Okay, I agree…no fun if you are at the beach and it is raining cats and dogs….the kids are driving you insane….and why did we choose this week? Friday, 6/14 – Family Boat-Building Weekend on the Banks of the Canal – Lewes was a shipbuilding town, where hundreds of vessels were built. Rekindle this art in Lewes as part of their Family Boatbuilding Weekend over Father’s Day weekend. Support their participating groups and families as they build wooden boats called “Bevin Skiffs” June 14-16 in front of the Lewes Lifesaving Station to view more than 16 wooden boats made by wood boat enthusiasts. Saturday, 6/15 – The 23rd Annual Lewes Garden Tour 2013 – Rain or Shine!! It is sponsored by The Lewes Chamber of Commerce, http://www.leweschamber.com. This is a self-guuided tour of 7 private gardens and one public garden in the Historic Seaport town of Lewes. Five of this year’s gardens are all located in or near the Historic Distric. Many of them are walking distance from the Zwaanendael Park where the Garden market and the Chamber’s Visitor Center are located. Two of the gardens are located on the Lewes Beach-side of the canal.
Lewes’ newest public garden will be on the tour. The Children’s Learning Garden, designed to teach children about all aspects of gardening, is a new initiative by Lewes in Bloom, the award-winning volunteer organization responsible for the beautification of Lewes.
It will be a fun day with more than 40 vendors specializing in garden related retail items and working artists will be in the tour gardens painting. Tour visitors can enjoy beverages and lunch in the Refreshment Tent provided by Cafe Amici in Zwaanendael Park with coffee service beginning at 8 a.m. During the hours of the tour, free shuttle service is available for ticket holders.

The coastal town of Lewes, Delaware is located by Cape Henlopen, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Delaware Bay. It was first settled by the Dutch in 1631.
It is the First Town in the First State. And, if you even thought for a moment that Lewes rolls its sidewalk at dusk….then you have to visit this historic charming and much loved and respected town.

Friday, 4/19 – “Delaware’s Destiny Determined by Lewes” – Presentation by Supreme Court Justice, Randy Holland. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Lewes Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall at 133 Kings Highway. “Delaware’s Destiny Determined by Lewes” is being introduced in Delaware at this Historical Society program and according to Michael DiPaolo, Executive Director of The Lewes Historical Society, a “copy of the book will be presented to each guest at no cost, in recognition of the launching of this first-time historic account, compliments of the author and the Delaware Heritage Commission” Following the presentation, Justice Holland will sign copies of the book. This is the largest community fundraiser, drawing over 2,000 people over 2 days of events in support of people and families affected by autism and raising the money to show it. Sunday, 4/21 and 4/28 – Take Me Out to the Ball Game” – The Lewes Vintage Base Ball Club, participating in the Mid Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League and a member of the Vintage Base Ball Association will be playing both Sundays at the University of Delaware Lewes campus near the Virden Conference Center grounds at 700 Pilottown Rd. in Lewes. “The earliest known reference to date of baseball in Lewes is from February of 1874 when a match pitting Lewes against Milton was advertised for March 1, 1874.” The Lewes Vintage Base Ball Club plays by 1864 rules which have several differences from contemporary baseball, the most notable being the ability to catch the ball on one bounce for an out and no gloves permitted for outfielders. Additionally, pitchers throw underhand; batters are called strikers; strikes are called when a striker does not attempt to swing the bat after a warning from the umpire; and foul balls can be caught on the bounce for an out. Games are 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Sunday, 4/21 is Lewes vs. The Elkton Eclipse and on Sunday 4/28 is Lewes vs. the Diamond States. Holidays at the Delaware Beaches are not hectic by any means. If you are spending time here you know what I mean. It is a laissez faire attitude. We love it and that’s why visitors love it, as well. No big malls, just the outlets; plenty of independent boutiques, which make it so easy to shop. It does help that we have tax free shopping.

This engaging documentary traces the singular life and career of the legendary New York Times fashion photographer Bill Cunningham, whose iconic photos have spotlighted everything from hip-hop to haute couture. He is now in his 80s and continues to bike around New York shooting the New York Times “On the Street” photo section. This multiple award-winning film (including Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary) contrasts the busy life of the energetic and engaging Cunningham with the changin face of his Manhattan, including the possibility of Cunningham’s eviction from the venerable Carnegie Hall studios, where he has lived and worked since 1940. The San Francisco Chronicle calls the film “deeply moving” and “visually stunning”. Runtime: 84 minutes. Not rated. This uproarious comedy-drama centers on the 2 women, a committed couple for 31 years. Stella (Dukakis), has a foul mouth and a taste for confrontation. Dot (Fricker) is losing both her sight and her grip on reality. When Dot’s neurotic granddaughter shows up, announcing that she intends to break the couple up by putting Dot in a nursing home, Stella sees a way out: they must head to Canada and get married. Where the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet at Cape Henlopen, that’s where you will find the charming coastal town of Lewes. It is no ordinary town; it is the First town in the First State.

