“That’s My job, to lift people up with great food.” paul prudhomme

The opening of the restaurants in Southern Delaware I could not wait for. Don’t get me wrong, when you like to cook it does not matter. But what matter is the ambiance of a restaurant full of people, having fun and enjoying beautifully prepared food using local products. This part of the country is full of amazing chefs….it is a foodie’s destination in case you did not know.

I am enjoying the fact that so many people have taken cooking during the lockdown. There is nothing better when you put food in your mouth that has been cooked with love and not rushed.

It has been some time since I visited Good Earth Market located at 31806 Good Earth Lane on Rt. 26 in Ocean View, DE. Depending where you are coming from you turn on Rt. 26 in Bethany Beach, west, and go about 3 or miles and after you pass the Rt. 17 intersection continue a bit longer and it will be on your left hand side. Tel 302-537-7100 Website? http://www.goodearthmarket.com

It was the perfect evening. A full moon, low humidity. Al Fresco dining does taste better. At Good Earth Market dining outdoors is taken to a different level. You are among nature. If the weather does not cooperate, they do have an enclosed screened in porch where you can dine and still get a good view of the gardens.

Get your drinks and walk around the property. In making the reservation I called the restaurant and they gave me Sue Ryan’s number. She is the owner and so nice and friendly. At this time of limited reservations she is taking such calls.

A new menu but also their traditional menu was offered. Good wine list and attentive service.

For a first course their Crab & Avocado Salad with a side of corn tortillas was plentiful and delicious.

I had the Shrimp & Scallop Ceviche…chiles, coconut, citrus, Baywater Bibb Lettuce Roll ’em Ups. Spicy!! But I like that heat.

For our second course we had their Good Earth Wedge. Romaine, Heirloom cherry tomatoes, smoky Benton’s Bacon (so crispy), pickled shallots and creamy blue cheese. As you can see a photo says a thousand words and at Good Earth their presentation climbed up to a different level.

I love beets and can roast my own. So choosing their Roasted Beet and Arugula Salad with toasted walnut and hemp seed granola, whipped feta and a lemon vinaigrette gave it a light summery taste.

A dining experience for sure with the Strawberry Moon watching.

What to choose for our third course. Scallops I enjoy so much. This particular offering of Good Earth was awesome. Look at this photo. Pan Roasted Dayboat Scallops with smoky bacon asparagus and black garlic vinaigrette.

Shrimp & Grits…. I do have a weakness for this dish. Having it in Charleston gives it a different meaning but here in Southern Delaware they can really also prepare it well. Full of flavor and spice, Good Earth’s was delicious and enough to take a doggie bag; not really. Sadie would not like it. Haha. It had aged chorizo, tomato broth and creamy corn grits.

We did not have dessert. I think we were very satisfied. But their desserts looked very good. A sweet ending definitely.

This was such an enjoyable evening. I hope you do visit them while you are at the beach. And if you are a resident, please go.

So until next time remember “one cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well”…

The Birch Tree Cafe, Clarksville, Delaware, Restaurant, 100% Gluten Free, Espresso Bar, Smoothies, Baked Shoppe, Good Earth Market & Organic Farm, Delaware Eats Gluten Free, Delaware Beaches, Welcome to The Beaches

dscn9698

When my husband, John, was first diagnosed 6 years ago with celiac disease, eating gluten free became a way of life.  It is the only treatment for people with celiac disease and gluten sensitivities.  It is an allergy to wheat and its derivatives.  It does not stop just by not eating gluten, but also, you have to watch out for products that contain gluten and cross-contamination.  Believe me, there are many, including prescription drugs.

Needless to say, we learned quickly and just like anything, you adapt.  He really would have preferred to have had chicken fried steak, sweet breads, or anything traditionally cooked, but all in all he was pretty good about it.  He had to.

