What’s Going On?
Friday, 4/18 – LEWES – THE 46th ANNUAL GREAT DELAWARE KITE FESTIVAL – Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes – Registration will be at 9:30 a.m. and the competitions will begin at 10:30 a.m. I should be warmer by then. No entry fee for competitors. Three age categories. No charge to watch, but enrance fees willl apply when entering the Park which will be collected at the entrance. $4/car for Delaware license cars and $8/car for out of state tags. The Jolly Trolley will transport spectators at not cost to the competition field from the state park’s beach parking lot. Handicap parking is available at the Seaside Nature Center parking lot. Don’t have a kite but want to participate? Kids’ Ketch and Rehoboth Toy & Kite Company will be on site selling a wide variety of kites. You can practice ahead of the competition at 10 a.m. There will food vendors, a face painter, and community organizations. More info? Tel. 302-856-1544. 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Various age categories with up to 12 years old. Over 7,000 candy filled eggs will be hidden n the Museum grounds. In addition to the free egg hunts, for $3 kids can enjoy unlimited bounces on the moon bounce, the clown magician, train rides on Georgetown’s Lil Toot, and face painting. You better believe it when I say they speak Spanish. Arriving at Papa Grande’s…I stepped inside and this is what I saw…pork tacos coming out. First impression? Huele bueno! It means smells good! It was like coming into a home and you can smell the food cooking. Yum. So, I said: Que tal como estan? A look and then: Hablas Espanol muy bien. Pues claro. Adriana introduced herself. From Veracruz. When you visit Papa Grande’s ask for her. She was friendly, and knew her menu well. I mention this now instead of later in the post because she was that good of a server.
Papa Grande’s opened in Fenwick Island, Delaware, last year. The location is 38929 Madison Avenue. It is only a mile and a half or so from Coastal Highway on Rt. 54. Tel. 302-436-7272. Website? http://www.papagrandes.com. This restaurant is the 7th restaurant opened by restauranteur and philanthropist, Matt Haley. Matt Haley is the recipient of the James Beard 2014 Humanitarian Award!! Papa Grande’s sits right behind a sister restaurant called Catch 54. But, wait, coming in May, Papa Grande’s arrives in Dowtown Rehoboth Beach. It is the first time one of Matt Haley’s restaurant is being duplicated. All his restaurants are different. But, one thing that is consistent…all use fresh ingredients and the best Southern Delaware has to offer. The food is simple; not fussy. What you see is what you get. That’s what we, customers want.
We were having a late lunch….almost close to their happy hour which begins at 3 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m. They open Sunday – Thursday from 11:30 to 9:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. It was that in between time, when it was not crowded and we could relax and take in the views.
On the first floor, there is plenty of sitting, booths or individual tables. This dining area is quiet. The bar is upstairs.
 
Upstairs, the bar takes center stage with tables and booths also around the bar. The deck is the most sought after spot. Plenty of scenic views.
I don’t know what it is with me…the moment I saw the menu, I knew what I was going to have. I see scrapple and I have to have it. So, I did, but first I had their Shredded Brussels Sprouts. I am also hooked on this dish. At Lupo di Mare in Rehoboth Beach, another of Matt Haley Companies, they are amazing. I wanted to taste these ones, as well. They were so different that I can’t tell you which I like better. The Papa Grande’s brussels sprouts have a roasted corn vinaigrette, red onion, pepita, and cotija. Pepita is pumpkin seed, and cotija is a hard, crumbly white cheese made from cow’s milk; more pungent than queso blanco. I thought the brussels sprouts were very refreshing and both Cindi and I agreed that it will be a great summer starter.
Ordering my Scrapple Apple Tacos….they came just like I ordered them….well done, meaning crispy. A side order of rice. The combination was great. I just don’t know why I have not thought about this myself in my own home. If you like scrapple, then order them!
Cindi’s soup was a Mexican Crab Crema Soup. It was on the special that day and she thought it was rich, creamy with the right amount of heat. It is still chilly at the Delaware Beaches, so it was perfect.
We did not have dessert even though they were offered. Another time, perhaps. Cindi and I just sat there…it was almost time for happy hour. The customers were arriving. We just chatted away.
So, please remember….Papa Grande’s is coming to Downtown Rehoboth Beach!! Nos Vemos y Buen Provecho!

My friend, Jody, invited me to go to Independence for a Fund for Women Fashion Show and fundraising event. Did not know where Independence was and did not know about Fund for Women. Arriving at Independence on a beautiful Sunday, last week-end, I was so surprised to find this 55+ community tucked away on Rt. 5 near Millsboro. Independence Hall Club House is located at 29762 Oliver Wolcott Dr., Millsboro, DE 19966. And, what a beautiful club it was.
As it usually happens, when women get together with a purpose, then something does get done. It happened that way when in 1993 16 women who became First Founders vowed to recruit 1,000 Founders, each contributing $1,000 to fund a $1 million endowment to be held at the Delaware Community Foundation. The goal was reached and now more than 1,300 women and men have become Founders. Since 12/31/13 the endowment has surpassed $3.1 million.
 
