 37300 Rehoboth Avenue.  Tel. 302-227-1088.  It was my last breakfast of 2012.  Since my friends were not here to join me, I brought second best; my two sons.

Crystal was totally packed.  Visitors and locals making a special breakfast morning something to be remembered.  Great weather too!!

I had to be fast with my camera.  We chose the following.

Crab Benedict, using crab meat instead of Canadian Bacon.  This dish is packed with crab meat.  It is always served with that tiny steak knife.  Too funny!

dscn0830

A Norwegian Benedict, using smoked salmon instead of Canadian Bacon.  It was a huge portion….a little doggy bag for later on.

dscn0828

French Toast was my choice.  I have not had it in a long time.  It’s a good one at Crystal!!

dscn0831

Never fails; well done scrapple.  Sorry, but I do love it.

dscn0832

A side order of Creamed Chip Beef for the table almost did us in.

dscn0829

A perfect breakfast….enjoying the holidays in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware!!

Note:  Crystal serves breakfast and lunch.  Breakfast sandwiches, cereal, side orders, eggs, omelettes, a kids’ corner, salads, grilled sandwiches, specialty burgers, sandwiches….and on and on.

Happy New Year’s!!

Mid Summer Night, Rehoboth Beach, Eating Tamales at Modern Mixture, Delaware Beaches

Penny Lane in Downtown Rehoboth Beach

Penny Lane in Downtown Rehoboth Beach

Dowtown Rehoboth Beach looked beautiful tonight.  It is mid summer, almost a full moon.  Summer’s going fast but, here at the beach, time stands still, it seems that way.  We love it.

What a coincidence!! Some of us that like to eat, write, and photograph what we eat happened to be at the same place almost at the same time.  Bob, Allen and I were at Modern Mixture to eat Tamales.  We had the choice of so many restaurants in Downtown Rehoboth Beach but this one was our choice.  After meeting Leo on Sunday I could not wait to go back.  His casual restaurant fits perfectly with our beach atmosphere.

Bob, Allen, and I are on the same page.  We want you to try Leo’s food.  It is light, fresh, delicious and you will become a fan, as well.  Leo deserves this extra post, his tamales were awesome!!

Modern Mixture is located at 62A Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. 302-227-0600.  Website? http://www.modern-mixture.com.

My husband has to eat gluten free.  The tamales were gluten free, so he was in seventh haven.  Leo also has other foods that are gluten free.  If you have a question, just give him a call.

I decided to try another smoothie.  It had avocado and the rest was the addition of a fruit cup; melon, grapes, pineapple.  Again, so refreshing!!

dscn6213

We ate so many tamales.  Okay, here it is.  I ate 4 tamales.  And, a few bites of the dessert tamales too.  I know, I know…a few extra laps around the circle.

Leo brought 3 tamales each.  The Salsa Verde, Chicken and Mole, and Jalapeno and Cheese.

dscn6215

My favorite was the mole.  My husband loved the Jalapeno and Cheese.  We even ordered 2 for carry out.

The dessert tamales were interesting.  One had coconut and pineapple and the other had raisins.  Both, very good.  We decided to eat a little bit of each and take the rest home.  Afterall, how many tamales can one eat?

dscn6216Soooo, what are you waiting for?  Have a good one!!

Gracias Leo.  And to Allen and Bob…so nice meeting you!!

Modern Mixture, Restaurant, Rehoboth Beach, Review, Breakfast, Smoothies, Coffee Bar, Burritos, Mexican Tortas, Salads, Kids Menu, Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, New Eatery in Town

“The demand for ethnic foods in the United States reflects the Nation’s changing diversity, as well as, its development over time.”   national restaurant association

And isn’t that the truth?  Ethnic foods are probably one of my favorites; the spices, aromas, from different countries put you in a certain mood….warm and cozy or that heat that kicks your taste buds up a notch.

I dragged one of my sons to Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  He was willing, knowing that food was the reward.  My sons are foodies.  They can eat stones; they have always been great eaters; adventurous is the way I would qualify them.  So off to join the many on the road already on Rt. 1.  Good thing we knew how to get around the traffic.

dscn6164dscn6165

We were heading to Modern Mixture.  No idea where it was; just that it was located at 62A Rehoboth Avenue.  Midway through the ocean block.  We did not miss it.  Bright colors pulling you in.  If you are facing the ocean, it will be on the right hand side.  Great to see the water bowls for the four legged friends too.  The telephone is 302-227-0600  Website? http://www.modern-mixture.com.  You can find them of Facebook and Twitter.

