GreenMan Juice Bar & Bistro, Rehoboth Beach, Organic, Gourmet, Open Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Delaware Beaches

dscn0568

For the health conscious…this time of the year is particularly important…right?  Jody decided to pick GreenMan as our place for breakfast on Friday.  Getting together before the holidays with some of my friends is a way to kick back and relax.

GreenMan is perfect for a late breakfast or early lunch.  It opens Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  It is located at 12 Wilmington Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  It is in one of those very quaint Rehoboth cottages that define this charming coastal resort.  Tel. 302-227-4909.  On Facebook too!!

IMG_0596

Too cold in December to sit outside, the inside is small and comfy.  GreenMan has an extensive menu…drinks, coffees, plus delicious homemade food…it is an organic, gourmet type of place.

They had two quiches on the menu, freshly made.  Jody chose the one with Fontina.  They are known for their quiches.  You can even place an order to go.  Perfect for company.

dscn0570

I was in the mood for a capuccino, which was served on a large round coffee cup full of foam.

dscn0569

Then, the salmon is was I wanted.  It hit the spot…the bread was toasted and it was perfect.

dscn0573

One of these days I will have their French toast….it is decadent and sinful.  Maybe in 2013!!

Have a great day!!

Jeffrey Auxer Designs, Berlin, Gallery, Studio, Blown Glass, Fine Art, Classes, Parties, Maryland, Worcester County

dscn0540

Up and down the Delmarva Peninsula historic towns are being preserved by residents and merchants.  The Historic Town of Berlin is one example.  On any given day, this town, which by the way, looks like a movie set, is bustling with visitors.  If it is not one thing is another….but, they always have a concert, a festival, merchants’ stroll, you name it.  The shopkeepers are young and interesting, new restaurants have opened this summer; making Historic Berlin a shopping and dining destination.

From Rehoboth Beach and other Delaware Beaches, it takes about 45 minutes.  If you live on the Delaware and Maryland coast, then you are probably used to driving.  I really don’t mind it one bit.  A road trip?  I look forward to it!!

My friend, Susan, and I stopped at Jeffrey Auxer Designs.  The building is unique and it dates back to 1897.  It is located at 19 Jefferson St. in Berlin, Maryland.  It is behind the Atlantic Hotel, which is located on Main Street.  Can’t miss it.  It is the center of the town.  Jeffrey Auxer Designs closes on Monday, but it is open the rest of the week.  At this time of the year it was the perfect place to pick up a few Christmas presents.  His Tel. is 443-513-4210.  His website?  http://www.jeffreyauxer.com.

dscn0073

The ring holders were so cute.  Jeffrey also makes rings and earrings.

dscn0536

The art of blown glass.  The deep colors of the glass.  The amazing shapes.  All this you will find at Jeffrey’s shop.  A person who blows glass is called a glassblower, a glassmith, or a gaffer.

dscn0533dscn0538

Jeffrey offers classes, either individually or in a group setting.  You can also bring your party to the studio.  He has room for 8; kids or adults.  You can find more info. if you visit the above mentioned website.

dscn0537

I bought one of the ornaments and I also bought a couple of bowls.

dscn0076

The studio is so colorful and Jeffrey is very friendly and easy to talk to.

dscn0081

Berlin is beautiful this time of the year.  This is, definitely, a must stop shop while visiting this Historic Town.

dscn0534dscn0083

Note:  Jeffrey also exhibits at Gallery One, located at 32 Atlantic Avenue in Ocean View, Delaware.  It is a few miles west of Bethany Beach.

Talk to you later…

Touring & Tasting, Dogfish Head, The Brewery, Milton, Delaware..Gluten Free Dogfish Head Beer? Tweason ‘ale!!

dscn0255

Last Wednesday was the perfect day for my first tour and tasting at Dogfish Head, located in Milton, Delaware.  I have, previously, reviewed their restaurant located in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  On this particular day, we were ready to learn a thing or two about this company.  I say we because my cousin was visiting.  Arturo is a beer connoisseur and have been wanting to check Dogfish out.

dscn0251

I had reserved 2 spots for the tour.  You can do that on their website, http://www.dogfish.com.  They only take up to 12 people at a time.  That’s why at this time of the year, in the middle of the week, was just the day to do this.  In the summer, you have to plan a little bit more.

dscn0256

Dogfish Head is located at 6 Cannery Village Center, Milton, DE 19968.  Tels. 302-684-1000, 1-888-8Dogfish.  There is a lot of construction going on at this time of the year.  The expansion is taking place.  The company started in 1995.

The first thing that caught my eye was a sculpture.  It seemed that it did not belong there.  The Dogfish slogan “Off-centered ales for off-centered people”.  I thought, oh well.  It was not until later that I found out what the sculpture was.

dscn0250

It is called the Steampunk Tree House.  It first appeared at the Burning Man event in Black Rock City, Nevada in 2007.  The artist was Sean Orlando from Oakland, CA.  Find out how it got to Milton, Delaware by visiting http://www.dogfish.com/company/tangents/steampunk-treehouse.htm.

