Officially opening Summer 2015 – Memorial Week-End….no staycation for many, getting out of town and heading out to the Delaware Beaches. These coastal towns are pretty much year-round resorts. Every season brings surprises to the DE Beaches. The best part is that Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, and Fenwick Island….they are all unique. Even though they are all by the water’s edge, their make up is different.

Friday, 5/22 – OVERFALLS FOUNDATION “FLOAT YOUR BIG RED BOAT” – This is the annual Opening Party & Auction, 6 – 9 p.m….a fund raising event to help support the Overfalls Foundation and its programs. Lightship Overfalls is one of only 17 remaining lightships out of a total of 179 built from 1820 to 1952. It is a National Historic Landmark and one of 7 of its kind in this country still open to the public. Tickets are available in advance at $45, or at the door for $50. Saturday, 5/23 – KALMAR NYCKEL ARRIVES!! It arrives just in time for the first long week-end of Summer 2015!! Location? Cape May-Lewes Ferry Public Pier. This ship is a faithful recreation of the original ship that brought the earliest settlers from Sweden to Delaware.
It will head out daily….twice on Memorial Day, under full sail for a 2 1/2 hour tours of The Harbor of Refuge, off the coast of Lewes and at the mouth of the Delaware Bay estuary where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. The Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau sponsors its 25th Annual Lewes Garden Tour from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. An extra ticketed event has been added on Friday, 6/19…A “Garden Party” from 5 to 7 p.m. will take place at Shipcarpenter Square. It is open to the public with tickets priced at $50 each that will include a ticket to the Garden Tour on Saturday. On Saturday’s Garden Tour there will be 10 private gardens showcased. Coastal Highway or Rt. 1 is our major “highway” traveling through the Delaware Beaches into Ocean City, Maryland. You could tell the “gates” were opening already. Plenty of cars dragging summer gear. It is, afterall, the official opening of Summer!! Even though all the towns located at the Delaware Beaches enjoy visitors year-round, it is at this time of the year when we look forward to doing everything our coastal towns have to offer.
So, if you are visiting the First Town in the First State…..this historic town has plenty to offer this holiday week-end.
Friday, 5/24 and Saturday, 5/25 – Kalmar Nyckel Day Sail from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. The Kalmar Nyckel is Delaware’s Tall Ship. If you want to know more, please visit http://www.kalmarnyckel.org. The tall ship will be at the Lewes Ferry Terminal. It costs $60 for adults and $40 for children 17 and younger. For reservations, please call 302-429-7447.
Friday, 5/24 – Lightship Overfalls Opening Party and Auction from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. This is a 75th Birthday Party for Big Red – Annual Party and Auctions. This historic lightship is celebrating, so dress up, don your party hat, get a birthday card and join the fun. Location? The Virden Center on the University of Delaware Marine Campus. Tickets are $40 per person in advance and $45 at the door, if available. The evening will include party games, raffles, silent and live auctions and great food and drinks.

Saturday, 5/25 through Monday, 5/27 – Maritime Weekend at Zwaanendael Museum, located at 102 Kings Highway. All Day! This museum was modeled after the town hall in Hoorn, The Netherlands. It commemorates Delaware’s first European colony established by the Dutch in 1631.
Saturday, 5/25 – Kayaking – Delaware Breakwater Kayak Eco-Tours from 10 a.m. until Noon. Enjoy a tour in sit-on-top kayaks. Trips are designed for beginners, but can be strenous. Equipment is provided. Closed-toe shoes recommended. Ages 8 and up, solo paddlers must be at least 13. Limit 10. $25 for solo-kayaks, or $35 for tandem. Please call 302-645-6852 for more information.
Saturday, 5/25 – Pirate Sail on the Kalmar Nyckel, Delaware’s Tall Ship from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Walk the plank of this authentic seagoing re-creation of a 17th Century Dutch pinnace. Saturday, 5/25 – Seining the Bay from 11 a.m. until Noon. Meet at the Seaside Nature Center, inside the Cape Henlopen State Park. Search the shallows of Delaware Bay with a seine net looking crabs, fish and other bay creatures. Dress appropriately, meaning dress to get wet. It is for ages 5 years of age and older. Get out of town….let’s go to the beach! Delaware has 25 miles of Delaware Bay coastline, 26 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline, and 115 miles of inland bay shoreline. Three rivers, creeks, and ponds cover a fifth of the state. Plenty to do.

 Very low tide at the same spot in Cape Henlopen State Park The beach towns in Delaware are adjacent to one another. It is very easy to drive to one town or another and enjoy what each of them have to offer. They all have something for everyone to enjoy.
This small, quaint town, offers so much to its visitors and residents. There are shops, restaurants and the friendliest people.

The Lewes Historic Farmers’ market is calling for Entries!! – 2011 Great Tomato Recipe Contest. The National Farmers’ Market Week is August 7th until the 13th. The Market will be holding their 5th Annual Tomato Festival on Saturday, 8/13th. The Great Tomato Recipe Contest will be held that day.

Tuesdays, 8/3 and 8/10 – WSFS Bank Summer Music at Stango Park on King’s Highway, next to the Lewes Public Library. These free concerts start at 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs and repellent. More info? Please call 302-645-7777.
Thursday, 8/5 – First Thursday – Celebrate Lewes Life. This event is from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and it is sponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Historic Commercial District Committee.
The partial closings of 2 streets allow entertainment and activities in the street. Live entertainment, kids’ acitivities, and extended store hours.

The Village of Five Points
This community is located off of Savannah Rd., on the left after you cross the Five Points intersection in Lewes.
It is a community with its own Town Center surrounded by single family homes, condominiums, and townhouses.
8/5 – Summer on The Green. This is the 5th year of free events at the Village of Five Points, featuring live music and family movie screenings. All you need is your lawn chair. On Thursday, the 5th, the movie will be The Twilight Saga New Moon. It starts at sunset.
The Twilight Saga New Moon is the second movie of the “Twilight” series. It is the romance between a mortal and a vampire. Starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Ashley Greene, and Rachelle Lefevre.

I don’t even remember how many years it has been since I visited Lavender Fields. Some weeks ago, a friend mentioned the farm. On Tuesday, when I visited the Rehoboth Beach Farmer’s Market, there they were.

From Rt. 1 North or South, take Rt. 9 and 404 West toward Georgetown, travel 4 miles, just before the railroad tracks take a left on Cool Spring Rd. Travel 7/10 of a mile to Lavender Fields at Warrington Manor LLC (#18864), on the right.
Lavender Fields is a historic 5 acre property that dates to 1776.
Everything is done by hand from planting to harvesting. Lavender is easy to grow in and around the Delmarva Peninsula because of its favorable climate and soil.
The herb, has calming properties; it can also be used for cooking.
This farm hosts tour groups, luncheons, teas and special events. Please give them a call and check the website for all kinds of great information.
You will find Lavender Fields on Saturdays at the Historic Lewes Farmers’ Market located at Shipcarpenter and 3rd St. from 8 until Noon.
On Tuesdays you will find them at the Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market located at Grove St. Park from 12 until 4 p.m.