The restaurant is long, with tables and benches on either side. It is a super casual eatery.  No alcohol is served.

dscn6163

At the end of the hall you will find Leo and his staff.  Leo is the owner of Modern Mixture, which only opened in Downtown Rehoboth Beach 2 months ago.  He told me that it has been a process, but a good one.  Now he would like people to know where he is; to know that he makes, practically, everything in-house, and that his food is tasty and delicious; reasonably priced too.

I spoke to Leo in Spanish.  I love it when I can give this courtesy to someone that speaks my native language.  Leo was great and so friendly.

dscn6160

On his menu you will find Mexican Tortas, which are hot sandwiches; Torta Cubana, Torta de Milanesa, Torta Libanesa and a Torta del Chato.  The Burritos will be: a Simple Burrito with your choice of meats, Vegetarian, Burrito Mixto, Burrito Moderno, and a Burrito Chido with pulled adobado pork, refried beans, guacamole and pico de gallo.  Falafel, sope which is a homemade tortilla, lightly fried, topped with refried beans, homemade chorizo, lettuce, radishes, onions, sour cream and queso fresco.  Salsa of your choice on top.  The always present guacamole and even a kids menu.  A little bit of “mixture” for everyone.

dscn6155dscn6156

A salsa bar to serve your own sauces, all homemade.

dscn6158dscn6177

My son wanted a breakfast burrito.  So he decided to customize it with egg whites, avocado, bacon, and refried beans.  It came with fresh fruit.  An Americano coffee for his drink.

dscn6174

It was a beautiful burrito and it was sooooo good.  Let’s put it this way, he said “I will definitely come back here”.

dscn6176

I wanted a smoothie.  Leo asked me if I wanted a healthy one.  Of course!!  My smoothie was made with a whole avocado, mango, pineapple, and spring mix salad.  Only ice was added.  It was so refreshing and I was so surprised that no other liquids were included.

dscn6170

Leo suggested I give his fish tacos a try.  Either fish or shrimp.  I ordered one of each.  They were beer battered and the fish used was wahoo.  They were served with a bean, tomato and corn salsa.  Chips also.  Lately, I have been checking out the fish tacos and Leo presented them in a flour tortilla, and a tasty sauce.  The fish and the shrimp were crunchy on the outside and very moist inside.  Just very good, indeed.

dscn6172

I, had to ask, I just had to….Do you have corn tortillas?  A lot of people do prefer them to the flour ones, but my question was because I wanted to find out if someone with a gluten allergy could eat at Modern Mixture.  At present, he only has flour tortillas.  The reason being that the corn tortillas he has tried, have not been to his satisfaction.  Looking for a supplier.

Regarding eating gluten free.  He makes soups and tamales that are gluten free.  All you have to do is call him ahead of time and find out what’s on the menu and ask.

By the way, Monday, 7/30 he will have tamales…just in case you are interested.

Leo was not going to let us go without trying his fried ice cream.  My downfall is ice cream and I do love it fried.  His were perfect for sharing; it was a large order.  So good; the dough around it was still so warm.  Oh well, hitting the gym is an understatement.

dscn6178

Word of mouth is an amazing advertising tool….stop by and let me know how you like it.

Have a great week!!  Talk to you later.

Eating in…Rehoboth Beach, GreenMan, Juice Bar, Bistro, Restaurant, Review, 2012 Season, Delaware Beaches

dscn4096

Finally, Jody and I were able to make it to GreenMan.  Can’t wait for this very popular breakfast and lunch spot to open every day.  At the moment GreenMan is opening Thursdays through Sundays from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

dscn4093

GreenMan Juice Bar & Bistro is located at 12 Wilmington Ave., right on the ocean block.  Tel. 302-227-4909.  Keep that number because you can order take-out, including whole quiches, as well.

dscn4098

Some of the Rehoboth Beach restaurants are located in old “cottages” that give them character and distinction.  GreenMan is one of such restaurants.  It has been spruced up to tackle another summer season at the Delaware Beaches.

dscn4088

The porch at GreenMan is sought after.  The restaurant is small; inside tables and a small ordering bar.

dscn4091

There are blackboards mentioning the daily offerings, besides their menu.  The staff is friendly and some have been there a long time.

dscn4094

dscn4095

I wanted to order a shot of their wheat grass. I feel that when I come to GreenMan I need to be eating as healthy as possible.

