Located for the past 14 years on the Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware…222 Rehoboth Avenue.  Tel. 302-226-0176.  Owners are John and Joyce Michalek.  This is a go to bakery if you are spending time in Rehoboth Beach.  There are just a few full fledge bakeries in Rehoboth and to be honest they are all great, but yesterday my stop was at The Bake Shoppe getting a few Christmas goodies for my accountant.  The bakery is small and cozy.  You can sit and have a coffee enjoying some of their delicious baked goods.  A breakfast sandwich?  They serve those too at The Bake Shoppe.

dscn2920

It is a local’s hangout with plenty of residents stopping by early in the morning.  The Bake Shoppe is open year-round.  On Christmas Eve they will be opening until 3 p.m.

Bakeries are happy places; the aroma of cookies, cakes, breads, pies, always bringing out childhood memories.  At this time of the year look what I found at The Bake Shoppe on The Avenue.

Christmas baking is colorful and plentiful.

Little Fig Cakes, Modern Mixture, Spanish Custom, Cafe Con Leche….Yum!! Delaware Beaches, Rehoboth Beach, Southern Delaware, Friday, 10/8, Saturday, 10/9, Dru Tevis will be making yeast donuts, Fresh and to Order

dscn6353

I remember growing up in the Island of Puerto Rico.  The Spanish culture is one that likes to enjoy the good things in life.  The small towns in Puerto Rico, when I was growing up, were what towns throughout the U.S. are trying to achieve now….that Main Street type of atmosphere.  That sense of being able to walk the sidewalks, greet your neighbors and plenty of times, be invited for a good cup of coffe, by a neighbor or relative…Cafe con Lefche, which is coffee with milk, or a Cafe Cortado, which only has some milk, or the classic Spanish Pocillo.  The coffee would be accompanied by a sweet pastry or cake.

Which brings me to my short post.  Leo Cabrera is the owner of Modern Mixture, located at 62A Rehoboth Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227-0600.  Website?  http://www.modern-mixture.com His restaurant is the talk of the town.  Leo serves food that is fresh, healthy and exciting.  He closes on Tuesdays and on Sundays he is open until 3 p.m.  Otherwise, he is open.  You may call him and ask him what’s cooking on that particular day.

Modern Mixture is casual and Leo prepares great specialty drinks.

So, when Leo called me to tell me that he had fig cakes for me I ran.  The cakes were made with fig jam, from the figs tha I had given him.  They were so good and brought me those memories above mentioned….particularly the coffee at my grandmother’s house.

The little fig cakes had just the right amout of sweetness…the fig jam doing its job.  A little bit of cheese, complemented the fig jam.  The consistency was light and it reminded me a bit of cheesecake….definitely lighter, though.

dscn6357

I liked them so much I decided that they belonged as a featured post.  Thank you Leo….I loved them!!  So simple and sweet.

Note:  Stop by on Friday, 10/8 and Saturday, 10/9 at Modern Mixture from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. when Dru Tevis will be making yeast donuts fresh and to order.

Dorman’s Donut Shoppe, Coffee & Bake Shop, Bagels, Fritters, Hand Dipped Donuts, Muffin Tops, Pastries, Sticky Buns…..Good Morning to You Too!!, Delaware Beaches

dscn1657

If you want to feel good go to a bake shop…better yet, go to a doughnut shop; they are happy places. This is what happened the other day when I visited a new doughnut shop called Dorman’s Donut Shoppe that opened at the end of January.  Opening at that time of the year was going to give them plenty of practice, so when the gates open to our beaches they would be more than ready.  Surprise, surprise….they have been so busy because year-round residents have received them with open arms.  I saw it for myself, and it was great to see.

dscn1659

My friend, Richard, knows Southern Delaware; Lewes in particular, like no other.  He loves to discover new places to eat.  He is always right on target.  Following his lead I went to Dorman’s Donut Shoppe located at 33247 Peddlers Village in the Angola area, on Rt. 24.  The address shows Lewes, Delaware, but in reality, it is in between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach; just minutes away. Tel. 302-827-1075. Rt. 24 is a well traveled route from Rehoboth/Lewes to Millsboro.

dscn1627

You will find Cheryl Dorman, her daughter in law, Stephanie, and Joan Mikulak making sure you get prompt service, delivered with plenty of smiles.  They are very excited about their new business and for the looks of it, customers were too.

