Southern Delaware is a great place for fundraising events.  Children & Families First has 2 important events to raise funds during the year.  The first one happened to be in May.  I will be sure to let you know next year the information because it was so much fun this year when the event called Brunch & Bubbly was hosted by the Lewes Yacht Club in Lewes, Delaware.

Basically, it was a brunch and shopping event with a percentage of the proceeds going to Children & Families First.  Local shops gathered through the room and guests were able to shops to their hearts delight. In this photo Jane & Georgie is showcased.

You could stop and sip bubbly and have something to eat…meet and chat with others that gathered on a beautiful day in Lewes.  The Lewes Yacht Club outdid itself with great food.  I am showing you this so that you can take a peek at the type of event that Children & Families First offers to the communities of Southern Delaware.

Old World Breads, Bakery, Lewes, Delaware, Artisan Bread Bakery, No Preservatives, No Enhancers, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn1435dscn1429

Nothing better than a cup of coffe early in the morning with fresh baked bread.  I remember years ago when my grandmother in Puerto Rico would always invite her neighbors for a cup a coffee and bread in the afternoons.  It was a routine.

dscn1434

Stopping at Old World Breads reminded me of that so long ago.  Old World Breads are making a statement at the Delaware Beaches and beyond.  They are located at 32191 Nassau Rd., Unit 4, Lewes, DE 19958  Tel. 302-313-5191  Website?  http://www.oldworldbreads.com.  Their bakery hours at this time of the year are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.  Sundays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

dscn1433

Directions:  From Rt. 1 driving North make a right turn on Nassau Rd, right before the Nassau Bridge.  Go 1/4 of a mile and they are on the right.  From Rt. 1 driving South make a left turn onto Nassau Rd., as soon as you go over the Nassau Bridge.  Go that 1/4 of a mile and they are on the right.

dscn1070

Old World Breads are found at farmers markets in the area and beyond:  Historic Lewes Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, Rehoboth Beach Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays, Milton Farmer’s markets on Fridays, Penn Quarter Farmer’s Market on Thursday, and Annapolis Farmer’s Market on Sundays.  During the summer season, you can also find Old World Breads at the farmer’s market in Bethany Beach and Sea Colony in Bethany Beach.

Arriving at Old World Breads….we were not the only ones taking the bakery in.  Gorgeous breads, delicious aroma.

dscn1431

dscn1428

The croissants were ready to go…and they were.  Local jams and jellies, the perfect addition to any baked goods.

dscn1426dscn1430

Tons of local peaches peeled for just out of the oven peach pies.

dscn1421

Plum pies made with Frangipane.  This is a pastry cream used in baking desserts, sweets, cakes and pancakes.  It is made with milk, sugar, flour, eggs, and butter, mixed with crushed macaroons or ground almonds.  It gives the baked goods a special taste.

dscn1425

And last but not least we took home some flat breads.  Surprise, surprise…a little kick to get those tastebuds going.

dscn1432

Stop for coffee….try their breads and baked goods.  Say hello.  A friendly staff, ready to tell you what baking bread is all about.

Please Note that Old World Breads also has wholesale and special occasions.

Talk to you later.  Have a great day…it is cooler out there!!

DE Beaches Eat!! Tomato, Peach, Corn and Feta Salad, Sugar Meets Salt, Easy, Delicious!! Perfect for Labor Day Cook-Out!!, Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches

The tomatoes are at the height of the season, the peaches are still sweet….this is pretty much a raw salad.  Bursting with flavor, it has everything to offer for a perfect end of the summer 2014 meal.

When I made this salad I used gluten free bread.  The recipe, actually calls for white bread with crusts removed.  Your choice.

dscn1155

TOMATO, PEACH, CORN, AND FETA SALAD

2 slices white bread, crusts removed, cut or torn into small pieces

1/2 cup plus 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Salt, to taste

2 ears fresh corn, shucked

4 ripe tomatoes, a variety of colors….or plain red will do.  About 2 lbs.

4 large peaches (about 2 lbs. too)

1/2 cup thinly sliced red onion or shallots (I used red onion.)

3/4 cups of sheep’s milk feta, crumbled

Pulse the bread in a blender or food processor until the bread breaks down into coarse crumbs.

In a medium skillet, over medium heat, warm 1/2 cup of oil.  Once warm, add breadcrumbs and gently toast until golden and crispy.  Transfer crumbs to a plate line with paper towels.  Season with salt.

Using a sharp knife, slice corn kernels off the cob.

Cut tomatoes and peaches, preferably into wedges.  Place in large bowl with onion slivers and corn kernels.  Season with salt, optional.

Add the Feta cheese.

Add  6 tablespoons of oil and toss to combine. And then, sprinkle your favorite white balsamic vinegar.  My choice was Cranberry Pear White Balsamic from the new store in Downtown Rehoboth Beach….The Olive Orchard.

Distribute salad among plates, then scatter breadcrumbs on top…..serve and enjoy!!

