When I, actually thought that the Beaches were slowing down, taking that well deserved rest, then, all these events start popping up. You really can do as little or as much at this time of the year.
There are a few events that will take place at venues which are a few miles inland, but believe, it is not far at all.

The First Grader is an uplifting biographical drama that takes place in a small, remote primary school in the Kenyan bush, where hundreds of children are jostling for a chance for the free education newly promised by the Kenyan government. Maruge an old Mau Mau veteran in his eighties struggles to gain admission so that he can learn to read at this late stage in his life.

Friday, 1/27 – MIXX Restaurant, 26 Baltimore Ave. in Rehoboth Beach is donating 20% of the total sales for the evening to benefit Safe Haven Sanctuary. The Rehoboth Art League is offering plenty of classes at this time of the year. Maybe something you might have wanted to learn….pottery?, glass bead making? Visit the website for the schedule and class price, but these are a few of the classes that are about to start.
Glass Bead Making will be on Wednesday starting 2/8 from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
On Tuesdays, starting 2/28 through 4/3 from 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. Pottery Basics. Hand building and wheel work.
On Wednesday, starting 2/29 until 2/4 from 9:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. another chance to learn Pottery Basics. You can also attend the evening session from 6:00 until 8:30 p.m.
Friday, 1/27 – Fundraising Event at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center located on Rehoboth Avenue. This event will benefit the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation (CHEF). It is a Winter Jam with 2 party bands, The Funsters and The Bullbuckers; both Delaware bands.

The Rehoboth Museum is located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue near the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center and Grove Park. I like to mention this museum because if you love Rehoboth Beach, it can show what it was then and what has become; a year-round destination.
The Exhibit Skimming the Surface; Surf, Skimming, and Floating off the Delaware Coast is one that should be seen for all those aficionados of water sports. It will be there until the first week in March. Saturday, 1/28 – 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. Lewes – Cape Henlopen’s Battle of the Bands at the Cape Henlopen High School Theatre. $10 (come and go). Saturday 1/28 at 2 p.m. – Lewes – Coastal Concerts presents Clancy Newman, Cello and Noreen Cassidy-Polera, Piano Bethel United Methodis Church Hall on 4th & Market Streets in Lewes, Delaware.
Coastal Concerts promotes classical music appreciation in Southern Delaware and surrounding areas.
Clancy Newman has ferocious technical ability, impeccable tonal mastery, and passionate commitment. Noreen Cassidy-Polera is a highly regarded Julliard-trained pianist who has colaborated with Yo-Yo Ma among others.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, 1/13-1/15 – The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is presenting at the Bellmoor Inn, located at 6 Christian St., a 3-part analytical film series that explores aspects of the human experience. Each film includes a post-screening discussion.
The first film to be screened on Friday will be the Visitor at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the next film will be As it is in Heaven at 2 p.m. and on Sunday, The Fisher King will finish the series at 2 p.m.
Admission will be $13 for RBFS members and $15 for the general public. Complimentary snacks and a cash bar will be available prior to each screening.
Friday, 1/13 – Jakes Seafood located at 19178 Coastal Highway (Rt.1) will have entertainer, Dave Sherman, from 6 – 9 p.m., performing vocals and acoustic guitar; playing favorites from the 60s, 70s, 80s and a little country, as well.

Tonight, Friday, The Larry Tucker Band will be playing old and new school R & B with a strong Motown influence. They are also considered a big time party/dance band. This is their first appearance at Bethany Blues.

In Rehoboth to celebrate the New Year? You are in for a real treat because the weather is gorgeous and we hope it stays that way. Hello Downtown Rehoboth Beach!!
Baltimore Avenue is a trendy street in Downtown Rehoboth Beach with very unique restaurants. It is parallel to Rehoboth Avenue. Lots of shops, quaint old houses and the ocean at the end of the street.
If you want entertainment then Showstoppers!! at Clear Space Theatre would be a special way of ringing in the New Year. A group of talented vocalists will take the stage at 9 p.m. to offer you a brand new selection of big Broadway musical numbers like Bosom Buddies from Mame, Easy Street from Annie and Glitter and Be Gay from Candide, among many others.
It is an hour long performance, then a live swing band for the remainder of the evening so you can swing-in the New Year. Dancing will continue until 1 a.m. with hors d’oeuvres and dessert throughout the evening, including a champagne toast at midnight.
Venue? Clear Space Theatre, 20 Baltimore Ave. Tickets are $50 each and includes the performance, live music, hors d’oeuvres, dessert and champagne toast. A cash bar will also be available. Then, you can select from the 4-course New Year’s evening menu with a fabulous show by Pamala Stanley in their warm and cozy Atrium. That will begin at 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. for $135 per person.
New Year’s Day at the Blue Moon will bring a brunch from 10:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m….Their homemade Bloody Marys or Mimosas….Reservations are suggested.
Their Season Closing Party begins at 9 p.m. with drink specials, hors d’oeuvres and entertainment.