In 2008 people would say, how lucky we were because prior to that year, not much was on the market.  Nowadays, I say, how lucky everyone is because restaurants, grocery stores, and gourmet shops have jumped on the band wagon….oh yes, it is definitely a business.  There is still more to do but if you have a gluten allergy, then, Welcome to the Beach!

dscn9697

The Birch Tree Cafe is Delaware’s 100% Gluten Free restaurant.  It is also an espresso bar and a bake shoppe.  It is located in Clarksville, which is about 4 miles west of Bethany Beach on Rt. 26.  The actual address is 31826 Good Earth Lane.  Tel. 302-539-2468.  You can find The Birch Tree Cafe on Facebook and Twitter.

dscn9680

dscn9677

I stopped by to get a few things for a friend in Rehoboth Beach.  Some special treats.  It was late in the day, but Cathy Berzins, Co-Owner, and Chef, was there like always.  She opens every day.  And, this is what I got.

dscn9701

Muffins:  2 cinnamon, 2, blueberry, 2 chocolate chip….my friend has a sweet tooth.  These muffins, besides being gluten free were also dairy free and nut free.

Everything is baked by Cathy from scratch, so I also got Multi Grain with Flax bread; 6 whole grains plus flaxeed.

Could not resist the Pecan Brownies….a classic made also dairy free.

dscn9676dscn9673

Living Gluten Free in Delaware….is all about food.  Every 2nd Tuesday of every month, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. the public is invited to join The Birch Tree Cafe and discuss the Gluten Feree Lifestyle.  Share recipes, stores, and dining advice….we all have something to say about that, cooking/baking how-to’s and product information.  Cathy will also have samplins.  Any questions, pease call 302-539-2468.

The Birch Tree Cafe features its own pizza crust.  To me, that was the hardest thing to achieve.  Cathy also offers quiche, sandwiches, salads and soups.  Her cream of crab soup is her signature dish.  If you have been coming to Bethany Beach, you might remember that Cathy owned South Bethany Seafood Market.  The soup is made with organic cream, organic milk and touched with a finish of sherry.

Her breads and muffins can be ordered in quatities, just give her a call.  Any other dietary restrictions or allergies….she can handle that, as well.

The Birch Tree Cafe sits inside Good Earth Market & Organic Farm, http://www.goodearthmarket.com.  You walk through the market and pick up natural products, groceries, and then step outside to see the actual farm.

dscn9684

dscn9689

Now you know that if you have celiac disease or gluten allergy, even a sensitivity…..the Delaware Beaches have it all.  You don’t have to arrive carrying tons of groceries.  Relax, you are at the Beach!

dscn9687

Have a great day!

1st Annual Rehoboth Beach VegFest, Outdoor Festival, A Success in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Exhibitors, Speakers, Tastings, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn3929

Animal friendly cuisine, the benefits of choosing plant based foods.  I wanted to learn more.  Then, I came upon the card that announced an upcoming new festival in Rehoboth Beach….VegFest!  It would be a vegetarian celebration at the Beach.  It would feature speakers, cooking demonstrations, samples, exhibitors, food vendors and a little something for everyone…loved the vegetable garden, including the sensory garden where kids could touch and feel what was growing.

dscn3952

dscn3954

The festival was sponsored by Compassion Over Killing (COK), a national non-profit animal protection organization based in Washington,DC.  COK has another office in Los Angeles.  Since 1995, they have been working to end animal abuse.  If you are in Washington  on Saturday, September 28th, COK will be presenting DC VegFest.  More info?  Please visit http://www.cok.net.

dscn3932

Visiting Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland?  Both cities have online vegetarian resourses…where to eat in town.  Please check http://www.vegdc.com, and http://www.vegbaltimore.com.

In Rehoboth Beach you will find a social and outreach organization called VegRehoboth, a sister sponsor to this outdoor festival.  It is open to all residents and visitors to our beaches.  Even if you have that curiosity.  Some people want to cut back, some are vegetarians, vegans, and some called themselves part-time vegetarians.  VegRehoboth hosts social gatherings; make new friends, information and great food.  For more information, please visit http://www.vegrehoboth.com.

VegFest was held on a hot day but with a nice breeze.  Tents were set up to accommodate the speakers and cooking demonstrations.

dscn3922

One of the speakers, Dr. Ruby Lathon who is a holistic health and wellness expert is an advocate for plant based nutrition.  She made a couple of dishes, one in particular, caught my attention.  Made with kale and mango.  As soon as I get the recipe, I will put it on the post.  It looked so easy and it was delicious.  To learn more about Dr. Lathon’s story, please visit http://www.rubylathon.com.