The House, Parkwood Street, The Tidewater, Bethany Beach, Delaware, Developer? Tidewater Realty, Ltd., John Merryman’s Family, Builder? Lane Builders, LLC, Lewes, Delaware, It Settled!!, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn9939

My husband, John Merryman, III’s testimony before passing away last August 31st was that during over the 3 decades in Bethany Beach, Delaware, he had developed more than enough houses to know the business.  He referred to Jeff Burton of Lane Builders as a consummate professional, easy to deal with and someone he was happy to be doing business with.

dscn2129dscn9938

John and Jeff designed The Tidewater, a home that was to be built on Parkwood Street in Bethany Beach.  The lots in Bethany are usually long and narrow, so a special house with plenty of bedrooms for a family and friends was born.

dscn9942dscn9940

This house was within walking distance to the Town of Bethany; its beaches, boardwalk, shops and restaurants.  It was located in a quiet street in Bethany.  Instead of coming through the front door all wet, you could come from under the house and leave your beach belongings there.

dscn9941 - Copy

Jeff Burton is the Managing Partner and President of Lane Builders, LLC, located at 1009 Kings Highway, Lewes, Delaware.  Tel. 302-645-5555.   Website?  http://www.lanebuilders.com.  You can also find Lane Builders on Facebook.

Upon John’s passing, we called Jeff and we also called the buyer who was from Northern Virginia.  I cannot imagine their thoughts in having to then deal with the widow.  Having been assured that the building was going to go as planned, they were confident in our ability to carry it through.

I am writing this post, which by the way, is very personal, since the year anniversary of John’s passing is around the corner.  I wanted to tell you the kind of builder Jeff was for us.  The first thing he said without hesitation was “I will make this process as easy as I can for you.”  And, he did.

Jeff Burton taking care of last minute details.

Jeff Burton taking care of last minute details.

Spiritually, John was guiding me through this process.  I believe that.

The house turned out to be so nice.  I met the owners on the day of the settlement when we were checking the house.

The floors were hand-scraped wood flooring, the tones of the house were soothing, lots of gray, white and blue on the walls and countertops.

dscn9950

dscn9947

dscn9951

The family is going to love having all those bedrooms and bathrooms.  A spacious laundry room…a must!

dscn9943

dscn9953dscn9946

I know that when the owners come up the stairs they will certainly enjoy the smooth flowing of their beach house.  They are already enjoying it, along with everything Bethany Beach has to offer.

dscn9965

This family had been coming to Bethany for many years.  They told me they were waiting for the right house….The Tidewater is going to be a place for rest and relaxation.  Bethany Beach is a family resort.  It is also known as The Quiet Resort.

dscn2143

dscn2141

Jeff Burton surprised me on that day.  The Tidewater is going to be always The Tidewater; in memory of John.  A home design that was their first one to be considered a preplanned home, custom built on your lot.  You can see a more detailed description of this house if you click on http://www.lanebuilders.com.

I will probably not have any contact with the new owners.  Our business is finished.  But, this house will always hold a special place in my heart.  John would have been so proud.

100_1249100_1489

My testimony?  I can’t say enough about Jeff Burton, his building partner, Keith Hastings, and their staff at Lane Builders.  If you are planning on building or remodeling at the Delaware Beaches, please give them a call.  You will not be disappointed.

Have a great day!

Destination? Modern Mixture Too, Restaurant, Review, Milton, Delaware, Nuevo Latino, Latin Cuisine, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

The height of the season and summer traffic can be a hair raising experience at the Delaware Beaches.  Finding parking is frustrating.

dscn0908

I thought about Milton, Delaware….just up the road from the Delaware Beaches.  This historic town was incorporated in 1807.  Milton is situated at the head of the Broadkill River.  It was settled in the 1600s, and it was named for the English poet John Milton.  It has 198 homes on its National Register of Historic Places.  Some of Milton’s homes range from one room dwellings to Victorian mansions; including the residences of 5 former governors.

dscn3394

The town prospered through shipping, shipbuilding and agriculture, which was supported by its inland port.

dscn3395

Last week my friend Cindi, who lives in Milton, and I decided to try the new Modern Mixture Too.  Modern Mixture’s sister restaurant in Downtown Rehoboth Beach has been a total success bringing new ways to cooking healthy Latin Cuisine, but keeping the essence of the Latin Cooking…plenty of flavors.

dscn0907

It takes no time to drive to Modern Mixture Too, located at 102 Federal Street, Milton, Delaware.  Tel.302-664-1228.  Milton is small and that small town atmosphere is what attracted me to meet my friend.  Having grown up in a small town I understand and enjoy the quietness that late afternoon and early evenings bring to these small towns.

It was so nice to be able to sit outside, enjoying homemade Sangria, nachos and a cool summer night.

dscn0896

dscn0903

Inside Modern Mixture Too offers plenty of seating with comfortable booths and bar.

dscn0905

This is the friendly staff that will be taking care of you in English or Spanish.

dscn0906

One of my favorites are the tamales prepared in-house.  On that particular day they had just finished vegetable tamales.  So, Cindi and I had those for appetizers.  Starting our evening with a little heat is always good.  Tamales are amazig when they are freshly made.

dscn0898

Cindi decided on the Alambre Argentino which had grilled carne asada, bacon, chorizo, red onions, bell pepeprs, topped with Chihuahua cheese and gaucho chimichurri.  It was served with rice, black beans, tortillas and guacamole.

dscn0900

Mine was the Veggie Alambre, which was full of vegetables but no meat.  It had just the right amount of spices and it really was so good.  Thanks for the recommendation!!

dscn0901

Even though we were tempted with desserts….and believe me they have very good ones, Cindi and I decided that we were completely satisfied.

An order to go of the Alambre Argentino was also very well received in my household.

The prices are reasonable, the food is delicious, served with plenty of free smiles.

Cheers!!  Gracias Amigos.