Thursday, 4/12 through Sunday, 4/15 – 3rd Annual Lewes Tulip Festival. Lewes in Bloom and other volunteers have planted more than 10,000 bulbs in the City’s parks and public places in the past 3 years.
Originally, the colors selected were red and white and blue, colors of both, the Dutch and American flags.
The Lewes Historical Society is hosting a new event this year, associated with the Preservations Awared. It is called Restoration Destination; a Restoration and Home Builder’s Expo to be held at the Lewes Presbyterian Church, located at 133 Kings Highway, on Friday and Saturday. Saturday, 4/14 – Flea Market at the Seaside Nature Center from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Flea Market is hosted by The Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park. The Seaside Nature Center is inside the Park located at 15099 Cape Henlopen Dr. For purposes of GPS you might need to put in the old address, 42 Cape Henlopen Drive, Lewes, DE 19958.
Clean items may be donated by dropping them off on Friday, 4/13, at the Nature Center Auditorium from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. If it rains, the flea market will be held in the Auditorium. More info? Please visit www.friendsofcapehenlopen.org.
At the Zwaanendael Museum, located at 3rd St. and Savannah Rd., you will find on Saturday, 4/14:
The Zwaanendael Women’s Club sponsors “Get Ready for Earth Day”. There will be Conservation Exhibits and information throughout the whole day.
The Museum will also be presenting on Saturday “Savory Sussex” from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Charlie Smith, 4th generation farmer and co-owner of T.S. Smith & Sons farm in Bridgeville, DE will be the speaker at the final installment of “Savory Sussex”. This is a Free event. Call to reserve a seat since there is limited space. Tel. 302-645-1148.
Charlie Smith will talk about his farm’s 105 year history, its sustainable approach to agriculture and the public’s opportunity to visit and tour the farm. Samples of cream of asparagus soup made by Charlie’s sister, Susan, will be shared along with the family recipe.

Visitors that come to Lewes are always enchanted by the character of this Historic Town. The shops, the restaurants, the scenery. But, Lewes is also known for its residents. They are friendly, loyal, and most of all really love the town and what it stands for. Lewes has so many events on their 2011 schedule.
Thursday, 3/31 – Bethany Blues, Lewes is celebrating their 2 year anniversary starting at 8:00 p.m. Bethany Blues is located at 18385 Coastal Highway. Tel. 302-644-2500. Since it will be a celebration, they will be having great specials.
Live music by Jimi Smooth & Hit Time. Their genre is Funk, R & B, and Soul. You know, favorite Motown and Soul classics. Check their website at www.jimismoothandhittime.com. If you visit Dewey Beach in the summer, they are regulars at the Delaware Beaches.

Saturday, 4/2 – A Talk about Delaware’s Lighthouses at 2:00 p.m. Free!! The talk will be given by Judith Roales of the Delaware River and Bay Lighthouse Foundation. Location? The Zwaanendael Museum at 102 Kings Highway, Lewes.
This foundation is working actively on behalf of Delaware’s Lighthouses. The State’s oldest one, at Cape Henlopen was lost to erosion in 1924. The Bombay Hook Light one was demolished in 1974, the New Castle Bar Light was destroyed in 1982 and the Mahon River Light burned in 1984 just at the preservation group was being formed. Saturday, 4/9 – Flea Market – Seaside Nature Center located inside the Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes. Time? From 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. It is sponsored by the Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park.

Sunday, 4/10 – Autism Delaware half-marathon, 5K and children’s run. All starting and ending at Irish Eyes on Anglers Rd., Lewes. Registration starts at 6:45 a.m. and the runs will start at 7:50 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.

Thursday, 4/14 – Lewes Preservation Dinner, which is sponsored by the Lewes Historical Society to honor area residents for their commitment to historical preservation will be at the Lewes Yacht Club starting at 5:30 p.m. $50. It is the 2nd Annual Lewes Tulip Festival. The Town of Lewes celebrates spring and the town’s Dutch heritage. It is centered around Zwaanendael Park.
In the fall of 2009, Lewes in Bloom selected red and white tulips and blue Muscari bulbs to showcase a red, white and blue theme; colors of the Dutch and American flags.
This past fall the addition of pink tulips will add to the color spectrum; also more red and white bulbs were planted, as well.