Why is it that the day you are leaving a vacation is probably the nicest day of all? That’s what happened yesterday in Delray Beach. 80 degrees, people on the beach, but not us. We were on our way to PBI (Palm Beach International) to hop on Southwest and off to Delaware. It is a conspiracy; they want you to go back. Almost like saying; hey, look what you will be missing. Not so fast. I enjoyed my time in Delray; walked a lot, definitely warmer than home, and ate too much. Yikes! Back on the diet. It is good to be home.
Lately, I have been using 2 airlines; Southwest and Airtran. On Airtran I thought I had a deal. Oh, upgrade to business class for $89. How nice of them!! I figured, let’s splurge! By the time I finished splurging, it was $89 plus $75 for changing and $25 for the luggage and then the $6 per seat paid before the upgrading; that was unrefundable. Plus, my original fare of $69. There were 2 of us.
Southwest was on a roll yesterday. We found the perfect seats. Let’s look like we are sick, then nobody would, in their right mind, sit next to us. Do not look at them in the eyes, either. You know what? It worked because we had the 3 seats all to ourselves. Then Country started. That’s how I called the flight attendant that decided to start singing country music and then proceeded to do a stand-up comedy. I don’t know what it’s happening with Southwest. Do they actually think we all like that? I remember the Captain saying sit back and relax. I wanted to get into my book, but all through the flight he was showering us with a song here or a joke there.
I usually don’t order desserts; just once in a while. But, on our last day, my husband wanted a flan. I always think that it is better to order a flan in a Latin restaurant. They usually have the original; just made with milk, eggs and sugar. I don’t want coconut, sweet potato, mango or any other additives. That’s exactly what we got at Cabana on Atlantic Ave., in Delray. It was pretty good and not overly sweet, either.
It was close to 7 p.m. when we made it to Rehoboth Beach and we were hungry. Three of us went to MIXX on 26 Baltimore Ave., I have written about this restaurant before. Their website is www.mixxrehoboth.com. It was Wednesday; burger night. We had a few other things, as well.
The Ancho Barbecue Chicken Satay – spicy barbecue basted and broiled chicken, served with Korean napa cabbage slaw. It was gluten free and the slaw was spicy. My husband loved it.
He also had a Seared Scallops – served with shredded brussels sprouts, bacon, and a Dijon mustard aioli. Also gluten free. Both of his dishes were appetizers.
Michael had the Black & Blue Bison Burger, which was cracked pepper seasoned bison, topped with blue cheese crumbles, lettuce and tomato. His choice for a side was truffle fries.
Mine was the Asian Pork Burger which was freshly ground pork, roasted garlic & chili sauce, topped with Asian Slaw. My side was sweet potato fries. Tasty and just the right amount.
Yes, we certainly made it back home. It is warm, well in the 60s. Tomorrow, the beginning of a long week-end, 70s is the forecast. Presidents week-end and the shoppers will be here to grab anything the outlets will be offering.
There is a slight spring scent in the air. I can’t fool myself; afterall, it is still February…..

