Many come year after year to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, which is also known as The Nation’s Summer Capital.  This coastal town has grown so much.  It used to be just a summer resort….not anymore.  Rehoboth Beach is a vibrant year-round community, offering gorgeous beaches, an award winning boardwalk, tax free shopping, great restaurants….the boardwalk grub, entertainment, theater…The best place to start is with the Rehoboth Beach Museum.  The Museum is also the home of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society, whose mission is to preserve and showcase artifacts that illustrate the development of Rehoboth Beach.

The Rehoboth Beach Museum is located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue, near the traffic circle and the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center.  Tel. 302-227-7310.  Website?  http://www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.

So, what’s going on at the Museum?

Until the end of April – The Rehoboth Beach Museum partnered with The Cape Henlopen High School Photography Club and art teacher, Colleen Lowe, to create a window at the museum.  The effect of the glass-like painted sea creatures is especially vivid at night.  It pays homage to the art glass artist Dale Chihuly.

Someone told me that in Lewes, Delaware, they say that Lewes has history…but Rehoboth Beach, just has a past!!

If you love coming to Rehoboth Beach….then, learn a little bit about it in a very fun and casual way.  This popular coastal town has come so far.  At times you have to visit the past to see how the future has developed.  I always say that a visit to the Rehoboth Beach Museum is a must.  It is such a doable museum.  It is also the home of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society.  The museum is in the old “ice house”.  Location?  511 Rehoboth Avenue.  The hours are Monday, Thursday, Friday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.  Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.  Until Memorial Week-End the museum is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesday.  Website?  http://www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.  Tel. 302-227-7310.  Regular admission is $5 for adults; $3 for seniors, college students and military; $2 for children ages 13-17.  Members and children 12 and under are free.

The following are the events that will be held this week:

REHOBOTH BEACH MUSEUM AND JOLLY TROLLEY LOCAL HISTORY TOURS BEGIN – Last Fall I had the opportunity to go along on the history tour.  It was so much fun.  The Jolly Trolley is an institution in Rehoboth Beach/Dewey Beach.  It originated in 1970 and it celebrates the sights, smells, colors and characteristics of the resort area.  You might have seen the Jolly Trolley carrying passengers to and from Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach.  It is the best way to get around during the summer season.

Sea_Witch_Magical_History_Tour

The Jolly Trolley began when a group of locals wanted to have a means of transportation that would let visitors get a feel for the area.  The rest is history!

dscn3129

The Jolly Trolley is also a year-round charter service.  Just in case you need them, the website is http://www.jollytrolley.com.  Tel. 302-227-1197, 302-249-1605.  The tour bus is probably going to be the enclosed one.  Better for everyone to hear the driver and the tour guide.

dscn9098

The first tour of the season will be starting on Thursday, May 16th, at 9 a.m.  It will last about 40 minutes.  Other tour dates are June 13th, August 15th, September 19th, and October 25th.  The Trolley tour will start and end at the Anna Hazzard Museum at 17 Christian Street in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  The cost of the tour is $10, which includes entrance fee for the Anna Hazzard House and the Rehoboth Beach Museum.  Reservations are required.  You may call the museum at 302-227-7310.

dscn9133

The Anna Hazzard House was one of the original “tent” buildings, dating to the 1870’s.  It reflects the early history of Rehoboth Beach.

dscn9134

During the tour, visitors will experience first hand pieces of the history of Rehoboth Beach, such as the birth of the town as a Methodist Camp Meeting site and its growth as a resort town.  Learn about shipwrecks, submarines, storms and sand dunes.  Totally recommend it.

REHOBOTH BEACH MUSEUM ASKS “WHAT’S IN YOUR ATTIC?” – The Museum offers the chance to search those boxes in your attic for Rehoboth Beach memorabilia.  On Thursday, May 16th, at 7:00 p.m. bring your something special to the Museum to share with others.  Keepsakes from the Rehoboth Beach area only are welcome.

Dolle's Candy Box from the 1930's.

