February 11th, 2011

I has been a pretty nice week in Delray even though we had some rain. The water has been so blue and so clear; transparent. I don’t know how many people are going to be sitting on the beach this week-end. Delray Beach has one of its big festivals starting Friday through Sunday. This town is amazing in organizing itself for such big events. So, here is what’s happening in town.

12th Annual Garlic Fest – $10 admission fee. No pets, no coolers, no chairs and no outside food or beverages. The hours: Friday from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.
The Garlic Fest celebrates garlic, cooking, music, art and so much more. It will begin on North Swinton Ave. and the grounds of the Historical Old School Square.
Please note that all downtown parking fees are being waived during the festival.
The website www.dbgarlicfest.com has been specifically designed for this event. You will find everything you need to know in it. Please do take the time to visit because there are cooking contests, food and so much entertainment and this website will explain it all.
The musician that I am interested in watching is Buddy Guy. He will be performing from 8:30 until 10:00 p.m. on Saturday evening. He is an American blues guitarist and singer; a pioneer of the Chicago blues sound. He has been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Buddy Guy is 70 years old and he is also known for his showmanship on stage.
His music has influenced Jimmy Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn and John Mayer.
Buddy Guy was ranked 30th in Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarist of all Times.

Saturday, 2/12 – Delray Green Market – This market is so wonderful. Please stop by and check all the vendors. There is music, baked goods, flowers and so much more. The location? SE 4th Avenue, South of Atlantic. It starts at 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. every Saturday. For info. please contact Lori Nolan at nolan@mydelray.com.

Have a great week-end!!!!

Yes, it is pretty quiet but for the year-round residents, I can tell you that it is a time of the year when we enjoy the breathing space. Easy parking everywhere, plenty of restaurants and shops are open; music and entertainment, as well. Not having to wait anywhere makes me a little impatient when I am in a line somewhere else; meaning I am second in line and wonder, why is it taking so long?

January 16th, 2011
This post is all about the arts. You can sit home and wait for spring to come or you can get out and experience the sizzling events that the Delaware beaches provide at this time of the year. January and February are the most quiet months of the year but considering how quiet they were when I first moved here in the 70’s, well I can tell you that they do not compare.
From the Rehoboth Beach Film Society:
Their winter series called Delmarva Roots starts Thursday, January 20th at 7:00 p.m., with Vanishing Voices of World War II. Location? Milton Fire Hall, 116 Front St., Milton, DE. This event features recollections from two dozen of the 100 veterans included in James Diehl’s two books, “World War II Heroes of Southern Delaware”, and “World War II Heroes of Coastal Delaware”. It is told from the perspective of men, and one woman, who served during that time period and today call southern Delaware home. This documentary allows Delawarean World War II veterans’ voices to be heard forever. Their stories are emotional, they are real, and they are so very candid.
From Pearl Harbor, to Iwo Jima, D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge, among many other parts of the war, they are told with passion and an enormous amount of pride in the United States of America. This documentary is not rated and it last 56 minutes.
After the screening, James Diehl, writer and co-producer of the film and author of the books that inspired it, will give a brief presentation and lead a question and answer session. He is passionate about bringing recognition to those who served in WWII and this screening and presentation will ensure that our local heroes will be remembered.
More info? Please call The Film Society Office at 302-645-9095, ext. 1. You may also call the Milton Historical Society at 302-684-1010. Admission will be $4.00. Tickets can be purchased on line, so check the website, www.rehobothfilm.com/film_events_delmarva_roots.html. They can also be purchased by calling 302-645-9095.

The “curious institution” of slavery has held an important place in American fiction from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin published in 1852 to Toni Morrison’s 2008 novel, A Mercy.

The book discussion on the 5th will focus on A Mercy, as an exemplar of how modern writers have dealt with the historical forces that caused slavery to thrive and the effects of its existence on slaves and slaveholders alike.
Sherry Chappelle is the leader of the Browseabout Book Club and will be moderating the discussion, focusing on the historical bases of Morrisons’ work and that of other modern writers who have addressed the issue in their recent fiction. These include James McBride and John Barth whose stories are based on the Delmarva, as well as writer Alexandra Stockett whose widely read work The Help investigates how the effects of slavery still are felt in our modern society.
If you have read or are reading any of these books, please join us for this discussion. Browseabout Books has offered a 10% discount on purchases of A Mercy or The Help up until 2/5/11, for readers who mention the Museum’s book discussion.