I have to tell you that back on June 3, 2010, I wrote a post about MIXX. When I first visited this restaurant I was pleasantly surprised by the decor, the service, the ambiance, and of course, most importantly, the food.
I went over what I had written on that post, and I must admit I would not change a thing on it. What a coincidence; again I was visiting MIXX on a Wednesday; gourmet burger night. Friends were joining us for dinner, as well. Their first time at MIXX.
Cindi and Ross are good friends from Ocean City and it has been some time since we had seen each other. The moment we sat down Ross was so happy. MIXX is casual, eclectic, intimate, a little hip, and just the right size. His type of restaurant.
MIXX is located at 26 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. The tel. is 302-226-8700. The website? www.mixxrehoboth.com. It is recommended you make reservations, but we did not have any. We were seated immediately; right after, it started filling up.
Cindi and Ross could not believe how comfortably crowded the town of Rehoboth was on a Wednesday night in January. Even though there are restaurants that are closed, Rehoboth Beach has a vibrant community that supports the restaurants that do stay open. These restaurants, in turn, offer great specials, practically every day of the week.
On Wednesdays you will find $8 Gourmet Burgers and Half-priced martinis at MIXX. So we started reading the menu; I knew what I wanted, though.
Yes, I wanted one of the burgers. They had 8 choices. Besides burgers MIXX offered appetizers, flatbreads, soups, salads and entrees like Deviled Short Ribs, Macadamian Crusted Rockfish, MIXX Crab Cakes and Mahi Mahi, which was topped with a papaya mango relish, served with dirty rice and grilled asparagus.
I have to make a comment regarding food allergies and they way MIXX deals with such a sensitive subject. Their menu has (gf) after all items that are gluten free; they have plenty of choices. If you are vegetarian/vegan, then they suggest you call ahead and their chef will prepare a special entree. It is so refreshing that the restaurants in our beaches are addressing these needs.
We started with the Margarita Flatbread which was simple and tasty with fresh tomato, basil, spicy marinara, topped with fresh mozzarella.
We also ordered the Hot and Spicy Edamame, which were tossed with hot and spicy sesame oil. That dish was gluten free.
Two salads were ordered, as well. Both were gluten free. A Wedge Salad which was an Iceburg lettuce wedge with peppered bacon, hard boiled egg, roasted corn, bleu cheese crumbles, siracha ranch dressing.
An Autumn Salad with wild grain rice, wine soaked raisins, dried fruit and cashews, served over mixed g reens with a maple mustard vinaigrette. That salad was ordered as a tapas size.
Most of the menu items can be ordered as full or tapas (smaller) portions.
I ordered the Apple Pork Burger, which had grated apples, ground pork, rubbed sage, topped with caramelized onions, served with maple creme fraiche. The combinations of all those flavors were good; sweetness well received. I chose truffle fries for my side dish.
Cindi had the Black & Blue Bison Burger, with cracked pepper seasoned ground bison, topped with blue cheese crumbles, lettuce and tomato. She also chose the truffle fries for her side dish. She thought it was delicious and even took some home.
Ross decided on the Angus Beef Burger, topped with bacon, roasted red peppers and pepper jack cheese, side of chipolte mayo, which he declined. It hit the spot. His side dish was the sweet potato fries.
Truffle fries vs. sweet potato fries? For me, it is a toss up.
My husband decided on 2 appetizers for his dinner and they looked beautiful.
The Crab & Feta Stuffed Portobello – It was a marinated portobello, lump crab and feta cheese topped with provolone, roasted red peppers and finished with a balsamic drizzle. Gluten free, of course, and he loved it.
He thought the Seared Scallops were perfectly cooked and seasoned. They were served with shredded brussels sprouts, bacon, and a Dijon mustard aioli. Again, gluten free.
And, what can I say about the service? Courtney was attentive, making sure all our needs were taken care of. Pete came to talk to us, as well.
MIXX opens from Wednesday through Sunday at 5:30 p.m. Sunday Brunch from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. On Thursdays they will offer half priced wine (glass or bottle), and Free (tapas) Appetizer, Soup or MIXX Salad. Sundays is buy one entree, get one free.
So many choices, so many restaurants to try…a lot of possibilities….One thing for sure is the fact that sharing a meal with friends…is and will always be, priceless!!

Rehoboth Beach is one of those coastal towns located in Delaware that is known for its good restaurants. Even though I have lived here for many years, there are still some that I have not visited.
A year ago I started my blog and during this past year I have reviewed some of the downtown restaurants. Once I have reviewed a restaurant or business I send them an e-mail. My reviews are, of course, my personal opinion. I think the restaurants appreciate comments; how the customer has been treated from the moment he or she steps into their establishment.
With that said, I am now getting e-mails with the fall offerings and specials. The following list, is by no means complete. I am getting there and I will keep passing on the information as I get it or find it.
The Back Porch Cafe – 59 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach, 302-227-3674, www.backporchcafe.com. The restaurant will be open in October for long week-ends. They will be serving their fixed price menu on Thursdays. Regular dinner menu will be available Friday through Sunday. The Back Porch is open for lunch on Fridays and Saturdays and for Sunday Brunch.
They will close for the season on Sunday, October 31st.

Big Fish Grill – Even though this restaurant is not in downtown Rehoboth I decided to include it since its sister restaurant, the Summer House, is.

Happy Hour – Only at the Bar. Mondays through Thursdays 5 – 7 p.m., Fridays 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. and Sundays 4 – 6 p.m. 1/2 priced appetizers.
On October 31st – Kids under 12 eat free if they are wearing a costume from 4 – 8 p.m. A picture will be taken and the best costume will be picked, as well.
Big Fish Grill has started cooking classes. I attended one this year and it was excellent. Next one will be 10/23 and then 11/6, 11/10, 11/20, 12/4 and 12/8. Please check the above mentioned website for information and the 2011 class schedule.