Dolle's Candy Box from the 1930's.

Reservations are required for this event.  This program is free for members and included in the cost of admission for the general public.  Please call the museum for reservations and information at 302-227-7310.

Tables will be available to display the treasures.  This event will be a great opportunity to explore others’ little pieces of history and to share stories.

MUSEUM KICKS OFF SUMMER SEASON – Area residents are invited to join members of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society as the Society kicks off the summer season with a canal-side party at the Rehoboth Beach Museum.  It will be held on Saturday, May 18th at the museum from 4 until 6 p.m.  Guests will enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres, take a chance on winning raffle prizes, purchase plants for sale to fill in that last empty spot in a garden and enjoy the quiet before the start of another busy season.  The Society will also present the Hall of Fame award to Paul Preston Davis.

Kickoff_002

Tickets are $25 for members and $35 for non-members.  Raffle tickets can be purchased at the event and are 3 for $5 and 7 for $10.

You may make a reservation by phone with a credit card by calling 302-227-7310.

Have a Good One!!  Talk to you later.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, The Nation’s Summer Capital, Warm Weather, Blue Skies, A Taste of Summer!

dscn4570

A Taste of Summer!!  You can just tell Rehoboth Beach is ready; excitement is in the air.  My parking Angel came on handy as I found parking just by the Bandstand on Rehoboth Avenue, overlooking Thrasher’s, Kohr Bros, and Dolle’s!!

dscn3130

Then, another telltale that summer is upon us is The Jolly Trolley….a great way to get around.  It was parked right by the Bandstand, waiting for customers.  The Jolly Trolley celebrates and shares the sights, smells, colors and characteristics of the Rehoboth Beach/Dewey Beach Resort areas.  Friday, 5/10, until 2 a.m.  Saturday, 5/11,  10 a.m. until 2 a.m.  Memorial Day, The Jolly Trolley will be servicing the area every day from 8 a.m. until 2 a.m. $2.50 one way.  Children under 5 years of age pay $1.  For more info., please visit http://www.jolllytrolley.com.

dscn3129

I spotted a kid coming out with a freshly made funnel cake!!  He showed it to me and this really screamed summer!

dscn3131

Then I asked the friends from Smyrna, Delaware if I could take their picture with their summer favorite.  From Kohr Bros!!  One just showed me the cone; the other one was not shy.

dscn3140dscn3141

Then, I turned around because it smelled so good…Thrasher’s French Fries!!  Perfectly cooked, crispy….hopefully, she showered them with vinegar.

dscn3142

The Boardwalk Grub…it’s what you will remember.  Rehoboth Beach has wonderful restaurants.  They are really good!  But, there is something about hitting those summer favorites, right by the water!!  Priceless!

Which reminds me that the Rehoboth Museum, located on Rehoboth Avenue by the Visitor’s Center, is opening an exhibit called “Beach Eats” on Memorial Day.  It will feature memorabilia from establishments both old and new that have served generations of locals and beach-goers for years.  According to the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and Museum Director, Nancy Alexander, the eateries in the resort city bring back many happy times and stories that go along with them.

dscn3134

If you happen to have memorabilia from local restaurants that you’d like to share for the exhibit, please call her at 302-227-7310.  Visit http://www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.

It was great to see the Boardwalk crowded.  And, the ones sitting by the beach were enjoying one awesome day!

dscn3132

dscn3133

Playland is already opend on the south side of the Boardwalk.

dscn3135

The Beach Arcade on the north side of the Boardwalk has also opened.

dscn3138

Summer tends to have an effect on people.  It is that laissez faire attitude, when we let things take their own course….so when you leave it all behind this summer to come to Southern Delaware, remember….

Having lived at the Delaware Beaches for so many years, visiting the local museums, where you can unlock the past so that you can see where we are going, is a must if you are visiting or living, here at the beach.  I know, I know, the beach, restaurants, and shops are probably what you are coming to the beach for…these museums will not take a long time.  You never know, you might be retiring to the Delaware Beaches; low property taxes and tax free shopping!!!