Dirty Blonde, a play with music by Claudia Shear, captures the bawdy essence of Mae West and explores the life of the legend of stage and screen. A 4 person cast, company members David Button, Michael Mathias, Dana Peragallo, and Doug Yetter will bring the 18 characters of Dirty Blonde to life.
The story will be told in a series of flashback vignettes. Mae West was an incomparable star of vaudeville, Broadway, and film in the first half of the 20th century. She was hailed as one of America’s first sex symbols. Her plays Sex and The Drag were hits, but landed her in big trouble with censors and the law. She served 8 days of a 10 day prison sentense for Sex and stars of The Drag (men in drag) were arrested and taken out of the theatre during a performance. Her most popular stage work, Diamon Lil, toured for years.
Mae West played a pivotal role in the creation of the Motion Picture Production Code, which regulated the material that could be shown or said on film. Mae West skirted around censors by using her now famous double entendres and sexual innuendos. Many of these are live on today, including “A hard man is good to find” and “When I’m good, I’m very good. When I’m bad, I’m better”.

January 5th, 2011

Last night was the first time in the New Year that I decided to go out and grab something to eat. My choice? Barbecue. Not only in the summer do I get a craving for ribs and brisket but on a cold winter night, I just love it. I barbecue year-round in my own home; I really do like it; a casual way to eat.
I wrote a post on Bethany Blues back on 1/2/10 so if you would like to read it just click on the month of January of 2010 and scroll down to the date.
Bethany Blues is located at 618285 Coastal Highway (Rt. 1), Lewes, DE 19958. The telephone is 302-644-2500. The website? www.bethanyblues.com. The first Bethany Blues is in Bethany Beach but the one in Lewes is the one that is being reviewed on this post.
This restaurant seems to be one of those in our coastal area that is crowded evey night. Something for everyone with plenty of specials and entertainment every night of the week.
As you come into the restaurant you will be greeted by their host; Michael was there last night and he has been in the Rehoboth Beach area for many years. There is also a counter where t-shirts, rubs and sauces, with the Bethany Blues label, are available for purchase.

The restaurant has booths and tables on one side for a more quiet dining atmosphere.

Last night the action was more in their bar; a football game was about to start. It is, actually, a pretty good size bar with t.v.s, booths, high tables; on one side, a stage for musical entertainment.
We decided to sit at a booth and immediately our waitress came over and when we mentioned the gluten free allergy, she proceeded to get the manager who went over the menu, sauces, etc. with us. This is one of those restaurants that is on top of the gluten allergy and other food related allergies. No gluten menu because some items change so much that they prefer to go over with them with the customer.
The appetizer we chose was a smoked pork belly, served with apple cider syrup on the side. I had never had it and it was tasty, crunchy, delicious and it reminded me of eating roasted pig in Puerto Rico. Perfect for the Three King’s holidays.

One other dish ordered was just the baby backs. On the side? A jalapeno slaw with rice vinegar and an order of creamed corn.

My dish? I guess my eyes were bigger than my stomach but besides wanting baby backs I also wanted some brisket. A side of that jalapeno slaw, which by the way had a nice refreshing kick to it and their veggies of the day.

As my dish was delivered to the table a couple went by and the lady look and my dish and said “oh that’s big”. I really did not eat it all, believe me. I have left-overs in my refrigerator, at the moment.
The meat on the ribs fell off the bone and the brisket was perfectly cooked, as well. A little bit of their papaya grilling sauce and their spicy barbecue sauce complemented them perfectly.

Definitely, there was no dessert tried.
As I mentioned before Bethany Blues is bringing entertainment to their restaurant pretty much every week. Last night they had open mic and you could bring your instruments and jam, then on Wednesdays is loveseed unplugged with Rick & Pete live, Thursday is trivia night, Saturdays is Keith Mack live. You can get more info. from their website.
But what caught my attention was Sydney’s Music Revival. Do you remember Sydney’s in Rehoboth Beach? This is the same Sydney Arzt, who developed Sydney’s restaurant in Rehoboth as a very good restaurant with very good creole food. At the same time she brought to her restaurant local and national jazz and blues musicians.
Well, for the past year she has been bringing jazz and blues to Bethany Blues. This restaurant is a new venue for Jazz and Blues at the beach. So make sure to check out the website because it is starting again on January 14th and every week after that.
The term “the blues” refers to the “blue devils”, meaning melancholy and sadness. The word “jazz” began as a West Coast slang term, first used to refer to music in Chicago about 1915.
It might be winter, here at the beaches but if you want to, you can really find plenty of things to do.
Have a great day!!…talk to you later….
September 23rd, 2010

Dewey Beach has gotten much quieter since the Labor Day Week-End. But, still the week-ends bring a lot to this town that during the summer is the beach town that never sleeps.

