“The shallow bays; Rehoboth Bay, Indian River Bay, and Little Assawoman Bay lie just behind a narrow spit of land in sight and sound of the Atlantic Ocean. If you live or vacation in South Coastal Delaware…the inland bays are the bays in your backyard.”
Last Monday while I was out and about in the Bethany Beach and Clarksville areas I stopped at Good Earth Market & Organic Farm. I had heard about the Farm to Table Dinners that are about to start next week. There are 3 of them scheduled for this summer and I posted everything on this website. You can check them by scrolling down to the 4th of May.
The first Farm to Table dinner is next Tuesday, 5/10 and it starts at 6:00 p.m. The beneficiary of this fundraising event is the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays.
The headquarters are located at 39375 Inlet Rd., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. Tel. 302-226-8105.
But, in Bethany Beach you will find another location. The Bethany Beach Nature Center and Conservation Area. The location is at 807 Garfield Parkway (Rt. 26), about 1 mile west of Rt. 1. The telephone is 302-537-7680. The website? http://inlandbays.org.
The Delaware Center for the Inland Bays calls home in Bethany a house that was moved to this location from the Town of Bethany Beach. This is the 3rd of 5 houses built by John Addy, who also built the Addy Sea. It is circa 1902 – 1903.
The Addy Sea Bed & Breakfast is the 4th of 5 houses built by John Addy. It is oceanfront, in town.
Inside you will find exhibits and information. Please visit the website because they have so many instructional and fun activities on the schedule, including the above mentioned Farm to Table Dinner.
The Mission? To protect and preserve Delaware’s Inland Bays.
I stopped at sunset; quiet. There was a children’s playground. Beautiful.
Outside, you can explore the forest and marshes. There are 26 acres; 3 acres of forested upland, 9 acres of fresh water wetlands and 14 acres of tidal wetlands.
There is a Native Plant Garden; indigenous plants. Everything well marked. A bench for possible reading and relaxation.
Further down there were tables overlooking the marsh and water. The whole setting was surreal. I don’t know if it was because of the time of the day or just because nature does that to your soul. It felt so good.
A trail over a raised boardwalk continued the expedition. The trail is open from dawn until dusk.
If you are in Bethany Beach this summer pay them a visit. You will be very impressed.
Again, check the website for upcoming activities. The kids would love it.
See you, have a great week-end….talk to you later….

The season in Delray is probably winding down, just like the one at the Delaware Beaches is about to kick in. But, I can tell you that I have visited Delray year-round and there is something going on all the time. Delray Beach does not roll its streets until next year. Months ago I was going to attend a gluten free cooking class at Good Earth Market. I believe that one of those “nor’ easters” hit the beaches and that particular class was canceled. Needless to say, I had never been there but I knew where it was located.
Let me just give the info. of where you can find them and then we will get to the best part of the post. It is located at 31806 Good Earth Lane, Rt., 26 on Atlantic Ave., which is 4 1/2 miles west of Bethany Beach. The town is Clarksville, Delaware 19970. The tel. 302-537-7100. The website? www.goodearthmarket.com. On Facebook, of course. Befriend them on FB because they have more to offer besides what you will find on the website.
The owners are Susan and David Ryan. This is their store. The farm? Well, it is also their home. They open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. On Sundays they are open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
When I arrived on Monday, Susan was there. She was very gracious and looked very rested even though she had just come from France. I introduced myself and she told me to feel free to take pictures and then she would take me out to the farm which was in back of the store.
The store is very well stocked and looks like a grocery store with shelves and freezers. There is a fresh dairy case and a non-dairy case.
Good Earth has organic products from teas, coffees to all natural beauty products; hand creams and body oils. Vitamins and healthy essentials, as well.
There is a huge selection of gluten free grocery and frozen foods. I was particularly interested on the gluten free products since we eat gluten free in my home.
Every Friday and Saturday there is a delivery of Kogler’s Old World Artisan Breads.
You will find cut flowers in season and herbs are cut to order.
The farm is 100% organic and to be so it was certified by the USDA. Many of the items are grown right on the farm.
Susan took me to the back of the farm. There we found Ingrid, the Master Gardener busy at work. In the greenhouse, there were 7,000 heirloom tomatoes to be planted. Good Earth Market is known for their heirloom tomatoes. They are sold at the Farmers Markets in Lewes, Georgetown, Bethany and Fenwick Island. Besides the tomato plants there were also all kinds of fragrant herbs getting ready, as well.
Besides my wanting to see the farm and store I also was very much interested in some of the upcoming events that will be starting this week-end. These look like they will be a lot of fun.
Saturday, 5/7 – at 12:00 Noon. Michael Rodriguez, consulting chef at Kool Bean returns for another fun cooking demo. He will work his magic and taste the results. Recipes for you on that day.
Saturday, 5/14 – at 12:00 Noon. Matt Haley will be there for another fun Cooking Show!! He will be entertaining, for sure and will show how to prepare something delicious. Arrive early to get a good seat.
Saturday, 5/21 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. is Good Earth Market’s Semi Annual Arts & Crafts Show. It will feature local artists. Food and drinks will be available along with Kogler’s Bread. It will be the day to find unique treasures for yourselves or for gifts.
Saturday, 6/4 at 12:00 Noon. “Slow Food Delmarva” arrives at Good Earth Market. The Market is excited to support this idea, way of living and way of eating. It is a global grassroots movement with members around the world campaigning for a commitment to a better community, a better environment and better food. Come to learn more. You can check their website, www.slowfooddelmarva.org.

