Summer 2021, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Buy Local, Support your Community, Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches

The color on trees and bushes have been unreal. Maybe is all that rain we got in the spring. At the moment no rain. Everyone is watering their gardens. I think I have more weeds than grass. It is what it is. After I finish this post I am weeding. It is cloudy in Rehoboth Beach, but warm which is great.

When I first got these beaches in the mid 70’s at times it was hard to get certain things. Now there is plenty. Friends of mine still think there are not enough good women’s clothing stores here but what the heck there is the internet. And it is all sent to Delaware tax free.

Last weekend it was the last day we were going to cook lamb. A whole leg of lamb, bone in. If you are looking for lamb, Hockers in Ocean View, DE, near Bethany has the best lamb. They get it twice per week. Some people think the taste of lamb is not to their liking. I love it. Well seasoned, lots of garlic, lots of veggies around it. And, plenty of leftovers the next day.

The table. I like to entertain year-round and the virus did not stop me either. You wonder why I am showing you this photo. But, just give me a minute, will you?

The plates were made by Master Potter Sabie Carey. My first plates were made 20 years ago. They are oversized which is what I wanted.

These ones were made this year

Sabieware Pottery is located in Clarksville, about 3 miles or so west of Bethany Beach. I wrote a post right here about her workshop. All you have to do is put on the search Sabieware and you can check it out. You can order from her but she also has some of her things on display and for sale.

On that same table instead of flowers I have the life time candles I found at the Penny Lane in Downtown Rehoboth Beach. The name of the store is called Sea Finds on 42 Rehoboth Ave., Unit 10. I fell in love with them. They are made in Arkansas and Sea Finds is the only place that sells them in the area.

It is an oil burning candle with no odor or smoke. All handmade. Different sizes and varieties. Wicks never need to be replaced. They are perfect for your home or for gifts.

Word of mouth is the best advertisement don’t you think?

So if you are visiting check these local places for your next shopping adventure.

Have a great Sunday.

Sabieware Pottery, Clarksville, Delaware, Sabie Carey, Master Potter, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

To say that 2020 has been quite a year is an understatement. It has impacted so many, even our resort areas who in their second season a lot of the festivities have been canceled, including the Southeastern Delaware Artists Studio Tour right after Thanksgiving. It has been postponed until next year.

One of those artist is Master Potter Sabie Carey. 20 years ago I had commissioned her to make me oversized dinner plates. I still used the plates all the time and I don’t even have to get a salad plate because everything fits just right. My 12 inch plates also fit in my dishwasher.

I contacted Sabie to see if I could stop by her studio. It takes about 20 minutes from Rehoboth Beach. You should call her to make an appointment or just ask when she is going to be there. Next is her business card.

I am always in awe at the beautiful pieces a potter can make out of a lump of clay. Must be so rewarding and so full of accomplishment.

Her studio is small but that is all you need to appreciate her work.

It is that time of the year and even though I use my plates frequently, they really show off during holidays. Sabie has many things in her studio for you to pick and choose from. Following are some of the photos I took the other day.

There is still time to order something for the holidays.

Our talented artists in Southern Delaware make one of a kind pieces. I enjoy so very much every time I get the opportunity to engage in conversation with them. My Sabie plates I love and they are made to be used and enjoyed every single day.

Have a great week and remember that in the hands of a potter the clay becomes magical.

Destination? Jakarta’s, Indonesian Food & Grill, Clarksville, Delaware, Open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is a Food Truck!! Welcome to the Delaware Beaches!!

Annie told Cathy to tell me that I needed to try Jakarta’s….I am going, I am going, I said as I stood at her office in Bethany Beach, Delaware.  Annie then said “I am coming too”.   She is the first one to admit that she has been going several times a week.

dscn0983

Off we went to Jakarta’s, located at 34902 Atlantic Avenue (Rt. 26) in Clarksville.  Tel. 480-745-0561.  Website?  http://www.jakartas.net.  You can find them on Facebook, as well, which is great because you can get up to the minute information on what’s cooking throughout the day.

If you are coming from Bethany Beach, west on Rt. 26, then it will be about 3 1/2 miles.  Once you past the light on the intersection of Rt. 26 or Atlantic Avenue, and Rt. 17, it will be on your left in no time.  Right before Good Earth Market.  Look for the colorful umbrellas.

dscn0989

Very casual, as you can see from my photo.  The tables are comfortable.  Jakarta’s is owned by David and Kiky Olsen.  Kiky cooks her Indonesian specialties.  Check the website to learn more about them.

Indonesian food is very varied with multi cultural influences.  Jakarta is a huge metropolis and a conglomeration of villages known as kampungs.  It is the capital of the Republic of Indonesia.

Indonesia introduced the world spices like nutmeg and cloves used in the global cuisine.  Indonesia also enjoys a tropical climate.  It has plenty of seafood, fresh vegetables and fruits.  Rice is a staple.

Our party at Jakarta’s was getting bigger as The Burkes arrived on the scene.  They are also hooked.  The community is learning about this food truck whose owners are so friendly and are serving delicious Indonesian food, at very reasonable prices and very handsome portions, as well.

dscn0984

A big cooler is on the table, grab your drinks there.