dscn1630

Meet Arthur Sutton; usually customers don’t want anything to do with pictures, but he was picking up his order and with a big smile told me to go ahead.  Other customers were behaving in the same way.

dscn1625

Dorman’s Donut Shoppe is comfortable with plenty of tables for customers to sit, lounge and enjoy some of the many delicious offerings.  If you are in a hurry, there is a drive-thru window, as well.

dscn1647

Everything is homemade at Dorman’s, except the bagels.  The apple fritters got my attention first; they looked great.  I decided to “tour” the counter, but not before I ordered a bold cup of coffee.

dscn1612

Then, the banana walnut baked fritters with caramelized drizzle came next.

dscn1613

Muffin tops are very popular.  People love them; favorite part of a muffin. These were banana walnut, and blueberry muffin tops.

dscn1617

Followed by the chocolate chip muffin tops.

dscn1615

Stephanie brought me a sample of doughnuts…from left to right they were:  chocolate chip with peanut butter cookie, salty caramel, chocolate frosted with a dollop of butter cream, maple walnut, and German chocolate.

dscn1618

The sticky buns looked amazing.

dscn1623

They also have homemade croissants and cookies.

dscn1645

Between customers I chatted with Cheryl and Stephanie.  Cheryl told me that her mother had been a professional baker with cakes being her specialty. They will be adding more baked goods to the shop and have plenty of ideas for the immediate future.

Dorman’s Donuts also offer locally made granola and oatmeal mixes made by by Susie’s Wild Oats.  Gluten free granola is available by special order.

dscn1634

Usually you see people buying a doughnut here or there but, I am not sure, maybe it was because it was Friday, but they were  being ordered by the dozen.

dscn1635

You can customized the doughnuts to your liking.  Stephanie was making some more doughnuts and decided to give me some to take home; her favorites.

dscn1640

dscn1649

dscn1651

dscn1654

Two complete different flavors; the salty caramel, combines that sweetness and salty taste…could become a daily addiction.  I hope not.  If you like chocolate….the chocolate frosted is sooo good.

Dorman’s opens daily early until 3 p.m.  You can find them on Facebook as Dorman’s Donut Shoppe.

Have a great day!!

Bonjour opened in 1998.  The owners are Gayle Brier and Gerard Billebaut, a husband and wife team.  I, unfortunately, did not meet them.

K & H Hot Bagels, Breakfast, Lunch, Wholesale, Retail, Rehoboth Beach, Restaurant, Review, Delaware Beaches

img_5613

Over a week ago, Trish said to me, as I was walking my neighborhood, that she was going to get bagels from the new place located at Midway.  I did not know there was a bagel place there. But, I did find out that they opened 3 months ago. Put it in the back of my mind as a possible post for my blog.

I also have a friend that eats a bagel and a banana every single day.  I, on the other hand, hardly eat bagels.  Therefore, I am no expert.

Bagels were brought to the U.S. by immigrant Polish-Jews.  In 2008, Gregory Chamitoff, an astronaut, was the first person known to have taken 18 sesame seed bagels into space on his 2008 Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station.

Today, I decided that K & H Hot Bagels was the place to check out.

img_5622

First of all, K & H Hot Bagels is located at 18675 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  It is the same shopping center where the Midway Movie Theaters are located, Rt. 1.  Tel. 302-645-1535, Fax 302-645-1570.  Plenty of parking available at all times.

They open 7 days a week.  Mondays to Saturdays from 5 a.m. until 5 p.m., Sundays from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m.

I spoke to Herberth Loaiza.  He told me that his alarm wakes him up every day at 3:00 a.m.  Yes, that early.  All bagles are baked in the premises.  No preservatives are added; everything is 100% natural, no fat, and no cholesterol.

img_5602

img_5610

They also make bialys, which are small rolls that are a traditional Polish dish.  They are similar to a bagel but instead of being boiled before baking, a bialy is simply baked and there is no hole in the middle; a depression instead.

img_5609

Herberth told me that they also bake pastries and muffins.  Breakfast is served all day.  But, the restaurant also has homemade soups, which are never frozen.

img_5621

Available are also gourmet salad sandwiches, premium cold cut and cheese sandwiches, wraps, and fresh salads. Some from the grill, like cheesesteak hero, chicken cheesesteak, tuna melt, grilled roast beef, onions, mushrooms and gravy, among others.

