Destination? Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, Georgetown, Milford, Delaware, Thanksgiving at The Beach!! Relax, Give Thanks, Enjoy your Stay, Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches

dscn2098dscn9839

Before I was married, became a mother and decided to be a stay-at-home mom, I lived in Baltimore, Maryland.  I worked in Baltimore and then on Wednesday of Thanksgiving I would drive to Orlean, Virginia, to my boyfriend’s family farm house.  He then became my husband, John.  My mother in law, Louise, is a great cook and she would go all out Wednesday and Thanksgiving Day.  Feeling totally satisfied and comatosed I dreaded the late in the day drive to Baltimore.  Work was waiting on Friday.  They really should give Friday off to everyone.  A long week-end of Thanksgiving.  Most of us have a lot to be thankful for.

I love an overcast day on Thanksgiving.  I like it cold, as well.  So, even though I enjoy the swaying palm trees of warmer climates, on Thanksgiving and Christmas, my preference is the chill in the air that the Atlantic Coast usually offers.

The Delaware Beaches are open for business.  The following are restaurants in Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, Georgetown, and Milford that will have Thanksgiving fare.  This list is probably not complete.  I will update it as I find other restaurants, but in the meantime, it might help if you are coming to the beaches to start a new Thansgiving tradition.

Best Table on the Beach...Venus in Dewey

Best Table on the Beach...Venus in Dewey

Winter is the perfect opportunity to learn to cook.  Cooking is not hard…don’t rush it…savour it.  One of the most fun days I had over a year ago was when a few of us went to one of the cooking classes offered by Big Fish Grill.  We had so much fun.  I even ventured to fillet the fish…why was it so hard when it looked so easy?

So, What’s Cooking?  Read on…

Abracadinner Cooking Classes – By Personal Chef Kris Etze.  Class sizes range from 4 to 8, depending on the topic and “hands on” projects.  Each class will last approx. 90 minutes to 2 hours.  Cost?  $55 per individual class.  Enroll in 4 and get the 5th class free.  Additional fees may apply toward food and supplies.  Class size is limited.

Tasting will be included; a light lunch in Kris’ kitchen.

Pre-register by calling 302-945-2610, faxing your info to 302-945-4153 or you may e-mail Kris at chef@abracadinner.com.  Leave your name, email address, phone number, topic and date of class.  All fees are due in advance.  Mail your check to Kris Etze, 22393 Holly Oak Lane, Lewes, DE 19958.  Driving directions, registration info, and anything you might need to bring will be sent by e-mail.

Kris has different classes with the first one starting on Saturday, 1/14.  This class will be Chowdah Central…Winter is the best time to prepare a chowder.  To me, it calms the winter blues and warms my soul.

Next class will be on 1/28 – Thai It Up!  The flavors of Thailand.

Kris is offering cooking classes all the way into March.  For a complete schedule and more information, please visit http://www.abracadinner.com.   Abracadinner is also on Facebook.

Nage Rehoboth – I have not been to Nage in such a long time.   They have been a recipient of my figs in years past.  Come to think of it, a post is needed on this popular Rehoboth restaurant.  Nage is located at 19730 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth Beach, DE.  Tel. 302-226-2037.  Website? www.nage.bz/cooking_Classes_in_Rehoboth.htm.

Nage will be offering 5 Cooking Classes.  The first one will be on Saturday, 1/21.  The topic will be Healthy and Flavorful Cooking Class.  The next one will be on 2/18 with Hearty Winter Soups and Stews Class.

Better yet, just visit the website because each class is clearly explained.

In each class you will be exploring food and drink with the chefs of Nage Rehoboth.  There will be an informal demonstration with lots of interaction with the instructor.  A tasting, a booklet of the recipes from the class and even a meal shared with the instructor.

You will need to register and pay for the classes in advance.  All reservations will be handled online.  You may also pay online, as well.

Big Fish Grill – This is the only cooking class I have attended.  The one that was so much fun.  Their classes begin with a tour of the restaurant.  Cooking classes feature menu items from the Big Fish Grill and Summer House.

Delaware Beaches, Two Restaurants Taking Food Allergies and Intolerances very seriously, Big Fish Grill, Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Blues, Lewes and Bethany Beach

Are you thinking….there she comes again!!  Oh, well.  You know what happens?  When it hits you or your family, then you spring into action, just like anything else.

I got an e-mail from Sharon who every year visits the Delaware Beaches.  The difference this year is that she has been diagnosed with celiac disease.  No gluten (wheat flour or its derivatives); so….how about Grotto Pizza, a favorite of hers?  She read my post on Grotto’s new addition to their menu.  You got it, Gluten Free Pizza!!

img_6344

I don’t know Sharon but I know that brought a smile to her face.  She wanted to know more.  I sent her a not so short e-mail with additional information on our restaurants that are sensitive to the customers with food allergies and intolerances.

I know how hard it is to go to a restaurant and at the mention of the word “gluten free”, the glaze clouds the eyes of a waiter.  It just happened to me this week.  It is not her or his fault.  On this day and age, as celiac disease is at the forefront of food allergies, restaurants need to inform their staff about this and other food allergies and intolerances because there is a difference, and it is important.

“A true food allergy causes an immune system reaction that affects numerous organs in the body.”  It can be severe or life-threatening.  An intolerance or sensitivity is less serious.  It is limited to digestive problems.

It is evident that eating out is getting easier when you have a food allergy.  I have seen the improvement.

