Simple pleasures, enjoying the moment, strolling Historic Lewes, Delaware…it is in Bloom! Each DE Beach has its own personality. Lewes Historic District is full of shops, restaurants….also, some of the oldest homes in the state. Afterall, Lewes is the First Town in the First State. Lewes is a gem…a town well treasured by its residents, and long-time visitors, as well.
On Front Street you will find the 1812 Memorial Park. On April 6 through April 8, 1813 Lewes sustained heavy cannon fire from the British ships, and was bombarded by Congreve rockets, the first use of this technology against the Americans.
Not knowing was Congreve rockets were…I was curious. These rockets were developed by Sir William Congreve in 1804. He registered 2 patents, and published 3 books on rocketry. It is a long story, but one interesting tidbit is the fact that: It was the use of ship launched Congreve rockets by the British in the bombardment of Fort McHenry in the U.S. in 1814 that inspired the fifth line of the first verse of the United States’ National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner”: “and the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air”.

I remember posting a few weeks ago that the tulips in Historic Lewes had a mind of their own….well, with the Tulip Festival over, the tulips are now in bloom. You can enjoy them throughout Lewes.

Saturday, May 2nd – 20th Annual British Motorcar Show from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Once again, Lewes welcomes this very well attended event, when a wide array of classic British vehicles make their appearance at Lewes Historical Society Complex located at Third and Shipcarpenter Streets. The Lewes Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring this event along with The British Car Club of Delaware. General admission ($3, free for children 12 and under) includes ballots on which to vote for the best cars.

The timing of the tulip’s appearance is an inexact science and to that end, the committees in charge of the annual Tulip Festival in Lewes, Delaware, decided to expand the time frame of the event to enhance the chances that the tulips will be visible during the event. The event dates span two week-ends, April 9th to April 18th, with special events planned on the first week-end.
Having said that and having visited Lewes, yesterday, Thursday….it might be better to come to see the tulips next week. It is what it is, mother nature does it again. But, if you like to have fun at the beach, by no means come on down.
This is the 6th Annual Tulip Festival. The Lewes Chamber of Commerce continues to partnership with Lewes in Bloom, The Lewes Historical Society, Lewes Parks & Recreation, the Zwaanendael Museum and the Historic Lewes Farmers Market to present this annual celebration.

Online ticket purchases can only be made until 4 p.m. on Friday, December 5th. After that time, tickets will only be available at The Ryves Holt House and Lewes Chamber of Commerce Office. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6TH – 83rd ANNUAL LEWES CHRISTMAS PARADE – This year’s theme is Santa’s Workshop. The parade will be Saturday but in the event of rain, it will be Sunday at the same time. It will start at 5 p.m., with a line-up beginning at 3:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. The parade will begin on Savannah Rd. at Sussex Drive and will end in front of King’s Ice Cream Shop on Second St. The Chamber Board of Directors will be leading the parade, carrying a huge helium balloon. After the parade, stand by because the Christmas tree in Zwaanendael Park will be illuminated followed by candlelight caroling in the park. NOTE: DUE TO THE FORECAST, THE PARADE HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR BOTH DAYS. SO SORRY!
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7TH – DELAWARE DAY – Merchants in Lewes celebrate the day in 1787 when the First State ratified the Constitution. 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Front Street, the merchants will have available Delaware items, as well as refreshments. Lewes began as a colony in the spring of 1631. It is the First Town in the First State. This historic town gets better as it gets older….don’t we all wish that? With a little help of its residents, Lewes is just gorgeous year-round.
I don’t have to have a purpose to visit Lewes, it is just a few miles north of Rehoboth Beach, where I live. It has been so nice to see that after the unusually cold winter we have had, Lewes is still in bloom today.
Lewes is a very walkable town. You really cannot get lost. Anyway, if you do, just ask anyone. The residents are proud and love to show off Historic Lewes.
The Zwaanendael Museum should be a must on your strolling Lewes. It is located at 102 Kings Highway. It was built in 1931 to commemorate the 300th anniversay of the first European settlement in Delaware. Throughout the year this museum is open to the public and holds events that are of interest to the community. For more info., please call 302-645-1148. Right next to Chamber is the new Zwaanendael Park Garden and Colonial Herbary. The day I was walking, one of the Lewes in Bloom volunteers was tending the garden. She was so excited…the catnip was coming up, after the tough winter.