The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society’s mission is “to preserve and showcase artifacts that illustrate the development of our beautiful city by the sea”.

coastartillerycorps

Until March 17h, the exhibit currently on display is “WWII:  Rehoboth Beach” – In Rehoboth there were Coast Guardsmen on horseback, a Civil Air Patrol airfield…the Civil Air Patrol pilots kept our waters safe from the enemy.  There were also blackouts and stage door canteens.  You can view at the Museum the artifacts that help tell the story of a beach town during the war.  A 1940’s kitchen, listen to the music of the Mills Brothers and the Tommy Dorsey Band.  Children visiting the Museum can learn how to send a Morse Code.  And you can grab a recipe for creamed chipped beef on toast!!

Clear_Space_Performers_Press (1)

Thursday, February 14th – Valentine’s Day Stage Door Canteen, a Valentine’s Day Musical Revue.  The response has been overwhelming, so, instead of holding it at the Rehoboth Museum, it has been moved to Clear Space Theatre located at 20 Baltimore Avenue in downtown Rehoboth Beach,   It will start at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are $14 (cash or check only for that night) in honor of the holiday and light refreshments will be served.  A cash bar will be available, as well.  Please call 302-227-7310 to reserve your seat.

This performance concurs with the WWII exhibit on display at the Rehoboth Museum.  Clear Space, http://www.clearspacetheatre.org, will take the audience on a sentimental journey to another era with a presentation of popular wartime songs; Chattanooga Choo-Choo, You’ll Never Know, and I’ll Be Seeing You.

Stage Canteens were special clubs and the guests were the steady stream of GIs headed off to war.  Many were leaving home for the first time and the Canteens offered a welcome opportunity to forget their anxieties, if only for a time, with entertainment, fellowship and a little American spirit.

Top_Secret_Rosies

Friday, March 8th – Documentary, “Top Secret Rosies”, in honor of Women’s History Month in March, at the Rehoboth Beach Museum located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue, by the roundabout.  The documentary will start at 7:00 p.m. in the museum’s Cooper Gallery.  Please note that reservations are required for this event, since the space is limited.  All you have to do is call 302-227-7310 and make the reservation.  Light refreshments will be served.  Free for members of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and $5 donation from non-members.

The film was produced and directed by Leann Erickson.  The film explores, with four of the “Top Secret Rosies” the importance of their role in the Allied successes.  The 4 vastly different women share what it was like as a human computer and how they sometimes worked night, day and night again.  It was up to these women to make sure those in the air and on the battle grounds received the accurate calculations needed to achieve success in hitting their targets.

Have a great day!!  Talk to you later.

The Rehoboth Beach Museum and the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society have one home; The Old Ice House, in Rehoboth Beach.  Both are a starting point to better know this seaside community.  It is a great place to dive into its local history.  Afterall, this is the Nation’s Summer Capital.

img_5735

The location?  511 Rehoboth Avenue, right by the roundabout, and next to the Rehoboth Beach Chamber of Commerce Visitors’ Center.  Tel. 302-227-7310.  Website?  www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.

Rehoboth Beach is a year-round resort.  I was just telling a couple of ladies that were having dinner last night at the Blue Moon, how different it was when we came to the area in the mid-1970s.  After Labor Day, the scene was completely, shall we say, subdued.  When I mention in my posts the “Second Season”, this season is just those months of mid January until March.  The rest of the time?  Well, it is quite a busy town.

The Rehoboth Beach Museum and the Historical Society deserve their own post; just check out what’s in store for you if you are visiting.

Wednesday, 10/26 – Surf Board Shaper’s Forum at 6:00 p.m. – Ever wanted to know what goes into the making of a surfboard?  Did you know that many boards used in the 60s and 70s were not mass produced and some were even made right here in Delaware?  Some boards are still made here today.  Come and join members and friends as they explore the making of surfboards throughout history and the surfboard shaping scene going on right now.  Meet some folks who are making and decorating boards in Delaware.  You will also get to see the latest exhibit: Skimming the Surface.

