Shorebreak, Casual Men’s Clothing, Historic Lewes, Delaware, Polos, Sportshirts, Hats, Sunglasses, Gifts, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn1009

I remember it well.  It was last Sunday when the temperatures were in the 50s.  Historic Lewes is pretty year round.  But, on that day it was just amazing.  People were outside, enjoying what visitors come here for; blue skies, the quaint towns, our beaches, our shops and our restaurants.

dscn0975

I decided to visit Josh.  He is the owner of Shorebreak, located at 115 Savannah Rd., Lewes, Delaware.  Tel. 302-6450-8488.  Website?  http://www.shopshorebreak.com. I visited him when he first started the store and now, after a couple of years in business, he has found success in his hometown.  Yes, he is a local guy!!

dscn1035

There are not that many men shops in our area, so it is great to showcase the ones that offer that casual type of clothing that go hand in hand with our relaxed way of living at the beach.

dscn1019

Shorebreak opens Thursday through Monday; 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.  During the summer season, they are open every day.

dscn1020dscn1023

You will find lots of easy comfortable fabrics, clothes with a light and relaxed feel.

dscn1027

At the present time, you will also find a few sales going on.  Is that time of the year.

dscn1013

Some of the brands that you will find at Shorebreak are Southern Tide (polos and sportshirts), Kuhala (Hawaiian type shirts), Matix, Cutter & Buck, Costa del Mar (sunglasses), Sanuk & Reef (footwear) and Woolrich.

dscn1026

dscn1022dscn1014

Shorebreak carries a line of apparel by another local guy, Corey  Schab.  It is call L Town, which is short for the town of Lewes, DE.  Their products are eco friendly.  The line “symbolizes the relaxed and “chill” life of growing up in a small coastal community”.

dscn1032

Not only does the shop offer clothing but they do also have gifts.

dscn1018

dscn1015

‘Hands of Harvest’, Documentary Film, Executive Producer, Matt Haley, SoDel Films, Written & Produced by Adrian Muys, Delaware, Maryland, Eastern Shore Congratulations!! ‘Hands of Harvest’ Picked up by the PBS Network

dscn1042

Congratulations to restauranteur, Matt Haley and Adrian Muys!!  I remember when in March of 2010 I invited my friend, Debbie, to visit the Art Deco Milton Theater in Milton, Delaware.

100_0653

A sneak preview of a documentary, Hands of Harvest.  At the time, that presentation was co-sponsored by the Rehoboth Film Society and the Milton Historical Society.  It was part of the series called Delmarva Roots.  These series featured the rich history of the Delmarva region.

dscn1044

It is a documentary that offers a glimpse into a renowned American Industry, being kept afloat by foreign labor.  It illustrates the struggles and fortitude of the migrant Mexican women who fuel the crabbing industry on the Eastern Shore.  As one of Maryland’s most viable economic resources, a s well as a cultural icon, the blue crab business takes center stage, delving into the history and strife of the watermen who fight to keep the livelihood intact.

The 56 minute film, originally, appeared on PBS back in July of 2010.  It has since then made a revival, catching the eye of the National Education Telecommunications Association, or NETA, as they’re more commonly known, who has aired and distributed the documentary through the national PBS network.

Since then, ‘Hands of Harvest’ has aired in Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Phoenix, Portland, San Diego, and New York City.  It will be airing in cities throughout the U.S. for at least another year.  The film has also been screened at Salisbury University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland, Washington College, and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.

Adrian Muys says he is “thrilled” with the film’s recent praise, adding that he is proud that the production has brought further attention to the H-2B visa program as part of the Immigration and Nationality Act established in 1980.  This focus has, in turn, brought about discussions on the topic of keeping workers, such as those portrayed in the film, working in the Delmarva region.

“As a restauranteur, I use a lot of Hispanic workers, and I care about the conditions that they live and work in and how they are treated in the community”, explains Matt Haley.  “The blue crab industry is of interest to people all across the Delmarva Peninsula and the Eastern Shore–it’s an institution.  Many don’t realize how dependent the struggling industry is on Hispanic workers and what their life is like here.”