John was our tour guide.  You can see him there on the right behind the counter.  I cannot say enough about him.  He was so knowledgeable.  Explained everything with ease and in a casual and relaxed way.  At the end of the tour, when he asked us if there were any other questions.  There were non, really….he was that thorough.  You can request to have him as your tour guide.

dscn0254

Brewing that day were the 60 Minute IPA and Indian Brown Ale.  The Indian Brown Ale was going to be our second tasting.  We were given 4 sharks.  One for each tasting.  They were our tokens.

dscn0258

By Delaware law only 4 samples of beer each day.  Those 4 samples will equal 1 beer.  You are not to share your beer.  If you don’t want to finish it, just throw it away.

Dogfish Head also has been making, since 1995, a Birch Beer Soda.  It is made with brown sugar and vanilla beans.

dscn0259

The first beer we tried was a Birra Etrusca, Ancient Ale. This was a new release.  It had specialty ingredients like hazelnut flour, pomegranates, Italian chestnut honey, Delaware wildflower honey and clover honey.  They said it is comparable to a Malbec.

On this corner John showed us how Dogfish Head started.  It was so funny because I thought the name Dogfish Head came from Sam Calagione just making it up.  But Dogfish Head is located in Maine.  That is where he came from.  Made sense.

dscn0265

dscn0262

As you can see, our group was ready for our second tasting. We were about to taste the Indian Brown Ale.  This is a cross between a Scotch ale, an IPA and an American Brown.  A definite malty taste.

dscn0260

dscn0261

Dogfish Head beer has the highest amount of alcohol than any other beer in the U.S.  You can also find them in 24 states.

We all grabbed protective eye gear and off we entered the brewery.  Stainless steel, pipes, workers busy packaging, inspecting, etc. etc.

dscn0271

dscn0274

dscn0275

dscn0283

dscn0278

dscn0279

We passed an area called “Sam’s Stash”.  A sample of all beers that have been developed.

dscn0276

Back to where we started to our 3rd tasting; Olde School Barley Wine.  An ale.  Flavors of figs and dates that help ferment it.  Very nice with an alcohol content of 15%.

Our last tasting was very interesting; like a stout.  It was the Palo Santo Marron.  It is a brown ale.  It ages in a 10,000 gallon, handmade wooden tank, picking up caramel and vanilla complexities.

dscn0293dscn0287

Their gluten free beer is called Tweason ‘ale.  They describe it as “gluten free with gusto”.  It is sorghum based, brewed with strawberries and buckwheat honey.

dscn0295

There is nothing like the branding of a name.  T-shirts, hats, sweatshirts, beach chairs, souvenirs….you name it.  I even saw soap made with beer at the Rehoboth Beach location.

dscn0264

dscn0296

This tour is so worth it.  31 miles from Rehoboth Beach.  Of course, we bought beer!!

dscn0291

Have a good one!!  Merry Merry!!

Purr-fectly Thrifty, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Thrift Shop, Caring Actions for Animals, Inc., Resale Shop, Delaware Beaches, Henry & Francesca, 2 adoptable cats

Someone that is thrifty is wisely economical, sparing, or frugal. The items you might not need or want can be treasures to others.

dscn0387dscn0407

I kept seeing the sign that said Purr-fectly Thrifty.  I knew it had to be a second hand shop, but to tell you the truth I did not have any idea until I decided to clean my closet the other day.  I had 3 large bags and even though I have taken items to other second hand shops around Rehoboth Beach, the opportunity to check this one out could not be resisted.

dscn0417

Purr-fectly Thrifty is located at 19753 Sea Air Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. 302-727-5774.  The Proprietor?  Rose Karaka  It is right behind the PNC Bank, and adjacent to Outlet Liquors.

The sales proceeds from Purr-fectly Thrifty benefit Caring Actions for Animals, Inc. (CAFA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.

dscn0410dscn0399

Their mission is to support animal welfare initiatives that will improve the quality of life for many animals in Delaware.  They love cats.  They sponsor cat adoption fairs and they work with the Georgetown SPCA.

Rose was telling me that the most important thing is educating the community on the benefits to spay or neuter their pets.  This corporation provides cat food for feral cat feeding stations where required.  They also provide assistance to those that due to financial restraints or physical limitations, cannot provide their pets the necessary food or medical attention.

First impressions?  Did not look like a second hand shop.  The bright colors took me back.  Even the display cases were colorful.

dscn0386

There is merchandise for everyone.

Home goods….lamps, vases, art, toasters, sheets, towels.

dscn0396dscn0397

dscn0411

Christmas items!!

dscn0389

Men’s clothing.

dscn0403

Women’s clothing, shoes and bags.

dscn0408

dscn0409

Children’s clothing and toys.

dscn0405dscn0414

When I saw it, immediately I thought of a Kitty Condo.  Meet Henry and Francesca.  They live at Purr-fectly Thrifty for now….  They are available for adoption.  These are special needs cats.  Here is their story.

dscn0383

dscn0385

Their names are, Henry, the bigger one and Francesca.  They are looking for a new home.  Of course, together would be best, but it will be fine, if not possible. They are about 4 or 5 years old.  Up to date in all shots.

