Agave, Restaurant, Tequila Bar, Mexican Food, Review, Lewes, Delaware, Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches, The Art of Wining & Dining

On July 27, 2009 I wrote my first post on Agave. I was new at this thing called posting. Creating a blog that is pretty much a diary. I did not include any photos. Did not know the importance of photographs due to the fact that we are such visual individuals.

I said Hola Amigos. Why not? Spanish is my first language. As it was then today’s Agave still has Latin music in the background. The huge and delicious margaritas are still served on colorful glasses. The menu does not change much, but for some reason patrons don’t get tired of it. From 2009 I have written posts on Agave. From being particularly upset that you cannot get in because it is so popular. I changed that quickly. I go for late lunches. It works great.

Agave is located at 137 2nd St., Lewes, DE 19958. Tel. 302-645-1232. Website? http://www.agavelewes.com

A favorite drink of mine is the Avocado Martini. First thing to know is that it is not on the menu. It takes more than a few minutes to make. Specially customized for you. The other day Alec made this delicious one.

Friends that have tried it have loved this Avocado Martini. It is smooth, has cilantro and not a salted rim….caramelized sugar instead.

Agave has a beautiful and large Watermelon Salad. Worth ordering and share it with a friend.

The Guacamole is excellent too.

Mango and Avocado Salad is a favorite. Top it with your favorite meat, or have it by itself. Never enough avocados.

The Puffy Tacos are fish tacos but the tortilla is puffy. Grilled Mahi Mahi, jicama slaw, pico de gallo and Mexican lime crema. Rice and black beans as a side dish.

The Corn on the Cob is truly amazing. During the summer at the Delaware Beaches the sweetest corn can be found. Agave’s Corn on the Cob is covered in Chipotle Mayo, Queso Fresco and Lime. Messy, but Oh So Good!!

No dessert was necessary unless you thought about having a Mango Frozen Margarita!!

A great dinner can change your day around. More so if enjoyed with friends.

Saludos y Hasta Luego.

Please remember to check my Facebook Page and leave me some comments. It is good to hear from you. Thanks.

Out & About, The Bungalow on 2nd, Lifestyle Boutique, Lewes, Delaware, Shopping, Shop Local, Small Business Saturday, November 24th, Delaware Beaches, Historic Lewes, Holiday Shopping

I was out and about with a friend on Second Street in Lewes, Delaware.  The Fall is the time for us “locals” to get out and see what is new.  A relaxed way of discovering the town.  No parking, which makes a big difference. My friend, Madelon, and I loved the storefront of this boutique that we had not noticed in the past.  It is called The Bungalow on 2nd.  Second Street is really Main Street in Lewes.

I am sure some of you will disagree but I find boutique shopping the most comfortable way to shop.  These shops in small towns all over the United States give clients the opportunity to get to know the store owners. You get a one on one service.

The young woman behind the counter I had to engage in conversation.  If you were in a big mall that usually does not happen.  No time for small talk, really.  Her name is Kaitlin and she has been opened for just about 6 weeks or so.  The shop is adorable; so very well appointed.  The store is not crowded and she has done a great job in redoing the shop.  Before starting this new venture she was a 9th grade teacher.  It would be great for you to stop by and welcome her to the community.  The Bungalow on 2nd is located at 142 2nd St., Lewes, DE 19958.  Tel. 302-644-1544

You can find clothing, presents for friends and family and, of course, a little indulgence for yourself, as well.

There is nothing like the right accessory to enhance an outfit.  You can find necklaces, earrings, and bracelets for all tastes.

Clean looks, napkins, table runners, candles, home accents…..all very pretty and affordable.

November 24th it is called Small Business Saturday.  Obviously, we live in small coastal towns and promoting the local businesses is something a lot of us find dear to our hearts.  We wish Kaitlin much success and look forward to stopping by again.

Until then, have a good one!!

Markets are rising in popularity because consumers can get fresh produce directly from the farm.  The pick of the day, shall we say.

Learning about ground cherries.  Had not seen them before.  They have a papery husk, which encloses the small fruit.  The fruit is small and orange.  Ground cherries are part of the same family as the tomatillos.  They are good in pies and they are also good with salsa and in a salad.

