I think I am curious, definitely…The First Town in The First State!! So much history, connecting the past with the present.
The Lewes Historical Society, http://www.historiclewes.org, will be hosting Delmarva Historic Haunts, http://www.delmarvahistorichaunts.com, to explore the curious happenings in Historic Lewes, Delaware. You do not have to walk far to be immersed in the history of Lewes.
On 2nd and Market Streets you will find Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church. The Parish was established in 1681 and it does have the oldest cemetery in Delaware. You can visit the cemetery….plenty of visitors do.
 
You will have 2 opportunities to investigate paranormal activities in Historic Lewes. The schedule is as follows:
Saturday, 10/19 – 2 times to choose from. Either 7 p.m. until 10 p.m., or, 10:30 p.m. until 1:30 a.m.
Saturday, 10/26 – The same schedule.

By participating in this haunt, you will investigate some of the mysterious activities. Delmarva Historic Haunts will show you the data that has been collected. They have done plenty of research of paranormal activity in the area and in locations like Gettysburg, Ft. Delaware, and many more.
The CANNONBALL HOUSE – It was built around 1765. It is now the home of The Lewes Historical Society’s Maritime Museum. It is a rare example of a Lewes house remaining on one site its entire existence. Location? The corner of Bank Street and Front Street.
The rest of the tour will take place visiting the Museums of The Lewes Historical Society at the Historic Complex. There are 9 buildings dating from the mid 1600’s to the late 1800’s. Location? 110 Shipcarpenter Street.
BURTON-INGRAM HOUSE – It dates to 1789. It is noted for the fine Federal period and colonial furnishings. This is an elegant home with several extraordinary museum pieces.
OLD DOCTOR’S OFFICE – Circa 1840. It houses collections of mid to late nineteenth century medical instruments. It is the only example of Greek Revival architecture in Lewes. It cannot be confirmed if it was the only building of that style constructed in Lewes. It contains about 500 volumes of medical texts.
RABBIT’S FERRY HOUSE – It dates to around 1740. This house is an example of rural Sussex County architecture. It reflects the hard and simple life of Southern Delaware’s 18th century farmers. This house if the home of the Lewes Historical Society’s fine collection of 18th century kitchen ware and furnishings.
You have the town, the experts and the buildings to become a paranormal investigator if only for a few hours…..have a great time!!

The first week-end of August is here!! Lewes is celebrating the first week-end of August with the following activities, events, and entertainment.
Saturday, 8/3 – The Lewes Historical Society Antique Show 2013 – 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. A 50th year celebration! Location? The Historical Society Complex at the Corner of Second Street and Shipcarpenter Street. Admission is $5 but children under 17 are free. Proceeds benefit their educational and preservation programs.
The show features 18th century to early 20th century antiques. All pieces are authentic. The Antique Show takes place among the Society’s 12 historic museums.
Casa Amici will feature a food booth, Vitelli’s Ice Cream and water Ice will have refreshing treats. Music by David Zipse.
Saturday, 8/3 – Sydney’s Music Revival takes place every Friday and Saturday at Bethany Blues Lewes. Location? 18385 Coastal Highway. Tonight Lil Ronie and the Grand Dukes. Entertainment begins at 8:30 p.m.
Sunday, 8/4 – Wake up with Yoga with Soul from 8 a.m. – 9 a.m. Yoga with Soul takes place every Sunday morning until September 1st. Just bring your mat or towel. Location? At Canalfront Park on Front Stree. It is free!!
Sunday, 8/4 – Noon until 2 p.m. Kalmar Nyckle will be docked at the Cape May Lewes Ferry Terminal. It is Delaware’s Ambassador. They offer 2 1/2 hour public sails and deck tours. Make reservations by calling 302-429-7447. Or, visit http://www.kalmarnyckel.org.
Also, on Sunday, it will sail from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. All sails are $60 and $40 for children 17 and under.