You can also call or fax your orders in and they will have them ready for you.

img_5608

I bought an everything bagel, a roll and a sundried tomato bagel.  I decided to eat the sundried tomato bagel and I found it to have a nice crusty outside and a soft middle.  I even ate it plain.

K & H Hot Bagels have coffee and cold drinks.  Tables are also available in case you want to sit down and take a break.

img_5615

It was time to go but not before I was able to take a peek at their kitchen which had bagels and other goodies resting until it was time to be baked.

img_5617

img_5619

img_5618

Let me know how you like them.  And, remember that they do sale retail and wholesale.

Talk to you later….what a beautiful day it was….the visitors must be having a ball!!

Cafe Papillon, Creperie, Patisserie, Rehoboth Beach, Restaurant, Review, Delaware Beaches

100_5146

What a gorgeous day it was, yesterday, at the Delaware Beaches.  I decided to go to Rehoboth and check out Cafe Papillon.  Then, I encountered a multitude of people.  Yes, they will be there today too looking for bargains on the sidewalks of Rehoboth Beach.

I had forgotten that this week-end was the sidewalk sale.  Downtown merchants in Rehoboth clean out their stores and everything pretty much goes on sale.

No, it is not my thing.  That’s probably why I did not give it too much thought.  Anyway, I had to park two streets over south of Rehoboth Avenue.

Rehoboth is a small town so it was easy walking.  Lots of people walking the Boardwalk, as well.

Cafe Papillon is located at the Penny Lane Mall, 42 Rehoboth Ave., Tel. 302-227-7568.  Website is www.cafepapillon.com. The Penny Lane Mall is a small alley full of shops that connects Rehoboth Ave. with Wilmington Ave.

 100_5144

Cafe Papillon is right in the middle of the mall.  It is an authentic French Cafe and if you speak French, well, you will be right at home.

On one side you will find the patisserie where French baked goods are sold.  Salads and sandwiches are sold there as well.  Coffee and Beverages?  On that side also. Everything is made in-house.

100_5154

I was gazing at the tropezienne, fruits tarts and eclairs, but just got coffee.  I was waiting for my crepe.

A tropezienne is a creme tart that takes a long time to prepare.  It was developed in St. Tropez using local ingredients.

100_5148

100_5149

100_5150

The creperie is on the other side and it is strictly for the purpose of ordering and cooking the crepes right there in front of you.

100_5145

100_5163

Different crepes were ordered.  One was a ham, cheese and tomato and the other an egg, smoked salmon and tomato.  I was watching him make the crepes and at the same time I wondered what he thought I was doing.  Every time he added an ingredient I took a picture.  He really did not mind, he told me so.

 100_5157

100_5158

100_5166

100_5169

I could not wait to eat it.  Outdoors at the cafe was perfect; a sunny, cool, autumn day it was.  Sitting al fresco, enjoying our breakfast made us feel we were somewhere else and not one block off the Atlantic Ocean.

Of course, we had to have a dessert crepe.  The suggestion was the Nutella and Banana Crepe.  Nutella is a hazelnut base spread very popular in Europe and I think fairly popular here in the States, as well.

100_5170

The combination of the fruit and the spread was delicious.

Just as we finished we took off for a long walk; had to.  I don’t need to explain why.

Have a great day!!  Talk to you later….

Note:  Cafe Papillon is only open on week-ends now until October 17th and then is until next year.  Another thing to remember is that they only accept cash.

The Bake Shoppe, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Famous Polish Babkas, Split Cream Donuts, Cakes, Pies, Pastries, Review, Delaware Beaches

Once again, Renee hits the nail on the head.  It is so funny because when you hear Renee talk, and had never met her, you think this woman must be huge.  Her appetite for Annie Banannies custard, and her obsession with cup cakes; eaten practically every day would make anyone gain weight just by thinking about it.  Well, she is very thin.  Really, I don’t know where she puts it.  Her target this week is a Split Cream Donut.

100_4453

She told me I needed to check the Split Cream Donuts at The Bake Shoppe, right on 222 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  The tel. is 302-226-0176.  The owners are John & Joyce Michalek and they have been at this location for 12 years (right across from the Fire Hall).

