Station on Kings, Lewes, Delaware, Restaurant, Review, Lunch, Dinner, Bakery, Cafe, Garden Store, The Art of Wining and Dining, Southern Delaware

“Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are.” anthelme brillat-savarin

Everyone’s is a food critic these days. I find that the experience comes from eating out often. It is actually very personal. You might love the restaurant and then someone will come back saying; what were you thinking?

The more relaxed you are while eating, the best it will be for you and your dining companion.

Kris Etze and I chose The Station on Kings located at 720 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE 19958. Tel. 302-645-0300. You can reserve tables online and the restaurant has plenty of parking. They are open from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Early morning coffee and baked goods are served. Every day you can enjoy lunch and dinner. Website? http://www.thestationlewes.com

Kris is a well known local personal chef. If you would like to know more about her…..she gives cooking classes too, please check her website http://www.abracadinner.com.

I love to see a beautiful plate full of colorful and well seasoned food. Kris can dissect how perfectly cooked a dish is. A pro at what she does.

The Station on Kings is a one stop shop. Beautifully displays of food, baked goods, home accessories.

Our server was very attentive. We ordered some wine and then jumped into the appetizers.

Have you ever had Blistered Shishito Peppers? Or, even know what they are?

Up close and personal…here is the photo. They are great for snacks. Easy to “blister” too. They are from Japan and sweet. But, caution is in order. 1 in 10 peppers are spicy. Don’t worry, nothing extreme. People that are in the know like Kris, will probably tell you that high heat and quick cooking is what you want. You want them fairly firm but with charred blisters on all sides.

My expert told me they were perfectly cooked. And me, the eating expert, will tell you that they were mild. The dipping sauce of kimchi aioli was also very good.

There is plenty to choose if you are vegetarian or have to eat gluten free.

Kris chose the Vegetarian Risotto. This dish was composed of farro, grilled corn, shaved fennel, house ricotta and chives. It was a nice portion and Kris really commented on how good it was.

I really do love octopus, so every time I see it being offered I order it. You want it to be firm but not dry and chewey and at The Station on Kings it did not disappoint. Perfectly done!! It was served with smoked potatoes, romesco, chorizo jam and salsa verde. Romesco is a tomato-based sauce that originated in Tarragona, Catalonia. The sauce was made by fishermen and should be eaten with fish.

Our choice for a sweet ending was Stone Fruit Frangipane Tart. A frangipane is made with almonds or almond flavoring, butter, sugar and eggs. The combination of cherries and roasted apricots was delicious. Cardamon almonds, brown butter caramel, and rum toffee ice cream. What can I say? Awesome!!

I am looking at these photos and I am salivating. Summer 2019 has brought the local restaurants to bring the best of what they have. Just yummy!!

Check my FB page AboutMyBeaches and comment if you have made it already to The Station on Kings.

Until then, Relax, You are at The Beach.

Say it isn’t so…another season is coming to an end for the Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market.  Tuesday, 10/23, is the last of the 2012 season.  But, not so fast…a Holiday Market; not to be missed, is around the corner.  It will be on Saturday, November 24th from Noon until 3:00 p.m., at Grove Park, behind the Rehoboth Beach Visitor’s Center.

dscn8760

The Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market is a great way to support our local farmers.  Residents and visitors alike have been attending the market on Tuesdays throughout the summer.  Some visitors come in bikes; others drive…and plenty of visitors just walk with shopping bags in hand.  Website?  http://www.rbfarmersmarket.com.

Tuesday promises to be another gorgeous day in Rehoboth Beach.  Just like it was last week.  The white tents will be up again and you will find fall veggies and plenty more!!

dscn8769

Some of the vendors are restaurants and bake shops, as well.

For example.  Meet Yolanda.  She will probably be there tomorrow too.

dscn8772

She is the owner of Mariachi Restaurant, located at 14 Wilmington Ave.  Website? http://www.mariachirehobothde.com.  You can find them on Facebook and Twitter, as well.

dscn5147

dscn5146

Mariachi is known for its Spanish and Mexican cuisine.  Last week Yolanda had Papusas.  These are handmade stuffed corn tortillas, which originated in Salvador but are also well known in Honduras.

dscn8770

She also had veggies and rice and beans and plantains.

dscn8771

I have to tell you that, I think it was at the beginning of the summer when we visited Mariachi.  Upon mentioning that my husband had to eat gluten free, the chef came out to talk to us. He was very knowledgeable and directed us to the right dishes.  We much appreciated this gesture.

Masitas de Puerco – Cuban style morsels of pork marinated in a criolla sauce and roasted Sevilla’s bitter oranges.

dscn5142

A Lomo Saltado – Sauteed strips of prime sirloin with fresh tomatoes, cilantro, red onions and green peppers on a special Peruvian sauce.

dscn5143

I am sure Debbie, from Cake Break, will be there too!!  She is located at 7 South First Street in downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Website? http://www.cakebreakrehoboth.com.  You can find them on Facebook as CakeBreakRehoboth and on Twitter as CakeBreakRB.

dscn8762

Cake Break is a gourmet cupcake company.  Their facility is peanut free.  They also have gluten free and vegan cupcakes.  I was telling Debbie that I love the density of her cupcakes.  I don’t want to bite into air.  They are excellent.

