The Globe Theater, Historic Berlin, Maryland, Restaurant, Kids’ Menu, Brunch, Art Gallery, Events, Live Music, Murder Mystery Dinner, Thursday, May 9th, 2nd Friday Art Stroll, Worcester County

dscn2225dscn2206

Up and down the coastal towns of Delmarva, residents and merchants are making sure that the historic towns they have chosen to live, work and play are preserved with respect and dignity.  Historic Berlin, Maryland is one of such towns just a few miles west of Ocean City, Maryland, in Worcester County.  Every time I visit Berlin, it brings back memories of many years driving my kids to and from Berlin, when they went to school.  The Globe was a place I probably stopped more than a few times a week.  So, when Cindi and I decided a few weeks ago to stop by…lunch at The Globe was a must.  We were the first ones there.  Perfect for those photo opportunities.

The Globe is located at 12 Broad St., Berlin, MD 21811.  Tel. 410-641-0784.  Website? http://www.globetheater.com. The Proprietor & General Manager is Jennifer Dawicki.

dscn2205

We were able to walk around at our own pace since we were early.  The first thing you will notice is their Coppertop Bar.  Plenty of stools available with happy hour from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m.

dscn2212

Upstairs, in the Balcony Art Gallery & Lounge, as well as throughout the Globe you will see works of local and regional artists on display.    On Thursday, May 9th….a Murder Mystery Dinner will be taking place at the Balcony Art Gallery & Lounge.  Once a month this event attracts many customers for a night of dining and mystery. Please call for tickets. 410-641-0784. $25/person.  7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

dscn2216

On the first floor, there are different areas for dining.  The Globe was a theater, so you might end up eating on a balcony.

dscn2218

By the Coppertop Bar.

dscn2217

Or, across from the stage, which is where Cindi and I decided to sit.

dscn2226

dscn2222

The Globe is open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner and Sunday Brunch.  It has Wi-Fi, offers a kids’ menu and it is also handicapped accessible.

It is funny how I love going out to lunch and dinner with friends…and then I start wondering what can I eat that is low fat, low carb, low sodium…crazy, isn’t it?  Why bother?

Cindi and I decided to be very good and this is what we had:

Black Bean Burger Wrap, made in-house, tucked away with spinach, avocado and an order of their most delicious fresh fried tortilla chips and a pickle.

dscn2228

Mine was the Jerk Chicken Wrap….grilled jerk chicken, spinach, pineapple, red onion, mozzarella cheese, and honey mustard dressing.  It was also served with their tortillas and a pickle.  That’s all we ate!!  I think we did well.

dscn2232

Love it When it Snows at The Beach…Again! Is Green the New “It” color for the Season? TaDa, Berlin, Maryland

Once again, we come back from a “heat” wave in February to a beautiful snowy day.  It is quiet and the snow is a bit wet.  It is about 34 degrees and it is so pretty.

dscn1179

I remember how much I carried on about my fig tree this past summer.  Some are waiting for the 2013 crop!!  Look at it then.

dscn7359

Look at it now….cold and bare.

dscn1183

Against the snow the green looks fantastic and someone told me that the “in” or “it” color for the season is green.  Blair, owner of Tada, located at 18 North Main Street in Downtown Berlin, Maryland has a shop where you can find gifts for all occasions. Tel. 410-641-4430.  Website?  http://www.berlintada.com.

In a corner of the shop you will see Blair’s artistic talent come to life.  She makes one of a kind necklaces…her imagination taker her to mix and match beautiful stones.  Thought I let you know in case you are looking for something for Valentine’s.

Good Morning Delmarva, Juicing, Popovers, Gluten Free, It’s Sunday!!

dscn0909

I am trying to stay ahead of the flu.  Believe me, I have been overexposed.  Some have it in my household…I got the flu shot, vitamins, and tons of liquids since I decided to start juicing.  Getting those nutrients directly from fruits and vegetables.  I hope it works.

I shopped for the juicer at some of our stores in Rehoboth Beach.  I decided on Jack LaLanne’s Power Juicer.  First of all it is a proven juicer.  Secondly, the price was $99.  There were some that were $49 but I did not know how they would hold.  And, then, there were the ones that were $200 and up.  I am a novice at this. The third attraction to this juicer was easy clean-up.

dscn0926

Juicing is expensive, no two ways about it.  I usually buy fresh but when you are juicing you need to buy in larger quantities.  I have beets, turnips, celery, oranges, melons, greens…I got avocados and bananas.  Please note that the juicer is strictly a juicer.  No smoothies; avocados and bananas do not have liquid, therefore blend those in a blender or food processor and then add to the already made juice.

I love Gala apples so this was one of my first juices.

dscn0912

Freshly squeeze orange juice is always a treat.  Juiced with the rind so as to absorb all vitamins.

dscn0923

Look at the color of the celery juice.  Celery is full of vitamins and low in fat.  It is also a natural diuretic.  Something new I learned is that some people are allergic to celery.  In Europe they disclose if products contain celery.

dscn0929

I decided to make popovers.  I have not been too successful at them.  It could be the gluten free flour used.  I am getting better.  I want them to be light but they still come out more muffin-like.  They were delicious, don’t get me wrong. I used the pulp collected in the pulp collector to give my popovers added flavor.