Strolling Lewes will let you admire and enjoy the beautiful architecture of this historic town. For example, right on 217 Second Street you will find the home of John Penrose Virden. There will be agility and obedience demons, photo ops, doggie massage and acupuncture. A light lunch will be available. Event is limited to the first 350 dogs. Lewes enjoys a heritage that is rich in both its maritime history and its current maritime interests.
Sunday, June 1 – PICNIC IN THE PARK – Canalfront Park on Second Street – Join friends, neighbors, and fantastic local restaurants for the Park’s popular and most delicious event. Adult entrance is $10. Tickets for 12 and under are $5. Food and drink tickets are sold separately at the event and are $2 each depending on the food/drink option. A dozen downtown-area Lewes restaurants are participating and making their specialties. Limited space, only 1,000 tickets available. It was sold out last year.

Destination? Lewes, Delaware!! This seaside, quaint and historic town was the first first settled by the Dutch in 1631. Named Swanendael which also means Valley of the Swans. It is located right at Cape Henlopen, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Delaware Bay.
Lewes is a year round resort with many events, activities, and entertainment being offered practically every week-end. The town is very walkable with plenty of restaurants and shops, art galleries and museums.
The Visitor Center and Lewes Chamber of Commerce are located at 120 Kings Highway, in the historic Fisher-Martin House next to the Zwaanendael Museum.

Saturday, 10/5, Sunday, 10/6 – “TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME” – Mid-Atlantic VBBL Championship Tournament. The Lewes Historical Society is the home of the Lewes Vintage Base Ball Club. This is a vintage ball club that participates in the Mid Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League and a member of the Vintage Base Ball Association. They play the games at the University of Delaware Lewes Campus near the Virden Conference Center at 700 Pilottown Rd. The earlies known reference as of today, of baseball in Lewes, is from February 1874 when a match between Lewes and Milton was advertised for March 1, 1874.
Rules are a bit different: The ability to catch the ball on one bounce for an out and no gloves are permitted for fielders. Pitchers throw underhand; batters are called strikers; foul balls can be caught on the bounce for an out.
The tournament on Saturday and Sunday starts at Noon. It looks like the weather will be perfect for a day at the park!!
Saturday, 10/5 – LEWES HISTORICAL SOCIETY OCTOBER CRAFT FAIR – 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Historical Complex located at Second & Shipcarpenter Streets, one block from downtown Historic Lewes. This is a very popular fair, bringing many visitors to Lewes. There will be many fine crafstmen from Delaware and the Eastern Shore, exhibiting crafts in the media ranging from pottery to woodworking. Listen to live music, walk through the historical sites and enjoy a beautiful Second Season in Lewes.

Saturday, 10/5 – LEWES’ 18TH ANNUAL BOAST THE COAST MARITIME FESTIVAL – 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Maritime-themed activities throughout the day and into the evening. The Boast the Coast activities in 1812 Park and at the City Duck will begin at 11 a.m. The Lighted Boat Parade culminates the day’s activities at dusk on the canal. Sunday, 10/6 – RUN 4 THE HOUSE 5K – 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. – Join Irish Eyes and help support families with seriously ill or injured children staying at the Ronal McDonal House of Delaware. This is the 2nd annual 5K Run/Walk on Sundahy. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the race starting at 9 a.m. Irish Eyes will be hosting a post party with free drinks and food.
Registration on the day of the race is $25. Student entry is $20. Ronald McDonald will be on hand for free 1k Children’s Run for children 10 and under. It is a beautiful day at the Delaware Beaches….a little bit of rain last night probably was more than welcomed by the Children’s Learning Garden, located in Stango Park near the Lewes Public Library on Kings Highway, as you enter Lewes, Delaware. In this learning garden families can see how local fruits and veggies grow.
I stopped to see it because even from the road it attracts attention. This garden was established in April 2013 by Lewes in Bloom. This organization started in 2002, just like everything else starts in communities throughout the United States with a small group of volunteers. Lewes in Bloom promotes the beautification and maintenance of Historic Lewes, and the community. It has won America in Bloom awards in 2003, 2005, and 2010, for cities with populations under 5,000. Families are invited to participate at the Children’s Learning Garden. Plenty of activities each week, free of charge, are on the schedule, all by Lewes in Bloom volunteers and members from the community.
Mondays – 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. – Story Hour with Miss Maureen from the Lewes Library! Litsten to her favorite books and complete a simple craft. Bring a blanket and picnic lunch to enjoy afterwards.
Thursdays in the Garden – Augst 1st brings Kids’ Zumba, August 8th is Kids’ Yoga, August 15th is Music with Miss Debbie, and August 22nd is Cooking with Miss Katie! What’s Growing in the Garden!

