Atlantic Avenue, Delray Beach, After-Party, Florida, South Florida, Entertainment, Palm Beach County

100_4543

One of the highlights of visiting Delray Beach, besides sitting on its gorgeous beach is to experience Atlantic Avenue.  Restaurants, shops, outdoor dining is what they are offering.  And, entertainment.  It seems that there is so much music in the air.

I was just there for a few days and got to enjoy some good music.

One of the venues for entertainment is Jonnie Brown’s located on 301 E. Atlantic Ave., tel. 561-243-9911.  Burgers, Ribs, and classic Rock n’ Roll.

We had pretty good hamburgers.  Nice size with an order of fries.

On Thursdays, you will find the Elvis impersonator.  He has been at this location for many years.  Has a huge following.  One of those is a lady we met.  She was 72 years old.  Always there and always dancing.  That’s what is keeping her so young. She was unbelievable.

100_4541

I was there on Friday, as well, and there she was, dancing and enjoying Ryan & The Rockers.  Her husband, a spoon player was introduced and did a number for the audience.

100_4680

She is the one in the blue shirt.

100_4674

Ryan & The Rockers were so much fun and completely different from the performance on Thursday.

Then, Saturday comes along and brings Rosarito, an igualita from Puerto Rico, and her husband, Kiki, to Delray.  They had never been and off we went to listen to The Flyers. They could not believe the atmosphere in Delray and is still off season.

The Flyers usually play at Johnnie Brown’s on Wednesdays but had an extra performance that week.  If you get an opportunity, do go and listen to them, because they are very talented and versatile.

Another venue for dinner, music and dancing is Il Bacio.  I did not experience the food, so I can’t tell you how it is.  The patio is where the music is happening.  The location is 29 S.E. 2nd Ave., Tel. 561-865-7785.  website is www.ilbacioofdelray.com.  There is a cover and it is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

100_4546

The first night Shelley and I went, we thought we would not be able to get in.  But, why?  Well, let’s say we were at least 20 years older than every person there.  Not only were we older, but it seemed we were shorter.  Yes, I guess our platforms/heels were not high enough.  We were also not that endowed, if you get my drift.

We got a few looks that said, what are they doing here?  Or, aren’t they my mother’s age?  We got a kick out of the whole experience.  So, we decided to take Rosarito and Kiki and again the 4 of us were the oldest people there.  We did not care; it was fun to check the scene.

Loud music, and crowded.  Dancing at a frenzy.  Kiki mentioned that it was like Ibiza, Spain.

For such a small Village by the Sea, the entertainment is pretty good.  And, we only went to a couple of places.

Puerto Rico Coffee Expo, Puerto Rican Coffee Industry, San Juan, Puerto Rico, September 18 – 19, 2010

PR_Coffee_Expo1

Back in May when I visited Puerto Rico I met Paul Gonzalez when he was promoting the Puerto Rico Coffee Expo.  I told him that I was a coffee afcionada and that I would be more than pleased to put the information for this great event on my blog.

Puerto Rico is known for its coffee.  I remember my grandmother always having her afternoon coffee.  It is a ritual.  A relaxing time to share with friends and neighbors.

100_2017

“Puerto Rico es Cafe”  is the motto for the Puerto Rico Coffee Expo which will be held Saturday 9/18 and Sunday 9/19 at the Puerto Rico Convention Center located at 100 Convention Blvd., San Juan, Puerto Rico 00907.

The Puerto Rico Coffee Expo will bring together the coffee community and related products in an effort to stimulate and reposition the Puerto Rican coffee industry.

The Expo will gather coffee brands, producers, roasters, distributors, restaurant owners, coffee shops, barista, coffee lovers, artisans, private organizations and government agencies that promote the coffee industry development.

The public will have the opportunity to learn more about the history, brands, new trends, barista art, and special coffees.

The exhibitors at the Puerto Rican Coffee Expo will have the opportunity to showcase their products and services to thousands of local and international visitors, while stimulating and promoting the production and quality of the Puerto Rican coffee.

This event will be opened to the general public and is free of charge.

The coordinators of the event is the Cube Group, Inc.  It is a Puerto Rican organization founded in 2010 with the main objective of developing high impact cultural, socio-economic and entrepreneurial events in Puerto Rico.  It is composed of three young guys who want to establish an annual event that will contribute to the culture, economy, and education within the fascinating world of coffee.