On that particular day they did not have it so I decided to get the Super Juice.  It had carrot, apple, spinach and beets.  I love beets and that was the primary taste on this very colorful juice.

dscn4083

I think Jody had either the Hawaiian Escape or the Strawberry Seduction.  I can’t remember, but definitely bananas were the primary fruits.  You can tell by the color of our juices which one was hers and which was mine.

Throughout the day GreenMan serves gourmet sandwiches, salads, homemade soups, quiches, and burgers.  Teas, smoothies and organic drinks are always favorites.

Jody decided on a tomato and spinach quiche.  Always popular the quiches go quickly.  You can also order whole quiches to take home.

dscn4085

I decided to have a tofu and potato wrap.  If you think that was boring; think twice.  Delicious and perfectly seasoned.

 dscn4086

One day, I am not kidding, I am going to have their Creme Brulee French Toast…..as soon as I decide I want to gain weight…I will do that.  It is one of their most photographed offerings.

Eating in…Rehoboth Beach, The Charcoal Grill, Restaurant, Full Bar, Eat In, Carry Out, Catering, Barbecue, New Location, Review, Delaware Beaches

dscn4139

Wendy and Tracy went from having The Charcoal Deli to a full restaurant and bar called The Charcoal Grill.  They are now located at 19287 Miller Rd., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  You will find right on Rt. 1 or Coastal Highway, next to the Food Lion.  Tel. 302-260-9615.

Their motto is also the same:  “We Grill While You Chill.”  You can find their menu at www.rehoboth.com/charcoaldeli.  The old address is still on that menu.  Don’t worry about it.

As we enter our Summer Season at the Delaware Beaches there is nothing better than good barbecue.  I love to barbecue myself using charcoal.  At The Charcoal Grill they slow cook over a charcoal grill.  The taste is the best.

Good barbecue cannot be faked.  You need to cook it with love; nurture it until it is just ready.

We decided to visit The Charcoal Grill on Saturday evening.  They are open 7 days a week. I can see it becoming a local’s hang out.  Both Wendy and Tracy are very friendly and fun.

The restaurant has gone through a complete renovation.  Lively colors let you know you are entering a restaurant that is relaxed and casual.

On one side of the restaurant, plenty of seatings.  On the other side you will find the bar, which is small but very comfortable.  They have used their space well; besides the bar there are high tables for dining, as well.

dscn4132

I was so pleasantly surprised to see how good it looked.  Background music was playing and it was crowded.

There is plenty of parking and as the season gets into high gear, parking is a bit of a test of patience in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  So, I am giving you a head up because The Charcoal Grill is worth it.

Almost everything is made in-house, except hot dogs and a few other things.  They are very well aware of gluten allergies.  Their barbecue sauces and rubs are gluten free.  If you do have a question, please talk to either one of them.

My husband, who has the gluten allergy, decided to have the baby backs with potato salad and cole slaw.  Corn bread would have accompanied them, but that was not gluten free.

 dscn4137

I had the combination of chicken and baby backs, accompanied with cole slaw and their veggies of the day.

dscn4138

I tasted the veggies first.  They were cooked to perfection, and so buttery.  The ribs were amazing.  I am not kidding.  They were crispy with the sauce adding that perfect blend.  The chicken fell off the bones.  It was that good.

These ladies know how to cook.  They also offer salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, dinners to go and deli take out.  The desserts are made from scratch.

They are planning on serving breakfast on week-ends soon; but not yet.

Check them out and tell me if you liked it.

Oh, I almost forgot….they offer catering.

Have a good one!!

Eating in..Rehoboth Beach, The Gallery Espresso, Restaurant, Review, Coffee Shop, Breakfast, Crepes, Paninis, Sandwiches, Free Wi-Fi, Outdoor Seating, A Cofee Shop with A Twist, Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches

IMG_2083

Break fast in Downtown Rehoboth Beach with friends?   Breakfast is when I usually get together; more so than lunch, I would say.  It is in the a.m. when try to catch up with events happening in our lives; then off to do whatever else we, usually, have to do.