Since ‘Hands of Harvest’, Matt Haley has produced a second film, “Motorcycle Chang Pa”, which chronicles the lives and travels of the nomadic Chang Pa tribe through the high altitude deserts of the Himalayas.  Matt’s new production company, SoDel Films, is in the process of creating an independent film in Delaware with actor and filmmaker, Paul Webster.

For further information on ‘Hands of Harvest’, please visit http://www.handsofharvest.com.

For more information on Matt Haley, please visit http://www.matthaleycompanies.com.

I think you are really going to enjoy this documentary.  It is so interesting, especially for those of us that live on the Delmarva Peninsula.  I have bought it and given it to friends as a special gift.

Talk to you later….

Coffee House, Bake Shoppe, Fresh Baked Breads and Sweets, Soups, Salads, Sandwiches, Quiches, The Point Coffee House & Bake Shoppe, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches

dscn0974

Coffee; that’s all Susan and I were meeting for.  Well, fat chance.  No way, if you are visiting The Point in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  Location 722 Rehoboth Avenue Extended.  It is, really where Rt. 1 meets 1A.  Tel. 302-260-9734.

Just checking the board to see what could I eat that would be less caloric, shall we say.  At first I thought the quiche would be good.  They usually offer two quiches.

dscn0963

Tom, the Manager, suggested the yogurt with granola and fruit.  I had it before and it was the perfect size.

Susan already had in mind what they call the “puffin”.

We put our orders, got some coffee and I continued to check some of their homemade breads. The spinach pesto pinenut loaf looked so good.

dscn0965

The roasted pepper and tomato focaccia looked amazing.

dscn0964

I noticed that now you can have a sample of their breads and vinegars; oils and peppers are also offered.

dscn0970

dscn0972

Oh, my Lord, my yogurt bowl was pretty big.  Full of healthy fruits, yogurt and granola.

dscn0969

Susan’s puffin arrived.

dscn0966

We just started laughing.  The whole time we were sharing our coffee and breakfast, we were talking about who lost what weight and “we really know what we should eat”, we need to get on the ball……

Oh wait a minute….I forgot the pies!  They have delicious pies.  You can take them home or place an order for another time.

dscn0973

Sun’s out…that’s even better!!

dscn0947

Blogs are considered diaries in many respects.  With that in mind, I took my “rescued” Heinz 57, Addy, for a much needed day of grooming.  I have posted plenty of times about Doggies At the Beach, located at on Rt. 24 at the Family Dollar Plaza, off of Rt. 1 (Coastal Highway).  Tel. 302-644-8200.  Website?  http://www.doggiesatthebeach.com.

Doggies At the Beach is the premier dog boarding facility in Rehoboth Beach.  Climate control, playing time and plenty of attention for that pooch in your life.  This is the only place I have left Addy.  The dogs have a great time.  I had to laugh because when I took these pictures, the Bassett Hound, would not get up.  He just wagged his tail.  Finally, he came out, hoping no other dog would take his spot.

dscn0954

The new grooming facility is so nice.  It is not just for dogs; cats are also able to come for some grooming, as well.  Bright colors!!  That’s where I met Teri.  She is letting the public know what’s going on at Doggies At The Beach.  Nice chatting with you Teri.  And, thanks for the tour.

dscn0940

The actual groom room is also full of pinks and purples.  There is even a ramp for easy climbing for larger dogs.

dscn0942

On Saturday, January 19th from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m there will be a Discount Vaccination Day.  Doggies At The Beach holds monthly vaccination clinics.  The difference, this time, is that it will 100% benefit the Georgetown SPCA.  Vaccinations are administered by a licensed Vet.  It will be held at Doggies At The Beach located at 18806 John J. Williams Highway (Rt. 24 for both dogs and kitties.  Please have your kitties in a crate.  First come; first serve.

dscn0956

New training classes by their new training partner; a certified professional trainer.  Puppy Preschool, Puppy Kindergarten, Good Manners 101.  You need to register and pay to hold a spot.  The class size is restricted to 5 only, so your intense training will be a great value.  More info?  Please call 302-644-8200.

