Officially opening Summer 2015 – Memorial Week-End….no staycation for many, getting out of town and heading out to the Delaware Beaches. These coastal towns are pretty much year-round resorts. Every season brings surprises to the DE Beaches. The best part is that Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, and Fenwick Island….they are all unique. Even though they are all by the water’s edge, their make up is different.

Saturday, 5/23 – KALMAR NYCKEL ARRIVES!! It arrives just in time for the first long week-end of Summer 2015!! Location? Cape May-Lewes Ferry Public Pier. This ship is a faithful recreation of the original ship that brought the earliest settlers from Sweden to Delaware.
It will head out daily….twice on Memorial Day, under full sail for a 2 1/2 hour tours of The Harbor of Refuge, off the coast of Lewes and at the mouth of the Delaware Bay estuary where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. Lightship Overfalls is one of only 17 remaining lightships out of 179 built from 1820 to 1952. A National Historic Landmark designation was given to “Big Red” in 2011. It is one of 7 lightships in this country still open to the public. It is also a perfectly restored example of a now extinct fleet of floating lighthouses.
A lightship is a floating lighthouse; aiding navigation at night…it has a horn to warn mariners in fog, and a radio beacon for longer range identification.
The mission of the Overfalls Foundation is to “collect, preserve, honor and teach the maritime history of Lewes, the Delaware Bay, and the coastal region, using the Lightship Overfalls, the American Lightship Museum, as well as Delaware Maritime Hall of Fame”.
Lightship Overfalls is located at Canalfront Park, 219 Pilottown Rd., in Historic Lewes, Delaware. Tel. 302-644-8050. This is a must stop visit while in Lewes. This is going to be the First Annual Summer Evening Sundown BBQ at the Lightship Overfalls. It will take place on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. In case of rain….I think we will be safe this week, the BBQ will take place on Thursday, July 18th. Location? 219 Pilottown Rd. on the Canal, adjacent to Canalfront Park.
It should be a fun evening since the Lightship Overfalls’ deck will be open for dining. You know that on the deck you will get amazing views of the sunset and the surrounding waterfront area.
Visit with friends and meet new ones, as visitors and residents gather for a summer evening in Historic Lewes. There will be a lively steel band, and the meal will be pulled pork BBQ provided by Casa D’Amici.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for children. It will include the pulled pork on fresh baked rolls, pickles, chips, dessert and beverage of your choice…beer, wine, or soft drink.

Okay, I agree…no fun if you are at the beach and it is raining cats and dogs….the kids are driving you insane….and why did we choose this week? Coastal Highway or Rt. 1 is our major “highway” traveling through the Delaware Beaches into Ocean City, Maryland. You could tell the “gates” were opening already. Plenty of cars dragging summer gear. It is, afterall, the official opening of Summer!! Even though all the towns located at the Delaware Beaches enjoy visitors year-round, it is at this time of the year when we look forward to doing everything our coastal towns have to offer.
So, if you are visiting the First Town in the First State…..this historic town has plenty to offer this holiday week-end.
Friday, 5/24 and Saturday, 5/25 – Kalmar Nyckel Day Sail from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. The Kalmar Nyckel is Delaware’s Tall Ship. If you want to know more, please visit http://www.kalmarnyckel.org. Historic Lewes, Delaware is ready to Celebrate the 4th!!
9:00 a.m. – A long tradition still continues in Lewes when the town hosts old-fashioned games for children on Second Street beginning at 9 a.m. Second Street, which is the Main Street in Downtown Lewes, will be closed while the games are in progress. It will re-open once the games conclude.
1:30 p.m. – The Lewes Independence Day Boat Parade, cosponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and the Overfalls Foundation, will wind its way down the Lewes-Rehoboth canal to Fisherman’s Wharf as part of the holiday festivities. The parade entrants will leave from Roosevelt Inlet across from the Coast Guard Station at 1:30 p.m. and reach the judges’ reviewing stand at Fisherman’s Wharf at approx. 2:00 p.m.
All pre-registered boat entrants will be eligible for prizes that include a unique hand-carved figurine by local carver Bert Long. The figurine will be awarded to the most creatively decorated boat. First, Second, and Third Place Ribbons will also be awarded. All boat entrants will receive merchandise prizes from the Overfalls Foundation. Boats will be judged on the best use of patriotic decorations.
3:30 p.m. – Awards Ceremony on the deck of the Lightship Overfalls at 3:30 p.m. To be eligible for the prize, the vessel must be registered prior to 10 a.m. on July 4th. Registrations are available at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center in the Fisher-Martin-House in Zwaanendael Park, at Pilottown Marina on Pilottown Rd, and the Lewes Harbour Marina Bait and Tackle at the end of Anglers Rd. Late, unregistered, entries are invited to join the parade by arriving at the Roosevelt Inlet at 1:30 p.m., tuning a VHF ratio channel 65 and following instructions.