If you would like more information, please visit www.prcoffeeexpo.com, or write to the e-mail info@coffeeexpo.com.  You may also call 787-568-7646.

Talk to you later…..I cannot imagine the aroma at the Puerto Rico Convention Center during the event…Have a great one…

Belly Full of Stones, Play, Brown Box Theatre Project, Theatre Production, Globe Theater, Berlin, Maryland

100_4718

“I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”   Oscar Wilde

When theatre is well done, the audience is transported to a different time and place.

I think that’s what happened to me last night when I went to the Globe Theater in Berlin, Maryland to see the production of a new play called Belly Full of Stones by Kimberly Barrante, featuring Kathleen Crosby and our own Kyler Taustin from Ocean City, Maryland.  The Director was Kimberly herself.

You know I have mentioned in the past how the town of Berlin brings so many memories.  For many years while my children attended school in Berlin I would stop by The Globe.  It was a little different then but this historic theatre has meant a lot to all of us that had to travel to this town every day.  Coffee, lunch or just lounging in one of the comfortable sofas.  That we did a lot.

100_4709

The Globe is located at 12 Broad St., Berlin, Maryland.  It nurtures the town of Berlin with food, arts and spirits.  It is open year round from Tuesdays through Sunday for lunch and dinner.  Tel. 410-641-0784.  Website is www.globetheater.com.

It was built in 1910 to be a  garage for “horseless carriages”; its uses changed over the years.  But, it has always remained a cultural center for the area. At present The Globe’s stage brings to Berlin local, regional and national live music.

The Globe offers a wide range of foods from appetizers, soups and salads, sandwiches, to Sunday Brunch and dinner.

100_4716

There are many selections for people with food allergies and sensitivities, so they will be able to do their best to accommodate you.

Tonight’s performance of Belly Full of Stones was sold out.  There was even a waiting list.  The play was brought to us by the Brown Box Theatre Project.

100_4720

Brown Box encourages multi-talented artists to use all of their skills.  Their motto is “no idea is too big, no theater too small”.  Kyler Taustin and Kimberly Barrante created Brown Box Theatre Project after moving to New York.  They wanted to continue to have the freedom to choose their role from project to project.

Dining Divas waiting to see the Play

Dining Divas waiting to see the Play

Please check www.brownboxtheatre.org for upcoming shows, information on how to submit projects for production or just to really check what this young company is all about.

Being that Brown Box Theatre Project is a young non-profit company, well, money is needed in order to bring theatre productions to fruition.

Donations are very much appreciated.  Checks can be made out to KT Brown Box Theatre Project, but if you prefer to donate with a credit card, or for a tax deductable donation, please visit www.brownboxtheatre.org and click on donations to access their Fractured Atlas Account.  Fractured Atlas is a non-profit arts service organization.

All donations will be greatly appreciated and will be used in the production of new and innovative theatre in the New York area.

Belly Full of Stones is the story of M and W, a husband and wife.  She, W, in love with a fictional man in her book.  M, with his own problems, as well.  The search for the ideal relationship; it’s complicated to say the least. We all want to be the most important thing in someone else’s life.

The play was 40 minutes long.  Simple set.  The dialog was clear and many times funny.

100_4714

Kathleen Crosby was the perfect W.  The look, the dress, the hair and her sensitivity;  all perfect.  Someone might have even described her cold; I didn’t think so.

It was great to see Kyler Taustin in this role.  I had never seen him act but had heard a lot about his passion for the theatre.  And, as the saying goes “if you follow your passion you will never work a day in your life.”  He was very good, definitely into character.

It was also very nice to have the discussion after the play.  In it we got to meet all of them and question Kimberly about how someone that young could grasp the essence of relationships.

The audience was very engaged and that was a sign of success.  Great questions and interaction between all of us there.

Needless to say, it was a very nice evening.

I wish them the best for their new projects….talk to you later….

Monty’s South Beach, Miami Beach Marina, Miami Beach, Florida, Restaurant, Review, South Florida

100_4594

On the day we were boating we also had to get something to eat, therefore a stop at Monty’s South Beach was the thing to do.  It is located at 300 Alton Rd., Miami Beach, FL 33139.  Tel. 305-673-3444.  They are working on their website at the moment.  No reservations.