When you donate $1,000 to this organization, you pledge to pay $200 for 5 years. So, you don’t have to pay it all at once. The Founders love to hear the bell ring every time a new Founder has joined.

We arrived with enough time to take part in the raffle, and get a few bites to eat.

The Runway was ready, but before the Fashion Show, there was some shopping to be done. The shops in the Fashion Show also had their tables around the room where we could do some shopping at great prices.
Introductions were made and Cheryl Mitchell from Lunch with a Purpose was the Moderator.
Through the course of the Fashion Show we learned more and more about Fund for Women. It is managed by a Board of Trustees made of women from all three counties of Delaware.
Their beliefs: “All women and girls have intrinsic value. We believe in giving back. We accomplish more collectively than as individuals. We believe in the responsibility of women’s philanthropy.”
With that in mind, the music started, the women, were dancing on their seats, and the models were great. It was so much fun with a lot of impromptu “runway acting”. The ladies modeled clothing from Azura, Candlelight Bridal, CraZy LadyZ, Deanna’s, Josephine’s Daughter, Coolspring Cottage, Lady Fenwick, Twila Farrell, and Simply Dressed.
 
 
 
The afternoon ended with the special occasion dresses from Candlelight Bridal in Millsboro.
Note: The next event will be Art from My Collection to Yours on May 1st at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, in Wilmington, Delaware. The Fund for Women and Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts will be partnering for an art auction event. FFW Founders and local community members are invited to donate, from their own collections, works of art such as framed paintings, sculpture, ceramics, hand-made jewely, and more. It was 1979 when the Rusty Rudder opened its doors. It was the place to go and be seen. Open air decks, plenty of music, food, and drinks….the summers came and went and the Rusty Rudder then became an institution. Guess what? It still is. The setting is beautiful.
Rusty Rudder is located at 113 Dickinson Street and the Bay. The Atlantic Ocean is on one side and the Bay is on the other, making Dewey Beach a playground for adults day and night and the best of both worlds for the young ones. Arrive by car and you will find plenty of parking available; otherwise come by boat and there are plenty of slips, as well.
Rusty Rudder was opening on Saturday, 4/12, and what a gorgeous day this coastal town had. Plenty of shorts and flip-flops, local attire found in Dewey. The opening of Rusty Rudder brought numerous customers, including Shelley, Mrs. Levinson and myself. There was a Chili Cookoff and we were ready to try and vote for the best.
Surrounding the Rusty Rudder’s deck we found restaurants and individuals that were set up with their prize chili. The conversations heard were, tasty, spicy, ground beef vs. steak chili….You went around sampling all of them. By the time you were finished, a bowl of chili was probably devoured.
Lisa Abel’s Chili was very good. A traditional taste full of flavor…she was the winner.
One of my favorites was prepared by Jimmy’s Grille. It was a white chicken chili. It really was good with just the right seasonings.
Ivy had a pretty good one too. Those I have mentioned were my top picks, but to be honest, I did not try them all.
Big Hat No Cattle was starting to play….entertainment for everyone. They got the crowds going and some of us were able to dance the chili off.

TGIF, that’s for sure and what a gorgeous day it is in the Delmarva Peninsula. Over the years, Lewes has been holding their Tulip Festival around this week-end. So many events are planned for the visitors that migrate to our beaches during the Spring to view these beautiful flowers. I think the tulips might not be blooming yet….you know it has been a hard winter. Nevertheless, enjoy the many activities this Friday has to offer in this historic town.

The window caught our attention as Jody and I strolled the Avenue…we were in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. This store is quite big and it is full of fun stuff for the whole family.

There is no place like Dewey Beach during the summer at the Delaware Beaches. It is a playground for both, the young, and the more matured…..having the Atlantic Ocean on one side of the road and the Bay on the other is “fun land”.
The town is very small and very casual. Plenty of restaurants, bars, and entertainment once the summer season starts. So, what’s going on?
It seems that this coming week-end is the official opening of Dewey Beach. If you are visiting us at the Delaware Beaches we hope you have an amazing time. Shop local, eat local….stay awhile!

This event started in 2005 as a fundraiser for the Food and Friends organization. It was a way to honor a young man who died from AIDS. He was a teacher, a counselor and a dog lover. Saturday, April 26th – DEWEY BEACH BACON FEST – I really don’t know why the do this to us. It is a rollercoaster. Fat, a little fat, lots of fat….anyway if you can’t fight them join them. Who doesn’t like bacon? It is in every restaurant I have been lately. The new “it” food.