dscn8763

I am sure that she will have an assortment of them, just like she did last week, when I ate 2 of them; The Salty Dawg on the left had yellow cake with caramel frosting.  The Chocolate Overload on the right had chocolate chip cupcake dunked in ganache, filled and topped with chocolate icing and chocolate shavings.

dscn8775

New from Cake Break!  They are shipping gluten free products.

dscn8767

Greenbranch Organic Farm, located in Salisbury, Maryland, had the prettiest radishes.  This farm is already taking orders for Thanksgiving Turkeys.  Their turkeys are raised on their farm where they have access to grass, clover, bugs and sunshine!!  Tel. 443-736-7779.  Website?  http://www.greenbranchfarm.com.

dscn8773

dscn8774

Soooo…if you are in Downtown Rehoboth Beach on Tuesday, remember the market is open from Noon until 3 p.m.  Have a good one!!

Notting Hill Coffee Roastery and Lewes Bake Shoppe, Review, A Coffee & Bake Shoppe, Lewes at the Delaware Beaches

100_0610

Once again, I will have to repeat that some say passion is your key to success and others say that if you love what you do then you will never work a day in your life.

It was late in the afternoon, and you know how pretty it was.  I felt like I wanted a cup of coffee.  Since I was near Lewes I ventured into Notting Hill, which is a coffee roastery.  But it is more than a coffee shoppe, read on…

100_0611

Nobody was in the shoppe when I came in and it was around 4:15 p.m.  They were closing at 5 p.m.

100_0596

In a few of my past posts I have mentioned the winning dispositions of some business owners.  You know from the moment they look at you that they are friendly; a smile says it all.  And, that is just what happened when I met Amy Felker who is the owner and roaster of Notting Hill.  I only met her briefly but that is all it took.

She has been known to say “Most people don’t like what they do, but I love what I do”.  That is her passion!

Notting Hill is located in the center of Lewes, Delaware, right on 124 Second Street.  Tel.  toll free 888-99-Latte or 302-645-0733.  Website is www.nottinghillcoffee.com. E-mail address is amy@nottinghillcoffee.com.

Notting Hill started with a partnership but since 2003 she has been the sole owner and roaster.

100_0607

She roasts herself every single bean.  You know, coffee roasting is a chemical process by which flavor components are either created, balanced, or altered in a way that augments the flavor, acidity, aftertaste and body of the coffee.

100_0598

A lot of Amy’s flavors and all of her blends are owned by her; they are unique and you will not find them anywhere else.

100_0599

So, after Amy roasts her beans then they are bagged.  All bags are stamped by her and her staff.  Notting Hill distributes wholesale, as well.  Amy can make thousands of different beverages at the shop and more than 135 different types of coffee are on the shelf.  She really runs the day to day operation of the shoppe.

Depending on the year, she can sell 25,000-40,000 lbs. of coffee.

Coffee has been enjoyed for hundreds of years.  Business and coffee go hand in hand.  It is a favorite around the world and has been for a long time regardless of how or where it is served.

100_0601

That tiny bean is responsible for the employment of thousands of people.

Notting Hill is a very warm and cozy coffee shop.  But there are so many other delectables sold here.  You should know that just like the coffees, all baked goods and soups and sandwiches are baked or cooked in the shoppe.

100_0604

The shoppe opens at 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.  During the summer season there will be extended hours.

100_0606

Some customers come for specific baked goods like the Blueberry Puffing Muffin, which is like a blueberry muffin inside a pastry.  Just check the picture yourself.

100_0608

Another favorite is the Ooey Gooey which is a long twisted cinnamon pastry with cinnamon and sugar. I did not see one, but I can see it being similar to a Spanish churro, if you have ever had one, except this one is twisted.

You can find cookies, muffins, scones; everything that goes well with coffee.  But, coffee is not the only beverage served here; there are smoothies and blended iced teas, as well.

There is a great assortment for the tea drinker.  Loose teas to be bought to take home or just to be enjoyed sitting in one of the tables inside the shoppe, while you read one of the newspapers available for the customers.

100_0600

On the Board you will find an Espresso Menu, as well as a Menu consisting of the daily offerings.  Another small board will announce the Organic Java of the Day. And a third board will be a Cocoa Menu with all kinds of cocoa drinks, even sugar free ones.

100_0609

The whole time I was there, Linda, who also works at Notting Hill was busy getting ready to close for the day, but customers started to come in and she graciously took care of them.

As I was sitting sipping my coffe I started to remember the Puerto Rican coffee that was always so well known, and all the coffee plantations around the island, now Paradores or Inns.  Some of the coffees from Puerto Rico are Cafe Yaucono, Cafe Crema, Cafe Rico, Cafe Pilon, Yauco Selecto and Cafe Alto Grande.  Puerto Rican coffee is rich and full-bodied.

A few things worth mentioning are: Some of the coffees available at Notting Hill are bird friendly, Smithsonian certified and Rainforest Alliance certified.

100_0613

You should really visit the website above mentioned.  You can place orders, check what they have besides coffee and most of all get a sense of what Amy is all about.

If you are visiting our Delaware Beaches check this shoppe out.  Their new omelette in a muffin will be making its debut soon.

As Notting Hill gets into the month of April they are so excited since April 30th will be their 20th anniversary.  Congratulations!!

That’s all for tonight…See you and talk to you later….