100_4591

Perfect location at the Miami Beach Marina where Monty’s has a captive audience.

100_4590

Raw Bar, Full Bar, Happy Hour, Music; at lunch on Friday it was, actually pretty quiet.  A few people were taking a scuba diving class.  It was funny to see them just sitting there on the bottom of the pool.  I could not help it so I took their picture.

100_4593

100_4607

The restaurant had a gorgeous view and plenty of outdoor dining.

We were hungry so we ordered a shrimp appetizer.  Cooked Cajun style; they were spicy and a little messy.  There was a lot of sauce which I used later to put on my salad which was topped with blackened red snapper.

100_4602

100_4605

A grilled chicken salad was also ordered and both salads were  of a substantial size.

100_4606

Scott ordered the grilled red snapper fish tacos.

100_4604

We enjoyed our lunch and off we went to Stiltsville.  But, on the way out the surprise was the Manatee.  He was beautiful showing his scars.

Stiltsville, Biscayne Bay, Florida, Key Biscayne, Miami, South Florida, An Afternoon on the Water

100_4696

Arriving in South Florida on Thursday and staying only until Sunday.  It seems that when you only have a few days to visit then you try to pack it all in.  Shelley and I did just that.  Shelley is one of my friends that is also a partner in crime when writing posts for my blog.

We stayed in Delray; you know that Village by the Sea that I talk so much about.  I will be talking more about it because as the winter sets in; well, what can I say but that my visits will be more frequent. A fun little beach town!

Scott is a friend and has a boat in Miami and being that it was beautiful and a little hotter than hot, we decided to take advantage of such a nice day.  Let me tell you that I have been on other boating outings with Scott and have complete trust in his ability to handle any situation on the water.

100_4571

We took off and on Biscayne Bay we were.  A tour on the water no less!!  Scott was pointing out different spots.  We did have a target in mind and that was Stiltsville, but to get there we enjoyed the water scenery.

Leaving Miami on one side, the clusters of buildings looked amazing; that vibrant city that defines South Florida.

100_4574

Scott pointed out Fisher Island as the Fisher Island Ferry was going by.  This island was named for automotive parts pioneer/developer Carl G. Fisher and is 3 miles off shore of Miami; only accessible by private boat or ferry.  In 2000 and according to the U.S. Census Bureau, it had the highest per capita income of any place in the United States.

100_4617

Leaving Fisher Island behind we went around Key Biscayne and there we spotted the Cape Florida Lighthouse.  It is located at the south end of Key Biscayne.  Built in 1825, it still marks the Florida Channel, the deepest natural channel into Biscayne Bay.

100_4620

And at the distance I saw Stiltsville.  We are used to building houses on stilts in the Delmarva Peninsula, but this was unreal; right in the middle of the Bay.  I sort of remembered seeing pictures of these unique houses.  Shelley thought there is a book available with their history.

100_4623

Stiltsville is located on Biscayne Bay, about one mile south of Cape Florida which is at the tip of Key Biscayne.  They are built on pilings and the mud flats under them are covered with grass.  Some portions of the structures are built in foot deep water and the other portions built in between 6 – 20 feet deep; giving you access to dock your boat right under it.

100_4633

100_4634

In 1998 the Florida National Register Review Board voted to recommend Stiltsville to the National Register of Historic Places.  Seven months later this recommendation was denied because the 7 house are under 50 years old.

100_4639

The National Park Service is the owner of the land lease since 1980 and will not renew the bay bottom leases.

100_4636

Stiltsville has captured the imagination and has really become part of the folklore of South Florida.  A movement, “Save Old Stiltsville” is on-going.

100_4637

Before hurricane Andrew in 1993 there were over 20 structures and now only 7 remain.  The structures cannot be repaired, by law, so they are standing until they simply fall down.  Some of them are in great shape and their owners use them all the time.

100_4638

Stiltsville came upon during the days of prohibition and gambling.  Gambling was allowed a mile offshore.  Stiltsville is located just over a mile offshore.  Eventually, the law changed to 3 miles offshore.