In the past few weeks I have visited The Gallery Espresso located at 70 Rehoboth Ave., right in Dowtown Rehoboth Beach.  They are at 1st Street Station, on the corner of 1st St. and Rehoboth Avenue. It is the south side of the ocean block.  Tel. 302-231-2113.  Website?  www.thegalleryespresso.com.  You can find them on Twitter as The Gallery Espresso and on Facebook as Gallery Espresso.  John is the owner and you will usually find him behind the counter, along with some of his staff.

dscn3853

This is a coffee shop with a twist; an art gallery and retail store on one side.  John has local artists exhibiting in his coffee shop.  Their art is for sale.  John is also an artist working on different projects and would be more than happy to show you around.

Comfortable sofas, free Wi-Fi, high top tables, as well as regular tables are available for the patrons.

IMG_2071

On a nice day you can sit outside and enjoy the outdoors.  Pets are welcomed on their patio.

Enjoy one of their bold coffees served in one large cup; my preference.  Add one of their freshly baked cookies.

IMG_2245

dscn3849

John and his staff are friendly and can give you suggestions, depending of what you are in the mood for.

Place your order at the counter; food will be brought to the table.  Check the webiste for their menus.

 dscn3852

The other day I wanted to try a crepe.  I chose the broccoli and chicken.  Two large crepes arrived.  No way you will complain, here, not having enough food.  It was almost plenty for two people.

 dscn3851

The next time when I visited I asked if I could only have one crepe.  That time I chose the ham and cheese with a light cheese sauce on top.  That was the perfect size for me.

dscn3966

The Gallery Espresso makes everything fresh.  They even have some vegan and gluten free items.  Please call the above mentioned number if you are interested in any, and see if on that particular day, it will be available.

Other friends have had the scrambled egg platter.

dscn3850

And, another that calls herself an expert on eggwhite scrambles also enjoyed a nice breakfast.

dscn3965

The Gallery Espresso opens every day.  Besides breakfast they offer plenty more.  It is casual and relaxing; stay as long as you want.

Have a great day!!

Lunch at Blue Sea Cafe, American & Mediterranean Cuisine, Lewes, Delaware, Restaurant, Review

dscn1203

Running out the door today to get that present that you might have missed or just to even up the stack, or really just to take a walk through Lewes.  Then…..

If you get a little hungry then do like Jody and I did on Thursday when we decided to stop at Blue Sea Cafe.  It is located at 108 Second St.  Tel. 302-703-2161.  Website?  http://www.blueseacafe.com.   It is a sister restaurant to Jerry’s Seafood, which is right next door.  The restaurant opens for breakfast and lunch daily and Fridays and Saturdays for dinner.

dscn1199

Blue Sea Cafe is a little bigger than what I expected.  The addition of the bar is fairly new.  It has a casual atmosphere; very colorful.

dscn1198

We sat at a corner table, with views to Second St.  People were busy, carrying packages, and chatting with one another.

We decided on iced teas, while checking the menu.  I wanted something Mediterranean since the restaurant has an American and Mediterranean cuisine.

Jody’s choice was a Smoked Turkey Panini with Gouda cheese, tomato and pesto.  It came with chips.  A nice size panini.  I think I remember her saying “this is so good”.

dscn1202

I had not had a Gyro in such a long time.  It is, Greece’s version of a fast food.  The menu said it was an Authentic Gyro, with seasoned beef and lamb, sliced paper thin and served with that traditional tzatziki sauce.  It also was received very well.  It was a generous portion; more than enough, but as usual, it was gone in not time.

dscn1201

Served on a pita bread with extra tzatziki sauce.  Tzatziki sauce is traditionally made of strained yogurt, mixed with cucumbers, garlic, salt, olive oil, pepper and at times lemon juice and parsley.  It is always served cold.

If you try Blue Sea Cafe for dinner let me know……the menu is on their website.

Note:  Blue Sea Cafe offers delivery.

Time flew by.  You know what?  I feel so lucky…my friends are priceless!!  Love getting together with them.

Again, Merry Christmas to you…..