Historic Church, Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church, The First Church in the First Town in the First State, The Churchyard, The Labyrinth, Lewes, Delaware, Southern Delaware

dscn5570

Sundays are days of worship, but on this Sunday as the tragedy in Charleston, South Carolina, is still fresh in our minds and hearts, it is also a day for reflection.

Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church is the First Church in the First Town in the First State.  It is located at 2nd & Market Streets in Lewes, DE 19958  Tel. 302-645-8479  Website?  http://www.stpeterslewes.org

You can imagine how surprised my friend, Cindi, was when I asked her if she wanted to walk around The Churchyard at Saint Peter’s.  After all, I had invited her to Lewes to spend the day celebrating her birthday.  Graveyard? Birthday?  That was not on the agenda, so she thought.

This is a historic Church.  It is beautiful in its simplicity.  It is an Episcopal Church.  The doors of the Church are open 24 hours a day, providing a sanctuary in Lewes for spiritual reflection, meditation, and prayer.  I love a totally quiet church.  I enjoy visiting them to catch a quiet moment away from all the news and the hectic world we live in.  I am in awe of their beauty and strength.

dscn4936

dscn5566

Saint Peter’s Parish was founded in 1681.  The original church building was finished in 1724, sat in front of the current structure.  A second church, consecrated in September 1808, had a small bell tower. The bell rings every Sunday announcing their services from that tower.

dscn5567

The building in which services are held today was constructed from 1854 to 1858.  A steeple was added in 1870 and the Sacristy was added in 1903-4.

Among Saint Peter’s historical possessions are the communion table used in the original church of 1724, a prayer book showing the changes made after the War of Independence, and a silver communion service given by John Penn, grandson of William Penn, on June 10, 1773.

dscn5572

As Cindi and I started to walk the Churchyard her attitude changed completely…from total perplexity to inquisitiveness.  She saw other visitors walking around, reading the tombstones.

dscn4944

In addition to the Churchyard, Saint Peter’s owns the oldest cemetery in the state of Delaware.  The Pilottown Cemetery was the site of the first western settlement in what is now Delaware.  Some of the early colonists are interred there on Pilottown Rd.

The most noteworthy graves are marked and there is information for you to follow them.

dscn4924

The oldest tombstone is the one from Margaret Huling. #17  This is what the inscription says:  Here lyeth ye body of Margaret ye widow of James Huling who desert Febry ye 16th in ye 76th yeare of her Age 1707 Born 1631.

dscn4925

The second oldest is #18.  It also belongs to the Huling family.  It says:  Huling mARTHA HIS WIFE deCEST FEBRY YE 1708 IN YE 8TH YEAR of HER AGE.  There is a portion of the stone broken so the whole inscription cannot be read.

The Labyrinth – It is an ancient symbol found in many traditions around the world.  It is not a maze.  It only has one path with no tricks or dead ends.  You are not to solve a puzzle, which creates anxiety.  The Labyrinth shoud lead us to the Source of our solutions, creating peace.  And God knows, we need peace.

dscn4934

Walking a labyrinth becomes a metaphor for spiritual journey.  It is used as a form of walking meditation or contemplative prayer.  The Labyrinth helps us find inner peace.  It welcomes those of all faith traditions and those with no traditions at all.

dscn4933

There is no right or wrong way to walk the Labyrinth.  With only one path in….follow it and you will arrive at the center.  Each walk is unique.  You may want to take a moment to breath deeply and focus on an intention for your walk.

The center is a place of meditation and prayer.  As you can see visitors leave some offerings.

dscn5574

Stop by and discover.  Have a good one!!