Sugar Blues, Kari Ainsworth, Health Coach, Licensed Massage Therapist, The Birch Tree Cafe, 100% Gluten Free Restaurant, Good Earth Marked & Organic Farm, Clarksville, Delaware

dscn0859

My New Year’s resolution this year was not to make any.  It is easier that way.  You don’t have to feel so guilty a couple of days later when the diet goes out the window.  If I had made a resolution; dieting would have been the one.  I am always on some diet or another.

But no, I think this year I want a little bit more.  I want to imagine myself waking up rested, thinking clearly, full of energy and interest in the day ahead.  So, I was excited to find an invite on Facebook.  It said something like “Are Sugar Blues getting you Down?”  Hmm, sounded interesting.  This time of the year is the quietest at the Delaware Beaches.  I love it because is a time to recharge those batteries; to kick back and relax.  There is still plenty to do.  The beaches are not dead by any means.  Starting the year over with this event, perfect!!

dscn0858

Then, I saw that Kari Ainsworth, LMT, IC, CHHC, was going to be giving the talk.  I met Kari this year and she is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Cosmetologist, Intrinsic Coach, Yoga Instructor and Holistic Health Coach.  Her company is Kia Massage, LLC.  Her Tel. is 302-362-2033. Website?  http://www.kiamassagellc.com.

This event was going to be taking place at The Birch Tree Cafe, located inside Good Earth Market at 31826 Good Earth Lane, Clarksville, DE 19970.  This is 4.8 miles west of Bethany Beach, on Rt. 26.

dscn0878

The Birch Tree Cafe is a 100% Gluten Free restaurant.  Chef and Owner is Cathy Berzins. They carry soups, coffees, lattes, salads, quiches, sandwiches, muffins and gluten free baked goods.

dscn0876dscn0865

From January 7th until the 18th, there will be a limited menu due to vacation time.  It will be closed on Saturday, 1/12.  Regular times and menu will resume on the 19th.  Tel. 302-539-2468.  Website?  http://www.thebirchtreecafe.com.

dscn0861

I was not sure how many people were going to be attending.  Afterall, the holidays were just a thing of the past.  But, guess what?  It was crowded.  Saw a few familiar faces, as well.

dscn0866

In this photo, please meet Cathy on the left and Kari on the right.

dscn0868

Kari introduced herself and talked a little about her professional journey.  I think, everyone that was present sort of knew what they needed to do.  But, just like me, we also needed to learn more and have someone give us that extra push.

dscn0871

When Kari asked what were our favorite “sugar treats” when growing up, I did not speak up.  I did not want to date myself.  I did love Mary Janes, pix at stix (don’t even know how to spell it) and a few others that I want to forget now.

Nicotine is to cigarettes as sugar is to food.  An addiction.  The more you have, the more you want.  I could not believe that there are 15 teaspoons in a 20 ounce bottle of Coke.  Yikes!

The ups and crashes of sugar.  Feeling great and then crashing…start over.

Sugar is an inflammatory food.  They are even relating it to high cholesterol.

Someone said ” I feel like I want a cookie or something at 7 p.m.”  Kari gave ideas on how to prevent those cravings.  A lot has to do with television commercials and other shows.  But, also a lot of times we eat because we are thirsty.  So please drink up your water.

dscn0872

Food changes everything.  The way you feel, your attitude, your skin, and how well you sleep.

If you would like to meet with Kari, please give her a call.  She can help you to improve your eating habits, understand your body better, make your self-care a priority, feel confident in choosing and preparing better food for you and your family and experience an increase in overall happiness in your life.

We all had a great time….I even won a prize.  Almond Butter and Coconut Sugar!!  Will tell you about it on another post since I have not tried them yet.

Thanks for such a nice time to Kari, The Birch Tree Cafe, and Good Earth Market (http://www.goodearthmarket.com).

dscn0877

Talk to you later.

Farm Dinners at Good Earth Market & Organic Farm

I have fallen for farm dinners.  Farms, farmers and chefs team up, producing a meal made with local produce; most of it you will find out is growing on the farm, where you will sit at a table set out on one of their fields for a unique experience.

Menus are often not decided until last minute; not knowing what will be ready for picking on the farm.