Rushing I did; had to, thinking that by the time I got there all baked goods would be gone. I could not believe it, they were out of Split Cream Donuts. So, on an on I went about Renee; well, they made one for me just on the spot.  Talking about freshly made.

Split Cream Donut

Split Cream Donut

This is a full fledge baked shop and baked goods are all made fresh, from scratch.  They have donuts, danish, cookies, cakes, beach cookie cut-outs, sticky buns, mini pastries, rustic breads and rolls, bagels, cupcakes and donuts.   The bagels come every day from the Bagel Shop in Milton, up the road, north of Lewes.

Joyce told me that they are well known for their Polish Babkas.  Babka comes from baba, a very tall, delicate yet rich yeast-risen cake from Western Russia and Eastern Poland.  Traditional Babkas have a fruit filling; the more modern ones may be filled with a chocolate or a cheese filling.

Polish Babkas

Today at the Bake Shoppe the Babkas were made out with a cheese filling and a cherry filling.  As the seasons change so do the fillings change, as well.

Joyce and and John are very friendly and will answer all your questions about their baked goods.  There is coffee available and you can even sit at a table or the bar and enjoy the treats.

100_4439

I left with my Split Cream Donut and decided to have my own tasting at home.  I can truly tell you that I have not had a donut in years.  I try not to.  They are just too fatenning period.  I am not going there.  But, gosh, I will tell you that I ate this one with great pleasure.  I did take some of the filling out so as not to feel too guilty, though.  It was very light and not dry.  Actually, the filling was light too.  Delicious!!

100_4456

Thanks Renee.

Talk to you later…you know I will….

At the Delaware Beaches….A Touch of Italy has arrived….in the town of Rehoboth Beach….”An Offer that Can’t be Refused”….

 000_0003

A serious accident prevented Lou from opening this Salumeria & Pasticceria at the beginning of the summer season.  But, now in the Second Season he is ready.  Tomorrow, Saturday, will be the second week since he opened this business on 33A Baltimore Ave. in Rehoboth Beach.  Telephone is 302-227-1500, fax number is 302-227-3900 and the website is www.touchofitalyde.com.

Everyone that knows him is very happy that he has been able to recuperate well and by the smile on his face, you could tell that since he opened, he has definitely been received with open arms and hungry stomachs.

It is a small store but very well stocked.   Besides Lou, you will find Diane, and Frankie.

They will have fresh mozzarella, prepared and even smoked in large barrels by Frankie, who learned this technique from Don Orazio who owns Casa della Mozzarella in New York.  They have even named one of the specialty sandwiches on behalf of Don Orazio.  I had that sandwich today and it could not have tasted better.  It had hot capicollo, fresh hand made mozzarella, and sun dried peppers.

Touch of Italy will have Italian cured meats/cheeses, Italian provisions, fresh breads, sandwiches, assorted cookies/pastries, homemade pasta and catering.000_0004

Everything is there for you to appreciate.  Hanging hams, salami and cheeses.  On the left hand side of the store you can buy all kinds of Italian pastas, including gnocchi with potato. They also have a variety of olive oils and balsamic vinegars, as well as black, green and kalamata olive spreads.000_0005

The pasta sauces looked great; marinara, fra diavolo, vodka, basil and one pasta sauce that caught my eye had sardines and fennel.  They also carry integrale pasta by Misura, as well as farina and polenta.

Juices like apricot and pear nectars, and soft drinks are available.  And, you can never forget to pick up a can of espresso coffee.

The store offers great pastries, all homemade like Italian Wedding Cookies in orange, lemon and vanilla flavors.  How about some almond macaroons? And, Biscotti; anise, chocolate chunk and almond. Cannolis filled to order, chocolate eclairs with custard, Italian cream puffs, tiramisu among others.  Aren’t you hungry already?

The breads come fresh from New York.  An assortment of olives, roasted peppers, seafood salad with octopus, and one of my favorites; white anchovies are among the many items this salumeria has to offer.000_0006

This is not a new business for these owners.  A Touch of Italy has been for years on 535 Atlantic Ave., in Milville, Delaware.  That is west of Bethany Beach.  Just a few minutes.  In that store only baked goods are available. The tel. is 302-539-1355.

Whether you are a local, a native, or just visiting for a while or the week-end you will really enjoy this new establishment in the heart of Rehoboth Beach.