They are special needs kitties because they are carriers of FIV (feline infectious virus), which a contagious disease that only affects cats.  That means they need to be placed in a home without other cats, because the virus could be passed along to other cats if scratched or bitten.  This virus cannot be passed to people or other dogs or pets in your home.

They are both very lovable and so cute.  If you have any questions or are interested please call Rose at 302-727-5774.

Caring Actions For Animals, Inc (CAFA) needs contributions to continue their mission.  Items to donate can be dropped off at the thrift shop during business hours.  Monetary contributions can be made payable to Caring Actions For Animals, Inc. and mailed to:  179 Rehoboth Avenue, Box 188, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971-9998.

So, keep them in mind when cleaning your house of treasures no longer needed.

Fried Fish Batter, Easy, Light, Crispy, Gluten Free!! A Winner!!

I was trying to come up with a heading that would be a little bit more attractive.  The word “fried” turns some people off.  Too much fat, too greasy….more calories.

No other way getting around it….the dish is fried fish.  The batter is the center of attention on this particular post.  It is gluten free!!  Gluten free or not, this recipe is a winner for the ones that love a light crunchy batter, full of flavor.  I have made the recipe a couple of times and it is still a winner.

Fried Fish Batter

1/2 cup gluten free flour (plenty of them at the grocery stores.  I used a brown rice flour.)

1/2 cup cornstarch

1/2 tablespoon gluten free baking powder

1/2 teaspoon sugar

3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1/4 teaspoon salt, optional (I did not use salt.)

Club Soda

Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl.  Slowly, start adding club soda, whisking, until a coating consistency is obtained.  You want to be able to dip the fish pieces and have a thorough coating.

dscn0421

I was looking for cod today, but could not find any.  Instead, I got fresh rock fish.  Cut it in bite size pieces.  A nice coating of batter, fried for a few minutes and served.

dscn0420

dscn0422

Broccoli was the vegetable I chose.  Two sauces were made.  One with ketchup and horseradish to taste.  The other, mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar and relish.

dscn0423

This was sooo easy.  Guess what?  Like a beer batter better?  Several gluten free beers are on the market.  Substitute the beer for the club soda.

Note:  This recipe can be doubled.

Like it a bit spicier?  You know what to do…add more cayenne.  Make it your own!!  Enjoy!!

Cake Break, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Gourmet Cupcakes, Pull Apart Cakes, Sticky Buns, Jewish Apple Cake, Giant Chocolate Chip Cookies, Mini Bites Holiday Cupcakes, Rum Raising Bread Pudding, Biscotti, Gluten Free & Vegan Baked Goods, Nut Free Facility….and, a Bold Cup of Coffee, Delaware Beaches

dscn0329

I arrived at Downtown Rehoboth Beach about 7 a.m. on Sunday.  The fog was pretty thick.  The town was pretty quiet.  The Rehoboth Beach marathon runners must have been exhausted after such a busy Saturday.

dscn0326

Cake Break was open, as usual.  Debbie, Bill and their staff are on the go 24/7.  How they do it?  I really don’t know.  On Saturday, they were at Cake Break at 4 a.m. in order to get ready for the runners.

dscn0349

I was in need of a bold cup of coffee.  Cake Break is located at 7 South First Street.  It is the heart of Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-260-9264.  Website?  http://www.cakebreakrehoboth.com.  They open every day at 7 a.m.

This is a nut free facility.  So if you have an allergy to peanuts, you don’t have to worry.  They offer gluten free and vegan baked goods.  And, they have good news….visit the website above mentioned and you will notice that you can buy gluten free and vegan breads, cupcakes and muffins online.

dscn0334

It is the Holiday Season and Debbie showed me the Holiday Gingerbread House.  You can order it just like you see it, here on the photo, or just order one house.  Whatever you want, they can do it.  Just give them a call.

dscn0336

Another Holiday Season favorites are the Pull Apart Cakes made out of cupcakes.  Coming out of the kitchen were the Christmas and the Nutcracker.  They also have yule logs and stollens.

dscn0332

dscn0330

I thought the mini bites looked great and perfect for a party.  Just pick them up and pop them in your mouth.

dscn0344

Fresh Jewish Apple Cakes with 2 layers of apples were just baked.

dscn0342

Giant chocolate ship cookies…..I resisted.

dscn0341

Biscotti…Chocolate, Bailey’s & Chocolate & Fruit.

dscn0343

Croissants:  Butter, Raspberry Cream Cheese, Blueberry Cream Cheese, and Chocolate.

dscn0347

The Rum Raising Bread Pudding was still so warm.

dscn0350

And, the sticky buns were too tempting…still, I resisted.

dscn0339

I have had the Gluten Free & Vegan Blueberry Muffin and I can tell you that it is very good.  Moist and just the right amount of sweetness.

dscn0348

After chatting with Debbie and Bill, it was time to go home with my chocolate gluten free cupcakes with cream cheese icing.

dscn0359

Cake Break cupcakes are dense and a great treat.  You just have to try them and see for yourself.

Have a good one!!