dscn0959

The 2013 Week-End Festival of the Lewes Polar Bear Plunge, which takes place on February 1 through the 3rd will bring new Plungers into the scene.  It is the first time the festival will be holding the Pooch Plunge on February 2nd from 11 a.m. until Noon, starting on the Boardwalk at Rehoboth Avenue.  All for Special Olympics Delaware!!  Doggies At The Beach is participating in this event!!

dscn0961

I brought Addy home, she got comfortable in her new Doggie Lounger.  If you have not met her, here she is.

Saketumi, Restaurant, Rehoboth Beach, Modern Asian Cuisine, Sushi Bar, Lounge…Fresh Wasabi!!, Delaware Beaches

dscn0938

My 3 favorites were at Saketumi.  And, I don’t mean food.  That too, though.  But, I am talking about Sous Chef Tanaka San, Saketumi’s Manager, Kim, and James, our server that is so professional.  My visit to Saketumi on Wednesday was the first of 2013.  Saketumi is in a very accessible location in Rehoboth Beach.  Right on Coastal Highway, with plenty of parking.  At this time of the year, that might not mean much, but wait until the summer and you’ll be a happy camper.

Address is 18814 Highway One (Coastal Highway), Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. 302-645-2818.  Find them on Facebook!!

We sat at our favorite spot…the sushi bar; my favorite seat was available.  Right in front of Tanaka.  He immediately brought us his own specialty.  He has not give it a name.  I ask every time; what is it?  Yesterday he said, fish, with cucumber, rice vinegar, Mirin…just a delicious great way to start our evening.

dscn0931

A few drinks were ordered.  Then, an order of Torched Tuna Appetizer.  The tuna was served in a carpaccio style, with jalapenos, red tobiko, chives, masago crackers and spicy ponzu sauce.  Love this dish, light and tasty.

dscn0934

Do you see the wasabi next to that appetizer?  It is fresh wasabi.  It is a new sensation for your palate.  Freshly grated.  Not all Asian restaurants have it, but, they should.   Well, wasabi is difficult to cultivate, therefore, more expensive.  A serving in a restaurant is about $2.  The best way to experience it, is to just put it straight on your food.  It is delicate, spicy and completely different from the wasabi everyone seems to know. That common substitute is a mixture of horseradish, mustard, starch and green food coloring.  James, my favorite server, told me that Saketumi is offering to its customers all the time.

Tanaka is such an artist.  His presentations are a work of art.  When you sit at the sushi bar you can watch him work.

Our next dish was just as nice with a Cucumber Roll, Sake Salmon, and Unagi Eel…..need Gluten Free Soy Sauce?  They do have it!!

dscn0935

I was not finished yet….an order of Lettuce Wrap & Roll….I am addictive to this dish, more so even now that James suggested I try it with Sriracha sauce to give it that extra punch.  It really was very good.  Sriracha sauce is made from ripen chilies; ground to a paste with garlic.

dscn0937

That was it!! Perfectly satisfied with no room for dessert.

Saketumi has a Wednesday special with Bento Boxes at great prices.  They open 7 days a week and Sunday Brunch is from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Talk to you later….

Good Morning Delmarva, Juicing, Popovers, Gluten Free, It’s Sunday!!

dscn0909

I am trying to stay ahead of the flu.  Believe me, I have been overexposed.  Some have it in my household…I got the flu shot, vitamins, and tons of liquids since I decided to start juicing.  Getting those nutrients directly from fruits and vegetables.  I hope it works.

I shopped for the juicer at some of our stores in Rehoboth Beach.  I decided on Jack LaLanne’s Power Juicer.  First of all it is a proven juicer.  Secondly, the price was $99.  There were some that were $49 but I did not know how they would hold.  And, then, there were the ones that were $200 and up.  I am a novice at this. The third attraction to this juicer was easy clean-up.

dscn0926

Juicing is expensive, no two ways about it.  I usually buy fresh but when you are juicing you need to buy in larger quantities.  I have beets, turnips, celery, oranges, melons, greens…I got avocados and bananas.  Please note that the juicer is strictly a juicer.  No smoothies; avocados and bananas do not have liquid, therefore blend those in a blender or food processor and then add to the already made juice.