Destination? Lewes Canalfront Park, Historic Lewes, Delaware, Annual Picnic in The Park, Lewes’ Restaurants, Dogfish Head Beer, Wine, Games for Kids, Music, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn5522

There is nothing better than a picnic.  Today was a favorite day at Canalfront Park located at 211 Front St. in Historic Lewes, Delaware.  It is an annual event.  There were over 800 people in attendance.  What a fabulous day it was.  No humidity, blue skies…just perfect for an outdoor picnic.  A time to relax with the community, to forget the news of the day.  Picture perfect….not many words are necessary.

dscn5548

When visiting Lewes, please do check the website, http://www.lewescanalfrontpark.org.  They are offering so many events and activities; Yoga in the Park, Zumba in the Park, Yoga Summer Solstice on Sunday, 6/21, Cinema by the Canal is starting in July, and Concerts by the Canal are also starting in July.  The schedule is on their website.  Tel. 302-645-2795.

dscn5543

Lewes is such a picturesque town.  The site of the Canalfront Park has been in existence since 1631.  It is where long ago the earliest Dutch settlers created their homes and built and launched their ships.

dscn5552

My friend, Cindi, and I were looking forward to this picnic.  Last year was the first time we attended and it was just amazing.  Lewes’ restaurants were serving their specialties.  We were ready.

dscn5531

First things first….stopping at Dogfish Head.  They were serving 2 types of beers; one heavier than the other, but both delicious.  That’s Cindi!!

dscn5518

A second stop at Agave.

dscn5519

They were serving their Fresh Ceviche which I had and loved…

dscn5520

They also had their Beef Tenderloin Chili….by far this is the best Chili made with beef tenderloin.  It was a bit cool today; perfect.

dscn5521

Nectar’s offerings were outstanding. Quinoa Cups, which I had.  The super grain was excellent.

dscn5523dscn5528

Chicken Salad Sliders!  I think chicken salad is so good for summer, don’t you?

dscn5529

Nectar’s PB & J Meatballs are locals’ favorites.

dscn5527

Nectar is also a Juice Bar….offering, here, at the picnic, Carrot-Apple-Ginger Juice.

dscn5530

From Jerry’s we tried their Shrimp and Crab Deviled Eggs….I liked the shrimp deviled eggs the best.

dscn5558

Visitors coming to the Delaware Beaches love crabcakes….Jerry’s are very popular.  For the Picnic in the Park they offered Crabcake Sliders.

dscn5557

From Kindle…Chickpea Salad.

dscn5559dscn5561

And they were also serving Lobster Salad Sandwiches.

dscn5560

Plenty of fun for the Kids…games, balloons, cotton candy.

dscn5533

dscn5536

dscn5538

This llittle boy and this little girl…loved their photos. The girl gave me permission to take her picture.  Vey creative balloons!

dscn5534dscn5541

Cotton Candy…..when I was a young child I had a small cotton candy machine.  It worked!!  So seeing this one at the picnic for the second year in a row…. childhood memories.

dscn5539dscn5540

The Lightship Overvalls always a fixture at Canalfront Park.  Lightship Overfalls is one of only 17 remaining Lightships out of 179 built from 1820 – 1952.

dscn5535

In 2011 it was designated a National Historic Landmark.  Its birthday is Wednesday, 6/17, and a free event will be taking place.  The public is invited from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the ship.  Please check http://www.overfalls.org for tours, events and historic fact about this Lightship.

Cindi and I decided to take a spot under one of the tents to enjoy some tastings.  I was just telling Cindi that I have been in the area for so many years and for some reason I did not know a single person there…..Oh no…I did, Richard!!  He proceeded to take a seat and we continued the conversation.

dscn5562

I almost forgot to mention the DJ.  He was so good.  He moved around, kept the music and the tempo just right…even announced the raffle winners!!

dscn5516

And something you usually do not see in Lewes…a Blimp!

dscn5555

Not every day is a picnic, but today, celebrating my friend’s birthday…priceless!!

On Front Street you will find the 1812 Memorial Park.  On April 6 through April 8, 1813 Lewes sustained heavy cannon fire from the British ships, and was bombarded by Congreve rockets, the first use of this technology against the Americans.

Not knowing was Congreve rockets were…I was curious.  These rockets were developed by Sir William Congreve in 1804.  He registered 2 patents, and published 3 books on rocketry. It is a long story, but one interesting tidbit is the fact that: It was the use of ship launched Congreve rockets by the British in the bombardment of Fort McHenry in the U.S. in 1814 that inspired the fifth line of the first verse of the United States’ National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner”: “and the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air”.

dscn4812dscn4816

Along with the 1812 Memorial Park, on Front Street, you will find the City Dock.  200 feet long along Front Street, it can accommodate small and large vessels.  For boat slip info., please call 302-644-9069.