The Infamous Lewes Doo-Dah Parade!
5:00 – 7:0-0 p.m. – Join in or simply watch the fun as the Annual Doo-Dah Parade takes to the streets of Downtown Lewes. Jump if you want to….No registration is necessary. No need to plan ahead, either. Just bring your own fun spirit and kazoo, bicycle, wagon, yo-to- or hula-hoop or anything you have that is family oriented.
Parade Route: Manila Avenue, Kings Highway, Savannah Rd., 2nd Street, Market Street, and 3rd Street.

Just a few days ahead is the “official” opening of the Delaware Beaches. With that comes the enjoyment of our parks and recreations. Cape Henlopen State Park has wonderful activities for the whole family. In order to enter the Park you need to pay an entry fee or you can buy a pass and use it all year.

Wednesday, 5/23 – Chicks for Charity Dinner at Fish-On Restaurant located at the Village of Five Points in Lewes. It will benefit Friends Afterschool at Milton Elementary School “FAME”.
Milton Elementary School in the Cape Henlopen School District is partnered with Children & Families First and the University of Delaware Office of Service Learning to create FAME, a non-profit, innovative unique and holistic approach to addressing the needs of all school children. FAME provides activities to maximize their self-esteem and help them achieve their potential. They also offer summer camps, after school clubs, tutoring homework help, and the Strengthening Families Program.
Chicks for Charity was founded by Kari Ainsworth and Marci Urgo. It is a group dedicated to assisting those less fortunate. It was established in Lewes, Delaware. They have aided the residents of Sussex County since its inception. Many of the charitable organizations they have helped are essential community resource agencies.
Dinner on Wednesday at Fish On will start at 6:30 p.m. Two delicious entrees to choose from along with appetizer and dessert. $25 per person includes gratuity. Cash or checks only payable to Fish-On. Cash Bar available.

Sunday, 5/27 – If you are a history buff, a veteran, or interested in learning about the Delaware Shore and WWII, then this might be just up your alley. Lantern Tour of Fort Miles will be on this coming Sunday from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Tour the gun battery by lantern light and learn how soldiers defended our coast. It is for ages 10 and up with an adult. It is also limited to 30 people. Pre-registration is a must and it is required. $5 per person. Call 302-645-6852 to register and for more info.
Fort Miles is inside Cape Henlopen State Park. Fort Miles was a key piece in the nation’s coastal defense during WWII. In April of 2005 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

New Year’s Eve in Lewes, Delaware, is something not to be missed. Weather permitting a full lighted anchor will be dropped from the mast of Lightship Overfalls, to its deck, with a countdown into the New Year. This is an annual tradition. It is the only National Historic Landmark that does a “ball drop”.
Lightship Overfalls was part of manned lightships or “floating lighthouses” that were started by the U.S. government in 1820. It is one of the 17 remaining and one of only 7 of such vessels in the country that is still open to the public. For more info., please visit http://www.overfalls.org.
These floating lighthouses could be placed in deep waters where it was practically impossible to put fixed structures; they could also be moved easily.
In the mid 20th century new automated lights and radio signals made these vessels a thing of the past.
Lighthship Overfalls was built in 1938 and was one of the last to be built. In 1973 it was given to the Lewes Historical Society.
Then, on 12/7/01 ownership was transferred to the Overfalls Maritime Museum Foundation. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
So, if you are in Lewes, for this last day of 2011, then put on your party hat and get down to the canal, right at Front and Shipcarpenter Streets. Help everyone welcome 2012, toot the horn and drop that anchor.