On Sunday, 10/31 kids under 12 will eat free if they are wearing a costume from 4 – 8 p.m. A picture will be taken and the best costume will be picked.

This restaurant has a sister restaurant in Lewes. It opened this season on trendy Baltimore Ave., one block from the boardwalk.
Mondays – 1/2 price bottles of wine
Tuesdays – Prix-Fixe (3 course menu for $23), plus 1/2 bottles of wine (any wine under $60 on their list)
Wednesdays – Tapas Happy Hour ($7 tapas and $7 glasses of wine off their wine board)
Thursdays – Steak & Wine Nite – 3 great steaks with 3 different preparations. Choose your steak and then choose your preparation for the one price. Steak dinner is served with a green salad, Jason’s bread and olives $17.
Select red wines will be on special by the glass or bottle. Add on for steak dinners $9, either a crab cake, shrimp plancha or seared scallops.
Tapas Happy Hour Sundays – Thursdays from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Bar and Dining Room with $7 Tapas Menu and discounted Drink Specials.

The festival is this coming week-end and Cafe Sole is excited to announce that 2 great groups have been booked for their restaurant.
Friday, October 15th – Clap, sing, and tap your feet to the authentic New Orleands sound of “The Cornbread Five”. This is a group of dedicated musicians (and music teachers) who are passionate about honoring the traditions of music from The Big Easy.
Saturday, October 16th – The mellow jazz styling of The Lauren Lark Quartet. Led by awesome singer/songwriter Lauren Lark, the group will revive your memories of the age of smooth jazz and romantic cheek-to-cheek dancing.
Choose a night (or choose both) and call for a reservation.
Sunday Brunch is from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Happy Hour is from 3 until 7 p.m. every day of the week and all day on Sundays.

Confucius – Chinese Cuisine, located at 57 Wilmington Ave., tel. 302-227-2848, www.confuciusrehobothbeach.com. I frequent this restaurant a lot and love their food and service.
Mondays – All fish entrees are 1/2 price.
Sundays – Peking Duck is $15.95 for 1/2 or $29.95 for whole.

Cultured Pearl – Located on 301 Rehoboth Ave., this restaurant is one of the most popular in Rehoboth Beach. Tel. 302-227-8493, 302-227-4217 for carry out.
Monday Night Sushi at the Pearl is back for a second season with a couple of new twists and turns to it. Once this night caught on, it got very crowded, so reservations are suggested.

Eden – Located at 23 Baltimore Ave., tel. 302-227-3330, www.edenrestaurant.com. This is another very popular restaurant in downtown Rehoboth. I tried it for the first time this summer and had a wonderful meal.

Tuesday, October 12th – Whole Body Health Program by Gretchen Hanson, Hobo’s owner and Chef.
This 30 day program is for people that want to feel better, get healthy and lose weight involving cooking classes, a detox from processed foods and an all around food overhaul. It is free and it is at Hobos. It will last until November 16th. It is a complete overhaul of the way you eat eliminating all processed foods, white flour, hfcs, hydrogenated fats, sugar, etc. It involves her undivided attention and lots of one on one counseling time and 5 free cooking classes in exchange to your committing to follow the plan for 30 days.
Gretchen is writing a book which will be finished next spring so the participants will agree to be a part of it, as well. Most importantly, this is not a diet, it is a lifestyle, which means that there is no weighing, measuring and calorie counting; just real, delicious food….
Thursday, October 14th – Hobos Restaurant & Crush & Press jointly host a tasting dinner of Extra Virgin Olive Oils & Rhone Valley + Wines. It is at 6:30 p.m. at Hobos.
It is $55 per person and you can make reservations on line at info@myhobos.com. The olive oils tasted will be available for purchase the night of the event.
Menu will include:
Heirloom tomatoes preserved with lemon thyme and stuffed with arugula pistou
“Cream” of roasted cauliflower and artichoke soup with garlic rouille
Polenta cakes with nutmeg mushroom duxelles
Salt smoked sea scallops and caramelized shallot and leek risotto timbales
Almond Mandarin olive oil cake

Tuesday, October 12th is the Women & Wine Club Event – Starting at 6:30 p.m. “Pino Envy” – Enjoy a 4 course meal matched to wines chosen by Southern Wine & Spirits. Cost is $39.00.