Then during the 1980’s during the Miami Vice days, this area was used for seaplane dropoffs of contraband.

100_4640

They are beautiful and I could only imagined what it would be like to wake up in the morning surrounded by water on all sides.  A storm was at a distance but we did not have trouble.

100_4630

We kept on going to get some gas at Scottie’s and something to quench our thirst.

100_4658

100_4660

I loved looking at some of the boats anchored at Scottie’s Marina; the lobster boat.  A few 4 legged friends were there, as well.

100_4651

100_4653

It was now early evening; just waiting for the traffic to die down in order to go back to Delray Beach.  The night was young and music was on our minds.

100_4654

What a great afternoon!  The highlight was, definitely, Stiltsville, but the company was not far behind….talk to you later…

Pineapple Princess, Everything Beach, Bathing Suits, Wraps, Hats, Visors, Flip Flops, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches

The building where Cultured Pearl is located is like a “mall”.  There are stores on the first floor.  I wanted to visit Pineapple Princess because Paula told me that they had really cute stuff.

100_4505

It is definitely a beach store.  There are so many bathing suits.  The good thing is that you can mix and match them all.

100_4513

There are hats, flip flops, jewelry, Tommy Bahamas T-Shirts; and a lot is on sale, except the new 2011 arrivals.  Yes, they are already here!!

100_4507

Pineapple Princess is located at 301 Rehoboth Ave., Suite B, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. 302-227-8705.

100_4512

The owner of the store is Donna Hitch and her Manager is her daughter Devon Pennell.

100_4506

Donna has been in the bathing suit business for a long time, having worked for many years at Body Double in Fenwick Island, Delaware.  She opened Pineapple Princess about 3 years ago.

100_4515

One of the features that make this store so unique is that Donna can alter anything right on the premises.

I did not meet Devon but Donna was so nice and I watched her interact with plenty of customers.  Her suggestions regarding bathing suits and what would look good were excellent.  It is hard to buy a bathing suit and having someone making you so comfortable is half the battle.

I am glad I went.  Thanks Paula for the tip.

Talk to you later….you know I will…..

The Milton Theatre, Sheriff’s Sale, Art Deco Movie House, Milton, Delaware, Help Save the Milton Theatre

100_0633

Just this year I went for the first time to The Milton Theatre. I was taken by its beauty.  Even though this theater is the venue for many events in the area including movies and plays, it desperately needs the help of the community.

100_0663

I wrote a post on 3/28 so if you would like to see it just click on the month of March under Archives and scroll down to the date.

The Milton Theatre is located on 110 Uniion Street in Milton, DE 19968.  Tel. 302-684-3400.  The website is www.miltontheatre.org.

100_0655

The following e-mail arrived and I would like to pass it on to you, the community.

100_0652

If The Milton Theatre closes, downtown Milton will change, businesses will be hurt, and even the real estate values will suffer.

100_0650

So the facts are:

The Milton Theatre is scheduled for sherrif’s sale on September 21st.

We intent to save The Milton Theatre and ensure its positive financial future.

100_0661

We need to raise a significant amount of money in a very short amount of time in order to save the theatre building.  A war chest will enable us to negotiate with the lender over terms of a “buy-back” of the theatre building alone.

100_0657

We need to provide the lender with hard evidence that the Milton community and beyond are giving us the support we need to save this important cultural asset.

A local philanthropist has agreed to give us $50,000 and is pursuing matching funds from others in a position to help us attain our goal.

100_0678

To date, we have commitments of over $80,000.

We are open and operating at full capacity, and the Theatre is booked through mid-November.  The show must go on!!

The Milton Development Corporation (The Milton Theatre) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax exempt organization, and donations are tax deductible.

100_0688

The pledges made will be redeemed at the time the purchase of the theatre is approved by the current lender.  No money is expected at this time, but this pledge is a commitment to provide the funds when the pledge is redeemed.

We are asking for your support and your donation.  Please call the office with your pledge or send an email to mdc110@verizon.net.  Let us know how you can help, how much you can give.

Please call 302-684-3400 and have one of the board members explain our plans.

This week-end on Saturday 9/11 is The Sue Matthews Quartet – “Jazz Standards from the American Songbook” at 8:00 p.m.

 100_0669

Thanks for your support….talk to you later…