Having just seen the Elvis impersonator in Delray Beach, Florida I have to mention that:

Have a great time…talk to you later…
September 15th, 2010

One of the highlights of visiting Delray Beach, besides sitting on its gorgeous beach is to experience Atlantic Avenue. Restaurants, shops, outdoor dining is what they are offering. And, entertainment. It seems that there is so much music in the air.
I was just there for a few days and got to enjoy some good music.
One of the venues for entertainment is Jonnie Brown’s located on 301 E. Atlantic Ave., tel. 561-243-9911. Burgers, Ribs, and classic Rock n’ Roll.
We had pretty good hamburgers. Nice size with an order of fries.
On Thursdays, you will find the Elvis impersonator. He has been at this location for many years. Has a huge following. One of those is a lady we met. She was 72 years old. Always there and always dancing. That’s what is keeping her so young. She was unbelievable.

I was there on Friday, as well, and there she was, dancing and enjoying Ryan & The Rockers. Her husband, a spoon player was introduced and did a number for the audience.

She is the one in the blue shirt.

Ryan & The Rockers were so much fun and completely different from the performance on Thursday.
Then, Saturday comes along and brings Rosarito, an igualita from Puerto Rico, and her husband, Kiki, to Delray. They had never been and off we went to listen to The Flyers. They could not believe the atmosphere in Delray and is still off season.
The Flyers usually play at Johnnie Brown’s on Wednesdays but had an extra performance that week. If you get an opportunity, do go and listen to them, because they are very talented and versatile.
Another venue for dinner, music and dancing is Il Bacio. I did not experience the food, so I can’t tell you how it is. The patio is where the music is happening. The location is 29 S.E. 2nd Ave., Tel. 561-865-7785. website is www.ilbacioofdelray.com. There is a cover and it is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

The first night Shelley and I went, we thought we would not be able to get in. But, why? Well, let’s say we were at least 20 years older than every person there. Not only were we older, but it seemed we were shorter. Yes, I guess our platforms/heels were not high enough. We were also not that endowed, if you get my drift.
We got a few looks that said, what are they doing here? Or, aren’t they my mother’s age? We got a kick out of the whole experience. So, we decided to take Rosarito and Kiki and again the 4 of us were the oldest people there. We did not care; it was fun to check the scene.
Loud music, and crowded. Dancing at a frenzy. Kiki mentioned that it was like Ibiza, Spain.
For such a small Village by the Sea, the entertainment is pretty good. And, we only went to a couple of places.

Have a great week…talk to you later…relax
August 23rd, 2010

It’s so funny, I just don’t think about it, but, when I want to go to Bethany Beach I just get in my car; I live in Rehoboth, and in no time I am in Bethany.

Many years ago it was such a trip. I thought about it on Saturday, as I was checking out Bethany. On Friday I had tried to find parking, to no avail. So, I went back on Saturday and as I was looking for that elusive parking space I noticed the Historical Marker placed on the corner of Pennsylvania and 1st Street.

There is a bench and a small deck for viewing the area called the Loop Canal.

The Loop Canal was completed on 7/8/1910. This was its centennial anniversary. It marked the end of a long journey for vacationers traveling to Bethany Beach in the early days. Arriving in Rehoboth by railroad, travelers would continue their voyage by boat, crossing Rehoboth and Indian River Bays to the Assawoman Canal.

The last part of the trip? A 2 horse drawn “bus” through the deep sand to Bethany. To make it better, a shallow waterway was dredged from the Assawoman to this location on Pennsylvania and 1st Street.

With the opening of the Canal, travelers could complete the final leg of their journey by boarding a single boat in Rehoboth. The shallow-draft motorboat was called the Allie May and could not back up, so a loop was formed at the 1st Street dock to allow the boat to turn around for its return trip.

I did find that parking spot, more than a few streets north of Garfield Parkway, which is the “Main Street” in Bethany. This town is looking so pretty. I tend to call it the beautification of Bethany Beach. There are flowers all over the place. And, not just stuck in the ground; the mulch, the combination of colors are beautiful. Who is this person that is doing such beautiful work? I called the town office because I want to thank her for a job well done. I found out that her name is Melinda. So, thanks, it really does look pretty.

I took a walk along the Bethany Beach Boardwalk where a lot of the entertainment takes place every week. It is a meeting place; enjoying the fries, ice cream or just a simple walk. It was so hot and the beach was crowded.

It brings back memories because this town was my children’s playground for so many years.
Garfield Parkway (Bethany Beach's Main Street)