It is a beautiful day at the Delaware Beaches….a little bit of rain last night probably was more than welcomed by the Children’s Learning Garden, located in Stango Park near the Lewes Public Library on Kings Highway, as you enter Lewes, Delaware. In this learning garden families can see how local fruits and veggies grow.
I stopped to see it because even from the road it attracts attention. This garden was established in April 2013 by Lewes in Bloom. This organization started in 2002, just like everything else starts in communities throughout the United States with a small group of volunteers. Lewes in Bloom promotes the beautification and maintenance of Historic Lewes, and the community. It has won America in Bloom awards in 2003, 2005, and 2010, for cities with populations under 5,000. Families are invited to participate at the Children’s Learning Garden. Plenty of activities each week, free of charge, are on the schedule, all by Lewes in Bloom volunteers and members from the community.
Mondays – 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. – Story Hour with Miss Maureen from the Lewes Library! Litsten to her favorite books and complete a simple craft. Bring a blanket and picnic lunch to enjoy afterwards.
Thursdays in the Garden – Augst 1st brings Kids’ Zumba, August 8th is Kids’ Yoga, August 15th is Music with Miss Debbie, and August 22nd is Cooking with Miss Katie! What’s Growing in the Garden!

Lightship Overfalls is one of only 17 remaining lightships out of a total 179 built from 1820 to 1952. In 2011 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. It is also, one of seven lightships in this country still open to the public. Please visit http://www.overfalls.org.
This is going to be the First Annual Summer Evening Sundown BBQ at the Lightship Overfalls. It will take place on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. In case of rain….I think we will be safe this week, the BBQ will take place on Thursday, July 18th. Location? 219 Pilottown Rd. on the Canal, adjacent to Canalfront Park.
It should be a fun evening since the Lightship Overfalls’ deck will be open for dining. You know that on the deck you will get amazing views of the sunset and the surrounding waterfront area.
Visit with friends and meet new ones, as visitors and residents gather for a summer evening in Historic Lewes. There will be a lively steel band, and the meal will be pulled pork BBQ provided by Casa D’Amici.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for children. It will include the pulled pork on fresh baked rolls, pickles, chips, dessert and beverage of your choice…beer, wine, or soft drink.

Lewes, Delaware, is the perfect coastal town. It has historic charm, unique coastal flavor, unpretentious, laid-back, plenty of character….and a choice of playgrounds; the bay or the ocean. Shops and restaurants? You got it!!
When the other night, my friend, Debbie asked to go and watch a swim meet at the Lewes Yatch Club I immediately accepted. It was the end of the day. We hoped to enjoy a sunset, grab something to eat.
It was life in Lewes like any other night. This historic town is much loved and enjoyed by its residents…but just take a peek at the view…how could you not?
There were hundreds of kids, plenty of cheering and laughter, the University of Delaware research vessel was just coming home after a day out. And, Debbie and I had our chicken wraps.
Don’t forget to check the gardens that surround historic homes…..they are gorgeous!!
WHAT’S GOING ON LEWES?
CAPE WATER TAXI – ECO TOURS – OSPREY BANDING – Cape Water Taxi is what the name implies…a water taxi service. This week the eco tour takes you to watch how they place identification tags on the osprey chicks before they take off. This practice does not hurt the birds and it is done to gather information about the birds such as migration patterns. Tours are taking place, Tuesday, 7/2, Wednesday, 7/3, Friday, 7/5, and Monday, 7/8 from Fisherman’s Wharf at 10 a.m. Well, this is a weather dependent type of activity. And, if you want to take the water taxi to Dewey Beach, from Lewes, and back, it runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, every week-end from June through September, weather permitting. Thursday, 7/4 – Children’s Activities will take place on Second Street in Downtown Historic Lewes, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. At 9 a.m. Games and Activities. At 2 p.m. The Decorated Boat Parade will take place on the Canal with awards taking place afterwards at the Lightship Overfalls. At 5…ish, the Doo Dah Parade begins. They say it is infamous, they want you to join in the fun. It takes to the streets in Lewes. Jump in if you want to. No need to register or even plan to attend. All you need is your own fun spirit and if you have a kazoo, bicycle, wagon, yo-yo, or hula-hoop, bring them on. The parade route is from Manila Avenue, Kings Highway, Savannah Rd, 2nd Street, market Street, and Third Street.
Friday, 7/5 – HISTORY HAPPY HOUR – 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. Interesting dialog lead by local history buffs. The topics can range from the early explorers of the Delaware Bay to Lewes during the Revolutionary War. On this Friday, William H. J. Manthorpe, Jr. presents “A Century of Service – The Navy at Cape Henlopen 1898 -1996” at the Cannonball House located on Front Street. It is free, and a glass of wine will be offered at the conclusion of the presentation.

Lewes was settled by the Dutch in 1631. It is located where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is great for beach goers; the bay and the ocean beaches to choose to sit back and relax or play.
Lewes is also a very comfortable walking town. Within approximately half square mile you can stroll, shop, dine, and visit museums or juts enjoy how quaint this coastal and historic town is.