Local businesses are helping to transform the Museum into an international center of flavors.  Works of art with an international flair from local artists will be available for sale.  Music from the countries represented and decorations will be part of this event.

I don’t know if you knew that Rehoboth Beach was founded by the Methodists for the purpose of holding camp meetings in the late 1800’s.  Later, after the camp meetings ended, there were a number of families who came from far away places and who started businesses in the city.  Germans, Greeks, Russians and Italian families whose businesses helped make the city a vibrant, bustling destination for summer visitors.

So, this is a celebration of the city’s international connections with a tasting of wines and cheeses from around the world.

Proceeds from this event will be for the children’s educational room at the museum.  Tickets are $40 per person, or $75 per couple.  More info?  Please call 302-227-7310 to make a reservation by phone with a credit card.

DeBraak shipwreck project and was a consultant to the director of the naval historical film Master and Commander.  Prior to working with the State of Delaware, he had several key positions with Historic St. Mary’s City, Maryland.

The Rehoboth Beach Museum was opened to the public in 2007.  I think that for most of us that love Rehoboth Beach and promote it, the Museum gives us a starting point in order to show our friends and families that visit, what a gem this town has become.  A visit to the Museum will show you Rehoboth then; you are already experiencing what it is now.  So, why not dive into the local history of our town and see why so many call Rehoboth Beach “The Nation’s Summer Capital”.

Both, the Rehoboth Beach Museum and the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society call home the Old Ice House, which is near the canal.  John A. Lingo built the first wooden ice house at that location in 1912.  At the time, ice was harvested from Silver Lake, in Rehoboth Beach.  While visiting the Rehoboth Beach Museum you will be able to see the Lingo’s Family Bible on display as you come in.

The location for the Museum is 511 Rehoboth Avenue, right by the roundabout, and next to the Rehoboth Beach Chamber of Commerce Visitors’ Center.  The tel. is 302-227-7310 and the website is www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.

Light refreshments will be served.  Please call 302-227-7310 to reserve a space.  Admission will be $3.  Free parking available.

Continuing with the “surfing” theme is the Museum’s newest exhibit “Skimming the Surface: Surfing, Skimboarding and Floating Off the Delaware Coast”.  The exhibit is a celebration of the surfing community that was along the Delaware coast during the 1960s and 1970s.  Some of these surfers made their mark on the regional surf scene.

I stopped to check it out.  You will see surfboards and surfing related items from those years; boards that were used for fun and competition in regional contests by local surfers.

Skimboards from the 1940s through the 1980s help tell the story of the development of skimboarding, particularly in Dewey Beach.  Photos, surfing accessories, a vintage inflatable raft, among other items, provide a peek into the past.  For more information, please check the website above mentioned.

Besides the Skimming the Surface exhibit, the Museum has a Funland exhibit.  If you grew up in Rehoboth Beach, have vacationed here with kids, or have had your kids grow up here, then, I am sure you took them to Funland.  Lots of rides, food and games, right on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk.

Part of the original train is at the exhibit, beautifully preserved.

Information on the Old Ice House is also available.  Did you know that before household refrigerators were common, people would store their watermelons at the ice house for 25 cents?  They would carve their initials for identification.

The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society celebrates this tradition with the Annual Watermelon Festival, which will take place on Saturday, August 13th in Grove Park from 3 – 6 p.m.  Admission is $3 for ages 13 and older, $2 for children 5 to 12.  Children 4 and younger are free.  Admission to the festival also includes admission to the Rehoboth Beach Museum.

WMFCrafts

There will music from 3-4 p.m., 4-5 p.m. watermelon eating contests by age and from 5-6 p.m. watermelon seed spitting contests by age.  Hula Hooping and Paddle Ball, as well.

The Rehoboth Museum is a very manageable museum.  I know you want to be on the beach but I assure you, it will be worth visiting.