The response of some restaurants varies.  Not on purpose.  There is a lot of ignorance and there is also the chef that has a concept of his dish in a specific way.  To change it would completely ruin his masterpiece.

Two restaurants that are rising above the rest, here at the Delaware Beaches, are Big Fish Grill and Bethany Blues.  These two restaurants, by far, are the best I have encountered, anywhere, regarding their handling of customers with food allergies.  Kudos to them!!

Big Fish Grill

I am a habitual customer of this popular restaurant in Rehoboth Beach.  There is always a line but I have a tip for you.  If you go through the entrance of the Tiki Bar, you can grab a high top or sit at the bar without the assistant of a hostess.  The service is just as good there.  I, actually, prefer it.

I questioned if the crabcakes had any fillers.  She said “just a little bit for binding”. Oh, it is just that my husband has a gluten allergy.  I left it like that.  I turned around and the Manager was there wondering who had the gluten allergy.  Only the Manager at Big Fish will come and talk to you about an allergy.

After the food is prepared, she will inspect the dish; then the food will be brought to the table by him or her.

Big Fish is located at 20298 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227-FISH.  Website? www.bigfishgrill.com.

When visiting the website you can click on Menu.  On the right hand side you will see all the menus available for each allergy. Dairy Free, Egg Free, Garlic Free, Gluten Free, Nut Free, Shellfish Free.

On that evening, just sitting at the bar, my husband enjoyed, worryfree, a Thai Wrap and some gorgeous shrimp.

img_6221

img_6222

img_6218

I usually order their House Salad, which has wild greens with tomato, gorgonzola, walnuts and maple walnut vinaigrette.  Then, I have them top it with their caramelized Atlantic Salmon.  It is delicious.  I can’t get enough of it.

 img_6220

Bethany Blues

This restaurant and music venue takes its customers with food related allergies very seriously, as well.

IMG_1265

Bethany Blues is located at 18385 Coastal Highway, Lewes, and in Bethany Beach you can find them at 6 North Pennsylvania Avenue.  In their website, www.bethanyblues.com you can click under Menu, then click under Allergy Concerns.  You will get plenty of info. there.

Again, at Bethany Blues, the Manager will come and talk to you about your food related allergy.

IMG_1260

Bethany Blues, I am coming back; just waiting for the Second Season at the Beaches, which is fast approaching.

Even though there plenty of other restaurants that can accommodate you at the Delaware Beaches, these 2 really do stand out.

Let me know what you think…talk to you later…

Rehoboth Beach, Restaurants, Downtown, Specials, Off Season Specials, Delaware Beaches, What’s Going On?

100_0839

Rehoboth Beach is one of those coastal towns located in Delaware that is known for its good restaurants.  Even though I have lived here for many years, there are still some that I have not visited.

A year ago I started my blog and during this past year I have reviewed some of the downtown restaurants.  Once I have reviewed a restaurant or business I send them an e-mail.  My reviews are, of course, my personal opinion.  I think the restaurants appreciate comments; how the customer has been treated from the moment he or she steps into their establishment.

With that said, I am now getting e-mails with the fall offerings and specials.  The following list, is by no means complete.  I am getting there and I will keep passing on the information as I get it or find it.

They will close for the season on Sunday, October 31st.

Big Fish Grill, Restaurant, Review, Cooking Classes, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, Gluten Free Menu

100_0194

Back in January of this year I wrote a post on Big Fish Grill.  If you would like to see it, just go to the left hand side of this blog and under Archives click on the month of January and scroll down to the 23rd.

I have also mentioned Big Fish on other blogs, as well.  It is one of those restaurants that…for example, tonight someone in my household wanted scallops, well scallops were not on my menu tonight.  My menu was more like leftovers; yes let’s clean up the refrigerator, shall we?

Well, about 1/2 hour later I was at Big Fish.  The restaurant is located at 20298 Coastal Highway.  Tel. 302-227-9007.  Website is www.bigfishgrill.com.

Big Fish is crowded all the time.  Popular, consistenly good food; simple and fresh.

This restaurant prides itself on being able to handle any food related allergy.  They have the following menus:  Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Egg Free, Garlic Free, Nut Free, Shellfish Free.  The Manager will come to your table and address your allergy.  It is taken very seriously.

Tammi was our waitress and she also eats gluten free.  We were definitely in good hands but the manager did come to talk to us.

Blackened scallops over roasted corn and tomatoes was actually a large appetizer that was ordered as a meal and turned out very good.

100_4882

I really like the glazed salmon and I got it over a Greek Salad, which had romaine, feta, kalamata olives, onions, tomatoes, cukes and pepperoncinis.

100_4885

It really was a quick dinner tonight so nothing else was ordered.

One thing that I want you to take notice is that  Big Fish Grill will start their 2010-2011 Cooking Classes.

When I wrote the post last January, its content, is pretty much the cooking class taken with friends at Big Fish.  It was a great one.  I learned how to fillet a red snapper and to tell you the truth it was harder than it looked.

100_0183

You can go on the website and get all the information about these classes but they do fill up quickly.

The cost is $75.00 per class and you must register in advance.  The classes are from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m..  Menu items will change for each class, special requests are accepted and group/theme/private classes are also available.

The dates are:  October 9th, October 23rd, November 6, November 20th, December 4th, December 18th, January 8th, January 22nd, February 5th, February 19th, March 5th, March 19th, April 2nd, April 16th and April 30th.

You may sign up for the classes at the Big Fish Grill or call 302-227-FISH.

Talk to you later….beautiful weather….