Once again I found myself walking with Jody in this Historic Town. Lewes, is truly a gem. Loved by its residents, fiercely protected. And, enjoyed by its visitors.
The town looked good. Everything spruced up; ready for the upcoming season. This town speaks for itself. Once you visit, you will definitely want to come again. It was so clean and manicured. Who does this work? And, when? They should be praised.
Our destination was going to be a shop whose proprietors have been friends for a very long time. Mary Lou Jackson and Carol DiSabatino. They have to be. They have been in business since 1994. The name of the shop is Two Friends, Ltd. It is located at 205 Second Street, Lewes, DE 19958. Tel. 302-644-0477. Website? http://www.twofriendslewes.com. On Facebook? You bet, just like everyone else.
It has been quite some time since I had visited Two Friends; off Second St. and next to Half Full and Kings Ice Cream. Now you realize where it is.
There is nothing better than to see a smile on someone’s face. Mary Lou greeted us with that friendly disposition and a smile on her face. After chatting up a bit Jody and I started to take the store in. So many cute things for the home, gifts for every occasion; a wedding, a hostess gift, Mother’s Day or just your own little indulgence.
Some of the more recognizable brands were Mariposa, Caspari, The Thymes, Ltd., Taylor and Company Driftwood Designs, which had custom signs and hand painted decor. Among others, there were Blanko Glass which is made in the U.S.!!, Key West Aloe, Lifeguard Press, Lewes Cats Meow which are wooden keepsakes, and Lily Designs with an exclusive Lewes Necklace and one of a kind bracelets.
If you are a fan of Vera Bradley you will find the newest designs, summer flip flops and coordinating beach towels.
Some stores you have to experience for youself and Two Friends is a must if you are visiting Lewes.
Enjoy the pictures. Better yet, visit this “Best Little Shop at the Beach for You, Your Home and Your Friends”.
Have a good one!!….Talk to you later….

Chilly and rainy, don’t you think? I had seen this recipe in a Cooking Light Magazine but I changed it all around. Different chiles and chicken broth used instead of water. It is also “wet” instead of the traditional dryer version.
A Paella is a Spanish dish from the city of Valencia. It is served as a main course. There are 3 types: The Valencia Paella, the seafood paella and the mixed paella. But, there are many other variations, as well. The key ingredient? Olive oil and saffron.
I hope you like this one; perfect for tonight’s weather.
“Wet” Paella with Green Chiles, Corn and Clams
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 cups yellow onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 can of whole green chiles, chopped (usually 2 or 3 per can)
1/2 tsp. salt (optional)
1/2 teaspoon, black pepper, divided
3/4 cup short-grain brown rice.
1/2 teaspoon, saffron threads, crushed
2 1/2 cups low sodium broth (If you want the regular, well you know what to do.)
1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper
1 1/2 cups corn (fresh, frozen or canned)
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
2 lbs. littleneck clams
A sprinkle of parsley for garnish.
Lemons wedges on the side
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
Heat oil in an ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion, garlic, green chiles, 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional), and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Saute for around 3 minutes.
Add rice and saffron. Cook for about 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Then, add two cups of the chicken broth, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, and red pepper. Bring to a boil. Cover.
Bake at 450 degrees for 50 minutes or until rice is done.
Stir in the corn and tomatoes and 1/2 cup of chicken broth. Then, nestle the clams into the rice mixture.
Keep baking at that same 450 degrees for another 12 minutes or until the shells open. Then, take the ovenproof skillet out of the oven and discard any unopened clams.
Place skillet on top of the stove. Cook without stirring on medium-high heat for about 10 minutes or so, covered.
You can top it with parsley and serve it with a wedge of lemon.
It will serve 4.
Please note that this dish is gluten free.
As usual, the best way is to make it your own, just like I did. This dish hit the spot tonight.

“Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul.”
With that in mind, there was no better place to to listen to music, on Saturday, than at the Rusty Rudder in Dewey Beach.
The Greaseband was the first to perform, early in the afternoon but the Rudder’s deck was packed. It was a chilly afternoon; some of us felt it, and some others were feeling no pain.
It really was so pretty and the Rusty Rudder sits right on the bay; scenic is the word.
The moment The Greaseband started playing people were dancing. Their music reminisce so many good years of clean, fun music. The people in attendance were a mix. Some young; babies in tow and some, well, a little more mature. I would like to think I was in the middle of the pack with Shelley, Paula, Mike and a few others we met.
I looked at everyone on the deck and every single person was smiling and dancing. Letting their hair down. Some let their hair down so much, they were dancing on tables.
The Greaseband has been together for 38 years. Amazing that they have been able to keep it together for such a long time. Big following. This was the first performance of many in Dewey Beach. Check their website www.greaseband.com.
Then, champagne was served to every one for a toast on Admiral Dewey Day. A proclamation and a celebration. In 1981 Rusty Rudder showed up at the Delaware beaches. A restaurant, a bar and a music venue. This season promises to be a fun one in Dewey as the Rusty Rudder celebrates all summer long its 30 years.
Have a great day!! Talk to you later….