Saturday, 2/23 – Improv is a form of theatre in which actors use improvisational acting techniques to perform spontaneously. Is in the moment; no scripts, no memorized dialogue and no rehearsal. Delaware Comedy Theatre is the longest improve theatre company in Delaware. First show for 2013 at Fish On!, located in the Villages of Five Points, at 17300 N Village Main, Lewes, will be Saturday, February 23rd. “Cupid Shoots Self In Foot VI: Bad Romance Edition” will be presented by this Rehoboth Beach based non-profit improvisational theatre group and school. Where the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet at Cape Henlopen, that’s where you will find the charming coastal town of Lewes. It is no ordinary town; it is the First town in the First State.
If you are visiting the Delaware Beaches you will be surprised to see so many events and activities. To tell you the truth, this has been such an unusual year. The weather, the towns, the residents and all of you visitors have made the Second Season a lot of fun. It went by so quickly.
Let’s get on with what’s going on in Lewes, Delaware.
Thursday, 4/12 through Sunday, 4/15 – 3rd Annual Lewes Tulip Festival. Lewes in Bloom and other volunteers have planted more than 10,000 bulbs in the City’s parks and public places in the past 3 years.
Originally, the colors selected were red and white and blue, colors of both, the Dutch and American flags.
The Lewes Historical Society is hosting a new event this year, associated with the Preservations Awared. It is called Restoration Destination; a Restoration and Home Builder’s Expo to be held at the Lewes Presbyterian Church, located at 133 Kings Highway, on Friday and Saturday. On The Rocks Bar & Grill – Open Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On the Boardwalk at the Lewes Ferry Terminal you will find On The Rocks Bar & Grill. Right where the Cape May-Lewes Ferry is also located, 43 Cape Henlopen Drive. The views are unparalleled.

Friday, 4/13 and Saturday 4/14 – Sydney’s Music Revival at Bethany Blues Lewes, located at 18385 Coastal Highway (Rt. 1). Website? http://www.bethanyblues.com. The entertainment will start at 8 p.m.

Saturday, 4/14 – Flea Market at the Seaside Nature Center from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Flea Market is hosted by The Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park. The Seaside Nature Center is inside the Park located at 15099 Cape Henlopen Dr. For purposes of GPS you might need to put in the old address, 42 Cape Henlopen Drive, Lewes, DE 19958.
Clean items may be donated by dropping them off on Friday, 4/13, at the Nature Center Auditorium from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. If it rains, the flea market will be held in the Auditorium. More info? Please visit www.friendsofcapehenlopen.org.
At the Zwaanendael Museum, located at 3rd St. and Savannah Rd., you will find on Saturday, 4/14:
The Zwaanendael Women’s Club sponsors “Get Ready for Earth Day”. There will be Conservation Exhibits and information throughout the whole day.
The Museum will also be presenting on Saturday “Savory Sussex” from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Charlie Smith, 4th generation farmer and co-owner of T.S. Smith & Sons farm in Bridgeville, DE will be the speaker at the final installment of “Savory Sussex”. This is a Free event. Call to reserve a seat since there is limited space. Tel. 302-645-1148.
Charlie Smith will talk about his farm’s 105 year history, its sustainable approach to agriculture and the public’s opportunity to visit and tour the farm. Samples of cream of asparagus soup made by Charlie’s sister, Susan, will be shared along with the family recipe.