Take a tour of Delaware Bay and the Breakwater in a sit-on-top kayak! The tour is for beginning paddlers, but can be strenuous. 10 a.m. until Noon. All equipment is provided. Just bring water and sunscreen. Secure footwear only; no flip-flops. Ages 8 and up, but solo paddlers must be at least 13 years of age and all participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. “Cirque du Soleil” Worlds Away” – In this fantasy feature, a young woman in a small Mid-Western town goes to a traveling carnival one evening, where she is urged by a silent clown to visit the carnival’s circus and see The Aerialist, the show’s star attraction. She is entranced by The Aerialist, but during his act he misses a catch and falls to the ground. She rushes to help him, but then the ground beneath them gives away and they fall through into the dreamlike world of Cirque du Soleil…..PG rated. Runtime: 91 minutes.
Thursday, 6/20 – SUMMER SOLSTICE – 108 Sun Salutations from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Canalfront Park on 211 Front Street. This event is presented by Soul Yoga. Kick-off the summer out in the sun with a whole lotta sweat!! A celebration of the Summer Solstice. The teachers will guide you through 108 Sun Salutations. Get a team together and tag in and out like a relay…the more the merrier. Everyone is welcomed. $20 suggested donation, which will be collected at the park. Saturday, 6/22 and Sunday, 6/23 – MID-ATLANTIC SEA GLASS & COASTAL ARTS FESTIVAL – It will take place at the Historic Complex of the Lewes Historical Society at Second and Shipcarpenter Streets in Lewes. 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5 per person. Children under 12, free. A wrist band will be issued allowing entrance on both days. Wrist bands can be purchased in advance in Historic Lewes at Sand ‘n’ Stones on Front Street or the Society’s Museum Gif shop at the Ryves Holt House at Second and Mulberry Streets. Last year, about 3,000 visitors attended this event. Sea glass can be found all over the world, but the beaches of the northeast United States, California, northwest England, Mexico, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Nova Scotia Italy and southern Spain are famous for their bounty of sea glass, bottles, bottle lips and stoppers, art glass, marbles, and pottery shards. The best time to look are during spring tides and during the first low tide after a storm.
Saturday, 6/22 – TOUR THE LIGHTHOUSE! – Climb to the top of the Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse and take a trip to the Harbor of Regufe Lighthouse for photos. 10:00 a.m. Reservations are required. Please call 302-644-7046. Tours are subject to change and depend on the weather conditions. I have taken this tour and it was truly amazing. Tours depart from the pier located behind the Cape-May Lewes Ferry Terminal in Lewes. Arrive at leat 15 minutes in advance. No sandals or open toe shoes are allowed. Wednesday, 6/12 – Seining the Bay – Search the shallows with a seine net, catching fish, snails, shrimp, crabs, and other critters. Dress appropriately; you will get wet. No flip-flops. Friday, 6/14 – Family Boat-Building Weekend on the Banks of the Canal – Lewes was a shipbuilding town, where hundreds of vessels were built. Rekindle this art in Lewes as part of their Family Boatbuilding Weekend over Father’s Day weekend. Support their participating groups and families as they build wooden boats called “Bevin Skiffs” June 14-16 in front of the Lewes Lifesaving Station to view more than 16 wooden boats made by wood boat enthusiasts. Saturday, 6/15 – The 23rd Annual Lewes Garden Tour 2013 – Rain or Shine!! It is sponsored by The Lewes Chamber of Commerce, http://www.leweschamber.com. This is a self-guuided tour of 7 private gardens and one public garden in the Historic Seaport town of Lewes. Five of this year’s gardens are all located in or near the Historic Distric. Many of them are walking distance from the Zwaanendael Park where the Garden market and the Chamber’s Visitor Center are located. Two of the gardens are located on the Lewes Beach-side of the canal.
Lewes’ newest public garden will be on the tour. The Children’s Learning Garden, designed to teach children about all aspects of gardening, is a new initiative by Lewes in Bloom, the award-winning volunteer organization responsible for the beautification of Lewes.
It will be a fun day with more than 40 vendors specializing in garden related retail items and working artists will be in the tour gardens painting. Tour visitors can enjoy beverages and lunch in the Refreshment Tent provided by Cafe Amici in Zwaanendael Park with coffee service beginning at 8 a.m. During the hours of the tour, free shuttle service is available for ticket holders.