I love Gala apples so this was one of my first juices.

dscn0912

Freshly squeeze orange juice is always a treat.  Juiced with the rind so as to absorb all vitamins.

dscn0923

Look at the color of the celery juice.  Celery is full of vitamins and low in fat.  It is also a natural diuretic.  Something new I learned is that some people are allergic to celery.  In Europe they disclose if products contain celery.

dscn0929

I decided to make popovers.  I have not been too successful at them.  It could be the gluten free flour used.  I am getting better.  I want them to be light but they still come out more muffin-like.  They were delicious, don’t get me wrong. I used the pulp collected in the pulp collector to give my popovers added flavor.

Before I post the recipe, let me tell you that I used an interesting gluten free flour.  Mama’s Almond Blend.  It has white rice flour, tapioca flour, potato starch, sweet rice flour and almond meal flour.  It is a light flour; non gritty.  To learn more visit http://www.glutenfreemama.com.

dscn0917

I also used a 100% Coconut sugar.  It is, apparently, the “in” sugar to use.  I, actually, won it at Good Earth Market & Organic Farm, located in Clarksville, Delaware.  http://www.goodearthmarket.com.  It is organically grown and more nutritious.  It smells like coconut, but it does not taste like it.  The taste is more like raw sugar with a hint of caramel.  Diabetics, please listen, because coconut sugar ha a low glycemic index, it is better for you.

dscn0914

Orange Popovers

3 eggs (room temperature)

1 tablespoon sugar

1 1/4 milk

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 1/4 cups gluten free flour (if not Celiac or without gluten sensitivity, use regular flour)

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons of orange zest or pulp

Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees.

In a large bowl whisk the eggs with sugar and zest.

Whisk in milk and 3 tablespoons of melted butter.

In another bowl whisk the flour with the baking powder and salt.

Whisk the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until small lumps only remain.

Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter and brush the inside of the popover or deep muffin pan.

Place the empty pan in the oven for about 10 minutes.  Don’t worry if the butter starts browning.

Take it out and then, carefully, fill them half way.  You can sprinkle some of the rind or pulp on top just before putting them in the oven.

dscn0918

Bake for about 40 minutes.

dscn0919

Nice and hot, ready to eat.

dscn0922

Great with honey.  I added to my raw honey some freshly squeeze orange juice and rind.  The Country Harvest raw honey came from Manchester, Maryland.  Dip or spread.

dscn0927dscn0928

Enjoy!!

What’s Going On? Denver, Colorado, Cheering the Ravens?, Denver Convention Center, Denver Art Museum, Looking for Latin Food?, Cuba Cuba Cafe & Bar

dscn6875

Visiting Denver at the end of the summer was great.  The weather was perfect and the City was so clean and accessible.

18 degrees in Denver?  I think I like it like that….for the Ravens!!  So, regardless of the outcome, if you are in Denver this week-end, a few places I have visited and thought you might be interested are:

Denver Convention Center – If you are visiting from the East Coast, you know how much we like boats, the water and all those water sports.  Well, the Premier Boat show in the Rocky Mountain Region is at the Denver Convention Center until Sunday 1/13.  The Convention Center was opened in 1990 and it is within walking distance to hotels, art museums, shops and restaurants.

dscn6872dscn6873

It is so easy to find, located at 700 14th St.   But, if you see the Big Blue Bear, then, you know you have reached your destination.  This Big Blue Bear is peering inside the Denver Convention Center; almost like wanting to see what’s going on.  It is 40 feet tall….”I See What You Mean”…More info?  Please visit http://www.denverconventioncenter.com.

dscn6866

Denver Art Museum – The Museum is also in Downtown Denver, located at 100 W 14th St.   It is a very friendly museum.  There are so many exhibits taking place at the present time….and some very exciting ones coming up.
