Destination? Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Christmas In Rehoboth Beach, Happy Holidays, Tax Free Shopping, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

DSCN1567

So many visitors come to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, year round.  Rehoboth was incorporated in 1873 to create a Christian seaside resort.  The railroad was extended in 1878 to Rehoboth Beach, therefore, bringing more visitors and businesses to this seaside town.  In 1879 the town was renamed “The Rehoboth Beach Association”.  The population has grown over the years.  Plenty of summer visitors and part time residents increase the population significantly .

During Christmas I love grabbing something to eat in town with a friend….come to think of it I just did that with my friend, Jody.  Stopping at Dogfish Head on Rehoboth Avenue for one of my favorite salads….their pub salad topped with grilled salmon and a delicious dressing is not to be missed.  It looks good and it tasted even better.

DSCN1571

If you decided to visit Rehoboth Beach during the Holidays you will find the town looking more beautiful than ever.  Tiny lights cover the trees in town.  The Boardwalk is a mile long.  It was quiet when Jody and I were walking, no one around.

The town of Rehoboth Beach was incorporated in 1873.  It was to be a Christian Seaside Resort.  But, by 1878 the railroad was extended to Rehoboth Beach, bringing visitors and businesses to the area.  A mile long award-winning boardwalk provides the tourists and the residents opportunities for walking, and jogging practically at the water’s edge.  Through the years Rehoboth Beach has changed, but it has also kept its charm as a seaside resort where every summer memories are made.  It has come a long way.  It is a dining destination with so many of its chefs outdoing one another in friendly competition.  Entertainment, the arts, tax free shopping and the beach….yes, it is so nice living at the beach and I do not take it for granted.

It seems so long ago when I would take my two boys for art classes and summer camps at the Rehoboth Art League (RAL).  As a young mother I wanted them to be exposed to the arts.  No better place to enjoy, learn and be inspired than the setting of the RAL.

The Rehoboth Art League is located at 12 Dodds Lane, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. 302-227-8408.  Website?  htttp://www.rehobothartleague.org

The RAL is celebrating and they have reason to:  75 Years!!  So many events are scheduled through 2014 so be sure to check the above mentioned website, whether you live here or you are visiting.

SALONS – “A Salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host.  It is held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase the knowledge of the participants through conversation.”

During the 17th century…it was a time when women or Salonnieres were a powerful influence in the Salon.  Many ambitious women used the Salon to pursue a form of higher education.

Last June and continuing through Mid 2014 the Monthly Salons began to take place.  These salons are an updated take on the fashionable Salons of 17th century Paris.  The Salons in Rehoboth Beach will feature a unique and vibrant art related topic followed by a discussion led by a leading professional on that particular month’s topic.  After June, the Salons will take place quarterly.

Salon #9 will take place on Thursday, March 27th at Dogfish Head located in Rehoboth Avenue.  It will be upstairs.  The topic will be Art of Mixology.  It will start at 6 p.m.  The Salonniere will be Mrs. Debra Killeen who is very excited about an evening of relaxation, learning the art of Mixology and the enjoyment of a few off centered drinks from the masters at Dogfish.  The cost is $25.00.  Please call 302-227-8408 for ticket information.

The evening will combine the art of the perfect drink.  It will be entertaining, enlightening and definitely a most captivating evening!!

Please note that when in town, stop at the the Rehoboth Art League Annex on The Avenue located in the old McQuay’s building on Rehoboth Avenue, across from the Visitors Center.

You can walk the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk while breathing in the ocean air and taking in the gorgeous scenery.

You might have to walk it a few times if you are like me…..taking my friend, Ron, to eat his first pizza at Nicola Pizza the other day.  I told them that Ron knew how to make pizza.  He says he can make a Chicago pizza on the grill that it is to die for.  I said to the server…make it a large, half sweet peppers and mushrooms; the other half sausage and onions….well done, please.  I think Ron liked it!!

I could tell that it was August because Staples was packed…this is their Christmas when everyone is ready to go back to school.  Rehoboth Beach is open year-round and even though the summer of 2013 might be coming to an end, this town is just getting started.  There is still time to think about all the festivals and the comings and goings of this coastal town….stay tuned for that.

In the meantime…..What’s Going On?

Friday, 8/9 – Clear Space Theatre Company is inviting you to join them on Friday, 8/9, for 2 FREE matinee performances at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.  WICKED will be presented by the talented students in their Musical Theatre Summer Intensive Program.  Location? 20 Baltimore Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227-2270.  Website?  http://www.clearspacetheatre.org.

Until 2014 – If you love Rehoboth Beach, you should stop by and visit the Rehoboth Beach Museum.  It is an easy museum to navigate and you will still have plenty of time to hit the beach, shops, and restaurants.  You can learn how Rehoboth Beach was then and how it has developed during these years.  The present exhibit is “Beach Eats”.  Rehoboth Beach is a dining destination, as well, and the exhibit celebrates over 100 years of eating in Rehoboth Beach, from the grub to the fine dining.  For more information please visit http://www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.

If you have been coming to the beach, you know that August is so busy….and parking can be a hair raising experience.  So, for the 40th Annual Outdoor Fine Art & Fine Crafts Show this is what you should do:

dscn7246

Since the parking in Henlopen Acres is very limited, the Art League is suggesting you use the Jolly Trolley.  Two convenient locations:  Park your car at either the Kmart on Rt. 1 or at the Rehoboth Beach ElementarySchool at 500 Stockley Avenue.  The shuttle will begin running at 9:45 a.m. and will be making continuous loops to the Outdoor Show.  I have used it and recommend it.

If you decide to venture and park in Henlopen Acres, please be considerate of the residents.  Adhere to parking restrictions, including no parking on the street. Unless there is a “No Parking” sign, all vehicles must park on the grass with tires off the pavement.  Yes, you heard me right and I write this too from experience.

For the 2 week-ends of the show, Henlopen Acres’ Dodd’s Lane, beginning at the instersection of Rolling Rd. and Tidewaters, from Dodd’s Lane to Zwaanendael, will be  temporarily one way street.  Visitors will be entering Henlopen Acres by making a left off of Columbia Avenue and exiting Henlopen Acres across from Rehoboth Beach’s Surf Avenue.