Before I post the recipe, let me tell you that I used an interesting gluten free flour.  Mama’s Almond Blend.  It has white rice flour, tapioca flour, potato starch, sweet rice flour and almond meal flour.  It is a light flour; non gritty.  To learn more visit http://www.glutenfreemama.com.

dscn0917

I also used a 100% Coconut sugar.  It is, apparently, the “in” sugar to use.  I, actually, won it at Good Earth Market & Organic Farm, located in Clarksville, Delaware.  http://www.goodearthmarket.com.  It is organically grown and more nutritious.  It smells like coconut, but it does not taste like it.  The taste is more like raw sugar with a hint of caramel.  Diabetics, please listen, because coconut sugar ha a low glycemic index, it is better for you.

dscn0914

Orange Popovers

3 eggs (room temperature)

1 tablespoon sugar

1 1/4 milk

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 1/4 cups gluten free flour (if not Celiac or without gluten sensitivity, use regular flour)

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons of orange zest or pulp

Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees.

In a large bowl whisk the eggs with sugar and zest.

Whisk in milk and 3 tablespoons of melted butter.

In another bowl whisk the flour with the baking powder and salt.

Whisk the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until small lumps only remain.

Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter and brush the inside of the popover or deep muffin pan.

Place the empty pan in the oven for about 10 minutes.  Don’t worry if the butter starts browning.

Take it out and then, carefully, fill them half way.  You can sprinkle some of the rind or pulp on top just before putting them in the oven.

dscn0918

Bake for about 40 minutes.

dscn0919

Nice and hot, ready to eat.

dscn0922

Great with honey.  I added to my raw honey some freshly squeeze orange juice and rind.  The Country Harvest raw honey came from Manchester, Maryland.  Dip or spread.

dscn0927dscn0928

Enjoy!!

A Christmas Poem, Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad

dscn0432

‘Twas the night before Christmas and Santa’s a wreck…How to live in a world that’s politically correct?

His sack was quite empty, limp to the ground;

Nothing fully acceptable was to be found

Something special was needed, a gift that he might give to all without angering the left or right

A gift that would satisfy, with no indecision,

Each group of people, every religion;

Every ethnicity, every hue,

Everyone, everywhere…even you.

So here is that gift, it’s price beyond worth…

“May you and your loved ones enjoy Peach on Earth”

Note:  This poem is just part of a poem written by Harvey Ehrlich in 1992.  It still fits so well.

Merry Christmas y Feliz Navidad

Cupcakes in Bloom, Bakery, Historic Berlin, Edible Bloomin’ Cupcake Bouquets, Gourmet Cupcakes, 100% Homemade, Worcester County, Maryland

dscn0630

My friend, Trish, and I had to stop and check out Cupcakes in Bloom.  The last time I was at this gourmet bake shop was back in May.  As the seasons change, Shawnee’s creations do as well.  She is the main event; a celebrity. Shawnee won the second place in the Cupcake Wars.

dscn0622

Cupcakes in Bloom is located at 120 N. Main St. in Historic Berlin, Maryland.  Tel. 410-641-9020.  You can also find Cupcakes in Bloom on Facebook.  Website?  http://www.berlincupcakes.com

I don’t know about you but don’t you think cupcakes have such a perfect size?  You really do not have to share.  And, you should not feel guilty, either.  I can see why they are so popular…..so much fun to eat.

Shawnee was explaining her cupcakes to some of her customers.  She has a loyal customer base.  I can see why; she is just so friendly, and her cupcakes speak for themselves.

I knew I would find interesting cupcakes for the holidays.  She has great prices too.  $2.50 each.  Buy 5 and get 1 free.

dscn0623

A specialty of Cupcakes in Bloom is their Bloomin’ Cupcake Bouquets.  They look so real.  Shawnee needs a couple of days notice.  You can call an discuss the order with her.  Tel. 410-641-9020.

dscn0625

Take a closer look…you might even find The Grinch.

Jeffrey Auxer Designs, Berlin, Gallery, Studio, Blown Glass, Fine Art, Classes, Parties, Maryland, Worcester County

dscn0540

Up and down the Delmarva Peninsula historic towns are being preserved by residents and merchants.  The Historic Town of Berlin is one example.  On any given day, this town, which by the way, looks like a movie set, is bustling with visitors.  If it is not one thing is another….but, they always have a concert, a festival, merchants’ stroll, you name it.  The shopkeepers are young and interesting, new restaurants have opened this summer; making Historic Berlin a shopping and dining destination.

From Rehoboth Beach and other Delaware Beaches, it takes about 45 minutes.  If you live on the Delaware and Maryland coast, then you are probably used to driving.  I really don’t mind it one bit.  A road trip?  I look forward to it!!

My friend, Susan, and I stopped at Jeffrey Auxer Designs.  The building is unique and it dates back to 1897.  It is located at 19 Jefferson St. in Berlin, Maryland.  It is behind the Atlantic Hotel, which is located on Main Street.  Can’t miss it.  It is the center of the town.  Jeffrey Auxer Designs closes on Monday, but it is open the rest of the week.  At this time of the year it was the perfect place to pick up a few Christmas presents.  His Tel. is 443-513-4210.  His website?  http://www.jeffreyauxer.com.

dscn0073

The ring holders were so cute.  Jeffrey also makes rings and earrings.

dscn0536

The art of blown glass.  The deep colors of the glass.  The amazing shapes.  All this you will find at Jeffrey’s shop.  A person who blows glass is called a glassblower, a glassmith, or a gaffer.

dscn0533dscn0538

Jeffrey offers classes, either individually or in a group setting.  You can also bring your party to the studio.  He has room for 8; kids or adults.  You can find more info. if you visit the above mentioned website.

dscn0537

I bought one of the ornaments and I also bought a couple of bowls.

dscn0076

The studio is so colorful and Jeffrey is very friendly and easy to talk to.

dscn0081

Berlin is beautiful this time of the year.  This is, definitely, a must stop shop while visiting this Historic Town.

dscn0534dscn0083

Note:  Jeffrey also exhibits at Gallery One, located at 32 Atlantic Avenue in Ocean View, Delaware.  It is a few miles west of Bethany Beach.

Talk to you later…