Today, on my first visit I ordered the Javanese Fried Noodles with Beef…they used sliced ribeye.  Spicy for me please.  The soft noodles were pan fried in a special curry paste which had a hint of sweetness and served with pickled veggies.

dscn0985

At Jakarta’s the menu changes without prior notice.  You can check what they will be serving by calling them or by checking the Facebook page.

Annie had a customized dish.  Egg and veggie pancake over rice and sauce.

dscn0987

An order of Chicken Curry served with fried beef, jasmine rice, pickled veggies and salsa, was also requested.

dscn0988

Jakarta’s is planning on staying through September and probably even longer if all of us support their cooking.  They are planning on returning next year…in the Spring.

Check them out….we hardly have food trucks at the Delaware Beaches.  Jakarta’s is worth your trip to Clarksville.

They do parties, and take out, as well.

Have a good one!!    Summer 2014 is flying by.

The Birch Tree Cafe, Clarksville, Delaware, Restaurant, 100% Gluten Free, Espresso Bar, Smoothies, Baked Shoppe, Good Earth Market & Organic Farm, Delaware Eats Gluten Free, Delaware Beaches, Welcome to The Beaches

dscn9698

When my husband, John, was first diagnosed 6 years ago with celiac disease, eating gluten free became a way of life.  It is the only treatment for people with celiac disease and gluten sensitivities.  It is an allergy to wheat and its derivatives.  It does not stop just by not eating gluten, but also, you have to watch out for products that contain gluten and cross-contamination.  Believe me, there are many, including prescription drugs.

Needless to say, we learned quickly and just like anything, you adapt.  He really would have preferred to have had chicken fried steak, sweet breads, or anything traditionally cooked, but all in all he was pretty good about it.  He had to.

In 2008 people would say, how lucky we were because prior to that year, not much was on the market.  Nowadays, I say, how lucky everyone is because restaurants, grocery stores, and gourmet shops have jumped on the band wagon….oh yes, it is definitely a business.  There is still more to do but if you have a gluten allergy, then, Welcome to the Beach!

dscn9697

The Birch Tree Cafe is Delaware’s 100% Gluten Free restaurant.  It is also an espresso bar and a bake shoppe.  It is located in Clarksville, which is about 4 miles west of Bethany Beach on Rt. 26.  The actual address is 31826 Good Earth Lane.  Tel. 302-539-2468.  You can find The Birch Tree Cafe on Facebook and Twitter.

dscn9680

dscn9677

I stopped by to get a few things for a friend in Rehoboth Beach.  Some special treats.  It was late in the day, but Cathy Berzins, Co-Owner, and Chef, was there like always.  She opens every day.  And, this is what I got.

dscn9701

Muffins:  2 cinnamon, 2, blueberry, 2 chocolate chip….my friend has a sweet tooth.  These muffins, besides being gluten free were also dairy free and nut free.

Everything is baked by Cathy from scratch, so I also got Multi Grain with Flax bread; 6 whole grains plus flaxeed.

Could not resist the Pecan Brownies….a classic made also dairy free.

dscn9676dscn9673

Living Gluten Free in Delaware….is all about food.  Every 2nd Tuesday of every month, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. the public is invited to join The Birch Tree Cafe and discuss the Gluten Feree Lifestyle.  Share recipes, stores, and dining advice….we all have something to say about that, cooking/baking how-to’s and product information.  Cathy will also have samplins.  Any questions, pease call 302-539-2468.

The Birch Tree Cafe features its own pizza crust.  To me, that was the hardest thing to achieve.  Cathy also offers quiche, sandwiches, salads and soups.  Her cream of crab soup is her signature dish.  If you have been coming to Bethany Beach, you might remember that Cathy owned South Bethany Seafood Market.  The soup is made with organic cream, organic milk and touched with a finish of sherry.

Her breads and muffins can be ordered in quatities, just give her a call.  Any other dietary restrictions or allergies….she can handle that, as well.

The Birch Tree Cafe sits inside Good Earth Market & Organic Farm, http://www.goodearthmarket.com.  You walk through the market and pick up natural products, groceries, and then step outside to see the actual farm.

dscn9684

dscn9689

Now you know that if you have celiac disease or gluten allergy, even a sensitivity…..the Delaware Beaches have it all.  You don’t have to arrive carrying tons of groceries.  Relax, you are at the Beach!

dscn9687

Have a great day!

dscn6610

The artists in Southeastern Delaware are opening their doors to their studios once again, as they have been doing for 19 years.  This is a free, self-guided tour of the studios of 13 of Delaware’s most talented artists and artisans, all located in Southeastern Sussex County.  You can talk to them, ask questions, see them work, buy some of their pieces of art, but most of all, get to know them personally.

The event takes place on Friday, 11/29 and Saturday, 11/30 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  Remember to buy local and buy tax free in Delaware.  More info?  Please visit http://www.artstudiotour.com.  Open the website and click on the map to see where all the studios are located.

Each artist has donated a piece of art for “Art in the Hat Raffle”.  100% of the proceeds from this raffle will benefit art programs throughout the local community.  Raffle tickets are $4.99 each or 5 for $20.  You can get them at each studio.  To see what each artist has donated, please visit http://www.artstudiotour.com/raffle.htm.

One of my favorite artists is Tom Frey, who is located in Dagsboro.  He is a woodturner.  Mr. Frey uses mostly local woods that are stressed by nature.

His miniatures are beautiful and if you are lucky enough he might be working on some of them as you visit his studio.
